Refining an interestAshley Aller explained that herinternship allowed her to find herfocus within the diverse field ofpathology. In particular, it was theresearch that hooked her.
“It’s important to get that researchexperience and as a result of thisinternship, I am developing an
interest in the eye,” said Aller whose research is titled “Bilateral andInvasive Massive Gliosis of the Retina with Features of Ependymoma.”
Working one-on-one with Beaumont physiciansThe students particularly emphasized how grateful they were for thephysician mentorship. The interaction far exceeded their expectations.
Rachel Nash was encouraged topursue all angles of her internship, which familiarized her with social andlegal issues impacting the vulnerablefamilies seeking support from theBeaumont Legal Aid for Children andFamilies (LACF). The computer-screening tool that Nash developedwith her mentors during hercommunity-based internship will beused to collect specific information from the patients to make themaware of their legal rights.
In addition to working at LACF, Nash was thrilled to split some of hertime in the pediatrics clinic.
“After a long year of working hard, being so involved at the hospitalreminded me why I am studying to be a physician,” said Nash whoseresearch is titled “Screening for Health-Harming Legal Needs in theAmbulatory Pediatric Clinic.”
Tom LaRouere explained that hereceived a well-rounded view ofpediatrics as his physician mentorsensured that he spent time on thepediatrics floor, its intensive care unit (ICU) and the clinic. He described hispediatrics ICU exposure as life changing.
