ExaminationsoftheInsuranceInstituteofUganda(IIU)shallbeconductedinaccordancewiththeregulationsassetoutinthefollowingguidelinesandproceduresthathavebeenapprovedbytheIIUGoverningCouncil.
The Students’ Examination Guidelines in this booklet focuses on thegeneral principles of goodpractice, aswell as outlining theproceduresthatshouldbeadoptedtoensureefficientandeffectiveexamininginthecontextofIIU.Thequalitycontrolmeasuresthatshallbeinplacetoensurethattherequiredacademicstandardsaremaintainedandareclearlyspeltoutintheseguidelines.

1.0 REGISTRATION FOR EXAMINATIONS
1.1 Entry Requirements
1.1.1 CertificateofProficiency/CertificateinInsurance
Tobeadmittedtothisprogramme,anapplicantmusthaveobtainedatleast;
i. TheUgandaCertificateofEducation(UCE)withaminimumofthree passesOR
ii. Anequivalentqualificationfromanaccreditedinstitution.
1.1.2 Diploma in Insurance
Tobeadmittedtothisprogramme,anapplicantmusthaveobtainedatleast; i. TheUgandaAdvancedCertificateofEducation(UACE)with atleastoneprinciplepassinapprovedsubjectsOR
ii. ACertificateinInsurancefromanaccreditedprofessional insuranceinstituteOR
iii. Anyotherequivalentqualificationthatwillbeassessedby IIU foradmission.
1.2 Application process
i. Applicationsmustbedoneontheappropriateformsissuedbythe Instituteaccompaniedwithproofofpaymentoftheprescribedfees andcopiesofacademicdocuments.
ii. ApplicationsshouldbereceivedattheInstituteatleast1(one)month beforethestartofamoduletoallowforvettingoftherequired documents.
iii. Allapplicantswillbevettedbeforeadmission.

iv. Registrationforstudyandexaminationsofanadmittedstudentis onlyconfirmedafteranon-refundabletuitionfeedepositismadeto theInstitute’sbankaccount.
1.3 Fees Policy
1.3.1 Fees payments per module
i. Everystudentwillberequiredtopaythefeesapplicableforacourse ineachmodule,whichincludes;tuition,application,registration, examination,NCHE,membershipandGraduationfees.
ii. AllfeesduetotheInstitutemustbedepositedintotheInstitute’sbank accountasprovidedbytheInstitute.
iii. TheNCHEfeesarepayabledirectlyintotheNCHEbankaccount andproofofthispaymentsubmittedtotheInstitute’saccountsoffice fornoting.
1.3.2 Deferment of studies
i. Astudentwhoforonereasonoranothermaychoosetodefertheir examinationsafteradmissionandpaymentoffeestotheInstitute’s bankaccountmaydosowithintwo(2)weeksfromthestartofclass. ThestudentwillberequiredtoofficiallyapplytotheHeadof Examinationsofthisdecisionandthedefermentwillbegrantedatthe discretionoftheExaminationsdepartment.
ii. Thestudentwillbechargedonaproratadailybasiswithinthetwo weeks.Astudentcanhavehis/herfeesdeferredonlyonce.
iii. AstudentwhodoesnotofficiallyapplytotheHeadofExaminations abouttheirdeferralandhasdepositedmoniesintotheInstitute’s accountwillnotberefundedthefeesthatwerepaid.Thestudentwill forfeitthispaymentandwillberequiredtomakefreshpaymentsfor anycourseregisteredforatafuturesitting.

1.4 Discontinuation from the programme
i. Astudentshallbeexpectedtocompletetheprogramme he/shehasbeenadmittedtowithintheprescribed periodasindicatedbelow; (a) DiplomainInsurance .................................................... 6years (b) CertificateinInsurance .................................................... 4years (c) Certificateofproficiency ................................................. 3years

2.0 CREDIT TRANSFER
2.1 Procedure for requesting for transfer of credits
i. TheInstituteallowsforpersonswhowishtobeadmittedtoa programmetoapplyfortransferofcompletedcourseworkorcredits fromaprogrammeawardedbytheinstitute,oranyotherinstitution recognizedbytherelevantacademicaccreditingauthorities.
ii. Transferofcreditscanbedonefornotmorethan40%ofthetotalcredit unitsrequiredforonetocompletetheprogrammeinwhichadmission issought.
iii. TheapplicantseekingtransferofcreditsshallapplytotheExaminations Departmentinadvanceinordertodeterminewhichcreditsmayor maynottransfer.TheapplicantshallthereaftersubmittheTransferof CreditEvaluationFormalongsidehis/herapplicationformforstudy.
Toassesstheeligibilityforthetransferofcredits,theapplicantmust alsosubmittheofficialtranscript(s)oftheawardfromwhichthecredits arebeingsoughtfortransferandadetailedsyllabusorcurriculumof theprogrammeinwhichtheawardwasattained.

iv. Awardsolderthan10yearsshallnotbeacceptedforevaluationforthe transferofcredits.
v. Onlycoursesthathavebeenpassedareeligiblefor transfer.
vi. Credittransfersshallbeappliedforatleast3weeksbeforethestartof themoduletoallowenoughtimefortheapplicationtobeconsidered bytheAdmissionsCommittee.
Transfer of credits will be granted at thediscretionof theAdmissionsCommittee.
3.0 EXEMPTIONS
3.1 Procedure for requesting for exemptions
i. Exemptionsshallbeawardedtoanapplicantthatisdeemedtohave coveredthesyllabuscontentofthecourseunitinwhichhe/sheis seekingexemption. Thecourseunitmusthavebeenawardedbythe institute,oranyotherinstitutionaccreditedbytherelevantacademic accreditingauthoritiesmandatedbytherespectivegovernment.
ii. TheapplicantshallberequiredtofillanExemptionsFormandreturn ittotheHeadofExaminationsoftheInstitutewithcopiesofthe academicdocumentsattached.Originaltranscriptswillalsobe requestedbeforeexemptionisgrantedandadetailedcourseoutline ofthecoursethatwasstudied.Applicationforexemptionisfreeof charge,howevertheapplicantshallpaytheequivalentprevailingfees foracourseunitforwhichexemptionisawarded.
iii. Exemptionscanbegrantedfornotmorethan40%ofthetotalcredit unitsrequiredforonetocompletetheprogrammeinwhichadmission issought.
iv. Exemptionsshallbeappliedforatleast3weeksbeforethestartof themoduletoallowenoughtimefortheapplicationtobeconsidered bytheAdmissionsCommittee.

iv. Exemptionsthathavebeenawardedwillonlybeaddedtoastudent’s recordafteranyfeesduearepaid.Theapplicantshallbegiven aperiodofonemonthfromthetimeofnotificationtopayfortheir exemptionorelsetheyrisklosingtheexemption.
3.2 Exemption Criteria
(a) For one to qualify for an Exemption;
i. Thecourseunitmusthavebeenawardedbyanaccreditedinstitution thatisrecognizedbytherelevantacademicaccreditingauthorities nationallyandinternationally.
ii. Theremustbean80%matchbetweenthequalificationsyllabus,the learningoutcomes,assessmentmethodsandcredithourscovered forthatcourseunitinwhichexemptionisbeingsought.
iii. Theapplicantmusthavepassedthecourseunit(s)thathe/sheis seekingexemptiononthenewprogramme.
(b) For an IIU graduate to qualify for an Exemption;
i. TheapplicantmusthavesuccessfullycompletedanIIUqualification.
ii. Exemptionwillbegrantedfor5creditunitsinthecomplementary categoryoftheDiplomainInsuranceprogrammeforthosethatapply withanIIUCertificateinInsuranceand10creditunitsintheAdvanced InsurancecoursescategoryoftheAdvancedDiplomainInsurance programmeforthosethatapplywithanIIUDiplomainInsurance.
4.0 EXAMINATION PROCESS
4.1 Mode of assessment
The Institute shall conduct the following examinations:
a. Continuousassessmentb. Summativeassessment

4.1.1 Continuous assessment
i. ContinuousAssessmentwillbeinformofcourseworktests,projects orassignments.Allcontinuousassessmentshallbeconductedduring thestudytime.Theseshallbeconductedbeforethesummativeassessment isdone.
ii. ContinuousAssessmentshallbedonefortworeasons:
• Asclasstesttobeusedaspartoftheteachingandlearningprocess where,themarkswillnot,andarenotintendedtocontributetothe resultofthecourse.
• Aspartoftheformalfinalassessment,insuchcasethemarks obtainedinthecontinuousassessmentwillcontributetothefinalresult, insuchproportionasindicatedintheapprovedcurriculum.
iii. Astudentwhomissesthecontinuousassessment,thatisgivenand contributestothefinalresultofacourseunit,willbeprovidedonly oneopportunitytositthecontinuousassessmentatthesubsequent sitting.
iv. Astudentwhodoesnotregisterandsitamissedcontinuousassessment atthesubsequentsittingwillhavetheresultsofthesummative assessmentcancelledandhe/shewillberequiredtoregisterafresh forthecourseunit.
v. Astudentwhowillhavemissedthecontinuousassessmentwill automaticallyforfeitanyfeespaymentsmadebythattime.
vi. Continuousassessmentshallbedoneandfeedbackgiventostudents beforethesummativeassessmentisgiven.

4.1.2 Summative assessment
Thesummativeassessmentwillbeasinglefinalexaminationforeachcourseunitandisscheduledduringtheexaminationperiod.TheregulationsbelowapplytoexaminationsconductedandsupervisedbytheInstitute:
i. Candidateswillbeallowedtoregisterfornotmorethanfourcourses inonesitting.
ii. Registrationforexaminationsshallbedoneintheprescribedmanner togetherwiththeprescribedfees.
iii. Studentsmustclearalloutstandingduesbeforeregistrationfor examinations.
iv. Examinationsshallbeconductedasscheduledbytheinstitute.
v. Noclasseswillbeconductedduringthescheduledexaminationperiod.
4.2 Examination assessment procedures i. Assessmentofallstudentsforeachcourseunitshallfollowthe structureandmethodsasapprovedbytheExaminations&Awards Committee.
ii. UnlessotherwiseapprovedbytheExaminations&AwardsCommittee, astudent’sContinuousAssessmentmarkwillbecombinedwiththe summativeassessmentandthetotalwillconstitutethefinalmark ofaparticularcourse.
iii. Registrationforacourseisautomaticregistrationforanexamination, providedthestudenthaspaidalltherequiredtuitionandexamination duesasrequiredbytheinstitute.
iv. Acandidateshallbecreditedwithapassinacourseifs/hehas obtainedaminimumof50%inthefinalmark.

v. Therequiredminimumclassattendancewereapplicablewillbe prescribedintheapprovedcurriculum.
vi. Astudentwhofailsacoursewillbegivenachancetoregisterand re-sitthecourse.S/heshallre-sitthecontinuousassessmentaswell.
4.3 Examination Time-Table
i. TheHeadofExaminationsshallberesponsiblefortheproduction oftheexaminationtime-tablethatwillindicatetheCourseUnitname, venue,dateandtimeofexaminationsessions.
ii. Thedatesoftheexaminationsshallbesenttothestudentsandstaff atthebeginningoftheyear.
iii. Theexaminationtime-tableshallbepublishedonallstudentnotice boardsatleasttwoweekspriortothecommencementofexaminations.
4.4 Examination Rules and Procedures
i. Onlycandidateswillbeallowedintheexaminationroom.
ii. Candidatesshallentertheexaminationvenue30minutesbeforethe examinationscommences.
iii. CandidatesshalldisplaytheirIDcardswithaphotoonentrance intotheexaminationroom.Theseshallbecheckedagainstthe attendancelistsbyinvigilators.
iv. Noelectronicdevisesshallbeallowedinthestudents’possession duringexamination.Onlynon-programmaticscientificcalculators areallowedintestsandfinalexaminations.
v. Anymaterialbroughtintotheexaminationroomshallbeinspected. Bags,books,papersshallnotbeallowedintheexaminationroom. Itisanoffenceforacandidatetohaveanymaterialrelevanttothe workbeingexamined,unlesstheexaminerhasexplicitlyauthorized suchmaterial.

vi. Duringanexamination,anyformofcommunicationbetweenstudents togiveorreceiveanyformofassistance,academicorotherwiseis prohibited.
vii. Acandidatemustnotleavetheexaminationroomuntil30minutes afterthecommencementofwritingtimeoftheexamination.No studentwillbeallowedtoenteranexaminationafter30minutesfrom thecommencementoftheexamination.Studentswhoarrivewithin thefirst30minutesaftertheexaminationstarttimewillnotbeallowed additionaltime.
viii. Attheconclusionoftheexaminationallcandidatesmustremainseated untiltheirpapersarecollectedbytheinvigilatororuntiltheinvigilator hasgiventhempermissiontoleavetheexaminationroom.
ix. Aninvigilatorwillreportanyconcernsthatariseoutofthebreachof thispolicytotheHeadofExaminationsortotheExaminations& AwardsCommittee.
4.5 Examination Session
i. Itistheresponsibilityofthestudentstoconfirmthedate,timeand venueoftheexamination.
ii. Onlyeligiblecandidatesshallbeallowedintheexaminations venues.Theapprovedguidelinesforconductingandinvigilation ofexaminationshallapply.Necessarydisciplinaryactionwillbe takenwherestudentsdisobeytherulesandregulationsof examinations.
iii. Astudentisresponsibleforsecuringhis/hereligibilityforthe examinationsandtopresentthenecessaryidentificationdocuments totheinvigilator.
iv. Invigilatorsareresponsibleforensuringthattheexaminationis conductedinamannerthatnostudentisadvantagedordisadvantaged duringthesession.

5.0 EXAMINATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Studentswithdisabilitiesmustnotifytheinstitutemanagementinwritingof theirdisabilities,at the timeofadmissionto theprogramofstudyoratthetimewhenthedisabilityoccurs.Thedisabilitywillbeassessedandappropriate remediesmaybeput intoplacewithin the resourcesof theinstitute.Adjustments to the examination conditions for studentswithdisabilitieswillbemadewhileprotectingacademicstandards.
6.0 EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
6.1 Forms of Examination Malpractice.
i. Leakage:Thisiswherethecontentofanexaminationorpartofitis disclosedpriortotheexamination.
ii. External Assistance:Thisiswhereacandidate(s)receivesassistance duringtheexaminationsession.
iii. Smuggling of foreign materials: Thisiswhereacandidatetakesinto theexaminationroom,inpersonorthroughanagent,unauthorized materialsincludingbutnotlimitedto,condensednotes,books, handkerchiefsonwhichinformationiswrittenon,orinformationwritten onthepartsofthebody.
iv. Impersonation:Apersonfalselyrepresentshimself/herselftobea candidatesittingfortheexamination,oracandidateasksanagentto sittheexaminationforhim/her.
v. Misconduct:Thismayoccurduringanexaminationroomoraplace appointedasavenueforanexamination,orwhereacandidatefailsto obeyanylawfulorderoftheInvigilatororanExaminationSupervisor appointedbytheInstitute.
vi. Plagiarism:Astudentwhousesmaterialfromawrittenorelectronic sourcewithoutproperattributionwhenwritingtheircontinuous assessment.Astudentmayalsousetheworkofanotherpersonand passthisoffastheirown.

6.2 Procedure for dealing with examination malpractice cases
AllcasesofExaminationmalpracticewillbereviewedby theAcademicDisciplinaryCommittee in accordance to the approvedguidelines.The AcademicDisciplinaryCommitteewillmake recommendations to theExaminations&AwardsCommitteewhowillmakethefinaldecisionontheExaminationmalpracticecaseandcommunicatetothestudent.
Astudent/candidatewhoisdissatisfiedwiththedecisionoftheExaminations&AwardsCommitteemayappealtotheGoverningCouncilwithin30daysfromthedateofthelettercommunicatingthedecision.Theappealshallbeinwritingaddressedto theChairmanof theGoverningCouncil,statingclearlythegroundsofappeal.
6.3 Penalty for Examination Malpractices
The penalties that shall be awarded to students found guilty of involvement in Examination malpractice will include;
i. Strongwarningtothestudentii. Cancellationoftherelevant(orall)examination(s)iii. SuspensionfromtheInstituteforagivenperiodoftimeiv. DismissalfromtheInstitute
7.0 REMARKING
i. Candidateswhoaredissatisfiedwiththeirresultsmayapplyfor remarkingwithin14daysfromthedateofreleaseofresults. Thecandidatewillberequiredtopaytheapplicableprescribedfees aftertherequestfortheremarkhasbeengranted.
ii. Theremarkingshallbedonebyanexaminerwhowasnotinvolvedin themarkingofthatcandidate’sexaminationscript.Themarks allocatedbytheappointedexaminershallsupersedetheinitialmark thatwasawarded.

iii. Theresultsoftheremarkwillbecommunicatedafter21daysofthe closeoftheappealperiodforremarking.
8.0 REVOCATION OF AWARD
Theprocedure for revocationofawardwillapply if it isbrought to theattentionoftheInstitutethatapersonwhowasconferredwithacertificateordiplomaoranyotheracademicqualificationawardedbytheInstitutewasnotentitledtotheaward.
Revocation of award shall be on the basis of, but is not limited to, the following;
If the person;
i. hadnotfulfilledtheconditionsprescribedforadmissionintothe programmehe/sheobtainedtheaward;ii. hadnotcompletedtherequirementsfortheaward;iii. obtainedtheawardasaresultoffraudordishonesty;oriv. obtainedtheawardinerror.
The recipient will be expected to;
i. ReturntheoriginaltranscriptandcertificatetotheInstitutewithin thirtydaysofthedateofthatnotice.
ii. Nolongerbeentitledtopresenttoanypersonthatheorsheisthe recipientofthatdiploma,certificateorotherawardandmusttake stepstonotifyanycurrentemployers,educationalinstitutions, professionalregistrationbodies,associations,orothersasapplicable, thattheawardhasbeenrevoked.
TheInstitutemaynotifypartieswithalegitimateinterestinknowingthisinformation,thattheawardoftherecipienthasbeenrevoked.Therecipientshallbeconsiderednevertohavereceivedtheaward.
ApersondeprivedofanawardmayappealtotheGoverningCouncilagainstthedecisionoftheExaminations&AwardsCommitteewithinthirtydaysfromthedateofnotice.
