The North Loop Neighborhood, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is both historically and aesthetically unique. At once, it was home to a large railroad yard and numerous warehouses and factories, characterized by massive structures constructed of load-bearing brick.

Now, these buildings are being renovated into upscale condominiums, offices, shops, and restaurants, maintaining the old brick structure and applying modern steel and glass, further developing its unique character and creating an expressive juxtaposition of old and new.

North Washington Avenue and Sixth Avenue North, both strikingly different in quality of condition, offer a connection to downtown, making them the two main transit ways in the site.

Each of these can be viewed as an artifact, an object we can grasp in a single moment. However, architectural relevance is gained from more than just artifact. Effect can reveal unique characteristics, shining light on the elements not captured in a single moment.

The sounds of the site are observed over a certain time which is set by the observer. How these sounds relate and juxtapose reveals that site sound is not just a single artifact, but both a natural and man-made effect.

The sounds of the site are made by both human and natural causes. Two sounds boxes are placed at a corner, one at wind level and one at human level with a recorder in between to capture the natural and man-made composition.

K N I T T I N G T H E F A B R I CJ U X T A P O S I T I O N A R T SIntervening within a site is much more than simply placing a building in a designated spot. It should be helpful in clarifying or strengthening that place, merging with the city and creating a new dialogue.

That intervention need not be a unified identity, but rather an identity that achieves maximum engagement with thepublic realm.

By placing the building at the intersection of North Washington Avenue and Sixth Avenue North, the possibility for public interaction increases, due to the area’s high density of traffic.
