AKKO, ISRAELTrinity-in-Akko has been offering courses for our students since 2009. The Akko Field School is a summer archaeological program in Akko, Israel, a historic and dynamic city located on the Mediterranean Sea. This program has successfully run for the last five summers as part of a consortium with Pennsylvania State University. It attracts undergraduate and graduate students to an environment rich with opportunities in excavation, field analysis, field trips and an exciting lecture series on historical, archaeolog-ical and current issues in this unique location. In the summer of 2014 qualified students have the option to focus on underwater excavation, archaeometallurgy and soil, faunal analysis, architectectural conservation, or GIS mapping. Students who participate in this program have a unique opportunity to experience a working archaeological site and the rich history of the city of Akko.

ROME, ITALYThe Trinity College Rome Campus has been offering undergraduates the opportunity to study in the “Eternal City” for more than 40 years. The summer program has evolved and customized its offerings to an extended five-week program, where students take two Trinity College credits in a number of disciplines. Possible course options include art history, Italian language, the city of Rome, and Italian culture. There is also the option to take specialized three-week courses for one credit. Past three-week options have included art history, art conservation, and neuroscience. In the summer of 2014, there are two new courses being planned. Courses vary each year, and students can select their program upon application. Students who study at the Rome Campus gain a rich, in-depth opportunity to experience Rome on a program thats offers exceptional academics suited to student interests.

BARCELONA, SPAINThe Trinity-in-Barcelona program has offered summer courses annually since 2008. The four-week program offers students two credits. All students take a course on the history of the city of Barcelona. They also take an intensive language course geared for beginning or intermediate-level Spanish speakers. Students who study on this program will have a strong Spanish-language component and the opportunity to learn about both Spain and Catalonia (the region of the country where Barcelona is located). The program includes many cultural activities and visits. The summer of 2014 will offer an option for a specialized neuroscience course for one credit. The course will run for three weeks at the end of June 2014. Barcelona, the capital of the Mediterranean, is a dynamic, cosmopolitan, multicultural city that is one the most innovative examples of urban development in Europe.

Increasing numbers of Trinity College students are studying away in the summer, and the Office of International Programs (OIP) wants to help you join them! Trinity offers its own summer programs in locations around the globe. While many destinations vary by year, a variety of classes are offered in different disciplines, many led by one or more Trinity faculty members. These programs provide you with the opportunity to receive one or more credits toward your Trinity degree while gaining firsthand international experience. Most programs are three to six weeks and offer one to two credits. The OIP also advises students on non-Trinity summer study-away options and winter-break opportunities.

PAST and FUTURE SUMMER PROGRAMS

The China Summer Program offered 2009-2013, is an example of a successful, faculty-led, summer program. It is multidisciplinary in scope and has offered courses in environmental science, history, and urban studies. Students start their studies in Hartford and travel to multiple cities in China and other cities in Southeast Asia (past programs have taken students to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.) Students gain a comparative, firsthand perspective on the global and urban challenges facing this rapidly changing region.

Other programs and courses offered periodically include the following: Cambodia in Context (history and photography); Trinity-in-Berlin (urban studies, language, and culture); Trinity-in-Florence (economics); and Trinity-in-Italy for IDP students.

Summer 2014 will have updated and new courses in Rome, Barcelona, and Akko. The China Summer Program is in development for 2014.
