Dear Students, Dear Parents

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the seventh edition of the Swiss Education Fair.

The institutions present at the Swiss Education Fair 2016 – including Universities, Universities of Applied Sciences , Hospitality- as well as Boarding Schools – represent Switzerland’s fi nest pre- and tertiary educational institutions. All of them command considerable respect among their global peers.

Switzerland’s educational institutions are the backbone of our society and economy, continually producing highly skilled individuals whose expertise is sought after around the world. Being one of the largest investors in education and research worldwide, Switzerland offers opportunities for personal and professional growth through innovation, diversity and drive for perfection. It lays emphasis on the exchange of knowledge via its multiple partnerships and collaborations with world reputable research institutes. The variety of courses and programs equip students to manage the various challenges of today’s global environment. In multiple professional areas, from Banking, Pharma, Architecture, Engineering, IT to Hospitality, Alumni from Swiss institutions face challenges with a solid academic training, a balance of technical and service oriented skills, along with a passion for details. As these Swiss alumni move on to explore the professional environment, they all become world citizens engaging with Swiss standards and innovation spirit.

Singapore and Switzerland have always placed a strong emphasis on the excellence of its education, and the existing collaborations between both countries are evidences of this common objective. Furthermore, the recent interest of the Singapore government in the Swiss dual education system shows that both countries have still very much to share in terms of education.

Studying in a foreign country is not only an educational experience but also a personal journey. While educational institutions assist in this endeavor, surroundings and environment also play a role. As a country, Switzerland offers a wide array of interesting opportunities to learn outside of a formal school setting. Home to four distinct cultural regions, our small country, nestled in the heart of Western Europe, is easily explored by public transport. The unrivalled natural beauty of our lakes, rivers and mountains presents a perfect setting to revitalize one’s mind in peaceful surroundings. Furthermore, the cultural diversity makes it an enjoyable place to live and discover new horizons.

For centuries Switzerland has been attracting those eager to learn, excited to explore and willing to teach. I therefore encourage you to inform yourself, enjoy discovering this multifaceted country and to make the most of the opportunities presented at the Swiss Education Fair 2016.

With a student body from 150 different countries, the University of Geneva is the second largest university in Switzerland, and also hosts the largest number of female students.

UNIGE comprises nine faculties (Science, Medicine, Arts, Social Sciences, Economics and Management, Law, Psychology and Educational Sciences, Theology and Translation and Interpreting). There are also several Interdisciplinary Centres (informatics, neurosciences and environment...). UNIGE offers more than 290 types of programmes and more than 280 Continuing Education programmes covering an extremely wide variety of fields such as exact sciences, medicine, humanities, social sciences, economics, law, etc. Its domains of excellence in research include life sciences (molecular biology, bio-informatics), physics of elementary particles, and astrophysics. UNIGE leads and co-leads six National Centres of Competence in Research: PlanetS, SwissMAP, Chemical Biology, Affective Sciences, Synaptic Bases of Mental Diseases and LIVES-Overcoming vulnerabilities in a life course perspective.

In addition the UNIGE has led the NCCRs Frontiers in Genetics and MaNEP from 2001 to 2013 and have been integrated into the University.

Just like the city of Geneva itself, the university enjoys a strong international reputation, both for the quality of its research (it ranks among the top institutions among the League of European Research Universities) and the excellence of its education. This acclaim has been won in part due to its strong ties to many national and international Geneva-based organizations, such as the World Health Organization, the International Telecommunications Union, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is one of the nine professional universities recognised by the Swiss Confederation. Founded under federal law, SUPSI offers more than 30 Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree courses. This year SUPSI counts 3,507 Bachelor, 671 Master and 6,750 Continuing Education students. The four fi elds of activities are: First level University Degree Courses, Continuing Education, Research and Services. Great care is given to research, carried out in key sectors on competitively acquired projects with large European and national agencies or mandated by organisations and institutions.

Drawing inspiration from our guiding values of concreteness, originality, multidisciplinarity, partnership, innovation, territoriality and internationality, our Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes have been designed with the aim of combining cutting edge technical-scientifi c methods with a practical and professional approach, leading to an internationally recognised university degree. In direct contact with the teaching staff, which consists of professors-researchers and professionals who conduct established activities outside the university, problems and situations are tackled in their context, adopting methodologies resembling those to be found after graduation. In order to meet the growing need for balance between study requirements and work or other commitments, courses are, whenever possible, also conducted in parallel with professional activity, or in fl exibility format.

Since its foundation, SUPSI has completed numerous research projects related mainly to the scientifi c areas covered by its didactic programmes. Research is conducted in key sectors by means of projects won in competitions held by major European and National Agencies, or commissioned by companies and/or institutions.
