The Research Centre for Sustainable Energy (FOSS) was created in order to play a key role in research and technological development activities in the field of sustainable energy within Cyprus and at international level with the aim of contributing to the achievement of the relevant energy and environment objectives set out by Europe. FOSS has broad collaboration with the industry in Cyprus and facilitates R&I and best practices in the field of RES & EE.

The following selected thematic priorities were presented and demonstrated to the partners participating in the study visit:

Renewable energy sources (RES) with an emphasis on solar energy Distributed generation and new technologies for electrical power

systems Smart electricity networks New technologies including energy storage and ICT, which are

necessary for developing a smart grid environment Energy efficiency and energy saving Energy efficient buildings

The Cyprus Carlsberg Brewery is considered one of the most "sustainable" companies in Cyprus and combines both, art-brewing technology and energy efficiency measures.

The measures implemented in the brewery are divided: 1) very little or no capex measures, 2) low cost measures and 3) measures with capex.

Very little or no capex measures 1.Training personnel: Developing an energy culture for all the staff member including CEO2. Getting ideas for energy savings from the personnel through a reward scheme

Low cost measures1. An energy audit was performed in order to map the energy consumption 2. Lighting was targeted by retrofitting all non-LED fixtures to LED ones 3. Variable Speed Drives were installed to all pumps and fans4. The insulation of steam pipes was improved5. Improved the performance of the compressed air system – maintenance, regular checks for leaks, replace non efficient air compressors6. Put in place an Energy Management System

Capex measures1. Energy Recovery System (heat)2. Voltage Optimization Systems3. Installation of 100kW PV plant

Also, the brewery was benefited from the operational programme and got subsidy for EE measures.

The partners had the chance to discuss different innovative solutions with the staff of the research centre and exchange experience and ideas. Many of the solutions (e.g. storage) demonstrated at the research center can be implemented in different sectors and uses.

Finally, the partners had the opportunity to check the EE&RES measures that the Carlsberg Brewery implemented. A beneficial discussion was developed between the partners and the senior engineer of the brewery, stressing that the financial benefits are not always the priority for the company and the energy actions bond with the environmental responsibility.
