9STYLE EXPERT

If, like most fashion fans, you’ve ever dreamed of owning a wardrobe full of Chanel couture, you’ll be glad to hear that the iconic Karl Lagerfeld has finally created a collection that’s realistically priced and accessible to all.

The KARL collection landed in Selfridges this month and is full of exquisite investment pieces in his trademark muted colour palette. Covetable and chic, the line is achingly sophisticated – draped jackets, box pleats,

beautiful fabrics, fine wool dresses, oversized sequins – but also shows the kind of edgy glamour we’ve come to expect from the Lagerfeld atelier.

Biker jackets, embellished accessories and high-shine patent leather all lend the line a dark vibe, that makes the collection perfect for grown-up women who like a little rock-chick with their sleek tailoring. Proving the wit of Mr Lagerfeld, there are even super-cool t-shirts bearing the designer’s face.

Opening up about his new KARL creation, the fashion legend recently told Vogue magazine: “It’s a graphic idea of what I like, what could be translated from me to girls. It’s very graphic: black and white, silver and grey. Chanel is me doing Chanel, Fendi is me doing Italy and this is me doing me, whatever that means.”

Mr Lagerfeld came to London to launch the collection with a party at Selfridges on Oxford Street. Surrounded by fans and celebrities, he said: “The drama of this collection, it’s an inspiration. In a way, it’s me so I have to be careful not to get too into it because I don’t expect everybody to dress like me, you know. That’s why I like this collection with the t-shirt to make a joke out of me, because I think I am a cartoon. I think inspiration is a muscle, and this muscle has to be used all the time. The more you do the more ideas you have. I don’t believe in waiting for inspiration. If you think about department stores, there are not so many, you know, worldwide. Selfridges is one of them.”

The KARL collection sits alongside another quirky new launch from Mr Lagerfeld - Team Karl - in a cool pop-up shop inside Selfridges. The range was inspired by the Olympic Games, and features the gold, silver and bronze colours of the medals in all of its designs. You’ll also find a limited-edition range of artistic t-shirts in collaboration with much-loved design agency, I Love Dust, in the Karl Lagerfeld pop-up at Selfridges...but you’d best be quick, they’re set to fly off the shelves. See you in the queue!

It’s been a busy two years for Robbie Williams. He’s reunited with Take That and toured the globe in a fabulous comeback show, got married, worked on a new album and is about to become a father any day now. The reformed bad boy also found time to launch his own fashion line last year, menswear label Farrell, and this season, the new autumn/winter collection has arrived in Birmingham, exclusively at Selfridges.

Robbie, who confesses to having always had a keen interest in fashion, says that Farrell was inspired by Jack Farrell, his grandfather. A notable sharp dresser, he was known as Jack the Giant Killer, and was a strong man who had great integrity, honesty, good manners and a sense of humour. It is these qualities that Robbie wanted to form the foundation of Farrell and they’re now ingrained into the brand ethos at

every level, from the way design ideas take shape to the way the clothes are presented on the shop floor.

The debut Farrell collection launched in September 2011, and became an instant hit.

Farrell is unmistakeably British, with a strong respect for classic Savile Row tailoring. Who is the Farrell man? Designed for men who like a perfect fit and a little flair in their clothing, Farrell delivers classic wardrobe staples suitable for a night in, an afternoon at the footie or a night out. ‘Wear it in, wear it out’ is Farrell’s motto.

Every piece within the Farrell collection is designed to become a longstanding part of a man’s wardrobe, growing and evolving with the wearer over time. Robbie wanted the label to be very British, very elegant, and witty too: the must-haves of the collection

are neat coats: frock coats, pea, wool overcoats and the timeless Harrington. As the design team see it,

this “signifies Farrell’s dedication to British style and the principles of men being men.”

For A/W ’12, Farrell further explores its British history for a collection deeply rooted in military themes, taking inspiration from utilitarian silhouettes infused with British-made fabrics. Continuing to build on the core strength of Farrell’s outerwear this season, the new pieces have exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship, producing contemporary takes on classic styles, rich in heritage. New for the season is the poacher’s Jacket, featuring an outer-shell wax cotton produced in a British Millerain, in Yorkshire.

Military references are everywhere in the range. There’s a military control trench-coat, with historical dome buttons and made of traditional compacted dense wool, to repel water and keep in heat. Farrell continues its partnership with the iconic British milliner Christy’s, as hats get added to the collection: Melton Wool and super-fine felt foldaway trilbies, which will sit alongside the existing baker boy styles.

Dee Sarai, General Manager of Selfridges Birmingham says: “The partnership between Robbie Williams and Ben Dickens has seen the creation of a collection with great accessibility and a clear vision of the wearer, perfectly suited to the Selfridges consumer. We are thrilled to welcome Farrell to Selfridges’ extensive contemporary menswear offering.”

ROBBIE WILLIAMS’ FARRELL

THE CREATIVE TEAMWhen it comes to his own label, only the best creative minds will do for Mr Williams. In November last year former Burberry Design Director Ben Dickens joined Farrell as Head of Design. Ben now works hand in hand with Robbie to develop collections and expand the brand season on season.

Robbie Williams told us: “Ben Dickens arrived bringing his optimism, passion and vision to my granddad’s clothing line. The more we talk, the more ideas we throw around - it’s exciting. It’s very similar to making an album: after all that’s what an album is. It’s an idea. What is art? It’s an idea, as are clothes. We are at the tip of an iceberg, and it is an iceberg. Come join us, we are many.”

Meet the hosts…Model hosts Adele Rushton

and Jamie Roche talk awards,

modeling and Birmingham

How did you get involved in the MFDA?

Adele: We both attended the show in 2010 and were intrigued as to what the awards were about. I whispered to Jamie, “I love this show! We need to be involved in it next year!”

What do you love about hosting the awards?

Adele: The whole involvement from start to finish.

Jamie: It’s great that we have awards like this in Birmingham. There is nothing else like it providing a spectacular platform for emerging designers, with fantastic prizes and benefits.

What format does the night follow?

Adele: We start with a warm up act, a welcome and introduction to the awards by myself and Jamie, then straight into the show itself.

Being a couple, do you like working together?

Adele: A good percentage of our work is together. I think clients like the fact that our interaction is believable and natural.

Jamie: We’ve got some amazing stories from our adventures together!

Do you feel pressure to be stylish all the time?

Adele: I try to be as stylish as I can, but effortless at the same time. It’s not always easy, but I do feel that in our line of work it’s important to be well polished and groomed.

Jamie: Not really because we both love fashion and everything that surrounds it, from the glamorous events to being styled head to toe.

If you weren’t a model, what would you be?

Adele: A vet. I love animals and have a strong passion for animal welfare.

Jamie: I did all sorts before I modeled, from pizza delivery boy to rough and ready scaffolder, so I’d probably be in someone’s garden pruning the bushes!

What do you like about Birmingham?

Adele: I know if I need an outfit for a special occasion or event I can pop into Birmingham and know I won’t come out empty handed.

Jamie: The shopping and the nightlife. I lived in London for a short time, and Birmingham is just as cosmopolitan but on a smaller scale.

Favourite shop?

Both: Selfridges. You can get everything under one roof.

Favourite bar?

Both: Apres in Summer Row, then on to Mechu where the party starts.

Favourite restaurant?

Adele: We went for a lovely romantic meal at Pushkar on Broad Street recently. The food is traditional and authentically Indian.

Jamie: Marco Pierre White in The Cube. It definitely has the wow factor and the views are immense.

Benjamin, Ryan and the team will be putting their heads together to create the latest seasonal hairstyles to compliment the A/W12 catwalk styling of SBL, as well as providing their unique take on the biggest hair trends for the coming months.

Benjamin Matthews, Managing Director said: “As an independent salon, it’s great that we have been asked to work on Style Birmingham Live for the second year running. We’ve worked in Milan, Paris and London, so it’s fantastic to be bringing something back to our hometown of Birmingham, which is such an important place to us. Birmingham is not just the home of our business, but also the home of cutting edge fashion, style, and inspiration. Style Birmingham Live is the biggest fashion event in the area, and we’re thrilled to be showcasing Benjamin Ryan’s creative looks once again.

Style Birmingham Live 2011 was a brilliant event. The fashion show was a stunning collection of the season’s trends, which was complemented by Benjamin Ryan’s creative styling. Since then, everything at Benjamin Ryan Hair & Beauty has gone from strength to strength. In the past year we’ve been working with designers on editorial shoots, as well as being part of the Great Western Arcade annual fashion show. We’re having great success with our new beauty services, and continuing to offer a fantastic bespoke hair styling service to our ever-expanding client base.

As for the future of Benjamin Ryan Hair & Beauty, we’re honoured to have been asked to provide creative hair styling services for the Midlands Fashion Designer Awards, to be held in October. Again, this is a great chance to showcase our work in the city that we love. We’re also busy preparing for our annual Benjamin Ryan Collection, as well as our very own Catwalk Show.”

TOP TREND FOR THE SEASON … THE ROARING TWENTIESThe trends we’re loving this season are being influenced less by the runway, and more by iconic movies; fitting the hairstyle into a story and a lifestyle. One of our favourite looks is that of the 1920s, the first era of the celebrity icon. Expressive and statement looks were crucial at this time, with clothing and hairstyles defining the individual.

We’ve used this look for our inspiration in salon to create modern yet vintage inspired hairstyles. Short bobs with soft waves are key for women, whereas the men’s look is very groomed with an edge. The key to getting this preppy look just right isn’t just about having a comb in the top-pocket, but getting the haircut right by either working the undercut very high or very low; there’s no room for anything in between. A perfect example is Leonardo DiCaprio in the Great Gatsby film, and Chanel’s pastel twist on the classic bob. These looks capture everything we love about this iconic period of The Roaring Twenties.

LadySarah Roberts asks ‘At what age did you find your own style and who inspired you?’

I remember watching all of the big supermodels on George Michael’s ‘Freedom’ video when I was growing up, and thinking how beautiful and different all the girls were. I used to sit in my house in the Eastend getting lost in Vogue magazine too – it was real escapism and a huge inspiration for embracing who you are and accepting your differences. It was in my early to mid-20s that I began to get the guts to try more things out and I had real fun trying! As an actress, the dressing-up box thing has never left me.

Siobhan Carlill asks ‘What’s the one item in your wardrobe that you can’t be without?’

I love French style and fashion, so for me it has to be a vintage beaten-up biker jacket over a beautifully embellished gown. This season I’m also loving leather skirts –I’ll wear mine A-line with a tight black polo neck – it’s just something staple that you can make work for both day and night. I can’t wait to get stuck into the A/W collections at Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Topshop – one of my all-time favourites is Zara – if that store closed I would cry!

Shareen Munir asks ‘What does the future hold?’

I’d love to keep doing things that I’ve never done before and finding things that fulfil me. I’d love my own chat show, more TV stuff and more novels. It would be great to do some gigs again, even if they weren’t successful, I just love music.

Jeanette Hubbard asks ‘Which celebrity would you most like to do a style makeover on?’

It would have to be Rachel Riley from Countdown. She’s so beautiful but I just want to rock and sex her up a bit. It wouldn’t be right for her job, but I think a rustled-up look after-hours would be fabulous.

Martina Honeyghan asks ‘How would you define Birmingham?’

Birmingham’s a very eclectic city – it’s definitely getting recognised and is standing up to be counted. My old PA was from Birmingham and he always used to say that he was so proud of the city, but it needed to be proud of itself. That was over 10 years ago now, but being here and involved in such a major fashion event, it really feels like that’s now happening – I think he’d be happy!

IN A WHIRLAutumn is usually all about rich shades and textured fabrics, but this season the runways showed a lot of print and pattern, too, usually the preserve of spring collections. At Jean Paul Gaultier there were punky graphics, baroque swirls at Dolce & Gabbana and even blowsy florals, as seen at Giambattista Valli. These understated patterns at Miss Selfridge are wearable for autumn: red floral top £35 and skirt £39, blue top £35 and shorts £25.

We’ve fallen in love with the autumn/winter collection of timepieces from Storm. Top quality and fashion-forward, the watches work for office, weekend or night out. We’ve teamed up with Storm to give away two watches from the new collection: a women’s on-trend rose gold Zarina worth £129.99, and a men’s retro colour-pop Revolvex, worth £89.99.

The Revolvex features Storm’s signature revolving discs, is water-resistant and made from high grade brushed stainless steel. The Zarina features an enamel strap and sparkling crystal dial and is also available in white and black. You can find the Storm store in Bullring.

For your chance to win, simply answer this question and let us know which watch you would like:

Which other colours is the Zarina watch available in?

Enter online at stylebirmingham.com, or send your answer and watch preference, full name, address and email address to Storm competition, Style Birmingham, Publishing Ink, Fifth Floor, White House, 111 New Street, Birmingham B2 4EU by the closing date of October 1.

• Terms and conditions apply (see online). Subject to availability, alternative prizes may be substituted. No purchase necessary, no cash alternative.

A S T O R M WAT C H

If you’ve already started making plans for party season, you’ll be glad to hear that Boux Avenue in Bullring is launching a limited edition lingerie collection with Swarovski crystals this October. The hero of the range? The Ultra Boost padded plunge bra (£50, 32A-34DD/38C) which promises to increase your natural bust by two sizes. There’s a matching thong too: £20, in sizes 8-16.

UNDERCOVER STORY

ADD PEPPeplums continue to dominate fashion into the autumn. Daunting it may seem, but the humble peplum can be a figure-fixer, making the waist look smaller and hiding lumpy hips. Well, if it works for Kim Kardashian, who are we to judge? Dorothy Perkins has a clutch of dresses with subtle peplums this season: pink dress £30, and patterned £39.50.

WIN

ON TOP Primark’s taken a battering in recent years, as canny shoppers turned away from fast fashion and invested in love-forever pieces instead. But the brand has bounced back this season with its best fashion collection yet: no more sequin party girl tat, but instead an indie geek-girl range that’s full of interesting quirks, such as oversized knits and trainer boots. Worth a new visit for sure. Models wear lace blouse £12, cardigan £14, printed trousers £14, and polo neck jumper £7, blouse £12, cardigan £12, leggings £12 and wedge trainers £18.

MICRO-TRENDSleek, chic and dripping with stealth wealth, the Fifth Avenue princess trend comes straight from the A/W ’12 catwalks of Hermes, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Celine. Think faux fur that looks real, killer accessories, structured handbags, classic tailoring with a Mad Men, Manhattan-in-the-Sixties feel. This ‘haute couture heiress’ look is all about looking polished, put-together and a little bit prim. We heart.

It’s hard to imagine what we lived in before UGG boots burst onto the UK scene, more than 10 years ago. Originally worn by surfers in Australia, New Zealand and California, UGG boots first became popular here after celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker, Pamela Anderson, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz were spotted relaxing in them on film sets in the late 1990s.

These days, sheepskin boots are everywhere: worn as slippers, weekendwear, to festivals, after work-outs, on the commute, with jeans, denim shorts, you name it. UGG Australia – the original and best – rose above the sea of lookalike brands, and soon began expanding and diversifying into leather biker boots, clogs, ankle boots and more. Using the same UGG technology and commitment to top-quality materials, UGG’s new fashion ranges are as

comfortable and hard-wearing as they are cute and fashion-forward.

For autumn, UGG has been inspired by New York, creating a collection that’s catwalk-ready but also urban, cool and beautifully made. There are pebbled leathers, dark wood soles, antiqued studs to add edge and touches of trademark sheepskin and shearling fur. Choose from a capsule collection of ankle, calf and knee boots, all-weather boots, heels and handbags. From September, House of Fraser will be launching a dedicated UGG® Australia area in their department store in Birmingham, on the lower ground floor. Customers will be able to browse a wide range of the bold new UGG® Australia fall ‘12 line, inspired by the iconic city of New York.

gentle glowIf you’ve got a pale complexion like beautiful British rose Emily Blunt, you might think bronzers are not for you. But YSL launches a fab new generation of ultra-subtle ones this season: slick on YSL Dare to Glow in Tempting Gold, £28, and Palette Couture, £39.50, for a barely-there glow.

AUtUMn looKSWarren Holmes, International Creative Director at Nicky Clarke, shares his top three new season hair trends

“The dip-dye craze is everywhere, from downtown Manhattan and East London to the bars of Birmingham. Prada captured this mood in its entirety. It’s all about individual style.

Try a risqué fringe, a la Rooney Mara from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Her heavy blunt fringe astutely complimented her delicate, elfin facial features. The feeling is to build a character,

to be somebody different. Clip-in fringes are essential and hair can be worn up in a no-fuss ponytail or topknot or down and bedhead, as we saw on the runway at Versace.

Be brave with colour: the louder the better for blondes. Length is key and if your hair isn’t long enough, work in some extensions: aim for sleek, one-length straight hair channelling a 90s aesthetic.”

BUDGET VS BLOWOUTTwo skin-savers to smooth fine lines and give a great glow

SCARLET WOMANUnderstated, super-groomed beauty is a key trend for A/W ‘12, as seen at the Jonathan Saunders show where models sported satin skin and subtle Russian-red lips. “It’s about timeless classics done in a modern way” says Terry Barber, MAC’s director of makeup artistry. Prep lips with MAC Lip Conditioner SPF15, £11, and add a crush of colour with the MAC Pro Basic Red Chromagraphic Pencil, £13.

Lisa Shepherd has made her name by helping people achieve the perfect look through their hair. By selecting the right hair colour, she genuinely made people look 10 Years Younger. I simply had to pay Lisa a visit to see if she lived up to her amazing reputation and could transform my sun-damaged hair into luscious autumn locks.

From the second you walk through the door of Lisa Shepherd’s salon, you are greeted with a smile, a ‘how are you today’ and a fridge full of juices, wines and beers to quench your thirst. All this and much more tells you you’re not just in for a haircut; you’re in for a real treat.

You’re led through to the beautiful salon area in which Lisa has preserved the ornate ceiling of the bank that the building housed before – the ceiling also makes a handsome view when leaning backwards over the basin.

Settle in to one of the obscenely comfortable chairs while your stylist discusses your requirements with you. As I sat down with Lisa, she described what she wanted to do with my colour as a ‘Jennifer Aniston style’. I gave her free rein and told her to go with her instinct. What woman wouldn’t want to look like Jennifer Aniston? Work your magic, Lisa.

She started by mixing colours together to create my base – this is the first colour they put on which is intended to look as natural as possible. My natural colour is a rather dark brown, so Lisa suggested I go for a slightly lighter colour with highlights. Lisa gives off an air of experience that makes you trust her implicitly with the future of your treasured tresses, so I agreed.

Lisa refuses to follow the ‘rules of colour’, tailoring each shade to the individual sat in the chair.

She will not just choose one colour and slap it on your hair; she mixes several colours together to get the specific shade desired … that’s why they call her the Colour Whisperer.

While my base colour was doing its job, I was led through to the waiting area where a coffee machine awaited. Select a magazine from the rack (Style Birmingham, perhaps?) or surf the net on one of the customer iPads while you sip the beverage of your choice and relax in the comfortable chairs.

Colour ready, I was washed and prepped for the next stage: highlights.

Strands of hair were intricately selected to receive the blonde colour and I was offered another drink while I waited. Once my highlights had taken, my hair was washed again and I was given a conditioning treatment to enhance the shine of my hair. As the treatment was working, I was given the chance to experience the luxury of a massage. I sincerely urge everyone who goes to the Lisa Shepherd salon to accept this offer. The massage chair sends relaxing waves down your body, relieving any tension that you may have left in you, while a trained member of staff gives you a deep scalp massage. You will drift away into a state of complete relaxation – not something I thought I could achieve mid-afternoon on a Thursday.

So, if what you’re after in a trip to the salon is an all round experience, then look no further than Lisa Shepherd. The only downside to my treatment was that I had to go back to work afterwards, but I walked down the street with a renewed spring in my step, the type of spring that only comes from a new hairdo. And yes, for all of you wondering, I am now changing my surname to Aniston.

Just a few cool and classic pieces will update

your wardrobe for autumn

WELL TIMED

Police has a new range of watches that are super-lightweight and perfect for weekend action: £140 each, H Samuel.

BUY NOWTweed is autumn’s friendlier alternative to the ubiquitous leather jackets that popped up all over the new season catwalks. If you like to layer, this is the piece for you: from tees to cashmere V-necks, shirts and waistcoats, a tweed blazer is ideal, and sends a refreshingly English eccentric message into the bargain. This one from the Sartorial collection at Marks & Spencer, £199, has designer-esque slim tailoring that is very Vivienne Westwood meets Savile Row.

M I C R O -T R E N DIf you buy only one thing this autumn, make it an oversized woollen scarf. No longer the preserve of Dr Who and dusty academics, the scarf is having a fashion moment, and the great thing about it is that you can keep the rest simple: it teams as well with a chambray shirt as it does layers and a tweed jacket. Check out the selection at River Island, Gap and Republic for extra-long knitted numbers.

TREND REPORTIf you’re more of a jacket than coat man, now’s the season to switch things up. The classic winter coat is the key piece for A/W ‘12/13, in sleek silhouettes and dark colours. On the catwalk at Armani, Prada, Givenchy and Tom Ford, this year’s take on the coat is all about luxury textures – wool, mohair, cashmere – double-breasted styling and even a belt, for the fashion-forward. We’ve checked out the new range at Topman, and it’s bang on-trend, in shades of pure black and masculine charcoal.

R O L L U PAs summer fades, there’s no need to consign your slimfit chinos to the back of the cupboard. Autumn’s trousers are still colourful, with textures including corduroy and moleskin coming to the fore. Mix in a chunky knit sweater and brogues to channel this season’s English heritage vibe.

Rocha.John Rocha coat £145, roll-neck £45, trousers £40, and shoes £140, all available at Debenhams.

September is here and the fashion world is rolling into action with new collection launches for autumn/winter.

Farrell, the menswear label by Robbie Williams and his design partner Ben Dickens launched their autumn winter collection in Selfridges at the end of August. On his design process, Robbie said: “I see myself as a DJ of clothes. I remix things that I like – it’s a lot like music. I know what I like – every piece in the collection is based on pieces from my own wardrobe which I love.” Inspired by his grandfather Jack Farrell, the brand is about heritage and Savile Row inspired pieces like the olive wool Great Coat with dome buttons £325, perfect for the military trend going on this season, the waxed Poacher Jacket and fine felt Foldaway Trilby.

Another quintessentially British brand, Hackett London opened their concession in Birmingham’s House of Fraser in August. Hackett has the perfect all-weather parka with a faux fur hood, £525 for those cold and windy autumn days. Matalan’s cheap but chic parka version at £45 also taps into the mustard colour trend we will be seeing around a lot in the next few months.

Flannels in the Burlington Arcade celebrates Stone Island’s 30th anniversary with a special collection by Massimo Osti, in store now. The 30/30 jacket, which is based on the very first Stone Island collection, can be worn 30 different ways. Nigel Cabourn’s new

Arctic explorer inspired collection arrived in Flannels on September 20; a limited edition of 13 styles are named after explorers and the styles closely imitate the original garments. The heavenly thick but light Herbert G. Ponting down coat at £1,200 is the ultimate cover-up for a cold winter ahead.

Wide leg trousers were all over the catwalks nodding reference to the Great Gatsby, but to make them work in everyday life, it’s best to opt for a style that’s not too obvious. Anyone who saw photos of David Gandy in a wide legged pinstripe suit during London Men’s Fashion Week in June might agree that they weren’t the most flattering. So step forward grey, brown and blue plaid wool trousers by Kolor at £625 from mrporter.com with just the slightest tapered hem so they sit well on top of shoes. Wear with a fine-knit sweater for a great casual smart look.

If you’re looking for a suit update that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, head to Matalan. Their exclusive suiting range designed by Taylor & Wright includes impeccably tailored jackets from just £49 with matching slim line trousers from £20. Experiment with a burgundy coloured suit at £69 to spice up the usual black/grey palette. Available early October.

In the footwear department, Chelsea boots are still the boot of choice and Kurt Geiger’s funked up version with burgundy elastic at £110 works as well

with jeans as with smart trousers. Onitsuka Tiger is bringing out their smartest trainer collection to date with styles in black, brown and blue leather and suede. We’re loving the Alty in black leather at £90.

Looking for a new timepiece? Diesel’s watch collaboration with top tattoo artist Mark Machado aka Mr Cartoon, is being stocked in Goldsmiths from October 1. The collection pays homage to Mr Cartoon’s LA roots with vibrant mural designs.

To look great suited and booted, some attention to grooming is in order. Lee Stafford has brought out über-cool Weapons of Mass Grooming kit at £34.99 available exclusively at Argos that will tackle any unruly hair issues. It comes in a handy travel bag with attachments for hair cutting, beard trimming and body tidying. For finishing touches, nothing beats Black & White original wax £4.99 for hair.

WASH OUTEven when it’s raining, summer is hard graft for the skin. Sweat, humidity, pollution, free radicals, dust, pollen, the list goes on. Take the day off by upping your cleansing routine at night: a powerful facial wash will lift dirt out of the pores and head off any breakouts. We tried and tested Lab Series power wash, £19.50 at Harvey Nichols: it’s effective without stripping skin of its natural oils.

King of the super-luxe world, Marc Jacobs has launched a new fragrance that’s all about fresh notes and a lingering summer holiday vibe. Marc Jacobs Splash Kumquat is £29 for 100ml at Harvey Nichols.

Tom Ford’s got a new fragrance and it’s as effortlessly cool and stylish as the rest of his signature collection. Tom Ford Noir is sophisticated and sensual, mixing notes of black pepper with masculine florals, leather, amber and vanilla and a crisp top note of citrus verbena. From October, it’s £60 at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges.

FIGHT TIME

If those tell-tale first fine lines are starting to creep in, take action now with a lightweight moisturiser. Boots has a good one: Botanics Men’s Anti-Ageing Moisturiser SPF 15 and 5* UVA, £7.99, feeds skin hydration at the same time as blocking the sun’s harmful rays.

SILVER FOXGoing grey gracefully? Take a tip out of Clooney, Le Blanc and Stiller’s books and keep your colour silvery rather than yellowing. The new [3D]Mension Grey Shampoo, £9.25, from Schwarzkopf Professional, neutralises yellow tones and strengthens hair at the root so your greys don’t take on a life of their own. Stocked at salons: schwarzkopf-professional.com

5 1STYLE MEN

I get very excited about ‘made’ stuff. I wrote a book a couple of years ago called Principles of Home where I asked people to really appreciate and value the craftsmanship of the ‘made’ world. Everything on this planet gets me excited, from dams to space rockets, coat hangers to spoons. Everything is designed and built by people, individuals who are passionate and talented; people who have one brain and a pair of hands. Whether you’re an engineer, a designer or a maker of spoons, it is those two hands and that brain that make the difference between us and the rest of the planet. Without that, we’d all be living in caves!

Presenting wasn’t something I planned. I was asked if I would go on television and talk a bit about lighting once. Then they asked me back to do a bit more, and a bit more and then they asked me if I would talk about colour and pigment and then furniture and they just kept asking me back! Then Grand Designs came along; it’s given me a huge audience and I’m grateful for that.

Grand Designs has been going for 13 years, and in the new series this autumn we will be filming our 100th episode. It coincides with the Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham, so we’ll be celebrating at the show!

At Grand Designs Live 2012, we have loads of exciting things going on including a Nano Village which is a celebration of some of our best projects in model form. Grand Designs is in the best health it has ever been. I’ve also got a book coming out this autumn as well as some really exciting projects.

People often ask me what kind of house I live in. Well, my house is old, crumbling and falling apart! I’ve done lots of things to make it more comfortable, but I’m a building conservationist at heart so I’ve put in things like secondary glazing

and insulated everywhere I possibly can without damaging the fabric of the building. I’ve also put in biomass and solar panels.

I try to be as off-grid as possible. I drive a little diesel Volvo, a thrifty little C30; you could call it an ‘eco’ car. I do try to live a relatively ‘green’ life, but we all have an impact. You can’t be invisible on the planet, you can just try and be a bit more frugal.

The Green Deal government scheme is being detailed this autumn. Retrofitting our existing homes to low carbon standards is just about the most significant thing we can do. There are 26 million existing homes in the UK. It doesn’t matter how many new ‘green’ homes we build; it’s getting our existing homes to be low energy, low carbon and low resource that’s got to be the important thing. February 2013 will see an outline of finance packages that will be available to homeowners. It’s a very exciting offer from the government as it means grant aid is available so that the homeowner doesn’t pay for upgrades. At Grand Designs Live we have a couple of seminars explaining exactly how

The Green Deal is going to roll out that will be very useful to listen to.

We Brits are great leaders in engineering, but we need to demonstrate to the world that, as the cradle of the industrial revolution, we have the drive and the passion to also be the cradle of the post-industrial revolution.

People continue to build the most amazing variety of projects in the most remarkable places, each one with a different story. I’m constantly amused at how varied they all are. That’s the secret of Grand Designs; if it was just a design series we would have great difficulty, but architecture unfolds in so many different ways that it makes the stories more interesting.

My favourite ever Grand Designs was Ben Law in the woods in Sussex. He made his own house of timber that he felled. It was such an elegant film about sustainability, a lovely story and a beautiful building in the end.

The most disastrous would have to be the boat in Medway which I think is now floating somewhere in the North Sea!

As for Birmingham’s ‘grand designs’, The Cube certainly caught my eye. It’s a very exciting building. Ken Shuttleworth’s design was extremely radical. I’ve visited the new library a couple of times too. It’s huge! It’s going to be extraordinary inside with the central space and the atrium which is good because it will encourage people to go inside; that’s where the true architectural experiences will lie.

My favourite building in the world is the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Turkey. It’s a façade of a Roman building that’s just very beautiful.

Grand Designs Live is at the NEC from October 12-14. Visit granddesignslive.com for more information.

200g caster sugar

4 large free-range eggs, at room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

60g plain flour

60g Divine Cocoa Powder

50g pecan nuts, chopped

1 x 100g bar Divine White Chocolate chopped

150g fresh raspberries

What to do:Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4, fan 160. Prepare a 28 x 18cm x 2.5cm deep brownie tin or baking tin. Grease tin and line with greaseproof paper. Roll out the pastry and use it to line a 23cm loose bottomed pie tin. Line with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind for 20 minutes.

Whilst the pastry is baking, prepare the filling by pureeing the beetroot along with the eggs in a food processor.

AUTHENTIC INDIAN DINING

C o u r t. J e n n i f e r Wa l k e r w e n t t o s a m p l e t h e c u i s i n e

INDIAN DININGItihaas Brasserie is the new venture from the owners of Itihaas fine dining restaurant in the Jewellery Quarter. It maintains every inch of the fine dining feel in the quality of the food, but in a more accessible, ‘fast-food’ style environment, convenient for shoppers and diners alike.

On a rather wet and windy British August evening, two of Birmingham’s greatest Indian food lovers dined at the brand new Itihaas Brasserie in Selfridges. Greeted by the friendly faces of eager-to-please waiters and chefs who, you can tell, would do anything to make your dining experience one you will never forget, we settled in and soon became blissfully unaware of the shoppers darting around behind our backs. We started with a glass of Las Condes Chardonnay from Chile (£3.40 glass, £14.50 bottle) to ease us in to the task ahead: deciding what to order.

We chose to share a couple of the Mumbai street food plates to start to get the best possible experience of Itihaas. Dahi puri is a dish of crispy wheat shells with deggi mirch, spiced potato and chickpeas with onion, tomatoes, sweetened yoghurt and tamarind water.

The delicate, crispy shells with the sweet yoghurt and tomato blended beautifully with the heat from the deggi mirch spice and the texture of the chickpeas. A real feast for the taste buds. We also tried the chicken samosas, which were packed with garam masala, spiced chicken, cumin peas and sweet onions and were quite possibly the tastiest samosas I have ever eaten. All Mumbai street food dishes are £4.99 each. Try three for £12.99 or four for £16.49.

We decided to choose from the grills and kebabs menu for our mains, my friend opting for the lamb tikka and me trying the grilled salmon. The lamb tikka (£8.49) was succulently grilled on a tandoor with cumin and yoghurt, a pickled salad, mint dressing and chutney, all served on a chic slate plate. If you like spicy meat, you

will love the lamb tikka dish. The grilled salmon in a banana leaf (£9.49) was cooked to perfection with a melt-in-the-mouth consistency, coated in mustard seed and turmeric citrus with a pickled salad, mint dressing and chutney. From the sides menu we chose a portion of the Bombay scented mogo chips (£3.50), citrus and red chili Cassava chips with a tamarind water dip, a perfect accompaniment to

any Indian dish. The superb presentation of these dishes prevents you from wanting to break in to eat, but once you have admired the look, you will be even more taken aback by the taste.

Too full for dessert, we decided not to force any more food down. Instead, the attentive chef took us round to see the ‘takeaway’ section of the restaurant where shoppers can stop by to take home some tasty treats. We gratefully accepted some Indian sweets to enjoy on the ride home including a caramel and pistachio slice and a coconut square.

Itihaas literally means ‘history’ in Hindi. That is exactly what you get to sample at the exciting new Brasserie in Selfridges Birmingham, a piece of Indian history. Choose from the vast menu of Mumbai street food, chat and dosa (Mumbai snack food), Middle Eastern wraps, curries, grills and kebabs, and form your own opinion of the divine land of India. All dishes are prepared in front of your eyes and cooked to order so you can be sure everything is fresh and how you like it. Whether you want a quick bite after work, a business lunch or a longer meal with a loved one, Itihaas can cater to your tastes and leave you wanting more.

TRMNL PRESENTS AN AFTERNOON WITH SOUL C L A P

Cause n Effect are local due Chris Laurence & Kane. Their array of fun, energetic, party orientated house, garage and disco has developed their large following in the city and led

to regular appearances around the UK.

We started out seven years ago under the alias Dub Melitia. We got together in the studio one day and started churning out 140bpm bass heavy dub tracks; little did we know that things would take off and a few months down the line we were playing in clubs all across the UK. A few years went by and in 2009 we found GLAS, a summer beach party at the Rainbow which has proven to be Birmingham’s most successful club night, playing a vast mixture of house and garage. The sounds we heard captivated us and we formed a new alias, changing our style completely.

We’re very versatile with the kind of stuff we make. Anything from sampling old swing records to liquid dustup or even more bass driven house. I think it depends on what mood we are in when were in the studio. We like standout artists like Pleasurekraft, Hector Couto, Justin Martin, Skrillex and Nero. There

are so many good producers coming through so as long as it’s well produced, we’re all ears.

It’s great that we are capable of reaching out to a worldwide audience. Sonny Fodera of Beatdown Music has always been so supportive of what we do and he makes sure he gets it to the right places at the right time. We hope to continue with a string of solid releases in the near future.

Birmingham is great. GLAS puts 100% in to every party from the production to the DJs. The venue – The Rainbow, Digbeth – has a brilliant vibe. Also at The Rainbow, the new Saturday night after party 2:31 has taken over the city, showcasing some amazing talent. The Birmingham club scene is definitely on the rise and we are really pleased to be part of the movement.

We don’t have big plans or humongous ambitions; we simply enjoy spending time in the studio making good music. If others are feeling what we are doing then that’s a bonus, we have a few releases lined up for Beatdown and Maraca.

After two standout events this summer featuring The Martinez Brothers and Secretsundaze, anticipation and hype surrounds TRMNL’s autumn/winter program. First in line is one of the most exciting duos in the world… Soul Clap. Their 2010 anthem Extravaganza and legendary DJ Kicks mix set them off on a two-month tour around the world playing six-hour DJ sets. Their debut album E funk on Wolf + Lamb was released just a few months ago (featured in the May edition of Style Birmingham) and has only added to their credibility and

worldwide following. With summers spent touring the world and winters in Miami training at ping pong and charting new musical territory, Soul Clap continues their quest to be the hardest working duo in the game.Sunday September 30 - Daytime Terrace Party - 2pm-Midnight at Lab11For more information and future TRMNL dates see: www.TRMNL.co.uk

Few producers in the history of dance music have made such a rapid and far-reaching impact on the electronic music scene as Bristolian Daniel Pearce aka Eats Everything. While some producers spend years finding their feet, Dan made a clear statement of intent with his debut release, Entrance Song. It was championed all summer long by the likes of Seth Troxler, Carl Cox, Jamie Jones and Jon Digweed. By the end of last year, Dan had set a record by being the first dance music producer to have two different tracks featured

on two different shows on Radio One for 13 consecutive weeks. With huge support from Pete Tong, Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and

Andy George & Jaymo, Eats Everything has rapidly become the toast of the UK airwaves. As part of a Futureboogie showcase, Birmingham based Jukes of Hazard complete the lineup for what is set to be another sold out party at the Kings Heath venue.

British rock band Elbow has been making music since their formation in 1997, but was thrust into the mainstream in 2008 when the single One Day Like This, featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra earned them a brand new set of fans. 2011 saw their debut UK tour selling out and an acclaimed Glastonbury set with a series of unique shows in unique places including the crypt of St. Paul’s Cathedral. 2012 is so far proving to be another busy year for the Elbow guys as they began to brew their own beer and write the theme music for the BBC’s Olympic coverage.
