Some of the IPL Teams have been spotted partying at FTV Sandton. Players include: Graeme Smith, Shayne Warne, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher, along with many other South African and International cricket players.

South Africa’s Wonderbra girl Elbe van der Merwe was also spotted partying the night away with the cricket-ers.

Cape Town is usually the scene of many international film crews and A-list celebrities, but Johannesburg is catching up. Recently the crew and actors of a new movie, The Bang Bang Club, arrived in the city to start filming. Some of the Hollywood stars from the movie, Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman and South African born actor Frank Rauthenbach all partied at FTV Sandton in April.

PICK SIXWe pick six must have fashion items that can be worn a gazillion times

Add colour and brighten up any outfit with a bold scarf like this one from TRUWORTHS.

One piece, one hundred ways to wear it. A cape can be worn with pants, jeans, skirts or tights. We love this one from FOSCHINI.

A little bling goes a long way. Check out these gorgeous drop- earrings from EDGARS.

Invest in a dress that can double as shirt worn with tights. Try this look from TRUWORTHS over a polo neck and opaque tights.

Crown your head with style. Hats are scoring huge points this sea-son like this one from CLAIRES.

Show your wild side with this cap sleeve jacket. Wear it over a polo neck, dress or button up shirt. This one’s from EDGARS.

Layers are a great way to wear your winter pieces differently to create a unique look and add warmth

Layering is a huge trend this season, embraced by many designers and if anyone knows how to work layers it’s Diane von Frustenberg. Check out the gorgeous pieces we loved from her Fall 2009 Fashion Show and use them to inspire your own style.

Layers not only provide warmth, but can be worked in many ways to give you hundreds of different looks.

Wear items over or under other pieces to create unique outfits with your own personal signature. When shopping for pieces, look for items

that compliment each other. Pair a pretty shirt over a polo neck jersey, or under a warm v-neck sweater.

Tights, boots and knee high socks can all be worn together to get a dif-ferent effect. Try folding your knee high socks over your boots for a subtle flash of style.

Remember layering can be applied to many pieces, but be careful not to go too wild. Layers done right give you a sexy, striking look, but lay-ers done wrong can make you look bulky and well, very Ugly Betty.

Give legs the attention they deserve with statement tights in a wide range of stylesFrom plain and simple to totally ‘out there’ and bold, tights were all over the runway at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - Fall 2009.

Christian Sirano does a sexy, sophis-ticated classic; pairing a jumper jer-sey with statement, patterned tights and boots.

Anna Sui and her signature, bright, bold trend worked on this patterned dress, paired with sheer, coloured tights and knee high, blue cowboy-

style boots.

BCB Max Azaria, embraces the very trendy ‘wet-look’ legging in gold and pairs it with a clean and simple dress, drawing attention to the legs.

Miss Sixty adds a rock and roll edge with blue, animal pint tights paired with a bold, pink top and a cropped jacket. Worn here with over-the-knee boots, a hat and leather, fingerless gloves.

STYLE CANDY

For a while now I have been ru-minating on the idea of ‘style’ and what it means to be given the enviable title of ‘great per-sonal style’.

There are certain people who just have it. Be it the fashion designer who confidently in-habits his or her design ethos without any deviation, or the

thrifty shopper who effortlessly throws together an outfit from a seemingly incompatible mix of garments. Kate Moss has it, Coco Chanel had it, and the Olsen twins seem to be continually fashion-forward too.

Is style inherent, or can we learn to be stylish by sticking to some seemingly simple rules? For example should we play it safe and stick to wearing the LBD, a white collared shirt, wide legged pants, a black blazer or scarves, shoes and bags in shots of colour? What about basic bootleg blue jeans or the infamous, essential sti-lettos?

Do these pieces make up style or is style about the details; the quirky additions to an outfit to possess it and to enhance it? This then surely is about personal taste, culture, trend interpretation and personality. And it is prob-ably more about instinct and less about trying, training and testing. Fashion for fashion’s sake can be a hard task to master. Just think of bubble skirts, wet-look leggings, platform shoes, neon brights, body-con dresses, shoulder pads and

itchy, sweaty lycra; not something every one can pull off. Notably fashion is for the young, tall and waifish; an artistic expression which gets diluted and re-interpreted, as it trickles down from the catwalks to the malls and store rails.

Style then is not really about fashion – it’s about wearing timeless garments, but with a punch of the present. I’m hoping that ‘style’ can be a progres-sion.

There are those who own it from the day they are born; they dress their dolls in artful displays of aesthetic understanding and they go on to be-come the fashion editors and stylists of the world. And then there are those like me, where finding a personal sig-nature is a process of elimination and is related as much to

age, comfort and mood as it is to trends. And perhaps yes, this does mean resembling a chameleon in the search of the title ‘stylish’!

The essense of

She wields the power of chiffon, tulle, tartan and off-the-wall embel-lishments.

KG: What do you com-municate through your designs?

RI: Individualism, colour, life, collage, fun and confidence. Have fun! Enjoy getting dressed in the morning! Most South African women’s style is emotionless. Take chances and enjoy your clothes because what you wear can change your day.

KG: What would you like your fans to feel when wearing one of the garments from Rozanne and Pushkin?

RI: I want them to feel happy, special and improve their day with a new sense of excitement.

KG: Where do you find your in-spiration?

RI: From anything and every-thing. It can be from a piece of vintage lace, to a song, to a pe-riod in history. I have to be aware of current trends, but I always try to put my own personal twist on things.

KG: Where do you see South Af-rican fashion going?

RI: I see South Africans in the future learning how to style their own outfits and having fun with getting dressed in the mornings.

KG: What is your design philosophy?

RI: Provide clothes for real people who want something to make them happy and brighten up their day.

KG: What do your shops mean to you?

RI: My shops are what drive me and have taught me more than any varsity course could have. I love Rozanne & Pushkin and my clients, that’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.

KG: Who are you as a businesswoman?

RI: I am no longer just designing, I am also a buyer, importing from Greece, London, Thailand, Australia, France and Italy. So I design, buy, do my own book-keeping and own the 2 stores, working in Johannesburg.

KG: Your clothes flirt with quirki-ness and off-beat individuality, how do you keep the designs fresh and when do you know to stop and not go over board with the embellishments?

RI: Ha-ha, perhaps some think I do go overboard, but I do think I’m learning. I keep my ideas fresh by not being stubborn, but rather by listening to my clients and seeing what they want to wear.

KG: What sets the Rozanne and Pushkin label apart from other South African brands?

RI: I’m very ambitious and love, love, love what I do. With regards to my age, perhaps my energy levels are higher and I’m not set in my ways.

I realise that I have lots of mis-takes to make and I’m willing to adapt in order to improve my business. I also think that some designers who work in studios get carried away and design for themselves, instead of the per-son wearing the garment.

Spending so much time in the shop, I have become very aware of what people want and unflattering silhouettes, even if mod-ern, is not one of them.

KG: What makes you tingle with excitement as far as life and/or your designs go?

RI: Before it was designing a range and then seeing it on the runway. Now its having repeat customers coming into the store wearing Rozanne & Pushkin garments, and walking out happy and excited to wear their new outfits. It’s the best! And it’s happening more often than ever; I have even seen people in Cape Town wearing garments from the shop.

KG: What to you is the definition of style?

RI: Style is individual and is owned by someone who takes pride in her appearance, knows how to layer her outfits and feels comfortable and confident.

Life is way too short to wear a boring outfit. S

up pouch is quite small, measuring at about 12cm (width) and 9cm (height). The pouch, with the FUPS zipped inside has a depth of about 4cm. See I told you, it’s small!

There is nothing quite like this product, and it is an absolutely, fabulous invention! It’s not surprising then when I tell you the makers of FUPS are the same geniuses that came up with the Cherry Hand Bag Organiser; which we featured on Style-Scoop a while back.

FUPS come in three sizes - Small (to fit sizes 3-4), Medium (fits size 5-6) and Large (to fit sizes 7-8). I’m a size 6 and the me-dium pair fits me perfectly. I opted for black, but it may be a good idea to get both shades to suit your different outfits. While you may think black is the only option, champagne works like flesh coloured heels, making your legs look longer and would suit lighter coloured outfits too. Recommended price: R230.00 Available from: Cherry agents and via the Cherry Brand web-site - www.thecherrybrand.com.

Don’t you just hate it when you go to a club in your favourite, sky-high, killer heels only to end up walking barefoot because your feet just cant handle more than an hour of dancing? While many of you will say “stuff it” and walk barefoot on the dirty dance floor; that by the way is probably covered in beer and cigarette ash,

I consider myself to be a bit of a snob in that department. Per-sonally I’d rather suffer with blistering feet than walk around barefoot at a party - unless of course, its a pool party we’re talking about - Not even I’m that bad!

So, I’m sure you can imagine my excitement and approval when I was sent a pair of Cherry FUPS to try. FUPS, which stands for Fold-Ups are cleverly designed ballet flats that, as the name implies, fold up, allowing you store them, even in your eve-ning purse. They come in two shades (black and champagne) and are made from a satin fabric that makes them very com-fortable - Trust me ladies, I put these on to review and forgot I was wearing them.

The soles have been specially designed with two separate pieces, to allow them to fold up, and the elasticated trim en-sures even your throbbing feet will be comfy. So you can stay on the dance floor and still look stylish and in-tact.

So you’re thinking - genius, but now what do you do with your heels? Of course you can’t shove them in your evening purse and the last thing you want to do is leave them out for some-one to take home. We are after all talking about heels here, your prized possessions and for some of us, our only assets - seeing as we did spend all our money on them, making them somewhat of an investment. OK, you get the picture.

Each pair of FUPS comes with its own, zip-able pouch that neatly holds your FUPS until you need them. Then, when you do the FUPS/Heel switch, the pouch expands (from additional fabric on the inside), allowing it to transform to a larger bag that is able to accommodate and store your heels. The zipped

I currently live in Johannesburg, but I went to an all-girls boarding school in Natal. A reunion and a birthday were a perfect excuse for my husband and I to go away (without the kids), for a few days to the coast. I think my

darling “Banker” saw this as an opportunity to dis-tract me from the annual depression which de-scends upon me around my birthday.

This year I made a con-scious decision not to get depressed, or rather not to get too depressed on my birthday. I was not turn-ing 30 yet, but entering a rather dangerously close territory of late 20’s. Attending a reunion was used as a destruction mechanism.

Oddly enough, it worked as it kept me far more focused on meeting my old friends and firmly ignor-ing the thoughts of an impending birthday.

Personally, I was very excited about the reunion. I couldn’t wait to see my old friends and catch up. Facebook/Skype/MSN

are wonderful tools to stay in touch, but nothing can replace social interactions and face-to-face conversations. On the list

of priorities was also to check out how people have changed and evolved over the past decade.

Going back to school after ten years was truly surreal. Attend-ing the chapel service and singing a school hymn was an experi-ence in itself. At least we were allowed to use hymn books this time and no one was handing out deten-tion slips for poor singing. I watched the Matric girls (not even sure they are

called that anymore) with fascination in their full Mat-ric regalia and I was amazed how young they looked! Surely ten years ago we didn’t look so little? Did we?

We had high tea in the quad area outside the library, eating the scones that I admired so much

during my school years - always trying to hatch a plan of get-ting my hands on those sumptuous treats. The school tour fol-lowed. The Drama Room still had our hand prints on the wall...

A ten year high school reunion and a birthday all rolled into one week-end creates a perfect opportunity to look back, reminiscent and take stock of life learns EVEGENIA POPLETT

yes the Legends of ’99! Some of the teachers that taught us remembered our class as being the naughtiest – what a great reputation! Old loyalties came to life as we walked past the Sport House notice boards. It was fascinating to see how much the school has changed, yet at the same time remained exactly the same.

The highlight of the tour for me, was visiting the boarding house. I was amazed at the size of the rooms - surely they have shrunk? Reading the rules of the house, I was relieved that these rules no longer applied to me.

The flood of memories and nostalgia, coupled with an amaz-ing sense of belonging made me rather emotional. What is ten years after all? Sometimes it feels like it was only yesterday when I was locked away from the world in this convent.

We had lunch in the dining hall, sitting with the class of ’89, ’79, ’69, and ’59. A framed photograph of our class in Matric was placed on the table. Oh dear, we did in fact look very little. We also looked awkward, naive and immature. Gladly, we have changed. We now look more refined, more composed, more sophisticated and just more comfortable with ourselves.

I also remembered how ten years ago my mom picked me up from school after my art exam and we went out for dinner to celebrate my 18th birthday. This memory brought tears to

my eyes, since my mother passed away a few years back after a long and tortur-ous fight with cancer.

A ten year flash back: uni-versity, graduation, mar-riage, kids, laughter and tears; I made friends and I lost friends. I faced fears and acknowledged failures. I had successes and regrets and only relatively recently found my passion. So yes, a lot can happen in ten years.

All in all, I had the most amazing birthday and I am glad I went to the reunion. It somehow helped to soften the blow of turning a year older. It is ironic, but I felt so good about my life. I am relieved I am no longer a child. People are finally starting to take me seriously. Now is the time to get noticed and make a difference in the world.

I simply must add that I look a lot better now than I did at 18. I am healthy and full of energy - what’s not to celebrate?

A few weeks ago I had a puncture. I was heading up Fields Hill and sud-denly noticed a strange noise com-ing from the right passenger side. I immediately knew I had a flat tyre. Now, for those of you who don’t know Fields Hill – It is a steep and extremely twisty pass that takes you from Pinetown up into Kloof. If you are familiar with the hill, you will

know that there is no safe pull-over space and it’s packed with trucks and other traffic. Stopping to change the flat on the hill is a definite no-no. So I slowed to a crawl and made my way to the top in search of a safe spot for my pit stop.

Fortunately at the top of Fields Hill there is an ideal pull over section not too far from the shops and petrol stations. I got the flat tyre off in a time that Lewis Hamilton’s pit crew would be proud of, and dug around in the boot for the spare. I drive a Ford Focus Diesel and I’ve only had the car for about four months. And like most complacent motorists I haven’t both-

ered to check the spare or the contents of the changing kit. Thankfully everything was there, including the spare wheel, which in my Ford’s case is an embarrassingly skinny “space saving” type. A biscuit wheel in every sense, emblazoned with “WARNING-DO NOT EXCEED 80KM P/HOUR”.

Nowadays more and more of the cars on our roads are Europe-an Spec. In other words they come with all the kit that people in Europe would get on their cars. Same radio and CD player, same climate control features, rain sensing wipers, light sensi-tive headlights etc.

The trend in car design these days, is to fit massive wheel and tyre combinations, which generously fill the wheel arches and give it that sporty look. Nice if you’re on the race-track-smooth roads of Europe, not so much on our pot holed atrocities we call roads. However, I’ll be the first to say that it does look good; big, shiny alloy wheels to me, can make even the ugliest car look a lot more attractive. But there is literally a huge price to pay when it comes to replacing the tyres.

After phoning half a dozen tyre retailers, demanding the best

price for my tyre replacement, I settled on a whopping price of R1689, fitted and balanced. Some of the competition even quoted me nearly R2000.00. Good thing I was sitting down when they told me the price, other-wise I would have been out for the count.

You must understand that the wheel and tyre combination on my car is nothing fancy; it is the standard rim and tyre that came fitted on the car. It also turns out that the tyre on my Focus is a very rare size and is used on very few vehicles.

Now for most people tyres are just there for the sole purpose of attach-ing the car to the road – essentially that’s exactly what they do. For the better part of their life they go ig-nored until someone eventually points out that they’re knackered and in need of replacement. So what do you do when your tyres need a new life? Without going into too much technical detail, let’s look at passenger car

“ check with your insurance as to the lowest acceptable tread permissible on your

will not cover you.”

tyres; The tyre fitted to my Ford Focus is a 205/50 17 93W. Now, you’re probably thinking what the hell does all that mean?

Allow me to simplify; “205” refers to the width of the tyre, not the diameter, but rather the width of the tyre if you are looking at the tread pattern. So 205 actually means 205mm or 20.5cm.

“50” refers to the tyre profile and in car-talk you can have either a low profile or a high profile tyre. Gen-erally, a passenger car has low pro-files while off-road vehicles have higher profile tyres - and for good reason too. A passenger car will spend most of its time on the road, whereas a 4x4 won’t. If you take your sporty Mini Cooper off-road, the chances of getting a puncture

are high because the tyre fitted is not suited for off-road driving. The tyre profile is the space between the rim and the edge of the tyre. Got it? Some cars are fitted with ultra low profile tyres

for example 225/35. These are usually fitted on very fast cars, or cars that demand excellent grip and road holding, but are in-creasingly found on more and more Citi Golf’s around SA, espe-cially in Durban.

The “17” refers to 17 inches. This represents the size of the rim that the tyre can be fitted to. Your car might have 14 inch rims or if you have a Range Rover Sport, you’ve probably got 20 inches.

“93” refers to the load index and “W” refers to the tyre’s speed rating. Another marking on your tyre to look out for is the tread ware indicator. This is sometimes marked by a “TW”, somewhere on the tyre or by an arrow, but sometimes it’s not marked at all. The tread ware indicator is usually found in the deepest section of the tread and will look like a raised section in the tread groove. It usually runs the width of the tyre. The purpose of these mark-ings is to indicate the wear of the tread of your tyre. Once the sur-rounding rubber has worn to the level of these markings; it’s time to look for replacements.

It’s a good idea to check with your insurance as to the lowest accept-able tread permissible on your tyres. In case of an accident this is important because if it’s too low most insurers will not cover you. Tyre manufacturers will also print the maximum possible pressure the tyres can be inflated to; this doesn’t mean you should do this. Rather refer to your cars’ hand-book or the sticker on the inside driver’s door. This is a good place to start and they usually give you the pressures for laden and un-laden.

If you fit new rims and tyres to your car, check with the salesman to get the correct tyre pressures. Also buy yourself a good quali-ty tyre pressure gauge and check your tyre pressures often, once a month at least. Asking the petrol pump attendant is all good and well, but fore court gauges are often inaccurate. Check the pressure when you set off in the morning, when your tyres are cold, not when you get to the service station after a long jour-ney. The heat in tyres will give a different pressure reading to when they are cold.

Over or under inflated tyres can lead to uneven pressure which, in the long run just costs you more as you will have to replace them quicker.

Balancing and alignment is crucial and should be done every 10/15 000km. So if you car pulls hard to one side of the road, or there is a bad shudder from the steering wheel, get it checked

out sooner rather than later - you will save yourself time and money in the end.

When it comes to buying a new car don’t be afraid to ask ques-tions. Ask the salesman if the rim and tyre combination on the car is the standard size, or if it’s the more expensive option. Check whether the car comes with a full size spare, a “space saver”, or none in the case of BMW, who prefer to fit Run Flat tyres. Run Flat tyres can be safely driven up to a certain speed even if they are punctured; however they cannot be repaired and are hugely expensive - upwards of R2000.00 per tyre.

Make sure you are familiar with how to change a tyre. Get your husband or boyfriend to show you and practice it one day so

you are confident you can do it yourself. Or you can just show some cleavage and a bit of leg to the first male motorist who passes you on the freeway and get him to do it for you instead.

When you do have a puncture, take the tyre to a reputable dealer and ask them to check it. Most of them will tell you that you need a new tyre straight away. Ask them to show you where the punc-ture is. Generally if the hole is in the shoulder or sidewall it can’t be fixed, as it can be dangerous. But, if it’s in the tread section of the tyre, it could probably be plugged. So double check before your replace.

A good rule of thumb if you have to replace a single tyre is to re-place it with the original brand that was on the car. Replacing one tyre with a different brand

and tread pattern could upset your cars alignment and/or han-dling. If you are replacing two or even four tyres then phone around for a better price or even a different brand and don’t be scared to haggle for a good price.

Like with the cars, stay away from dodgy Indian and Chinese brands that you have never heard of. Stick with the mainstream suppliers and well known brands.

Looking after the tyres on your car is relatively easy and simple and can save you a lot of money at the end of the day. I hope this article gives you a bit more information and a bit more con-fidence when buying a new tyre for your car.

And when that weird dude with the dodgy cap in the street says, “Ahhh Lanie, dig your jammie, those big rims and low pro-file rubber looks schweet man!” you’ll know exactly what he’s on about.

Exercise not only helps you lose weight, but it also has a myriad of other health benefits – it helps lower your stress levels, it keep your bones strong and it also increases your libido. This message is not new – by now, you’ve probably heard this message, or some version of it, repeatedly throughout your life.

What is new however, is the ap-proach that many South Africans are taking to exer-cising. People are finally starting to realise that they don’t have to beat it out on a treadmill or lift weights again and again and again – they are instead explor-ing different forms of exercise. They are looking for activities that speak to their individuality and fit in with their lifestyle – and they are finding their exercise pro-grammes are much more successful under this approach.

Many people are turning to a variety of dance classes which en-courage freestyle creativity, while others are seeking out mar-tial arts, which teach discipline and various fighting techniques.

“Capoeira offers the best of both worlds – it is a traditional fusion of martial arts and dance,” says Master Paulo Palinhos, co-founder of Casa da Capoeira - The first ever Capoeira school in South Africa. Often de-scribed as a “dance-fight”, Capoeira in-corporates elements of self defence, fighting techniques and acrobatics with tradition, culture and music.

“It presents an intense physical and mental challenge for both men and women – in fact, this martial art appeals to people from all walks of life and of any body shape, because it encour-ages self expression, improvisation and creativity” he adds.

SO WHAT CAN CAPOEIRA DO FOR YOU? Capoeira offers an excellent full-body workout, which in-cludes cardiovascular and strength training. When playing a game of Capoeira (this martial art is largely non-contact and there is very little “fighting”), two opponents will face each other in a roda (a circle formed by other Capoeira players, who watch the interaction, clap, sing and play instruments). While moving to the beat of the music, the players will begin

“a conversation” with their bodies – defensive and offensive movements like kicks, lunges and even acrobatics.

Some kicks are high, some are low. Sometimes you are standing up right or you might even do a cartwheel to get out of the way. Other times you are low on the ground, weaving a deceptive path around your partner. And that is just in the roda. You train for

all these movements in a class, one by one.

All this translates into is a strong, toned body – the legs become incred-ibly strong, abdominals become tight and arm muscles (yes, even women’s arms) become toned and defined.

“Your body becomes athletic – long, lean and flexible,” says Paulo. “As well as increas-ing strength and agility, practising Ca-poeira will boost your self-confidence and help you learn how to master your body and mind, which helps you deal with your

day-to-day life.”

You can burn on average 500 calories in one hour do-ing Capoeira. You also learn a new way of life, discover an intriguing culture and make life-long friendships.

CAPOEIRA IN SOUTH AFRICA There are several Capoeira schools throughout South Africa: Cape Town, Knysna, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria. For more contact Paulo 082 852 7401 or [email protected].
