A CONVENIENT BASENestling in the north-east corner of Kent, Canterbury is the perfect place

from which to explore the county, known as the Garden of England for its abundant produce, but equally famous for its appealing coastal towns,

exquisite gardens and historic houses.

Just 22 minutes’ drive away is the charming seaside town of Whitstable, the oyster capital of England. Further afield, Margate is famous for its beach and attractions and today draws art lovers to the Turner Contemporary Art gallery, while Dover is steeped in fascinating military and maritime history. The port of Folkestone is a great place for all-round family entertainment. Faversham is a charming and historic market town and is home to independent eateries, shops and a popular weekly market.

Inland, the Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where rolling hills afford spectacular views, run through the county from the Surrey border to Dover. Further south, the High Weald is a haven for walkers.

Many prominent figures from history lived in Kent – Winston Churchill, Charles Darwin and Vita Sackville-West, to name just three. Their grand homes and gardens are ‘must see’ attractions, as too are the ancient seats of the Boleyn family, Hever Castle, and Leeds Castle, where Henry VIII lived with the first of his six wives.

There was a settlement here in prehistoric times, but it was the Romans who developed the foundations of the walled city we see today. The cathedral, founded in 597AD, became the centre of the Christian church in England, and drew trade to the area – pottery, textiles and leather. At one time, Canterbury even had its own mint making gold coins.

Today, the city is a busy cosmopolitan centre, a university town and tourist hotspot. Its quaint medieval streets and buildings have a unique character and charm. They are a treasure-trove of fascinating boutique shops and independent traders, while the high street and Whitefriars shopping centre house all the big name brands. The city also has a wealth of lively bars, restaurants and cafés.

FRAMED BY HISTORYCanterbury is one of Britain’s oldest and most historically significant cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Canterbury residents can apply for a MyCanterbury card which offers free entry and discounts at hundreds of city attractions and places to eat, drink and shop.

Canterbury’s history is visible everywhere – the imposing cathedral, the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, a Norman castle, and the oldest school in the world, King’s School, founded in the 6th century. It is an exciting cultural centre, too, with a Roman museum, the fascinating and eclectic Beaney Museum, the Marlowe Theatre, and an annual arts and music festival that attracts renowned performers from around the world.
