We are delighted to present you with our new roster of stallions for 2017 and would like to

take this opportunity to thank all breeders for your interest and support.

2016 was a thrilling year for the Aga Khan Studs on the racecourse, thanks to the exploits

of dual Derby hero Harzand, and 2017 promises to offer an exciting breeding season as the

son of Sea The Stars joins his illustrious sire at Gilltown Stud.

Harzand undoubtedly provided the highlight of the season for the green and red silks,

becoming the 18th horse in history to record the Epsom and Irish Derby double, and a fi fth

for H.H. the Aga Khan, a record for an owner-breeder. This tough and classy performer is

by champion Sea The Stars, the third leading European sire who boasts an enviable ratio of

12% Stakes winners to runners from his fi rst four crops. Harzand represents an excellent

Aga Khan Studs family as the handsome individual is a son of Group III winner Hazariya, who

has already produced four Stakes performers. Harzand will be an attractive addition to the

Gilltown roster alongside both Sea The Stars and his promising younger brother Born To Sea.

In France, Dariyan was successful at the highest level when lifting the Prix Ganay in May.

Blue-blood runs through Dariyan’s veins as he is a son of the exceptional sire Shamardal

and of Group I winner Daryakana, a young mare whose fi rst two foals are already Stakes

winners. Her dam Daryaba had herself excelled on the racetrack when winning the

Prix Vermeille and Prix de Diane. Dariyan provides a fascinating opportunity for breeders

as he takes up stud duties at the Haras de Bonneval in Normandy, where he joins Classic

sire Siyouni, who enjoys growing success. The young sire, who started his career in 2011,

now counts ten Stakes winners and his daughters Ervedya, Volta and Spectre have been

consistent fl agbearers in Group Is throughout the year. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner

Sinndar will be standing at Haras du Lion as in 2016.

Recognised for the quality of their stallions, the Aga Khan Studs are also renowned for

their high-class maternal lines, which was illustrated once again in 2016 due to the

outstanding triple Group 1 winner Almanzor, who hails from the same family as Dariyan.

The victories of Vadamos in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp and of Mont Ormel in the

Classic Grand Prix de Paris further demonstrated the potential of the broodmares offered

for sale by the Aga Khan Studs.

HARZAND achieved a remarkable feat in winning both the blue ribbon of the turf, the Gr I Epsom Derby, and the Gr I Irish Derby this year. In doing so, he became only the 18th horse to complete this Derby double in 151 years and H.H. the Aga Khan’s fi fth dual Derby winner.

2016 was particularly successful for the graduates of the Aga Khan Studs. The fi llies and mares offered at the breeding stock sales produced the winners of no less than 30 Stakes races, including Europe’s leading three-year-old ALMANZOR. Talented Group I winners VADAMOS and MONT ORMEL were also bred out of mares purchased from the Aga Khan Studs and the success of dual Derby winner HARZAND, his dam Hazariya having been sold in 2014, further demonstrates the potential of the mares offered for sale.

Over the jumps, DAWALAN, who was bred by the Aga Khan Studs, was crowned Champion Steeplechase Horse at the Eclipse Awards in the USA. RAWNAQ, out of the Aga Khan bred mare Sharemata, won two Grade I races in 2016, including America’s richest Steeplechase, the US Grand National.
