SUCCESScan be defined in many ways. Ask 10 people what it means to themand you’ll probably get 10 different answers.

To some, success is determined by a company’s size or profits. But when you ask businessowners about their success, you rarely hear them talk about those things.

There are many variables to consider when gauging success, such as: achieving personal growth;realizing a dream; having pride in doing something you love; building a business from the groundup; being honest and truthful, and environmentally conscientious; and seeing your ideas and hardwork come to fruition. Many would also agree that having the right attitude is a necessary ingredientin the recipe for success.

Success doesn’t just happen. It requires time, talent and determination. And it’s not theculmination of hard work ending at a finish line. It’s an ongoing journey that requires continuousattention by a company or organization’s dedicated, hard-working staff. It’s more like a neverendingmarathon, because even if success is acquired, it must be maintained.

A successful company or organization is proud of and stands behind its product or service, aswell as its employees. It offers great customer service and it contributes to the community. In return,it receives admiration and respect from its clients and the community.

Boulder and Broomfield counties are filled with many thriving companies and organizationsthat have succeeded for many years. Read about many of them on the following pages.

Looking for an expert to help you transform your home from theground up? Come meet Leister Bowling. He not only owns Atlas

Flooring with his wife Nancy, he’s been working here since he was 15years old.

Atlas Flooring has everything you need to cover your floors – andsome walls and counters, too. The locally owned, independentlyoperated store houses hundreds of options in carpet, area rugs, ceramic tile, wood, stone, vinyl and laminate. Atlas Flooring is alsoone of our area’s premier sources for kitchen cabinets and granitecountertops. Atlas Flooring can provide a list of professional installerswho can bring your vision to life.

Established in 1958 by George and Fran Snyder, and laterpurchased by Loyd Deavenport in the late ’60s, Atlas Flooringquickly became a hot spot for Boulder County contractors, propertymanagers, Realtors and do-it-yourselfers alike. Over the next severaldecades, the company earned a reputation for high quality products, excellent customer service and bargain prices. Deavenport decided toretire in 2007 but wanted to leave his business in the right hands.Leister had been Deavenport’s protégé for many years and was eagerto take the helm.

“Since our business was already successful and 50 yearsestablished, our goals were to keep the same loyal employees, updatethe store’s appearance and keep our same low prices,” explains Leister.

Recently, the company has added cabinetry, which has quicklybecome a huge part of the business. This is due, in part, to thecompany’s winning formula: Beat any competitor’s pricing – oftenwith a much better product. Plus, with the quick, two-weekturnaround offered by Mastercraft cabinets, you can see whycustomers rely on Atlas time and time again.

Atlas also offers additional discounts to local interior designersand contractors.

Don’t know which material is the most suitable for your space?Looking for the best options a fixed budget will allow? Havesomething specific in mind but can’t find it? Speak to one of AtlasFlooring’s seasoned staff members for a tour of the showroom andpersonalized consultation. Still can’t locate exactly what you need?Custom orders are no problem.

Though Leister is the veteran flooring authority, he isn’t alone. The average length of employment at Atlas Flooring is 20 years.Employees are happy to be there and happy to help. “We don’t workon commission and want to be sure our customers are always takencare of and have a great experience,” says Leister. The difference incustomer service is conspicuous.

The prices at Atlas Flooring are none too shabby either. The storehas a huge inventory of stock tile, carpet and wood flooring that ispriced to move – typically 50 percent off regular price. If you can’tfind what you want in the close-out section, you can always wait forone of the store’s infamous sales. Every May and October, AtlasFlooring receives seasonal discounts from its vendors, and the storepasses these savings along directly to its customers. No gimmicks, nomark-ups, just honest-to-goodness deals.

At Atlas Flooring, shopping within a budget is a pleasure. “Ourmotivation is to keep our customers happy,” says Leister with a smile.“We pride ourselves on customer service and our ability to beat all ofour competitors’ prices.”

Since its humble beginnings in 1921, Art Cleaners has always made it its highestpriority to listen to customers’ needs and provide services with the utmost

attention to detail. With this philosophy in mind, owner and president BrianHansen has transformed a traditional cleaning service into a hi-tech, environmentallyconscious business that reflects many of the values of his community.

According to Hansen, a big part of adapting the business to modern needs isunderstanding the hectic lifestyles of customers and offering services that make theirlives easier. “People’s busy lifestyles have permitted Art Cleaners to offer free pick-upand delivery, to either home or office, and same-day service,” he says. Additionally,Art Cleaners proudly offers the environmentally safe Green Earth cleaning system, which is gentle on clothes, safe on skin and leaves no residual odor.

Whether cleaning clothes, removing stains, preserving bridal gowns, performing alterations or restoring water or smoke-damaged garments, ArtCleaners remains competitive by striving for the highest quality and service.

Hansen attributes his excellent staff for much of Art Cleaners’ success.“We do whatever we can to take care of our customers,” he says. “Our customersappreciate and enjoy their clothing, whether brand new or years old, and theywant each item to look like the day it was purchased. Clothing is an investment.”

Afavorite of outdoors enthusiasts, Play It Again Sports buys, sells andtrades new and quality-used sports equipment and fitness gear.

“We do everything: team sports, kids’ sports, lacrosse, soccer, hockey,” andof course, skiing, says founder Sue Stapleton. “We have customers who havebeen with us the whole 20 years. Families just keep recycling their sportsequipment. We take it if it’s in good condition and has the latest technology. And we give customers the opportunity to create their own discounts onpurchases, if they bring in what they’ve outgrown. We can find somebody whocan still use it. We work with the sports leagues in Boulder.”

Stapleton opened the business in April 17, 1990, and for the first 13 years sheran the business herself, and then sold it. In August 2009, she learned that the secondowner was about to close the store. Stapleton, who had survived earlier recessions, stepped in to save the business. She and her three new partners shut the doors forfive weeks, restocked, and reopened in October. “The community response to animminent closing was overwhelming. We’ve been doing incredibly well.”

These are the givens: Kids grow out of clothing, teens insist on namebrands, and grownups look for affordable prices. That is why Play It AgainSports is the sporting goods store for the whole family.

In 1960, when Boulder wasa small college town, Joe

and Betty Barnhill openedBarnhill Interiors, a carpetand drapery business. As theyears passed, the Barnhillsexpanded their vision toinclude an extensive selectionof fine home furnishings, lamps, fabrics, wall coveringsand accessories. They pavedthe way for what the store(now called Bartlett Interiors)has become today: a locallyowned and operated businesswith the largest library ofupholstery, drapery andspecialty fabrics in all ofBoulder County.

As a child, Jane Bartlett loved to sew and discover new fabrics. She spentcountless hours at the store with Betty’s daughter, an experience that exposed herto Betty’s work and fueled her interest in interior design. Sometimes, as a specialtreat, Betty gave Jane some of the leftover fabrics from the store, and Jane usedthem to make her clothes.

When Jane went to college, Barnhill Interiors was never far from her mind. After

graduating from CSU in 1975, Jane was hired as a designer. For the next 9 years sheapprenticed with them, and then had the opportunity to buy the business in 1984.Knowing that she would need some help, she enlisted her sister Nancy who “signedon” before the ink was dry on the sales contract, and they have never looked back.

Though times have changed – as has the name of the store – Jane and Nancy neverforget what they learned from Betty Barnhill all those years ago: relationships buildsuccessful businesses. Betty always had a lot of personal style and a gift for helpingothers make their homes into something special and beautiful. She invested in hercustomers and built long-term relationships with them.

Building long-term relationships with customers and striving to give excellentservice is a driving force behind the success of Bartlett Interiors. The showroom floordisplays a variety of fabrics and furniture styles to help customers visualize the use ofpattern and color in their homes. Jane and Nancy love to help customers create anenvironment that represents “home” to them.

They attribute the success of their 50-year history in Boulder to their customerswho have supported them all of these years. Boulder may no longer be a smallcollege town, but small-town values are still alive and well at Bartlett Interiors, wherethe goal is to provide personal service, attention to detail and quality home furnishings.

Verlo Mattress Factory Stores

Even as a youngster, Dick Sumerfield, owner of Boulder’s Verlo® MattressFactory, wanted to own his own business. He got his wish in 1989, when he

opened the first of his two local Verlo stores.“At Verlo Mattress, we make a bed just for you,” he explains. “All our beds

are custom-made here in our factory. You try out the beds in our showroom, andwe tailor your bed to your needs. We use only the highest quality, mosttechnologically advanced materials, and yet we sell our custom-crafted mattressesfor less than other mattress retailers.”

How does Verlo keep prices down? “We build what we sell – locally – so thecustomer saves! Our Craftsman-Direct® mattresses don’t sit in a warehouse or ona truck for weeks or months. They’re made one day before delivery. Customersspend less and sleep better on a mattress made just for them.”

No wonder Verlo has won the Boulder County Gold People’s Choice Awardfor 11 years in a row!

Sumerfield explains how he and his staff stay motivated and successful, evenduring these tough times. “Today, even more people look for value in what theypurchase. My staff and I know that we offer the best product at the best price.”

Since 1981 owners Gary and Debbie Chambers of Super Rupair, Inc., havebeen Boulder County’s Subaru gurus.“Our niche is ‘Subaru Only,’ and our customers are the ultimate reason

for our success,” Gary asserts. “Our customers have made us the largestindependent Subaru facility in the nation.”

Besides service and repair, they buy and sell more used Suburus, alongwith new, used and high-performance Suburu parts, than anyone else. Theirprices are competitive.

“I was attracted to owning my own shop because it was the best way toreceive a fair return for my hard work. As it turned out, the harder I workedthe more results I achieved,” says Gary.

The biggest challenge Gary and Debbie faced in 1981 is the same onethey face today – getting new customers to give Super Rupair a try. “Whenthey do, we prove that we’re the best shop,” Gary says with assurance.

Crist Mortuary has been serving the needs of the local bereaved for morethan 100 years. As Boulder’s only full-service funeral home, it provides

an on-site crematory and cemetery, and a chapel for celebration of lifeservices and memorial services. The exemplary staff, many of whom havebeen involved in the Boulder community for years, do everything they can toalleviate the burdens of a death in the family. They provide a myriad ofservices to help families with preplanning, arrangements and aftercare.

The Crist family sold the business to the Dignity Memorial network in1987. Though no longer locally owned, it is still locally managed, with anemphasis on maintaining community-based, individualized customer service.Crist Mortuary offers a variety of options, including a cremation garden andfamily mausoleum. Many more people are choosing cremation overtraditional burial, and as a whole, the process of laying loved ones to rest hasbecome far more personalized. For example, in lieu of traditional funeralservices, many are opting for more contemporary celebration-of-life services.

Four funeral directors with local connections lead Crist’s staff: For 20years Mark Hendriksen has been a funeral director in northern Colorado;Michael Greenwood is a lifelong resident of Boulder; Phyllis Medina hasbeen at Crist for about 10 years; and Michael Slater has been a funeraldirector in Boulder County for 15 years.

“We all accommodate the amount of personalization families want toinclude; for example, DVD showings or photo displays,” Hendriksen says.“Also, we can provide aftercare services for families to help them sort outtheir personal and financial matters, which can include contact with localattorneys to have legal questions answered. We have a toll-free ‘CompassionHelp Line’ for the immediate and extended family to call a professional griefcounselor. And we offer many choices of traditional or cremation services tohelp the family simplify the memorial service process.”

Several Crist services benefit the community; for example, civil servantswho perish in the line of duty and honorably discharged homeless U.S.veterans receive free services. Escape School is a safety program for kids, andthe Smart and Safe Seniors program helps older people avoid fraud. Crist isinvolved in the greater Boulder community in other ways, too; it proudlysponsors a North Boulder Little League team that’s coached by Hendriksen.

What helps make her company unique is that her trips are verypersonalized. “I am so blessed to have traveled to so many areas. I know manyof the local people when I return to an area. This makes my groups feel special.”

She is an expert in arranging trips for baby boomers, seniors and groupsof all ages. “We also do many wedding groups.”

Glen and Leah Taylor are quick to share the credit ofTaylor Moving’s success with their co-owners Scout,

George, Sky and Jake. No matter that these partners are of thecanine variety. They are as industrious as the rest of theexperienced staff, and lend a paw whenever they can. Like themorning one of the dogs got in the back of a truck while thecrew was loading supplies, curled up for a nap and woke up atthe moving site. “He stayed and amused the shipper’s kidsuntil lunch,” laughs Glen.

At Taylor Moving, every job is given personal attention andapproached with a family sensibility. Which is why the locallyowned and operated company keeps earning Boulder CountyGold awards year after year, a Best of Boulder prize and theloyalty of thousands of customers.

Glen started the business in 1996 after several years ofworking for other moving companies. “I realized I could gointo business for myself with my experience and put out abetter product than what was currently available,” he says. Heshared his vision with many of the top movers in town, promptly recruited them, and Taylor Moving was born.

It wasn’t easy. Glen held several other jobs while he wasbuilding a client base, and he worked long hours to convincehis first patrons to put their faith in an unknown company. He must have been pretty persuasive. These days TaylorMoving transports an average of 1,200 households andbusinesses every year, most of which are the result of repeatcustomers and referrals.

Taylor Moving serves the entire Front Range, from FortCollins to Denver, though most of its moves take place withinBoulder County. It is a year-round, full-service movingcompany, offering boxes and packing supplies, professionalpacking services, climate-controlled storage, customized longdistance moves and competitive prices that come with aguarantee. Free insurance is included in local moves, anduncompromising customer service comes standard with everymove, regardless of destination. “We are very hands-on and wealways make sure that our crews are personality matched toeach customer each day,” says Glen.

This is another example of a personal touch that puts TaylorMoving head and shoulders above its competition. Glen andLeah handpick a crew for every move based not only on thejob specifications but on customer compatibility as well. Sowhen the doorbell rings on moving day, clients areimmediately at ease, bolstered by the knowledge that everymover has a minimum of two years on-the-job experience, andmany have been on staff for significantly longer.

“We try to make the customer comfortable and make themoving process as simple as it can be by offering free advice, helpful tips and really putting out nice guys on every job,”explains Glen. And, with luck, some face time with the four-legged management team, too.

Helping in her grandmother’s lingerie store as a young girlinspired Barbra Wilson to open Christina’s, but her devotion to

making all women feel beautiful is what has made the boutique sucha success. “We like to cater to exactly what women want – whatmakes them feel good,” said Wilson.

When Wilson opened the Boulder store 31 years ago, shemodeled it after her grandmother’s and carried lingerie only. Over theyears, Wilson’s vision expanded as Boulder fashion progressed, andnow the boutique offers everything from chic lingerie and bathingsuits to everyday fashion and formal wear. She carries accessories aswell. Christina’s houses a wide range of designers, reaching to toplines such as Nicole Miller and Elie Tahari.

Even with such high-fashion brands, Wilson is still able toemphasize comfort with beauty. As the one and only buyer forChristina’s, she makes this a priority. “Boulder has evolved incrediblyin terms of fashion, but women still love feeling pure fabrics on theirskin. I like to choose items that are beautiful and fashionable, butalso soft and comfortable,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s expertise stretches far beyond her ability to evolve withthe trends. Her story began with Connie’s – her grandmother’slingerie store in New Jersey, which her mother, Elizabeth Meserole, has run for years now. Next, Wilson created Christina’s, which is

named after her daughter who was nine when the store opened. Yearslater, Wilson’s daughter, Christina LaBone-Brady, started her ownboutique in Berkeley, Cali., called Beauty and Attitude. “I realized Iwanted to open my own store when I found that the way my momdid things is the way it should be done,” LaBone-Brady said. “She isall about generosity and making people love lingerie and fashion.”

Beauty and Attitude marked the 4th generation of lingerie storesin Wilson’s family. All three stores are still open today. “Each of ourstores is slightly different, reflecting our different personalities,”Wilson said.

Outside of Barbra’s family of long-time lingerie experts is theChristina’s staff, which has become a family of its own. Many of thewomen on the staff have worked there more than 10 years; thecurrent staff includes Lynne Russell, Judy Foley, Ann McCauley,Kathy Sarbough, and Hannalove Wagner.

The devoted staff ensures that every customer receives specialattention – even those who are visiting the store seeking a simplestaple item. “I finally went [to Christina’s] per a friend’srecommendation – I loved it! The women there were extremelyhelpful without being pushy – I wanted to get a beige bra and theyhelped me find a really stylish one. It’s the best bra I own,” shared a26-year-old customer of her experience at Christina’s.

This is exactly what makes Christina’s a success; Wilson’s long-time passion for the trade is apparent to every customer. “It wasinevitable I would open my own store – it’s what I’ve always known, and I’ve always had so much fun with it. It’s the most fun a girl canhave and still call it a job.”

Christine Hubbard, co-owner and general manager of BoulderHydroponic & Organic Center, became interested in the field

when she was a little girl and saw hydroponics in action at the St.Louis Zoo. Now she serves as president of the Progressive GardeningTrade Association for the United States and Canada. Her personaljourney is analogous to the hydroponic industry itself – organicbeginnings, thriving results.

“I immediately saw the importance of what we were doing and howthis type of growing could help the planet,” explains Hubbard, describing her first foray into professional hydroponics. “This was thefuture of growing food and saving resources. I just saw it andmarveled at the beauty of it all.”

Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants in a nutrient solutioninstead of soil. Why are so many people, Hubbard included, captivated by it? Hydroponics can be employed with virtually anyplant in nearly any location. With the proper supplies, people cansuccessfully grow fresh fruits, vegetables and other flora whether theylive – on a large plot of land or in a studio apartment. Hydroponicgardens produce a greater yield as well as more consistent crops, whilesimultaneously requiring less space, resources and work. Hydroponicgrowing can produce up to 10 times more food while using one-tenththe water of conventional gardening methods.

That Hubbard’s path, like so many local hydroponic enthusiasts’,led her to the Boulder Hydroponic & Organic Center seems onlyfitting since it is the premier hydroponic store in Colorado. Afternearly 18 years in the industry, including starting and selling asuccessful small business in Englewood (Mrs. Greenjeans Hydroponics),Hubbard came to work for Boulder Hydroponic & Organic Center in2002. She has since formed a partnership to build the business, whichincluded adding the Denver Hydroponic & Organic Center to thefold in 2005.

“Ed really built this business right,” enthuses Hubbard. “Slow andsteady and on a great foundation of having products at fair prices, always putting the customer first and spending the time each personneeds to be taught how to accomplish their goals.”

Indeed, Boulder Hydroponic & Organic Center has 6,000 squarefeet stocked to the gills with everything needed to create hospitablegrowing environments for plants. The locally owned and operatedstore – since 1995 – sells fully loaded garden kits as well as do-it-yourself garden-building components. The store carries products tocontrol climate as well as natural and non-poisonous pest controlproducts. In support of Earth Friendly and Sustainable gardening, the store provides the Organic Gardener with a full array of organicsoils and fertilizers; soilless and hydroponic options; nutrients, lighting systems, propagation products and growing accessories. Bestof all, Boulder Hydroponic & Organic Center employs friendly, knowledgeable staff who hold degrees in everything from biology tobotany to horticulture.

“This is why Boulder Hydroponic & Organic Center has been inbusiness longer than any other hydroponic store in Colorado; and votedBest of Boulder for six years,” says Hubbard. “We have been growingour business (pun intended) to be even more successful in the future.”

For Clarence Harrison, “success” is what he feels when he sees his clientsgetting their first look at the new artisan wood floor he has just installed

in their home. “I love what I do and I believe my enthusiasm is part of thissuccess,” he says. “The positive feedback that I get on every one of my jobsis what keeps me motivated.” Harrison, owner of WoodWise HardwoodFloors in Boulder, has been installing and refinishing Front Range floors formore than 20 years.

“Our expertise ensures that your floor will be created to complementyour home’s existing materials and site requirements. The best wood floorsare designed and installed by a professional craftsman, who can advise youon the best materials, finishes and methods to create a masterpiece floor thatwill last for decades. I offer unparalleled service at hard-to-beat prices.”

It’s fair to measure success in terms of the challenges that have beenovercome. “In 1988, when I opened my first wood flooring business, I wascoming into a market where I was unknown and I was competing againstestablished businesses,” Harrison recalls. “But my experience as anapprentice told me that, with my commitment and attention to detail, Icould provide a better service. I was motivated to be my own boss, and toshowcase what I do better than anyone else.” Harrison’s installation“portfolio” even includes a 60,000-square-foot athletic gym.

A longtime dedicated runner, Harrison sees parallels between hiscompetitive running and running a successful business. Every trail isdifferent, and understanding the course is key to an excellent run. Similarly,Harrison says, no two floors are exactly alike. “This makes planning thedetails very important. I pay meticulous attention to each step of everyproject,” he says. “I am personally on each job, every day, to make sureeverything is being done correctly and to our standards. A WoodWise flooris second to none.” The company also provides refinishing, floor restorationand repairs on water- or sun-damaged areas.

Your home’s interior environment benefits in two important ways whenWoodWise is your floor contractor. Adding a wood floor creates a lot ofdust and sawdust, and most contractors charge hundreds more for “dustless”installation. “Every one of our projects are dust-free, and at no extracharge,” Harrison says. “You don’t want all the dust in your air, or gatheringin the nooks and crannies, or even in the duct work. As a serious runner, Idon’t want that stuff in my lungs – or yours!”

Finishing the wood is another area where WoodWise works to reducethe environmental impact. Few wood finishes are truly environmentallyfriendly, and the solvents used in most products can give off toxic fumes formonths after application. “Natural oils look great, but they don’t hold up,”Harrison explains. “For most applications, water-based finishes are the bestway to go. These products have really improved in terms of ease ofapplication and durability, and there is no off-gassing of any toxic ingredients.”

WoodWise customers appreciate the follow-up they receive, too –whether their home is an entry-level townhome or a multi-million-dollarshowcase. “We always do a walk-through with the homeowner, to see if theyhave any questions, discuss upkeep and maintenance, and ensure that theirnew floor matches their desire and expectation.”

“We are happy to visit your home, consult with you on your project andprovide a free, no-obligation estimate. We’ll bring our showroom to you, with hundreds of samples to choose from. Just give us a call – we’d love towork with you in creating the floor of your dreams,” Clarence Harrison says.

Here’s a new direction for IRA and 401k investing: expand and diversify yourportfolio with real estate, private stock, gold, LLCs, lending and more. Catherine

Wynne and Bill Humphrey started offering self-directed retirement plan services whenthey sat down and read the IRS code on IRA investments, and now offer clients accessto these unique diversification opportunities.

Real estate had been a successful investment for them in the past, but theywere told their retirement plans (IRAs) could only buy securities, not real estate.“Our stock broker/financial advisors said that this couldn’t be done, so we startedresearching why only securities were purchased in IRAs.” That research opened thedoor for them to untapped investment possibilities, and they started their business.

“The biggest challenge in our business was overcoming the security industrymomentum with IRAs only being invested in stocks. Our company is uniquebecause we provide education and guidance through sometimes complextransactions. Entrust New Direction IRA has made client education a top prioritythrough classes, articles, and presentations.”

Their business has grown continuously in spite of the troubled economy.Entrust New Direction IRA just crossed the 4,000 client threshold and administersover $300 million in assets. “Our motivation comes from spreading the word thatsecurities are not the only game in town for IRAs.”

Most of us take our appliances – those trusty machines that wash ourdishes, dry our clothes and cook our dinner – for granted. But when

we need a new dishwasher, clothes dryer or stove, we really appreciate anappliance store with a friendly and knowledgeable sales staff that can answerall the hard questions and help us find the right gadget at a great price.

For the most choices, expert service and value, the place to go isMountain High Appliance. “We offer everything from ultra-high-endappliance packages to replacement microwaves, vacuum cleaners and waterfilters,” says Brad Barnett, president. “And we treat you with courtesy, werespect your time, and we keep our word.”

This combination of great products and a caring, personable staff hasbeen the formula for success for Mountain High Appliance since it openedits doors in 1993. Locally owned and operated, Mountain High Appliance isColorado’s most complete appliance source, offering Colorado’s bestselection of today’s most desirable brands, a knowledgeable staff and state-of-the-art showrooms featuring live kitchens and brand names such Dacor,Miele, Asko, Viking, KitchenAid, Sub Zero, Wolf, Bosch, GE, Frigidaireand many more. Full-time delivery and installation teams ensure that yournew stove, washer, refrigerator or dryer arrives in perfect condition and iscorrectly installed and functioning.

Like most good success stories, this one starts out with humblebeginnings. “I started out delivering appliances for a large store in Boulder,”Barnett recalls, and moved into sales and management. But that didn’t reallymeet my expectations. At age 25, it became apparent that starting my ownbusiness was the only way to take charge of my own destiny. With just $5,000in the bank, I started buying and servicing used appliances in my garage – anddeliveries were done with an old truck without so much as a lift gate!

“I knew that my vendors were going to be my lifeblood to having anexpanded product offering. A very special sales representative for Viking hadfaith in me and pushed to open me up as a dealer. My entry into the high-end appliance market was on its way!”

With hard work and the right mix of products, Barnett’s fledglingbusiness grew from its original workshop space to today’s 12,000-square-foot showroom, featuring more brands for side-by-side comparison than anyother store in the region. “We believe in pricing our merchandisecompetitively without compromising our tradition of excellent service andknowledge. That’s how we have built our reputation.”

The company’s reputation also extends into the community. “Weestablished the Mountain High Appliance Good Neighbor Fund, wheredonations from participants of our many events are given back to thecommunity, whether we’re supporting Centaurus High School, the BoulderShelter for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity or other deservingcommunity organizations. We feel we are part of these organizations andthey are now an integral part of our doing business,” Barnett explains.

Barnett says that Mountain High Appliance’s competitive advantage istheir legendary Hassle-Free Service. “We meet or beat our competition, eventhe big-box stores. We provide complete service, from state-wide deliveryand installation to classes on how to use and care for your appliance. We cananswer your troubleshooting questions for any warranty situation. We hostmonthly events in our seven live showcase kitchens that let customersexperience and operate appliances before they buy.”

Along the way, the staff manages to make the work fun. “I find thatwhen people work hard, they also want to play hard,” Barnett says with alaugh. “We have a family-like atmosphere, with a team spirit of camaraderie.”

When all is said and done, Barnett says that his passion for the businessis what keeps him motivated to achieve a little more, each day. “We’rehelping customers enhance their homes with great appliances. It’s really allabout the Golden Rule. I personally invite you to come on by and see us –you’ll be glad you did.”

Five years ago a group of entrepreneurs started a revolution in Colorado’sdry-cleaning industry. They launched Revolution Cleaners, the only

CO2 dry cleaner in Colorado and one of a handful in the country. Fiveyears later, they can boast about having six stores in the Denver area, twomore in Boulder County, and more coming. Along the way they have alsogiven the environment a helping hand.

Revolution Cleaners is unique because its cleaning process usesrecaptured, liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) – the same agent that humansbreathe out and plants breathe in. Traditional dry cleaning uses the toxicchemical perchloroethylene (PERC), which is harmful for the environmentand for human beings. Most dry cleaners use PERC to clean clothes. TheEPA lists it as a probable carcinogen, and it is a known pollutant.

The CO2 that Revolution Cleaners uses reduces the greater carbonfootprint, since it is a byproduct of other industrial processes – like oilrefining, ammonia production and fermentation of wine and beer. Bycapturing the CO2, Revolution utilizes exhaust that would otherwise bereleased into the atmosphere and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

In conjunction with the dry cleaning, Revolution utilizes a state-of-the-art Miele wet-cleaning system. These machines conserve energy and waterresources during their highly efficient cycles.

Oddly enough, the business was conceived at Proto’s on Platte Street inDenver over pizza and beer. To the entrepreneurs, it seemed like a goodopportunity to improve an antiquated industry. CO2 dry cleaning was newtechnology and not well known. The biggest challenge the owners faced inopening the business was that they had to figure it out for themselves. Therewas very little help to be had.

The concept showed such promise, it attracted the private equity firmRMR Capital to invest a substantial sum of money for future growth.“RMR Capital saw the potential Revolution Cleaners had to change thedry-cleaning business,” says Edward Pizzarello of RMR. “Our long-termstrategy involves strategic growth through corporate expansion, franchising /licensing opportunities and acquisitions.”

Revolution’s target customer is a consumer who wants consistent, impeccable customer service and a cleaning process that is revolutionary.Traditionally, dry cleaning has been seen as a low-priority commoditychosen for convenience and price. Revolution Cleaners is changing thatperception. They provide the most advanced, environmentally friendly dry-cleaning technology, in a pristine retail environment, with friendly, highly-

trained and knowledgeable employees.“We believe that our customer service is the fundamental reason we’ve

retained loyal customers and continue to grow in the face of a recession. After opening our Louisville store in February, and with at least two morelocations in the works, it is easy to stay energized and motivated,” theowners say.

Benefiting the EnvironmentRevolution Cleaners is Colorado’s environmentally friendly cleaner,

using non-toxic technologies. The company employs wind power to runtheir plant. Their fleet consists of Hybrids and other alternative-fuelvehicles that use ethanol or biodiesel. Revolution offers free pickup anddelivery service to most of Denver, Boulder and the surrounding areasusing these environmentally friendly vehicles. Whenever possible, theiruniforms and laundry bags are made from organic cotton. In their storesthey use such renewable resources as bamboo hardwoods, cork flooring andreclaimed particleboard. They provide a clean, safe and comfortableworkplace. “Better for our people and better for our business.”

Revolutionary TechnologyRevolution’s dry-cleaning process uses naturally occurring and reclaimed

CO2 as the cleaning solution. Under pressure, CO2 becomes an odorless,non-toxic liquid with unparalleled cleaning characteristics. It’s non-hazardous and non-flammable. It dissolves stains as well or better than thetoxic substances other cleaners use. It naturally cleans delicate fabrics such asleather, down, silk, beads, sequins, wool, Spandex and nylon. Plus, no heatis involved in the process, so clothes last longer and feel softer. In addition, without heat, stains aren’t set, and stain removal is still possible aftertreatment. For certain water-soluble stains and fabrics, Revolution uses thehigh-tech Miele wet-cleaning system. Best of all, clothes don’t have thatchemical dry-cleaning smell.

According to Revolution, “It’s better for your clothes, better for the earthand it’s just as affordable as traditional full-service cleaning – without thenasty chemicals and fumes. Consumer studies rate CO2 as the best dry-cleaning method on the market.”
