4 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/September, 1978 NHPA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

By Wally Shipley CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE 1978 WORLD TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS IN

ALL DIVISIONS. For the first time in the past five years, we were blessed with beautiful weather, with only a scant rain during the early morning hours of one day.

We again had a record breaking turnout, there being 787 qualifiers. Last year's record was 614. It took the help of many people to qualify and complete the tournament play of so large a group. My thanks to all who were involved—qualifiers, scorekeepers, judges, groundskeepers and office help in producing a smooth running World Tournament.

A special thanks to Donnie Roberts and his staff for their outstanding efforts and for the many improvements over 1977. Also to the entire membership of the Des Moines club and the Iowa Hawkeye Association for hosting the tournament. Especially to Danny Sease, Marion Lange and Woody Wilson and a host of others for their help. Also to the 147 delegates out of a possible 196 who were present to make the convention a success.

Some of the convention highlights were: 1. All the proposed Constitution and By-Laws changes were passed. One change was amended and passed to increase the News Digest Editor's allowance from the proposed $700.00 to $900.00. 2. The delegates voted to cancel the Goldstein contract IF he does not come up with some thing concrete and a firm contract that is ACCEPTABLE to the NHPA Executive Council by January 1, 1979. 3. The land and building fund proposals as suggested were tabled until such time as the NHPA is financially able and want to continue down this avenue. 4. Two fantastic bids were received and presented to the delegates for the 1980 World Tournament. Huntsville, Alabama presented a bid of $15,000.00 which was the winner over Genols, Minnesota whose bid was $10,000.00. Our thanks to both areas for their desire to hold a World Tournament. 5. Special awards went to the Ohio State association for the most members in the past year (324). Also to Pete Shepard of Massachusetts for his many years as New England Regional Director. To Dorothy Pinch of Sharon, Pennsylvania for her many years serving as an NHPA Vice-President. A check for $100.00 was presented by the NHPA to the Des Moines Club's favorite charity, the American Red Cross. 6. Election of officers—Donnie Roberts was re-elected Secretary-Treasurer without op-position; John Rademacher won over Russ Gadoury and Jim McCombs on the second ballot for the office of 2nd Vice-President. Bonnie Siebold won over Ann Domey for the 4th Vice-President spot. I will look forward to working with the Council, Staff, Commit-tees and the entire membership during the coming year.

Meetings were held with the Hall of Fame Committee, Regional Directors Publicity Com-mittee with state secretaries present for the first time. Much interest was shown and many ideas expressed. Minutes of these meetings will be published at a later date. Thanks to all who were present.

I appointed Russ Gadoury of Massachusetts as assistant to Donnie Roberts to help him take care of the NHPA and State Sanctioned Leagues and clubs programs. Ray Williams accepted appointment as NHPA Youth chairman. Both were approved by the Council. Bob Booe of 1211 Guthrie Circle, Atchinson, Kansas 66002 accepted the appointment as Regional Director of Kansas and Missouri to replace Charles Kilgore who asked to be replaced. Earl Winston, pres. of Missouri and Bill Chester, secretary, both approved as did the Council. His phone number is 913-367-3309.

1978 Achievement Awards were presented to the following: George Neff, Ohio; Danny Sease, Iowa; Woody Wilson, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Burns, Iowa; Ralph Dykes, Illinois and Harry Schmidt of New Jersey. Donnie Roberts received the annual Arch Stokes award for meritorious service to the sport of horseshoes.

Congratulations to all. We in the NHPA deeply appreciate your efforts, co-operation and support in your various fields of endeavor.

Many nice complements were received as to the conduct of the Convention and how well the

With all the help and support as shown in the 1978 World Tournament, and continued thru 1978 and 1979, the World Tour-nament and convention at Statesville, North Carolina should be a tremendous success.

SPECIAL SHOE AUTHORIZED BY NHPA OFFICERS

The NHPA Executive Council met on July 29, 1978 and voted unanimously to authorize Walter Ross of Iowa to pitch in any NHPA sanctioned horseshoe event with a special shoe designed especially for him. The special show was designed for him because of a missing thumb on his pitching hand.

The decision applies only to his horseshoes and doesn's permit any other shoe which fails to meet NHPA specifications.

The pitcher involved is Walter Ross, Route 2, Boone, Iowa 50036. Donnie Roberts

NHPA Secretary-Treas.

DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY IN ASSEMBLING THE VAST AMOUNT OF MATERIAL RELATING TO THE 1978 WORLD TOURNAMENT, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE OF THE DIGEST IS UNAVOIDABLY DELAYED.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/September, 1978 NEW FREEDOM, PA. OPEN WON BY JOE SCHULTZ

There was a very good lineup for the New Freedom Open with Joe Schuitz and New York State Champion, Art Tyson on hand. Meet was held in New Freedom, Pa.

The weather intervened with Classes A and C having to pitch in doors. Several pitchers notably Art Tyson and Dan Beshore were severely hampered by our low 10ft. ceiling.

Horseshoe pitchers must be the best sports in the world, because they didn't complain and all agreed this was better than cancelling.

Nothing bothered Joe as he pitched steady horse shoes all afternoon being defeated by only one man, Dale Carson thus causing a tie with grant powers.

DRURY WINS STEINFELDT HANDICAP AT CLEARWATER, FLA.

Lured by free hot dogs and beverage, as well as a wide range of prizes, 54 players stormed the Clearwater courts for a fun day and pitching in the first annual Carl Steinfeldt Handicap Tournament. Each player received a 100% handicap based on his current ringer average. Players were placed in mixed 6-man round robin groups regardless of ringer average, generally consisting of a 60% pitcher, 50% pitcher, 40% pitcher, etc. Play was limited to 50 shoes per game with alternate pitch. Only ringers were counted in the scoring with a value of 1 point for each ringer. The winner of a game was awarded 2 points, while in a tie game situation each player was awarded one point. Points so earned were accumulated to determine the group win-ner. Three groups were assigned to a division with a playoff between group winners in each division.

Of the 9 groups, only two of the top pitchers in a group were able to finish at the top of their group. The tournament champion was determined by totaling a player's score for 5 round robin games plus his playoff game. This method produced Ken Drury of Sarnia, Ontario and Large, Fla. as tournament champion with 323 points and Joe West of Haines City, Fla. as run-ner up with 322 points. Prize list included a unique plaque designed by Clearwater Club member, Bob Widdersheim; American horseshoes; subscriptions to the National Digest; State memberships, NHPA shirts and visors. The enthusiasm of the players for this type of tourna-ment (as well as the wives who cooked and served the players) prompted a decision to make it an annual event.

Earle Morris, top pitcher from Lakeland, Fla. was winner of a novelty attraction which con-sisted of pitching 5 mongrel shoes acquired from a local stable plus 2 shoes welded together at the toe. Pitching distance was 30 ft. Earle topped the field with 2 ringers.

RUSS GADOURY APPOINTED NHPA LEAGUE COORDINATOR To all league Directors, state officers, and interested persons: At Donnie Roberts' suggestion the NHPA Executive Council has appointed me to serve as

NHPA League Coordinator. The purpose of this appointment is to relieve Donnie Roberts of a portion of his tremendous work load. As league Coordinator, I will be handling most of the paperwork and correspondence associated with sanctined leagues. Briefly, I will have the following duties.

1. Receive and reply to all correspondence related to leagues. 2. Accept requests for league sanction, send and receive membership reports, distribute

forms, etc. 3. Send league directors the appropriate awards. 4. Forward to Donnie Roberts whatever he needs for his records. It will be Donnie's responsibility to obtain the necessary supplies such as pre-printed forms,

membership cards, awards, etc., and to distribute checks at the end of the year for state and club dues included in the cost of league cards.

A more detailed explanation of reporting procedures will be furnished to league directors and others who ask for it.

At present over 800 league pitchers in eight states are participating in the league sanction program. One league has 175 members. Donnie said that within a week of receiving the report from that league he bagan receiving Digest subscriptions. This is most heartening in terms of future growth for the NHPA. If your league has not yet decided to obtain a sanction, please give it serious consideration for next year or this winter.

In answer to some questions already received, the procurement of awards is nearing comple-tion. The design of many of them has been completed. Several are already on order. There might be delays in getting out some of the awards in time for your league's season-ending get together this year only. Please bear with us. We'll be in full swing shortly.

To the question, "How will league sanctioning affect the way we run our league?" the answer is, "Not at all. Run you league anyway you like." The program is flexible enough to ac-comodate any method of play.

I look forward to serving you as League Coordinator. Please address your correspondence to: RUSSELL GADOURY, NHPA League Coordinator, 44 Edward Rd., Watertown, MA 02172. (617) 924-8068.
