Two Source Automatic Transfer System
ASCO two-source systems are designed for automatic switching ofloads between the utility source and an alternate source of power.Upon the loss of the utility power source, the system provides anautomatic start signal to the alternate source of power. Once thealternate source has reached proper voltage and frequency, thesystem transfers the critical load from the utility source to thealternate power source. When normal power is restored the controlswill retransfer the load to the utility and signal shutdown of thealternate power source after allowing a cooldown period.
ASCO two-source systems include an automatic transfer switch,plus any or all of the following options; automatic engine startingcontrols, overcurrent protection for both emergency and normalsources, instrument meters, status annunciation, and audible alarm.The systems are designed to NEMA switchboard construction andare labeled to UL 891 standards.
These systems can be designed for top cable entrance, bottom cableentrance or bus duct connections.
The system shown in figure 7 contains a 1200 ampere closedtransition automatic transfer switch with a 1200 ampere utilitycircuit breaker, multi-purpose meter, reverse power relay, and analarm horn.

Three Source Automatic Transfer System
ASCO three-source systems are similar to ASCO two-source systems except that a second alternate powersource is added to back up the first if that power sourcefails. Upon the loss of the utility power source, thesystem provides all necessary controls to start bothalternate power sources. The critical loads areautomatically transferred to the first alternate powersource that achieves acceptable voltage and frequency.The second alternate power source is then automatical-ly shutdown after a time delay and cooldown period. Ifthe first alternate power source fails, the secondalternative power source will be automaticallyre-started and the load will be transferred from the firstalternative power source to the second alternative powersource. When the normal power is restored, thecontrols automatically retransfer the load to the utilitypower source.
Figure 9 shows a three source automatic transfer systemwith two 940 automatic transfer switches and threedistribution circuit breakers for feeding critical loads.
Product Features
• Control logic for selecting between the alternativepower sources.
• Normal, emergency, and/or load circuit breakers.
• Protective relaying (as required).
• Optional instrument meters for normal, emergency, orload for local monitoring.
• Designs are based on NEMA and UL 891 standards.

Three Source Priority System
ASCO three-source priority systems are similar to the ASCO three-source systems except they protect two criticalloads rather than one critical load. Upon the loss of the utility power source, the system provides all necessarycontrols to start both alternative power sources. The most critical load is transferred to the first alternate powersource that achieves acceptable voltage and frequency. The second most critical load is then transferred to thesecond alternate power source when it achieves acceptable voltage and frequency. If the alternate power sourcefeeding the most critical load should fail, the most critical load would be transferred to the second alternate powersource and the second most critical load would be shed. When the utility power source is restored, the systemcontrols automatically retransfer the loads to the utility and both alternate power sources are run for a cooldownperiod and then shutdown.
Figure 11 shows a three source priority system containing a priority selector transfer switch (ATS-2) and sevendistribution circuit breakers. ATS-1 and ATS-2 are wall mounted automatic transfer switches and are not shown inthis line-up.

Soft Load Transfer SystemASCO soft load closed transition transfer switches provide a make-before-break transfer of a building load from a utility power source to an alternatepower source. This system automatically brings the engine generator intosynchronism with the utility source, then gradually shifts the load from theutility to the engine generator with virtually no voltage or frequencyfluctuations.

Custom Applications
Selective load systems allow one load at a time to be operatedwhen normal power fails. The system uses the minimum amountof auxiliary power for operation so the alternate power source canbe sized for only one load at a time. The selective load system canbe designed to handle any number of loads in any combination ofsizes to suit the customers needs.
The only interfacing between the ASCO selective load system andthe load controls are power cables.
The system can be used with any electrical load application whereonly one load out of a number of loads are to be operated from thealternate power source at one time. A typical application is withmultiple banks of elevators when you want to enable only oneelevator at a time to operate under emergency conditions.
The system can be supplied with a separate control panel, whichallows loads to be selected from a remote location.
Figure 15 shows a typical selective load system with transferswitches for five loads. The control panel has a selector switchand position indication of each load.

Final standards for stationary and nonroaddiesel generator sets
On July 11, 2006, the US EPA fi nalized its proposalto regulate emissions from stationary dieselcompression-ignition engines. Called the “NewSource Performance Standards,” the EPA rulerequires emissions from stationary diesel-poweredgenerator sets to be harmonized with nonroad(mobile) applications starting from January 1, 2007.
As a result of the rule:
> Generators with engine ratings of 10-99 hp must comply with Tier 2 regulations;
> Generators with engine ratings of 100-751 hp must comply with Tier 3 regulations;
> Generators with engine ratings of 752-3000 hp must comply with Tier 2 regulations;
> Engines that are not certifi ed to 2007 nonroad standards must be installed by the end-user by January 1, 2009.
Key exceptions are:
> Stationary engines over 3000 hp will remain at Tier 1 until their Tier 4 requirements become effective in 2011.
> Beginning in 2011 at Tier 4, emergency stationary diesel generators will not have to advance to standards that require aftertreatment.
U.S. EPA emissions regulations for on-site power generation
Proposed regulations for spark-ignited gasengines
On June 12, 2006, the EPA proposed new rules toregulate emissions from stationary spark-ignited gasengines. The fi rst regulation will become effectiveJuly 1, 2007, when emissions levels for stationarynon-emergency engines (typically used in peaking and landfi ll gas) and engines below 25 hp will be regulated. Spark-ignited gas engines above 25 hp used in stationary emergency applications will require EPA certifi cation effective January 1, 2009.
Cummins Power Generation intends to offer EPA-certifi ed gas products to meet the EPA stationaryemergency requirements for spark-ignited gas. Please consult your Cummins Power Generation dealer or visit www.cumminspower.com for a list of our EPA-compliant gas generator sets.
Award-winning diesel technology
Frost & Sullivan named Cummins Power Generation the recipient of the 2006 North American Diesel Engine Technology Leadership of the Year Award. The award recognizes Cummins Power Generation’s advancements and market leadership in emissions technology.

EPA Certifi cation Levels:
“As a recognized industry leader, Cummins Power Generation hasbeen working closely with the EPA and supports their efforts tostrengthen emissions regulations for nonroad and stationary dieselengines. Cummins Pow er Generation was the fi rst manufacturer tooffer EPA-certifi ed Tier 3 generator sets.
“Cummins Power Generation’s design strategy for meetingnew emissions standards has been to focus on our existingelectronic-controlled engine platforms and new in-cylinder design
enhancements. We believe this has been the best approach tohigher performance, better fuel effi ciency and high reliability thandesigns that rely on costly exhaust aftertreatments. This designstrategy has helped us become one of the few manufacturers whocan offer the marketplace a full line of EPA-certifi ed products.”
