the event surrounding the battle of Tabuk. One such person who did

not want to go along with the Holy Prophet for the battle of Tabuk

was Judd Bin Qais. He made the excuse that due to women he might

be tried, therefore, he should be excused from taking part in this

battle. The Holy Prophet accepted his excuse. Soon thereafter the

    following verse of the Holy Qur’an was revealed;

me not to trial.’ Surely, they have already fallen into trial. And surely,

Hell shall encompass the disbelievers.” [Surah Taubah: Verse 49]

There was a jewish man in Medina by the name of Surailam. He was

based in the quarters known as Jasum. The house of this man was

the meeting place for the hypocrites. The Holy Prophet received the

news that the hypocrites are gathering in this house and are

discouraging people to embark on the journey for Tabuk. Holy

Prophet dispatched Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir. When Hazrat Ammar

bin Yasir confronted them, they came to the Holy Prophet and

started making various excuses. Allah the Almighty has mentioned

    this in the Holy Qur’an as well in the following words;

“The hypocrites fear lest a Surah should be revealed against them,

informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, ‘Mock ye! surely, Allah

will bring to light what you fear.’

And if thou question them, they will most surely say, ‘We were only

talking idly and jesting.’ Say, ‘Was it Allah and His Signs and His

    Messenger that you mocked at?

‘Offer no excuse. You have certainly disbelieved after your believing. If

We forgive a party from among you, a party shall We punish, for they

have been guilty.’” [Surah Taubah: Verse 64-66]

These were the circumstances where some people were making

excuses not to go while some others conspired so that others may

also stay behind. On the other hand, while returning from the battle

of Tabuk, the Holy Prophet commented that there were some people

who were in medina but at the same time they accompanied you

during this journey wherever you went. The companions asked,

‘how is it possible that they stayed in Medina but were still with us?’.

The Holy Prophet replied, that although these men stayed behind in

Medina, but they did so because of a legitimate reason or due to

some sickness due to which they were not able to go along with you

despite their desire to accompany you. This is why Allah has placed

them with you on this journey despite their physical absence.

At one point, the Holy Prophet mentioned that i am returning early.

Therefore, anyone of you who would like to accompany me, may

choose to do so, and whosoever wants to stay a little longer may

choose to do so. The companions left with the Holy Prophet until

they started to see the city of medina on the horizon. Upon seeing

this, the Holy Prophet mentioned that ‘this is Taabah, which means

pure and pleasing’. Then Holy Prophet mentioned pointing towards

the mountain that ‘this is Uhud, it loves us and we love it. Among the

houses of Ansaar, the best ones belong to Banu Najjar, then the second

best ones belong to Banu Ash’ar, then Banu Haris Bin Khazraj, then

Banu Sa’idah, until the Holy Prophet deemed all the houses of Ansaar

    as good.’

Upon the return of the Holy Prophet from the battle of Tabuk, the

people of Medina had gathered at the place of Thaniatul Wada’ to

welcome the Holy Prophet and the Muslim troops.

Huzoor e Anwar further stated that the practice of the Holy Prophet

was to first enter the mosque and offer two rak’at nafal salat. He

entered the mosque soon after the sunrise and did just that. After

salat, Holy Prophet stayed behind in the masjid to meet with people

and at this point all those who had stayed behind came forward and

presented various excuses for their staying behind. The number of

such people was 80. The Holy Prophet despite knowing that these

people are making false excuses, still accepted their excuses and

    retook their bai’ats.

There were three companions who stayed behind but not because of

any hypocrisy and did not have any legitimate excuse for it but did

not lie and spoke the truth to the Holy Prophet. At this, these three

companions were boycotted for 40 days and were eventually

forgiven by Allah the Almighty and are mentioned in the Holy

Qur’an. One of these three were Hazrat Murara Bin Rabi’ Amri who

belonged to the Ansaar tribe of Aus and to the sub clan of Banu Amr

Bin Auf. He was present in the battle of Badr but was not able to

partake in the battle of Tabuk.

Another Badri companion of the Holy Prophet was Hazrat Utbah Bin

Ghazwan. He was among the earliest companions of the Holy

Prophet and when he migrated to Abyssinia he was 40 years of age.

He ultimately came back to Mecca and then migrated to medina

along with Hazrat Miqdad Bin Aswad. Huzoor e Anwar mentioned

the details of their migration to Medina and shared how these two

companions left with the army of the Quraish only to meet up with

the Muslims. Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Bashir Ahmad sahib in his

book Seerat Khatamun Nabiyyeen has stated that the very first verse

regarding the jihad of the sword that was revealed to the Holy

Prophet was revealed in the month of Safar in the 2nd year of hijrah.

The Holy Prophet, soon after migration to Medina, adopted 4 ways

to ensure the safety of the Muslims. Firstly, the Holy Prophet himself

travelled to the neighboring tribes and established pacts of peace

with them. Holy Prophet specially focused on those tribes first that

were situated along the route that the Quraish would take on their

way to Syria. These were the tribes that Quraish could easily encite

against Muslims. Secondly, the Holy Prophet would send small

contingents comprising of sahaba around Medina and close to Mecca

to inquire about various activities of the Quraish so that the Muslims

are not overwhelmed by a surprise attack from the Quraish. Thirdly,

by sending these small contingents, the weak Muslims from the

surrounding areas were given the opportunity to join ranks with

their fellow Muslims by moving to Medina. The very first contingent

of Sahaba that went out, had to face some of the Meccans among

whom two Muslims named Miqdad Bin Aswar and Utbah Bin

Ghazwan were hiding and quickly joined the Muslims and thereby

migrated to Medina. Fourthly, the Holy Prophet put a stop to the

Meccan caravans that would pass close to Medina and on their way

would encite the arab tribes against the Muslims. These caravans

were always carried weapons of war and posed a grave danger to

the Muslims of Medina. History bears witness that these steps by the

Holy Prophet truly thwarted the attacks of the Quraish in their

tracks. More details about the life and legacy of Hazrat Utbah Bin

Ghazwan will be shared in the next Khutba insha’Allah.

At the end Huzoor e Anwar mentioned that at the 106th anniversary

of al-Fazl newspaper, the online version has been initiated. On 18th

June, 1913, Hazrat Musleh Maood had started this paper. Post

migration to Pakistan, it was then published from Lahore and then

eventually from Rabwah. From today, the online version of the daily

al-Fazl will begin. The website alfazlonline.org is live now and the

first edition is now available for consumption.

Huzoor e Anwar also announced the funeral prayers of two
