Summary of the major items – Lycoming O-320-A2B-150HP Narrow Deck Aircraft was rebuilt in 1985 and field overhaul was done on an O-320-A2B. The log entry on the overhaul was not very descriptive. The airplane was flown approximately a couple hundred hours by the first owner. The second owner (I talked to him right after I bought the airplane from the third owner) told me it flew nice, ran nice but used a quart every 2 hours or so. He pulled the cylinders and sent them for overhaul. Oil consumption appears to have been normal following that cylinder ovhl. In 1992 after I purchased the aircraft I had the single piece venture installed. No problems at all. In 1997 the accessory case was pulled and the sintered metallic oil pump gear was changed to the new one iaw AD96-09-10. Also modified accessory case for SI-1341. In October of 2001, lost a exhaust valve in #3 cylinder. Cylinder head and piston beat up badly, no holes in piston or head, checked other cylinders for debris and found none. Aircraft sat for some time til I found a cylinder to replace #3. Purchased an ECI Freedom cylinder (overhauled cylinder) and installed. Received cylinder with piston within 1 grams of piston that was in failed cylinder. Sent rod out for inspection, replaced rod with new bolts and cylinder installed iaw Lycoming manuals. While breaking in ovhld cylinder, was pointed out that I had a crack in the exhaust port of #1 cylinder by another A&P-IA. He said not to worry but watch it every 20-30 hours to see if it got worse. Did that until I retired in 2004 and decided since I was not flying over mountainous terrain, it was time to stop watching it and replace it with a new ECI titan cylinder. Cylinder replaced in August of 2004 and broke in iaw ECI instructions. Later on when ECI had an AD on cylinders that addressed a machining problem that an AD addressed requiring a small number of cylinders to be replaced by something like 250 hours, the feds also mandated all previous ECI cylinders had to have a compression check iaw the AD note every 50 hours. At some point after that I began doing a compression test on that cylinder specifically practically every oil change and or 100 hour/annual inspection. Compressions have always been good in this engine. It has always started by the 2 nd blade. For a time I was using an approved oil additive called AVBlend. Difficult to find locally in my retirement are and AVBlend was no longer used. Camguard usage was regular starting about 2013. The engine has been practically trouble free after the cylinders were replaced (more than 10 years). On the Pacer, it regularly would true out about 109kts true airspeed at altitudes 7500-9500. Seems like oil consumption was about a quart every 9 or better hours. Oil didn’t show any getting dirty up to that time also. The longest time the engine has not run has been since delivery to Steve’s Aircraft for aircraft rebuild in November of 2015. The magnetos have been on loan from a good friend and they must be returned to him, otherwise everything that is on the engine is to go to the buyer. You will notice more than one 100 hour per year, the reason was I would annual that plane twice a year and two other annuals during the year to meet my 4 annuals per year to maintain my Inspector Authorization renewal requirement.

Summary of the major items – Lycoming O-320-A2B-150HP Narrow Deck

Aircraft was rebuilt in 1985 and field overhaul was done on an O-320-A2B. The log entry on the

overhaul was not very descriptive. The airplane was flown approximately a couple hundred hours by

the first owner. The second owner (I talked to him right after I bought the airplane from the third

owner) told me it flew nice, ran nice but used a quart every 2 hours or so. He pulled the cylinders

and sent them for overhaul. Oil consumption appears to have been normal following that cylinder

ovhl.

In 1992 after I purchased the aircraft I had the single piece venture installed. No problems at all.

In 1997 the accessory case was pulled and the sintered metallic oil pump gear was changed to the

new one iaw AD96-09-10. Also modified accessory case for SI-1341.

In October of 2001, lost a exhaust valve in #3 cylinder. Cylinder head and piston beat up badly, no

holes in piston or head, checked other cylinders for debris and found none. Aircraft sat for some

time til I found a cylinder to replace #3. Purchased an ECI Freedom cylinder (overhauled cylinder)

and installed. Received cylinder with piston within 1 grams of piston that was in failed cylinder. Sent

rod out for inspection, replaced rod with new bolts and cylinder installed iaw Lycoming manuals.

While breaking in ovhld cylinder, was pointed out that I had a crack in the exhaust port of #1

cylinder by another A&P-IA. He said not to worry but watch it every 20-30 hours to see if it got

worse. Did that until I retired in 2004 and decided since I was not flying over mountainous terrain, it

was time to stop watching it and replace it with a new ECI titan cylinder. Cylinder replaced in August

of 2004 and broke in iaw ECI instructions. Later on when ECI had an AD on cylinders that addressed

a machining problem that an AD addressed requiring a small number of cylinders to be replaced by

something like 250 hours, the feds also mandated all previous ECI cylinders had to have a

compression check iaw the AD note every 50 hours. At some point after that I began doing a

compression test on that cylinder specifically practically every oil change and or 100 hour/annual

inspection. Compressions have always been good in this engine. It has always started by the 2nd

blade. For a time I was using an approved oil additive called AVBlend. Difficult to find locally in my

retirement are and AVBlend was no longer used. Camguard usage was regular starting about 2013.

The engine has been practically trouble free after the cylinders were replaced (more than 10 years).

On the Pacer, it regularly would true out about 109kts true airspeed at altitudes 7500-9500. Seems

like oil consumption was about a quart every 9 or better hours. Oil didn’t show any getting dirty up

to that time also. The longest time the engine has not run has been since delivery to Steve’s Aircraft

for aircraft rebuild in November of 2015.

The magnetos have been on loan from a good friend and they must be returned to him, otherwise

everything that is on the engine is to go to the buyer. You will notice more than one 100 hour per

year, the reason was I would annual that plane twice a year and two other annuals during the year

to meet my 4 annuals per year to maintain my Inspector Authorization renewal requirement.

Log entries were originally typed so I could read them and printed to self adhesive sheets, cut and

entered into a regular log book. Starting in about 2003 or 2004 I began typing in a word processor

and keeping records in an 8-1/2 x 11 fromat in a note book and file. About 2012 I developed a

spread sheet to enter entries into using computed cells to give me all the times with only an entry of

tach time (fewer math errors).
