$300,000 Grant Received to Improve Campus Lighting

Lenoir-Rhyne University recently received a $300K grant from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts to be used for an improved Campus Lighting Program. As the enrollment at Lenoir-Rhyne University continues to grow, the safety of the students and crime prevention remain a top priority. Recent student surveys identified campus lighting as a priority. In response to these surveys, the university contracted with the design and engineering firm of Woolpert, Inc to conduct a survey of the current campus lighting and to make recommendations regarding additional and improved lighting. The consulting firm considered, among other criteria, the quantity of lighting, the type and quality of lighting, preferred pedestrian usage of areas on campus, crime prevention, and safety. The survey determined that consistency in the type of lighting would provide greater illumination, energy efficiency, and enhanced aesthetics. It also identified the high, medium and low priority need areas on campus. The current grant is the latest in a series of grants that have provided the Lenoir-Rhyne campus with numer-ous physical improvements to buildings and equipment. When the Campus Lighting Program is completed later this year, there will be increased energy efficiency, greater pedestrian safety, enhanced visibility and an improved campus appearance, and it will promote the increased use of selected corridors to frequently used campus facilities.

Woman graduates at age 70

Katharine Crawley spent the last 18 years trying to get to where she is now. At age 70, she graduated from L-R on May 13 with a double major in psychology and human and community services and a minor in religion. Crawley’s road toward a bachelor’s degree began in 1993. She was working at Ellis Hosiery when a friend began encouraging her. She had a full plate, working during the day, picking up her 14-year-old daughter from school, taking care of her elderly mother and taking 12 credit hours of classes at night. Crawley was on target to finish in 2000, and was even completing a 150-hour internship in chaplaincy at

Frye Regional Medical Center, when she got injured. Walking to a restaurant, Crawley slipped on a patch of black ice in January 1999 and hit her head, damaging the front lobe

of her brain, she said. She sustained a concussion and a close-head injury.Although she continued going to L-R and even completed that semester, Crawley suffered from depression as a result, she said. Crawley left Lenoir-Rhyne only five classes short of a diploma. After a few years, though, Crawley decided she wanted that piece of paper with her name on it. Crawley also wanted to give some motivation for her family members, especially since she was laid off in 2008. The university will run a series of ads in the North Carolina magazine “Our State.” Each month’s ad focuses on a different theme, such as stretching yourself, L-R’s graduate program or the school’s master’s of public health degree. The August ad will feature Crawley in its continuing education theme, she said.

Houston named new head football coach at Lenoir-Rhyne

Mike Houston has been named as L-R’s 18th head football coach. He replaces Fred Goldsmith, who announced his retirement last week after four seasons as coach. The 39-year-old Houston received a multiple-year contract, L-R athletic director Neil McGeachy said at a recent press conference. Houston was L-R’s assistant head coach last season and spent four years as the Bears’ defensive coordinator and secondary coach. L-R, once a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) power, went 7-4 last season for its first winning record since 1994. Houston will continue to serve as L-R’s defensive coordinator. The Bears led the SAC in total defense last season.
