This is a very exciting

time for you and your

family.

A whole new world is

about to open up for your

child where there are new

expectations about what

they should be doing for

themselves and they will

start to challenge the

boundaries that you put in

place.

This is normal and is all

part of working their way

towards becoming an

adult

If you talk ‗with them‘

rather than ‗at them‘ about

setting limits, your relation-

ship will be more open,

adaptable and trusting.

This will make communica-

tion easier as they become

teenagers.

Here are some tips on

setting limits:

- Setting guidelines gives

a clear message on what

What to say and when

you need to say it?

As your children get older,

you will need to be able to

talk with them and give

them the chance to share

what they think. Try to

pick a time when they are

relaxed and you both have

time to talk.

―How was your day?‖

― What was the best bit of

your day?‖

Ask the question then wait

and listen

What can you say if some-

thing isn‘t working?

Talk it over and come up

with a new rule or

agreement together

Welcome to the third edition of the Partnership newsletter. We all hope you enjoy the read!

As we are fast approaching the summer vacation, this edition contains information on where to go for fun, free family

days. Ashridge looks particularly exciting at this time of year: but remember to take some waterproof clothing!

Equally, for many youngsters, this time represents a change of school and this can be a major challenge for many. In this

edition, there is a section on moving to secondary school with some hints on how to cope with that change. It is some-

thing parents/carers often find more taxing than the youngsters themselves.

On pages 3 and 4, you will find information on courses and clubs over the summer, plus a number of Help and Advice

lines. The Partnership now has its own website: www.dacorumlps.org.uk. Please check it out.

On behalf of all the various teams across Dacorum, I would like to wish you a very fruitful and relaxing summer.

- Compromise. It doesn‘t

mean you‘re giving in, but

shows that you value their

opinions (however off-the-

wall or misguided they

may be) and are letting

your child take more re-

sponsibility for themselves.

- Trust them. Children

are far more likely to co-

operate if they feel trusted.

Story Lab: Summer Reading Challenge

Come and take part in the 14th National Summer Reading Challenge! If you‘ve taken part before, you will know how much fun it is, if you haven‘t, then sign up, you‘re in for an exciting summer!!

This year the theme is based in the ―Story Lab‖ a five-sided hi-tech HQ that attracts stories from all over the world and sends them spinning throughout the city – and beyond! There are stickers and rewards to collect along the way, with a certificate and a fantastic Olym-pics style medal presented to each child who completes the challenge by reading six books, and talking to library staff or volunteers about them. www.hertsdirect.org/services/libraries/whatsonwhatsnew/storylab

There are lots of activities going on during the summer at your local library; borrow books, maps, videos, DVDs, music and lots more; use the computer facilities including internet access; attend a story time, baby rhyme time, homework club or reading group.
