Germantown’s Great Hall
was the setting for the
2nd annual Get Down &
Derby, DSAM’s fund-
raiser and celebration of
the 138th running of the
Kentucky Derby.
“Over 200 people at-
tended and I think every-
one had a good time,” said
DSAM Executive Direc-
tor, Martine Hobson.
Events and Fundraising
Manager, Donna Cash
agreed. “It was as much
fun as is was a success.
We can’t wait until next
year.”
Derby was a Tremendous Success!
Well, here we are into the
full swing of summer. It’s
hard to believe that we’re
already into July. Here at
DSAM, we are also in
high gear. Our Summer
Steps program, see arti-
cle, is at capacity and is
inclusive. We also have
an inclusive volunteer
group. We’re so excited
about educating our little
ones.
The Derby was a huge
success and was such fun!
We had our second Mom’s
Night Out of the year on
June 18th and are looking
forward to Bowling on
July 13th.
The Step Up for Down
Syndrome committee has
already had its second
meeting and will soon be
in full swing. We are for-
tunate to have Denise
Martin, who has volun-
teered to chair the SUDS
event. She has one co-
chair, Amber Cook, and is
looking for a second. Call
me if you’re interested in
co-chairing or serving on
the committee. This leads
me to say “thank you” to
all of our wonderful vol-
unteers. We couldn’t do
what we do without you.
This year, DSAM will be
well represented at the
National Down Syndrome
Congress (NDSC) conven-
tion. We have four self
advocates going and rep-
resenting us at the Self
Advocate Council Delega-
tion, three school teach-
ers and nine families
attending NDSC. In total,
we have 25 from Mem-
phis!
Our office has gone
through a few changes
since the last newsletter.
When you call or come
by, you’ll be greeted by
new employees, Kay
French and Karen Rich-
ards. Donna Cash has
been doing a great job in
her fundraising capacity,
and our newsletter will
have a new look and is
being edited by Annie
Austin. Welcome to them
all!
As always, if you have
any question, thoughts
or concerns, please call
me.
Happy Summer!
—Martine
