Summer provides the perfect opportunity for educators to expand their knowledge through effective professional development. Summer courses through Lesley University’s Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative provide educators with critical skills, knowledge, and inspiration to help every student become a more confident and engaged learner. With high quality training, teachers return to their schools with renewed enthusiasm, innovative ideas, and a readiness to address Common Core State Standards.

The Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative, directed by Irene Fountas, is a nationally recognized leader in literacy professional development for educators working with students in grades PreK-8. The Center, located on the Lesley University campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is known for its research-based curriculum and rigorous training.

AUDIENCE

This institute is suitable for classroom teachers, reading teachers, literacy specialists, and school leaders working with students in grades K–8. It is divided into three tracks to meet the needs of the grade levels you teach. When you register, you will choose the track you would like to take. Intentional Instruction in a Readers’ Workshop: Assuring High-Level Competencies For the Common Core, Grades K–8PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 24

Our annual four day Summer Literacy Institute will focus on the structures and rationales for readers’ workshop and examine how the use of whole-group mini-lessons, small-group instruction, independent reading, and the language of conferring all support the growth of readers while meeting the demands of the Common Core State Standards. We will cover topics such as how to establish routines for managing the classroom, engage students in writing about reading that maximizes the impact of Reader’s Notebooks, and select texts for a variety of purposes. School Leaders Seminar: What Every School Leader Needs to Know About Good Literacy Teaching and Effective Literacy Coaching, Grades K–8PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 28

Over the course of this six-day training, you will be introduced to a supplementary intervention system designed to help teachers provide powerful, daily, small-group instruction for struggling readers and writers. Leveled Literacy Intervention students participate in 30-minute intensive lessons, five days per week, that combine reading, writing, and phonics and word study. Leveled Literacy Intervention for grades K–2 uses a specially created and sequenced set of original children’s books, leveled A–N. Teachers use planned lessons that enable them to do highly effective and efficient teaching, resulting in accelerated student progress. An Introduction to Guided Reading in an Effective Literacy Program, Grades 3–8PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35

This course offers an in-depth look at how to use guided reading in an intermediate or middle school classroom. We will focus on observing and analyzing reading behaviors for effective instruction, as well as understanding the parts of a guided reading lesson and how each element helps students become more effective readers. This intensive professional development training helps literacy coaches to improve teacher expertise and student achievement in their school, and supports literacy coaches in all aspects of their role. We will identify the critical attributes of a healthy, professional learning community for adult learners, and how to build it for your school in collaboration with school administrators. You will learn how to navigate the multiple roles of a literacy coach successfully, including creating an effective school-based literacy team, organizing for coaching quality, and helping teachers to see the relationship between literacy theory and real-world practices. Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling in the Reading/Writing Classroom, Grades K–3PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS: 35

This is a graduate-level course that takes an in-depth look at the teaching of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary in a primary classroom, focusing on the nine critical areas of phonics and spelling learning, as well as the role of letter/sound relationships in the reading and writing process. Topics include techniques for teaching how letters and words work and teaching of explicit mini-lessons for K–3 classrooms. With Kristine Haveles-Pelletier, Adjunct Faculty, Lesley University.

REGISTRATIONSubmission of a registration form is an agreement to pay the full event registration fee and to abide by all Lesley University and Center for Reading Recovery and Literacy Collaborative policies.

ATTENDANCE POLICIESWe will issue a certificate of attendance to each participant at the conclusion of the event. Any participant who leaves an event early or arrives late on any given day will receive a reduced number of attendance hours on their certificate. Participants taking the institute for graduate credit are expected to attend and participate fully.

CANCELLATION, SUBSTITUTION, AND REFUND POLICIESNoncredit Students Cancellation dates for each event are on our website If you cancel in writing before the cancellation date, we will issue a refund minus a $50 processing fee If you are unable to attend, you may send a substitute at any time Regardless of weather conditions, if the event is held but you cannot attend, you will be billed for the full amount

Graduate Credit Students Registration fees ($30) are non-refundable For courses with six or fewer class meetings, institutes, and conferences, there is a 100% refund if the course is dropped prior to the start date of the course University policy does not allow retroactive withdrawals or refunds.
