FAMILY Y OF GREATER AUGUSTA

FIND WHAT MOVES

YOU

Page 2: Summer 2014 program brochure single page

Dear Family Y Friends, Welcome to summer time at the Family Y! Our camp programs are in full swing, summer sports and activities are underway, and families are laughing and having fun together in our pools. This summer is even more exciting as we will be reaching a new audience in Grovetown. While we have been providing some services in Grovetown through our afterschool and Early Learning Readiness programs, the opening of the Steiner Branch Family Y on May 11 means we are impacting lives in a whole new way! The community joined us in celebrating the beautiful new facility located in Columbia County Exhibition Center in the Gateway development. The new facility features 16,500 sq. ft. including a state-of-the-art wellness center, group exercise rooms, program space, and multiple childcare rooms. The new facility is our first step toward building a free-standing Family Y on the 18 acres we own adjacent to the Exhibition Center property. We are thrilled to be meeting the wellness needs of Grovetown in a greater way!

Summer at the Y means fun activities for the entire family, whether it is cheering on young athletes on the baseball field, enjoying family time at a wellness center, or enjoying a fun day at a Family Y water park. As always, summer means hundreds of children are spending their days having fun, making new friends and building character at Y day and overnight camp. Our day camp program is offered in eight CSRA communities and overnight camp is offered at our beautiful, 88-acre lakefront Camp Lakeside in Lincoln County. Each program is designed to be an exciting adventure for our campers, while also being an affordable and safe childcare option for families. Remember, financial assistance is available for all Family Y programs. Summer is a wonderful time at the Family Y and we always enjoy the laughter and smiling faces of those who visit our facilities. We appreciate our members and the opportunity to strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy summer! Sincerely, Danny McConnell President and CEO The Family Y

GET CONNECTED We know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance in life. That’s why we’re here with you every day, making sure that you, your family and our community have the resources and support needed to learn, grow and thrive. With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your participation will not just bring about meaningful change in yourself, but in your community too. Here are some of the ways you can get involved.

Membership You are not a member of a gym when you join the Y; you are a member of a family. Y members receive full access to ALL facility amenities including group exercise classes, childwatch and kid’s clubhouse, discounts on classes and programs with a fee. A metro membership allows you to use any Y membership facility within the association. Heritage Club Just as we strengthen our minds and bodies today, The Family Y is strengthening our organization for tomorrow. The Family Y’s Endowment Fund is critical to ensuring that the work of the Y continues with children and families in our next generation. If you are interested in joining The Family Y’s Heritage Club, contact the Endowment Director at 706 922 9130.

Community Support Campaign Our Community Support Campaign provides the funds so we can help individuals and families in need who would otherwise be unable to afford to be part of the Y. Your financial contribution helps the Y welcome everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. To make an impact, contact the Development Director at 706 922 9663. Volunteer Opportunities When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood. Volunteer opportunities are available at most Y facilities and can be found online at www.thefamilyy.org. We take an active effort to protect the vulnerable populations served at The Family Y. A volunteer application including a background check must be completed before service can begin. Please allow 2 weeks for the application process to be completed. For more information, contact the Community Relations Coordinator at 706 922 9673.

CHILDREN LEARN THE BASICS AT GROVETOWN EARLY LEARNING CENTER The Y wants to ensure that all children are prepared to learn, thrive, and grow upon entering school. For children whose families speak a language other than English at home, a lack of language skill can cause them to struggle in kindergarten. Thanks to welcoming Hispanic families, the Family Y now offers a free program to prepare children, ages birth to 5, for school. In March, the Y opened the Early Learning Readiness Center in Grovetown and now serves 13 to 15 families regularly with a total of 20 children.

“When most of the families originally came to us, they were speaking only Spanish at home. They wanted to learn English, they wanted their children to succeed in school,” program Director Elaine Cupp explains, “We present it in Spanish and in English.” Since a caregiver comes with their child to the Center, both the children and the caregivers learn. “By speaking English in the Center, it helps the adult caregiver begin to speak English. They have to practice it, and if they don’t have anybody to practice with at home, they can practice with us and their child here at the Center,” Ms. Cupp affirms. Cupp is a former Family Y after-school coordinator for Aiken County. She was also a preschool teacher for 19 years and worked with special-needs children. During the summer, the Grovetown Center provides both academic enrichment and a nutritious meal. Through Columbia County’s Community Connections’ “Smart Lunch, Smart Kid,” free lunch is provided daily for up to 50 students. Although the program is targeted toward the growing Hispanic community in Grovetown, it is open to all families with preschoolers. Registration for the fall session is now open.
