The Untold Story of Adele aus der Ohe Lecture and Musical PerformanceLaWayne Leno and Reid SmithJoin us for an exciting evening of piano music and an informative lecture about music history in Minnesota. After a short piano concert by award-winning students of Dr. Reid Smith, LaWayne Leno will introduce us to “an astonishing woman in an astonishing place at an astonishing time,” Adele aus der Ohe. Mr. Leno will read excerpts from his internationally acclaimed biography The Untold Story of Adele aus der Ohe: From a Liszt Student to a Virtuoso.

This lecture will highlight the amazing musical life in Minnesota from 1888-1904, and the life of Adele aus der Ohe, who performed six times in Minnesota including the opening concert of the Schubert Club as well as the opening concert in Carnegie Hall with Tchaikovsky conducting.

Alan Walker, Professor Emeritus of Music at McMaster University and prize-wining biographer wrote: “We cannot help but marvel at the shroud of neglect that obscured Adele aus der Ohe from our view, and Mr. Leno must be thanked for bringing her out of the shadows.”

This “Untold Story” will be further revealed on June 1 and 2 when Lakeshore Players presents Mr. Leno’s play at The Hanifl Performing Arts Center. Please contact Lakeshore Players directly for tickets to the play.

Inside you there is an artist you don’t know about. -Rumi

Dear Friends,

As we finally shove parkas and boots into dark corners with an extra kick of “good riddance,” we Minnesotans have earned our bragging rights. Yet as the sandals come out, in flood those pangs of panic that we must squeeze every last drop out of summer’s juice before it’s gone. Those terrifyingly cold nights, punctuated by booms of ice-quakes, are all too quickly going to be back. And so, I must warn you: WBCA’s summer catalog is going to add to your panic.

It’s loaded with so much good stuff that you should, well…either turn back now, or… Surrender Dorothy!

Surrender to rushing rivers, outrageous greens, and pools of reflection in the photographs of Craig Blacklock gracing the walls of our Ford Family Gallery, May 22-July 3. Surrender to Wild and Scenic St. Croix, a film by John Kaul on June 11. And then, surrender to Summer Celebration, Lake Country Pastel Society’s Open Invitational Exhibition, July 18-August 21.

But yikes! Before we jump to August, let’s not forget about all the other opportunities in June and July. How about learning the art of Kirigami and Paper Sculpture, or baking pizzas and flatbreads in WBCA’s outdoor Gove Wood-Fired Oven? There are tons of new classes for teens or tiny tots. There’s Painting Frogs or Sumi-e Poppies. There are Whimsical Dragonflies and Intro to Zine Art. There are ladybugs and fairy gardens. There are flowers to be blown out of glass, or welded, or felted. Oh my!

Want summer adventure? There’s urban sketching, plein air painting, beginning oil, or advanced. There are sculpted gardens to tour or a workshop in France. Staying home? WBCA brings the Mediterranean to you with an evening of Paella Valenciana, or continuing conversational French, or learning Italian. How about maximizing those precious gifts from the Farmers’ Market? Check out classes on page 11 with Peggy Doran. Panicked yet? I am!

Summer will never be long enough, so let’s just surrender. And maximize. That way, when winter does that ground-popping-with-ice-thing again, summer 2019 will come sparkling back, through something beautiful we learned, made, or did together. It’ll be a summer well spent.

So, hurry. Come on. It’s summer!

In this first-ever biography, by local author LaWayne Leno, Adele aus der Ohe is revealed through personal letters, newspaper articles, and poetry. The Techniques Behind the Images: A Photography Workshop with Craig Blacklock Craig BlacklockCraig Blacklock’s photographs immerse you within his images. You feel as if you are flying along side of eagles, standing mere feet from deer, and could reach out and touch the foregrounds of most of his landscapes. Craig will discuss the making of his most recent book, video and traveling museum exhibition, ST. CROIX & NAMEKAGON RIVERS — The Enduring Gift, from planning his trips, to his daily routine, to specific techniques he uses to achieve that “immersive” quality to his images. Craig will offer tips and tutorials on stacked focus; panoramas; stacked focus panoramas; drone images; drone panoramas; and drone video, as well as wildlife photography, including blending in different skies to create optical illusions that trick the viewer into believing they are closer and higher than they otherwise would. Participants should bring 3 of their own images (highest quality file you have of the image, such as a layered Photoshop document) on a USB stick to the workshop for a critique.

Painting Contemporary Figurative Paintings Karen Knutson Learn to loosen up and paint from the heart! We will be drawing more contemporary versions of people, in the loosest fashion possible. Simplicity is the name of the game in this workshop. Many techniques for texture, how to build layers for depth, working with limited colors, and lots of fun tricks done with rubbing alcohol and other tools, are just some of the new skills that you will learn.

One day, we will learn how to do wire drawings, which will help the students to loosen up! (Wire drawings are done with permanent markers and they resemble wire sculptures when completed.) This workshop is geared for all levels of acrylic students. We will also be trying other mixed media for detail work, like caran d’ ache crayons and prismacolor pencils. Karen Knutson is a very sought after instructor who believes that painting should be fun, but also likes to teach good design at the same time! www.karenknutson.com* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

COMING THIS FALLWatching Yourself Think in Watercolor James Nutt Join architect and artist James Nutt as he shares a unique abstract approach to watercolor. James has developed this abstract approach from those evenings when you feel like painting but don’t have a plan. Over time he has found this to be a fun method to quiet your internal art critic, learn your palette, and give yourself permission to just go for it. James will encourage the class through the process of making a single simple decision and then intuitively react to that move with another, and then another. The finished piece is often surprisingly complex for not starting with a plan. The semi controlled nature of this process allows room for the surprising magic of the watercolor media.* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list. Symbolism in Your PaintingShirley BlakeFrom ancient times to the present, symbols are a part of our communication both verbally and visually. Everywhere we look, we are aware of the symbolism in our lives. This course focuses on the daily symbols (ex. street signs) and the more meaningful symbols (love, joy, family) important to us. The exercises will be geared toward non-realistic paintings as you find your own vision of creative painting. Join in on the fun of this unique approach to your artful life.

Artists will work on separate paintings in each morning and afternoon session. Past experience is helpful; however, an open, experimental and “anything goes” attitude is the best. Critique is a part of each session. All media and all levels of artists are welcome.* Visit www.WhiteBearArts.org for a supply list.

COOKINGPaella ValencianaPeggy DoranThe Paella is the pan used to cook this legendary dish, and Valenciana refers to the region of Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean where it originated. It is typically cooked outdoors in the countryside on a dry wood fire. The Paella must be set at a suitable height to be surrounded by flames during the first part of the cooking, and the fire must be kept burning at the correct strength. Generally, good Paella depends not so much on the quality of the ingredients as on combining all the components in the correct proportions. The five basic elements - oil, water, rice, heat, and cooking receptacle - need be balanced with an almost mathematical precision. The experience and personal touch of whoever is in charge of the cooking are also of utmost importance. The preparation of Paella in the countryside is a ritualistic, festive occasion which can sometimes turn into a gastronomic debate! The relaxed, lighthearted atmosphere is punctuated with jokes and comments on the progress of the food. The experience culminates when the Paella is deemed ready, removed from the fire and carried to the table. Paella Valenciana has Bomba rice, rabbit or pork, green beans, chicken, snails, tomatoes, paprika, and saffron. Peggy’s version of Paella Valenciana will use seafood, pork, chicken, beans, chorizo, and Bomba rice. That’s a mouthful! Bring an apron to class. SAORI WeavingChiaki O’BrienSAORI is very different from traditional weaving, placing more importance on free expression and creativity than on technical skills or the regularity of the woven cloth. This is a therapeutic/healing weaving technique. SAORI weaving celebrates the unintentional beauty resulting from our natural creativity and does not try to imitate machine-made products. No two weavers are alike, so it is very natural that every single cloth, freely woven by people with different personalities, is beautiful in a unique way. Irregular selvages and accidental skips of thread add to the un-programmed beauty of SAORI cloths. We admire this irregularity as the unintentional beauty resulting from our natural creativity. In this class we will relax, enjoy, explore, and develop positive thinking through weaving. Enjoy weaving with many colors, textures and utilizing the inherent sense of exploration we all possess! The looms will be set up ahead of time, so you can start weaving right away. You can take home whatever length you weave. You are welcome to bring materials from home that you would like to use for your project such as home spun yarn or strips of fabric. Be ready to follow your heart and feel like you are 5 years old again!

Silk Scarf with Bengala DyeChiaki O’BrienLet’s be creative and make a “one-of-a-kind” free style Itajime Shibori (clamp) silk scarf with bengala dye, or two! Natural Japanese dye, Bengala dyes are made from soil and are environmentally safe and fun to use. The dye process doesn’t require hot water so it is appropriate for students of all ages. You will find this to be a fun technique, just like playing with mud. You will learn about the history and cultural significance of this unique dye form. You won’t be able to imagine the patterns you are creating when preparing the material. That’s the fun part of this class! You’ll enjoy the experience of “opening up an unexpected present” in the final product. The instructor will prepare some cotton/silk scarves and shawls for you to choose from. If you have something extra to dye you will be charged a small dye fee. If you have latex allergy, this is not a good class for you as dyes have natural rubber latex in it. Panoramic Landscape Painting with Acrylic Inks– An Adventure in Adult Finger-Painting David BrowneIn this class, you will learn the basic qualities of two kinds of art media that are relatively new. Acrylic ink is a very versatile liquid paint medium and polystyrene is a plastic surface not commonly used for fine art painting. You will literally manipulate the paints with fingers (as well as brushes) to create a small, but vibrant panoramic landscape painting. The painting technique is deceptively simple to begin, but leads to sometimes surprisingly complex images. The instructor will supply all materials, and in case you are concerned about getting paint on your hands, don’t worry! We will use protective gloves and rags for a clean adult finger-painting experience.

Painting with EncausticSylvia Benson Join in on a new endeavor of working with hot beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening agent and pigments of many colors. It is called encaustic, an ancient art form dating back to the Greeks, which was revived by Jasper Johns and has gained popularity since the 90s. This medium is exciting because of its flexibility and versatility. Wax can be moved with a hot air gun, textured with tools, imbedded with beautiful paper, and turned into a collage. Step-by-step instruction and individual attention will help you develop your painting in this wonderful medium. $20 material fee covers all materials to make one painting; students who wish to make more can buy extra materials for an additional fee. Classes are limited to 6 students; sign up early!
