Levels of Place Value Understanding1. Single Numeral

    - child writes 18 but views it as a single numeral. The individualdigits 1 and 8 have no meaning by themselves.

    2. Position names

    - the child correctly identifies the tens and ones positions but stillmakes no connections between the individual digits and the

    counters.3. Face value

    - the child matches 8 blocks with the 8 and 1 block with the 1.

    4. Transition to place value

    - the 8 is matched with eight blocks and the 1 with the remaining 10blocks but not as 1 group of 10.

    5. Full understanding

    - the 1 is correlated with the 1 group of ten blocks and the8 with the eight single blocks.

    Numeration Principles (Place Value)

    1. Group in tens for convenience so that 10 digits (1-10) representall numbers.

The language can be a problem for students.

Ten ones makes one ten. Ten tens makes one hundred, etc.

long would the line be? If you made a square of 1 million pennies lying flat, as

close to each other as possible, how long would theside of the square have to be? How long would it take you to roll 1 million pennies? How high a stack would 1 million pennies make?
