FFew resources are as inexpensive yet inherently valuable as the daily newspaper. For as little as the loose change in their pockets, readers can get all their local news, as well as learn what is going on overseas and, for sports fans, what happened during last night’s games.

For educators, newspapers can be a valuable teaching tool as well. Younger kids typically aren’t avid readers, but newspapers are often reader-friendly, with concise articles that aren’t as long-

winded as chapters in a book. Teachers hoping to instill a love of reading in their pupils can put the local newspaper to work in a variety of ways.

Encourage kids to read their favorite sections of the newspaper. Kids are kids, and they’re may not be interested in the front page stories or most of what’s included in section A. However, there are sections in every newspaper that can appeal to

kids, and teachers and parents alike should encour-age their kids to read those sections that interest them. The entertainment section might have stories about kids’ favorite movies, while young sports fans are likely to enjoy articles about their favorite teams and players. The goal is to get kids excited about reading, and many parts of the newspaper are fi lled with articles kids can enjoy.

SACADEMY OF THE PACIFIC A Small School with a Big Impact

Step onto our lush four-acre hillside estate in Honolulu, and we will dramatically change how you think about education. We like to think of AOP as “A Village for Learning,” a four-acre campus where bright cottage classrooms, sprawling open spaces and breathtaking views provide the backdrop for project-based lessons that promote individualized skill development.

A curriculum in motion: Here, learning a lesson often means living it, so our students are encouraged to get their hands dirty, whether it is through state-of-the-art technologies or by simply helping a garden grow. This revolutionary approach to teaching was recognized in August 2009 by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, which named us a “School of the Future,” one of a select group of Hawai’i private schools to embrace a progressive, hands-on curriculum. We are proud of this method, which we have used and expanded upon with great success since the school’s founding 50 years ago.

With an enrollment of almost 100 young men and women in grades 6 through 12, and an average class size of eight, students, staff, and parents are partners in building lifelong academic and physical skills, encouraging creativity, and inspiring a strong sense of social responsibility. AOP is fully accredited by WASC and HAIS.

DR. TAKAHASHI JUKU

Dr. Takahashi Juku is a tutoring agency founded in 1977 by Dr. T. Taka-hashi (BA, MA from Tokyo University of Education, Ph.D. in psychology from U.H. at Manoa). Juku’s primary focus is prepping its students for entry into ‘Io-lani and Punahou, kindergarten, fourth grade, middle school and high school, and for the SAT, ACT, and GRE exams. KID POTENTIAL HAWAIIKid Potential Hawaii is one of

550 providers of two nationally researched programs called PACE (Processing and Cognitive Enhancement) and Master the Code. The goal of the programs is to build brain-based learning skills until the child (or adult) reaches or exceeds age ap-propriate levels. Children can increase reading levels

KUMON® MATH &

READING CENTERSKumon® is an after-school math

and reading enrichment program that unlocks the potential of children so they can achieve more on their own. Founded in Japan in 1958, the learning method uses an individualized approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading skills. Kumon helps students build confi dence, improve concentration, develop better study skills and discover a love of learning. The Kumon curriculum spans materials from preschool to college level, from counting to calculus in math and from letters to literature in the reading program. Students begin the Kumon program at a comfortable starting point and work independently on daily worksheets

that follow a naturally coherent logical progression. Most students attend the Kumon Math and Reading Center twice a week, year-round and complete brief daily assignments on their own the other days of the week.

Kumon has 26,000 centers in 47 countries and more than four million students studying worldwide. In the United States, 200,000 students from preschool to high school are develop-ing advanced math and reading skills through Kumon’s Method of Learning. With more than 50 centers in Hawaii, you may locate the nearest Kumon Center by calling 1-800-ABC-MATH or by visiting www.kumon.com.

With a greater number of people out and about enjoying the warm weather, the risk for accidents and injuries increases. The National Safe Kids Campaign says statistics indicate children will be rushed to emergency rooms around the country nearly three million times this summer. Higher rates of drowning, motor vehicle accidents and bicycle injuries occur this time of year.

While skin cancer and sunburn are the most obvious dangers from the sun, there are other hazards as well. Failure to protect the eyes from UV sun exposure can result in photokeratitis, irreversible sunburn of the cornea. While it may cause temporary vision loss, recurrent incidences of photokeratitis can lead to permanent vision loss as well.

Individuals who are exposed to sunlight

between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without UV protection may become sunburned, increasing their risk for skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, this year more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer and about 9,500 people will die from it.

Dehydration and heat stroke are other potential hazards. Drinking plenty of water and other hydrating fl uids (not diuret-ics like alcohol) can keep the body cool and refreshed. Headaches, acting angrily, dizziness, and excessive sweating or cessation of sweating may be signs of a serious sun-related health condition.

PParents go online for a number of reasons, and kids are now often required to use the Internet as part of their schoolwork. But as useful and convenient as the Internet can be, it can also prove dangerous, particularly for young kids. Crimi-nals who prey on children have taken their acts online, counting on kids’ innocent and trusting natures in order to take advantage of children, which can lead to emotional and/or physical harm.

Parents have every right to worry when their kids go online. However, there are ways to safeguard kids from some of the Internet’s ills.

• Emphasize the protection of personal information. Many Web sites ask visitors to fi ll out certain forms when visiting. When discuss-ing the Internet with kids, tell them to inform an adult whenever they visit a Web site that requests they fi ll out a form or questionnaire before continuing to the site. All Web sites must tell their visitors how personal information is used, but kids often cannot understand the privacy policy or will immedi-ately click the “Agree” box below the policy.

Since kids don’t have their own credit cards, protecting personal information should be discussed in terms of popular social networking sites. Caution kids against sharing too much information, which could potentially make them susceptible to online predators.

• Preach caution in chat rooms. Kids can be especially susceptible to the dangers of the Internet when they enter chat rooms. If parents are going to allow kids to enter chat rooms or contribute to online message boards, go over a few basics with them beforehand. First and foremost, tell them to never share their address, full name

or phone number with anyone in the chat room. Also, ensure kids never arrange to meet up with anyone from chat rooms. If kids do make a few online friends they want to meet in person, always be sure to accompany them to any such meetings and insist on meet-ing their new friends’ parents as well. When meetings do take place, they should always be in a public place, such as a library.

• Limit time spent online. The Internet can be a valuable resource, but spending too much time online can be just as detrimental as spending too much time on the couch watching television. Limit the amount of time kids are al-lowed to spend online. The longer kids are on the computer, the more likely they are to drift toward Web sites where their safety can be compromised. If kids only get a set amount of time to surf the Internet, they’re more likely to visit only those sites they need to and not ones that can put them in harm’s way.

• Keep the computer in the family room. Keeping the fam-ily computer in the family room, where Mom and Dad can monitor kids’ online usage without peering over their shoulders, is another way to safeguard kids from the Internet. If kids have their own computers, be it a desktop or laptop, in their bedrooms, then parents might never truly know what their kids are doing online. High schoolers might be able to handle having a computer in their bedrooms, but younger children should be restricted to using the family computer in an area where their Internet habits can be easily monitored.

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUNG WEB SURFERS

Allowing children to keep their own computer in their bedroom could make them more susceptible toonline criminals who prey on kids.
