5. Keynote / Invited sponsored speakers

Four overseas speakers were supported by SPIE and OSA Visiting/Travelling Lecturer

Programs.

1. Janis Spigulis (University of Latvia, Latvia): Hyperspectral and multispectral skin

imaging, Supported by SPIE

Prof. Janis Spigulis started his talk with importance of skin cancer light-based diagnostics. Then

he described the skin structure and physical principles of light-biotissue interaction in application

to multi- and hyperspectral imaging. Imaging of skin scars, bruises and melanoma as well as

skin chromophores mapping were illustrated by examples from Spigulis’ own research group

and from literature. The talk was concluded with the recent trend of smartphone use for such

purposes.

2. Ronald Sroka (University Hospital Munich, Germany): Fluorescence diagnostics and

photodynamic therapy, supported by SPIE

Prof. Sroka reported about research efforts in his lab to treat tumors mainly in brain and prostate

with photosensitizers and light. Absorption and fluorescence of anti-tumor drugs and the

mechanisms of photodynamic therapy were described. Results of simulations of light intensity

distribution within biotissue and thermal imaging were shown. The presentation was full of real-

life images during the surgical procedure.

9

3. Tatiana Novikova (Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France): Polarimetry for biomedical

research, supported by OSA

In the beginning, Dr. Novikova introduced polarization properties of light and mathematical

models to describe them. The introductory part of the talk also included a brief explanation of

the biological tissue structure and the change of its properties in oncological cases. Working

principle of Mueller matrix imaging polarimeter were explained and the results obtained in

Novikova’s research group were shown. The presented Mueller matrix images contained crucial

information about examined biological tissues including location and size of the tumor. The

described technique allows for noninvasive early-stage cancerous tissues diagnostics.

4. Zeev Zalevsky (Bar-Ilan University, Tel Aviv, Israel): Usage of light for remote and

simultaneous "hearing" of many physiological parameters, supported by OSA

Prof. Zalevsky presented a potential of a non-invasive laser-speckle pattern analysis for a range

of biomedical applications, in particular, for non-invasive glucose sensing in the blood stream,

heart beat and alcohol level monitoring, pulse pressure measurements, sleep apnea monitoring,

measuring myography of muscles e.g. during chewing and eye movement, authentication of

subjects based on their unique phono-cardiogram signature.

6. Poster presentations

During the School, 29 posters were presented. We organized a competition for the best poster

presentation. The award was given to Ms. Irina Makovik (Orel State University, Russia) for the

poster “Laser diagnostics method for evaluation of properties of blood flow oscillations in

rheumatologic patients”. The decision was given by the jury consisted of full and associate

professors and SPIE Oulu Student Chapter members.
