Natrona County School District announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program. With summer right around the corner, it’s time to make sure kids eat healthy meals while out of school. Free meals will be made available to children under age 18 at the following sites:

Stuff the Bus, launched in Summer 2011, will again collect school supplies, gift cards and monetary donations so that every student starts the first day of school with the necessary supplies to succeed. The drive is a partnership between the Casper Area Education Foundation (CAEF), the Salvation Army, and the Natrona County School District.

The drive will take place during July and August, and end on August 20. Be on the lookout for donation boxes and the specially marked

school bus at local businesses and community events throughout the summer. You can also organize a smaller drive at your business or church to support our larger community drive. In 2015, we helped more than 400 students with supplies and never had to turn a child away due to lack thereof. Please help us fill every child’s backpack this fall!

Casper MountainScience Schoolcaspercollege.edu/cmssWhat is Field Science?More than 50 years ago, three science teachers from Dean Morgan Junior High School decided they could teach their students more effectively outside, in nature. Dana Van Burgh, Ed Strube, and Terry Logue focused on geology and botany in the beginning, but soon added history and the environment. For over 50 years they have taught secondary students, teachers, oversaw elementary student classes, and led field trips for students of all ages in Wyoming and surrounding states.

The best teaching method turned out to be “hands-on” and “minds-on” science. This was achieved by taking the students to the field where they

could see geological structures and wildflowers for themselves. Once there, many questions were asked to get the students thinking about what they were seeing and pique their curiosity. Students identified plants, created plant notebooks, and listened to the lively banter of their team of teachers.

The spirit of Field Science will live on in this year’s summer offering. We will explore different ecosystems by identifying plants, animals, rocks, and fossils and learn how they interact with their environment. Our goal is to get children interested in science while giving them a thorough understanding of their natural world.

This summer program is available for ages 5-12 (must be at least 5 years old before first day of camp). Activities include games, arts & crafts, field trips, youth softball league, swimming, and more. The program runs from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with lunches and field trip transportation provided by NCSD. Cost of the program includes all activities, field trips, lunches, and afternoon snacks. Sign up for the entire summer or by the week. Due to field trip scheduling and special programs, there will be no prorating of fees or half-day registrations. All registrations MUST be paid for in full at the time of registration. Spaces will not be held without payment. Scholarships of up to $200 are available to individuals who qualify through the Community Recreation Foundation. SUMMER READING: ON YOUR MARK, GET SET…READ!It’s almost time for the games to begin. This year’s summer reading program, “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!,” will kick off June 1 and continue all summer long until we reach the finish line on August 31. The health and fitness theme is a reminder that just as it’s important to exercise and eat right on a daily basis, it’s also important to read (or be read to) at least 20 minutes a day to keep that brain in shape.

With that in mind, we will be offering an action-packed agenda for all ages. Launching Little Learners for children ages 3–5 will be held each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library. In addition, Tiny Tot Time, a special Launching Little Learners program tailored to babies and toddlers, will be held each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Mills Branch. Tweens entering grades 4-6 also can enjoy weekly events for their age group, including crafts, movies, book clubs, a tech petting zoo and much more!

Our monthly Family Nights will feature a dance party, Olympic training camp and get off the couch games while our monthly Family Movies will screen ‘Space Jam,’ ‘Cool Runnings,’ and ‘Surf’s Up.’ And don’t forget about our Family LEGO Club which meets the third Saturday of every month at 1 p.m.

Teens will explore the “Would you survive?” theme. High-

from Fort Casper, the NHTIC, Wyoming Veterans’ Museum

at the Science Zone. Camp Description: Leonardo da Vinci is a great example of the

“Universal Genius,” gifted both in the arts and science. During the camp, students will learn about Leonardo’s legacy and explore the relationship

between nature, art and science in his work. Campers will play

with a variety of art media, create their own masterpieces, explore

the mechanics behind Leonardo’s inventions, and build fun devices of

their own!

Design, Mold, Construct: Exploring Local Sculpture

Camp Description: Explore the sculpture of Wyoming artist Chris Navarro and experiment with a

variety of media to create sculptural art. Examine Navarro’s art in the

NIC’s galleries and around the city, and explore shape, form, texture and

other design elements in his work. Learn new skills while making 3-D

art using clay, plaster, wire and other unusual materials.

Collage Painting Workshop with Gabrielle Reeves

Saturday, June 18 12 p.m.– 5 p.m. (Please pre-register and pay by April

levels of experience welcome.

Explore watercolor and collage techniques in a fun and relaxing

atmosphere. We will create a “collage painting” reflecting on a memory from travel, time away

from home, or any new experience. The collage may be assembled

from personal photographs, paper scraps, tickets, materials collected

during a journey, or any collage items provided by the museum. In addition to collage, we will apply

watercolor techniques to the image resulting in a mixed media piece reflecting a specific memory or

feeling.
