Coventry Adult Education Service offers a widerange of courses at excellent value, and its highlyrecommended by adult learners. Our latest endof course surveys tell us that 98% of learners arepleased with how well their course met their needs,96% made the progress theyd expected, or more, and97% are pleased with the support from their tutors.
Choice will help you get started right here. The step bystep guide on the next page tells you how to nd the courseyou want, and how and where to enrol. This guide aims to make it as easy as possible for you to nd and join the course you want. Just follow these four easy steps:
IMTT: You will need to enrol in person. It is not possible to enrol on behalf of
other people. No enrolments will take place before the published enrolment start
times. If you arrive early, it is likely that you will need to queue. At venues where there is more than one enrolment session, you can only
enrol during the daytime for daytime courses, and you can only enrolduring the evening for evening courses.
Due to funding regulations we cannot accept learners who are agedunder 19 as from 31 August 2011. on to non-accredited courses. Thisregulation does not apply to the Family Learning classes that are
listed on page 26. It is very important that you attend your classes regularlyand that you let your tutor know if you cannot cometo a class. Your place on a course can not beguaranteed if we are not notied of absences.

Course fees and helpwith costsFees for all courses are shown in thecourse listings on pages 6 to 31. Wedo not offer refunds unless there areexceptional circumstances.
Courses which are notaccreditedCourses which are not accredited cost2.40 per hour and if you are over 60,the cost is 1.70 per hour. Courses arefree with a Coventry Passport to Leisureand Learning (PTLL) for learners aged19 and over as from 31 August 2011 (agelimit not applicable for Family Learningclasses). PTLL can not be used forHealth and Social Care classes.

Find the course thats right for youTurn to the page number for your subject area to nd a course that suits you.
Find the venue thats best for youJust turn to pages 5 to nd out exactly where each venue is.
EnrolThe enrolment times for each venue are on page 5. Theres no need to makean appointment just come along with the course fee and/or the evidenceyou need if you qualify for a free course or fee reduction. We accept cash
and cheques at all venues. Payment by debit or credit card can only bemade at some of our venues and these are indicated on the venue andenrolment detail pages.The enrolment process for classes on pages 16 and 17 are different.lease see these pages for further information.
What to do if you miss the enrolment sessionsIf you miss the enrolment session you can call the number shown for thevenue on page 5 to check if any spaces are still available. If there are spacesyou will be given advice on how to enrol.

Accredited coursesIf you take an accredited course, we will expect you to enterfor the accreditation and aim to achieve it.
Important: you must bring your passport or other proofof identity eg your birth certicate, your course andexam/accreditation fee or current, valid evidence of yourentitlement to a free course or nancial support when youcome to enrol.
ccredited courses are free if: you receive Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment
and Support Allowance - Work Related Activity Group(ESA-WRAG);
you are unemployed, looking for work and receiving astate benet;
you are eligible for the Learner Support Fund (LSF). Youcan apply to the LSF for help with course fees, exam andaccreditation fees and travel. You can get details on thefund from your local venue or District Ofce, or you canphone 024 7678 7978. The LSF is provided by the Skills
Funding Agency; if it is your rst Level 2; for Entry Level and Level 1 if you have no Level 2; if you are aged 19-24 and studying for your rst Level 3; if you are aged 25 or over and are studying Level 3 and
have no Level 2.
English for Speakers ofOther Languages (ESOL)To get your fees paid for ESOL classes you have to: be receiving Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or an
Employment Support Allowance (ESA - work relatedactivity group);
be unemployed, looking for work and receiving a statebenet;
have a household income under 20,817.
Free coursesThe following courses are free: English and Maths workshops Family Learning courses Courses to help people with learning disabilities or mental
health concerns to live independently or work towardscourses that offer recognised qualications
Courses up to level 2 that are specically designed to helppeople decide which direction they wish to take with theirlearning, for example courses to build peoples condence.

SupportingTeaching andLearning inSchools
Introduction to the ole of the TeachingssistantThis 4 week course gives you an insight into what it would belike to work as a Teaching Assistant. Following this courseyou will be able to apply for voluntary work as a TeachingAssistant in order to continue your studies and apply for
the Level 2 Certicate in Supporting Teaching and Learningin Schools.
We also offer qualications that are required for new andunqualied teaching assistants and to support careerprogression within a school environment for experiencedteaching assistants who do not hold a relevant qualication.
Level 2 Certicate in upporting Teaching andLearning in choolsThis is a nationally recognised qualication for those whowork or volunteer in a support role, supporting teaching andlearning in any type of school: primary (year one and above),secondary, special, and pupil referral units. The course will
develop your knowledge and understanding of the role ofthe Teaching Assistant. To complete this qualication youmust secure a voluntary work placement in a school for aminimum of one day a week.
Acceptance onto this qualication is by interview only.The interview process will require you to demonstrate thenecessary skills to be able to complete the qualication;during the interview your written and verbal communicationskills will also be assessed. If you are working, in a paidor voluntary capacity in a school you will need the approvaland support of your employer to apply and undertake this
qualication.
Assessment for this qualication will require you todemonstrate your practical skills in the workplace and alsoyour knowledge and understanding related to your work role,this will mean you will undertake private study and writtenwork in your own time.

And we are delighted to announce the date for this yearsevent:
aturday 7th July 2012,at the Eburne eighbourhood Learning Centre,
doors open at 11am.
Everybody is welcome, whether you are an existing learnerexhibiting your work and want to bring your family or friendsto see what youve produced, or you would just like to drop inand view the wonderful work our learners have created.
There will be fabulous displays including pieces of artfrom a range of Watercolour, Drawing, Oil Painting, anddry media such as Pastels and Pencils. There will also bedisplays of - Dressmaking, Patchwork and Embroidery aswell as Flower Arranging, Sugarpaste, Parchment Craft,Card Making, Photography and Beading to name but a few.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be demonstrationsof some of the techniques used as well as an opportunity totry them yourself!
This event is the ideal opportunity to talk to ourexpert tutors, meet like-minded people and ndout more about our exciting range of courses!

of 10 or 15 minutes, for example youll soon see someprogress!
This Summer were continuing to offer a range ofbeginners courses in ute, saxophone and guitar. You needto have your own instrument, but if youve yet to get one,please ask us for advice. We also have some follow-oncourses: in guitar, for example, we have beginners plusclasses for people who have played for about a year; andimprovers for people with two or more years experience.
In response to public interest, weve expanded our guitarprogramme this year to include electric guitar for peoplewho want to extend their guitar skills. And youll alsond that we are again running our popular singing andscratch orchestra courses, ideal for anyone interested inlearning to sing or play with others: singing, for peopleof all abilities including those whove never sung before;scratch orchestra, for all instruments and all levels (exceptcomplete beginners), especially for anyone who hasntplayed for a while and wants to get started again.
Lastly, on all our courses, youll have the opportunityto play and sing some of the songs and music youvealways liked.

We all know that a healthy lifestyle and taking part in regularexercise are good for you but nding a form of exercise youenjoy and maintaining an exercise programme can be difcult.Enrolling on an Adult Education course can help to keep youon track by providing you with the structure, motivation andsupport needed to achieve your goals. We offer a range ofcourses that make keeping t and healthy easy and enjoyable.
There are classes for you whether you are just starting toinclude exercise in your life, wishing to improve your tness,ready for a new challenge or wanting to try something new. Weoffer tness courses at different levels of physical activity andfor different abilities and courses run at many venues acrossthe city. In Beginner level courses you will build on the skillslearnt in terms 1 and 2.
eep Fit classes give a good all-round workout to improvetness, stamina and exibility and eep Fit-Stretch andTone offers the additional benet of targeting and toningspecic areas of the body. eep Fit-Workout is for people
with a good level of tness who want a more challengingclass. Bhangra Fit provides a fun and original workout tomusic with a Bhangra beat and some Bollywood moves.For less active people or those with a medical condition weoffer Gentle eep Fit, which includes mainly chair basedexercises.
There are many benets of Yoga and Pilates and theseinclude improving exibility, strength, stamina and postureas well as introducing you to relaxation techniques andhelping your general mental well-being. Exercises aremat based and Yoga and Pilates classes are offered atbeginner, improver and mixed ability levels. Learners will
be expected to bring their own mats.

The Yoga and Philosophy course is designed for people whowant to extend their yoga practice and learn more about thephilosophy of yoga. You will explore the different strands ofyoga in more depth than in a general yoga class. It will includepractical and theoretical work on the eight limbs of Patanjalisyoga sutras, yoga mudras, pranayama and meditationtechniques. You will need a minimum of 12 months experience
to be suitable for this course and be aware that topics coveredin Autumn and Spring term 2011/12 will not be covered thisterm, however, handouts and reading lists can be given. Pleasenote: new learners will be joining learners who have alreadyattended term 1 and 2.

CookeryCookery Courses are available for people who want anintroduction to cookery skills and techniques and also for thosewould like to develop their existing skills.
On the Everyday Cookery course you will develop and useessential cookery skills and learn to use techniques withcondence in your everyday cooking for family and friends.
To join the Better Baking - improvers course you will need a goodunderstanding, and some experience, of baking. You will be able
to extend your skills and learn new techniques as you make avariety of more challenging cake, yeast and pastry products.
Creative WritingThis is a course for those learners interested in learning aboutthe skills needed to develop own writing. The writing can be:poems, short stories, or other forms of writing. Learners will beencouraged to explore their own creativity to produce literature.This is a course which offers no formal qualications, but istaught to the highest possible standards by a qualied teacherand published author. New learners will be joining learners whohave already attended terms one and two.
istoryFamily History beginners classes and Family and Social Historyworkshops will use computers, as internet searches are usedregularly.
In the Family History beginners classes you will learn about therange of records, including paper and internet, that are availableand how to complete a family tree. In the family and social historyworkshops you will learn about the social, economic, politicaland religious history of the period during which your ancestorlived. You will put together a portfolio based on your ndings.
Please note that the Family History beginners class is enteringterm 3 of a three term beginners course and is suitable for newlearners who have an interest in and understanding of FamilyHistory and who are condent using a computer and the internet.
New learners will be joining learners who have already attendedterms 1 and 2. New beginners may prefer our Introduction toFamily History classes at Gosford Asian Day Centre.
The History of Coventry: this course is 10 weeks long and covers:the history of Coventrys schools, the Coventry Mystery playsin the medieval period, crime and punishment throughoutCoventrys history, political happenings during the 1830s, somefamous gures associated with Coventry (Tom Mann and GeorgeEliot) and Coventry during World War 2.
The tutor will provide information on a range of historicaltopics that are referred to in relation to Coventry either by DVDsor books. During the course there may be visiting speakers.Learners will be encouraged to share with others their existingknowledge of the history of Coventry and will be expected todo reading and written work. Those learners with an interestin a particular aspect of Coventrys history will be encouragedto research and will be given the opportunity to present theirndings to the group.
istory of the rabsThis course is 10 weeks long will be taught on the basis that
learners have no prior learning of Arab history but have aninterest in Arab history and culture. The course will cover:how the Arab world has an inuence on the rest of the world,different religions and religious sites that exist in the Arab world,famous people from the Arab world and the background behindarchaeological sites in the Arab world. During the course youwill also learn about aspects of the history and culture of othercountries and religions.
ee-KeepingThis course aims to introduce learners to the correct methodsof keeping British honey bees. It will be of interest, not just to
bee keepers, but to all who are interested in sustainable livingand have an interest in environmental issues. It will include thehistory of bees, why they are at risk, keeping them safe, productswe get from them, like make-up, sweets and medicine andcurrent issues relating to British honey bees.

Emergency First id at Work (EFW)The course is twelve hours long and will give you the skillsto deal with minor emergencies and recognise medicalconditions. Some of the things you will learn includeresuscitation, how to deal with unconsciousness and how totreat bleeds and fractures. The course has a certicate which
is valid for three years.
You will need to have sufcient English language skills, bothwritten and spoken to be able to follow verbal instructions anddo written practical exercises.

Our Family Learning team offers a range of exciting courseswhich are free and fun. Some are for children and parents tolearn together. Others are for parents only, often supportedby a free crche.
If you do not have a Level 2 maths or English qualication (egGCSE grade C or above), our Keeping Up with the Childrencourse will help you to improve your own maths and literacywhile learning how your child is taught at school. Parentswho join these courses are better able to support theirchildren with their school work. This is a great way to helpyour children do well at school. You will also be able to get a
Maths or English qualication, which is good for you too!
Keeping Up with the Childrenis run at Adult EducationCentres in many parts of the city and in some primaryschools.
