  • The Titusville Historical Society will hold its eighth annual genealogy conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in the all-purpose room at Drake Well Museum.

    This years early-bird registration deadline is Saturday, Sept. 16, which allows participants to save on the regular registration fee. All registrations must be received by Saturday, Sept. 14. The reg-istration fee for the conference will include a catered lunch.

    The speakers for this years confer-ence and their topics include:

    Elissa Scalise Powell Bridging the Decades: Little Used Clues from the Census

    William B. Moore School Days: Educational Records

    Abigail Watson-Popescu Caring for Your Family Collection: Techniques for the Preservation of Heirlooms.

    Clark teaches full-time in the Department of Library Science at Clarion University. In addition to her profes-sional responsibilities, she works with local libraries, historical societies and city planning organizations.

    Powell is a certified genealogist, as well as a certified genealogy lecturer, and is the co-director of the Genealogy Research Institute of Pittsburgh. She has also served as an instructor for Boston Universitys Genealogical Research Certificate program.

    Moore has been a practicing attorney

    in Meadville since 1975, specializing in real estate and estate law, just recently retiring. His interests are family and old house histories.

    Watson-Popescu has worked in vari-ous museums and archival settings deal-ing with preservation and storage of a multitude of objects and documents. She has recently launched a consulting busi-ness focusing on historical research and

    design aspects of preserving and restor-ing historic buildings.

    Rick Magee and the Roadhouse Rockers will round out the Oil City Arts Councils summer concerts in Justus Park. The band will perform starting at 7:30 p.m. today for the Summers Last Blast event. Food will be available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m.

    The concerts have been part of the ongoing yearlong music series that take place downtown. The concerts are arranged by Daniel Feroz.

    Rick Magee and the Roadhouse Rockers are known for the southern rocking blues sound though they are originally from Northeast. Their sound pays homage to icons such as ZZ Top, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughen, Lynyrd Skynrd and others. They also play their own original sets.

    The band is comprised of Bill Gypsy Cracium on drums, Dave Brunn on bass and frontman and guitarist Rick Magee.

    In 1996 and 1999, Magee was the top finalist in the Jimi Hendrix Electric Guitar Competition. Naturally, Magees guitar style closely resembles that of Jimi Hendrix.

    The band has shared the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Ted Nugent, Dee Snyder, Marshall

    Tucker, Foghat, 38 Special, Great White and more.

    They play around 170 shows a yearacross the nation.

    Since 1995 the band has released five CDs Takin It By Storm in 1995, Honor Among Thieves in 1997, Live at Hazen in 2000, Bad Machine in 2002 and The Best Of in 2009. Theirmusic can also be found at reverbnation.com.

    They are also known as a bikers band and can often found at festivals and large bike gatherings such as the Daytona Bike Week, Myrtle Beach Bike Week, H.O.G. Rallies and Sturgis Black Hills.

    The arts council continues its smallerfree outdoor lunchtime concertsWednesday in Pipeline Alley on Seneca Street.

    Jake Karns will perform on Wednesday and Winslow and Simpson will perform Wednesday, Aug. 30.

    Starting in September, more concerts will take place every second Friday inside the National Transit Building.

    The Rock In River Fest and PA Stone Skipping Championship will be held Saturday at Riverfront Park in Franklin. The festival, which is presented by the Franklin Fine Arts Council, showcases the regions waterways and trails.

    Festivities and registration for PA Stone Skipping Competition begin at 11 a.m.

    Visitors will be able to purchase a variety of food from barbecued chicken to ice cream and more.

    Kids can take part in crafts, enjoy the petting zoo or compete in the annual rock painting competition. O.A.R.S. will offer kayak demos.

    The PA Stone Skipping Competition begins at 1 p.m. for youths and amateurs. The professionals will compete at 3 p.m.

    Skippers who have not previously qualified as a pro, must first participate in the amateur category and if they score 25 skips or more they may then regis-ter in the professional division.

    Competing will be Franklin star and former Guinness World record holder Russ Rock Bottom Byars, the 2016 PA Stone Skipping Champion David Spiderman Ohmer and the present

    Guinness record holder Kurt Mountain Man Steiner.

    The following nearby parking lots are available for spectators: Salvation Army, Elk and Eighth, the VFW on Ninth Street - Liberty Street side and behind building on Buffalo Street and St. Patricks Parking lot at corner of Buffalo and 10th Street and the Franklin School District parking lot at Elk and Seventh Street.

  • Graffiti Gallery exhibitArtist Natalie Moffitts latest series

    On Love and Anxiety is on display through Thursday, Aug. 31, at Graffiti Gallery, 206 Seneca St., Oil City.

    The gallerys hours are from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

    Moffitt resides in Franklin.She graduated with a bachelors

    degree in 2014 from Houghton College. She has spent the following years build-ing a new body of work and learning to integrate her art practice into the daily life of the real world. She has been painting for more than 10 years and over those 10 years progressed from realism to abstract painting.

    She said the series is an intuitive pro-cessing of emotions through paint and color, especially those emotions that arise from the states of love and anxiety.

    Art exhibitsFOXBURG An exhibit featuring

    local artists Donna Edmonds, Glenn Thompson and Cheri Lee Anderton-Yarnell continues through Sunday at the Red Brick Gallery in Foxburg.

    Inspired Expressions: Brush, Lens & Clay features the artists watercolors, photography and pottery.

    A new exhibit titled Vistas and Vignettes: Paper, Pencils and Pastels opens Friday, Aug. 25, and continues until Sunday, Oct. 1, at the gallery. The exhibit features the art of Julia McCray, who works in pastels and pencils, and Nancy Yergin, who creates paper collage works.
