Palmdale School District Message from the Principal -Dr. Brandts
Greetings Summerwind families. We have had a great 2017/2018 school year!
We have had many changes this year with our time change having the greatest
impact. With school starting at 7:22 am., we have exchanged the problem of
many early releases to too many tardies. Please work on getting your child to
school on time.
In April, we celebrated our volunteers with our annual Volunteer Tea. The Sum-
merwind staff is very thankful for our volunteers and would like to encourage
more families to be involved. I would like to congratulate our volunteer of the
year, Angelica Ruiz. Angelica is on the PTA board and has graciously offered to
help next year even though her son is going off to middle school. I would like to
thank our PTA board and members for their hard work. On May 16, the PTA will
be having at general session at 6:30 to vote for next year’s board. We would like
to encourage you to attend so you can be informed as well as show your support.
The month of May is full of activities. We will have our fundraiser DJ party,
JetHawks Attendance Reward Day on May 6th, Staff Appreciation Week, Multi-
cultural Celebration, Palmdale Playhouse Dancers, Summerwind Student Store,
4th/5th Mulligans Incentive, Science Fair May 24 from 5:00-7:00, GATE Showcase,
Field Day, Award Assemblies, and the last day of school. Please see our upcoming
events section for details.
There is an African Proverb that states “It takes a village to raise a child(2017).”
At Summerwind, families, staff members and teachers all have worked together to
create the best environment possible for our students. It’s exciting to see the
growth in our students academically, socially, and emotionally. We are saying
goodbye to our 5th graders who will go to middle school next year. We wish them
a successful a year and hope that everyone has a great summer. So, get rest,
have fun, and we will see you next year for the 2018/2019 school year.

Free and low cost summer events for families in the AV
Summer is just around the corner and that means family time. Here is a short list of free and low cost ac-
tivities for families. Both the City of Palmdale and City of Lancaster add events, so be sure to check the
city website for more family friendly activities. Enjoy the summer time with some summer events.
Palmdale
The Palmdale City Library has many free activities for children and families. Bilingual story time, free
movies with popcorn, toddler story time, reading with the dogs and many other events.
You can call or look on the website for more information.
Stories and crafts together for ages 5-9, the second Monday of each month at 3pm.

Hello Summerwind Families, as we approach the end 2017-2018 school year we are very excited to in-form you about the last PTA activities coming up this month! But, first we would like to thank everyone that participated in our Pacific catalog fundraiser, in addition thanks to everyone that attended the fam-ily glow dance.
We will once again hold our annual tradition of Teacher Appreciation Week May 7th-May 11th. This is the time where you can show your teacher how much you appreciate all their very hard work. Each day of the week students are encouraged to do something to let our teachers know just how appreciated they are. This year the weekly schedule is as follows:
Monday May 7th- Bring a flower for your teacher Tuesday May 8th- Write your teacher a thank you note
Wednesday May 9th – Bring your teacher a snack
Thursday May 10th– Give your teacher a gift of supplies Friday May 11th – Bring your teacher a fruit
We will also be selling Mothers and Fathers Day Grams from May 7th- May 11th during student lunches in the cafeteria for only $1.00 each.
Our Reflections Gala for all our students that participated this years Reflections competition will take place May 9th from 5:30-6:30 in the cafeteria. Please keep an eye out for your students invitation.
We will have our final, famous student store of this school year from May 21st through May 25th. This is the LAST chance our students will have to spend all their hard earn Summerwind dollars.
Lastly, we would like to remind you about our last PTA association meeting on May 16th at 5:30 in the cafeteria. If you attended our last PTA association meeting on March 7th and you signed up for a posi-tion for 2018-2019 school year this is when you must attend to accept your position if voted in.
I would personally like to thank all the parents that have supported our current PTA board and all activi-ties these past 3 years. We know volunteering can be hard at times, but if we all do a little we know it can make a HUGE difference. Everything that we do is for our Summerwind kids and I hope we see more parents volunteering to continue making Summerwind great.

Kindergarten News
It is hard to believe how quickly this school year has flown by and so exciting to see the progress that our Kindergarteners have made! It has been an amazing year of making new friends, learning our letters and numbers, and reading rainbow words. Please continue to review these skills with your child throughout the summer so that they will be ready for 1st Grade! Important date to remember: May 30 - Kindergarten Awards Assembly/Performance. This is a special day of awards as well as a few special goodbye songs. Rooms 1 and 6 @ 8:45 and Rooms 2,3, & 4 @ 9:30. We look forward to seeing you there.

First Grade News
Please make sure your child is reading every night for 20 minutes a night. Please clean out your child 's back pack. Our classes are on Unit 10 in ELA. In math were on Module 6. Field day is on May 29th. Awards are on May 31st at 8 am. If your child is getting a award they will get a notice. On June 1st is the last day of school. Please
make sure your child reads 30 minutes a day in the summer. Have a great summer!
AAPAC News
Congratulations to SW’s Student AAPAC group members and their parents who were honored and received
awards at our last AAPAC meeting on Thursday, April 19th from 5:00 to 6:00. The following students were
recognized for their performance at our Unity in the Community event and for their Black History Month
presentations: Courtney and Camille Boyd, Jeramiah Mc Caskill, Lily Mae Siple, Janet and Elizabeth Onwu-
ka, Katherine and Adryanne Ponce, Zoe Gutierrez, Radyance Love-Thomas, Jaliyah Smith and Ja’ Cori Wat-
son. Thanks to Ms. Dunnigan, our student interventionist, for assisting with the meeting, handing out awards,
and reorganizing the cafeteria after the event. We still need YOU to make sure that all students are successful
in the PSD and at SW. We look forward to your attendance at SW’s next AAPAC meeting on Thursday, May
17th from 2:15-3:15. We will discuss plans for increasing parent involvement and our plans for Black History
Month, 2018. Look for an AAPAC representative at back to school night and other SW events. We look for-
ward to seeing you on May 17th, and remember to bring a friend or parent. As always, childcare and refresh-
ments are provided.
Third Grade News
The 3rd grade's April field trip to the Natural History Museum was a big hit! What the students
remember most was the huge skeleton of a dinosaur and the show “Dinosaur Encounter”. Stu-
dents also saw animals in their natural habitats, gems, and birds. In Language Arts, students are finishing up their mastery guide practice on words with prefix-
es and suffixes. Students will also be studying a unit on “Forces and Interactions”. The essen-
tial question is “How does understanding science help us achieve our goals?” In this unit, stu-
dents will investigate motion and magnetism. Students will also work on science projects for
the science fair which will be the evening of May 24th at 5:00 in Summerwind’s cafeteria.
In math, we are working on Module 7 which covers Geometry and Measurement Word Problems. In this unit, stu-
dents are having hands-on investigation experiences with geometry and perimeter. Students are learning about tan-
grams, tetrominoes, tessellation and the attributes of polygons. Over the summer, it is very important that students
continue to read an average of twenty minutes a day or more. Third grade students should also practice multiplication
over the summer. They can do this by using flash cards, writing or repeating five facts a day. At the end of May, stu-
dents will take home their summer calendar page from the math book. These pages recommend activities that will
help your child keep their math skills sharp over the summer. We wish all families a wonderful summer break.
4th grade news
Fourth Grade is working on their end of the year play. This year we will be presenting “Biomes: Animals and Plants in their Habitats.” We are excited to perform for parents and family on Wednesday, May 23. Performance times are at 8:00 and 9:15. Guests will need to be seated at the posted start time, as we will begin promptly at 8:00 and 9:15.
Please make sure that Science Fair Project materials are at school so that groups can com-plete their Science Fair Projects. The Science Fair is Thursday, May 24 in the evening from 5:00 to 7:00. We are nearing the end of the 4th Grade AR Reading Chal-lenge! Students meeting 100%, or more, of their goal will soon be enjoying a reward. We are hoping that our students will continue to be encouraged to read and practice their multiplication facts throughout the coming summer.
Second Grade News
We are approaching summer quickly! The 2nd grade classrooms will all be working on a science experiment for the science fair (in class). We will be working on da-ta and money in our math series. In language arts, we will be reading about the states of matter. As we end the year, the second grade team is focusing on writing
that is correlated with the three common core genres. There is still much to do this last full month of school in order to get the students ready for 3rd grade. Please make sure your children are going to bed early so they are ready to learn when they get to school.

5th Grade
The Science Fair is quickly approaching! Classroom presentations will be the week of
May 21 - your child's teacher will post her due dates on class dojo. The school-wide Science Fair is on Thursday, May 24 from 5 -7 pm.
We would love to have you come and see the great work our students have done! Friday, May 25 will be the Mulligan's reward trip for the students who have
had excellent attendance, grades, and citizenship! Congratulations to all of the students who will be attending!
Our final Awards Assembly will be on Friday, June 1. Students will be receiving promotion certificates at that time.
We know you will be excited to celebrate you student's transition to middle school, however, for safety reasons, no balloons will be allowed at the ceremony.
In consideration of all the families participating, please arrive on time and plan to stay for the presentation of awards from both
classes. Awards for Ms. Carey and Mrs. Kane's classes will be at 8:30.
Awards for Mrs. Alvarez-Corscadden, Mrs. Beardsley & Ms. Huerta's classes will be at 9:15.
The 5th Grade team thanks all of our parents for their support this year and we wish
our students the best as they move on 6th Grade!
Dress Code Reminders
Closed footwear that covers the entire foot must be worn for safety rea-
sons. Open sandals, high heeled shoes, slippers, and flip flops are hazard-
ous and are not appropriate for school.
Jewelry and accessories that are unsafe and/or dangerous like dangling or
large hooped earrings are NOT permitted. Only ears
may be pierced and must be adorned with stud ear-
rings ONLY.
Students attending school must be clean and
properly groomed. Clothing worn to school must fit
appropriately and be neat and clean. Oversized, bag-
gy, or saggy clothing, tears, holes, patches, slits in seams, and ragged hems
in clothes and/or shoes are NOT PERMITTED.
Shirts and blouses must NOT be oversized ! Shirts must be appropriately
fitted at the shoulders. Tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, crop tops or any
other piece of clothing that exposes excessive skin is PROHIBITED.

Mensaje de la Dra. Brandts Saludos familias de Summerwind! Tuvimos un gran año escolar de 2017/2018! Hemos tenido muchos cambios este año con el cambio de horario teniendo el mayor impacto. Con la escuela empezando a last 7:22 a.m., hemos cambiado el problema de salidas temprano por demasiadas llegadas tarde. Por favor trabaje en llevar a su hijo a la escuela a tiempo.
En Abril, celebramos nuestros voluntarios con el té de voluntario anu-al. El personal de Summerwind somos muy agradecidos por nuestros voluntarios y queremos alentar a mas familias que sean involucrados. Me gustaría felicitar nuestra Voluntaria del Año, Angelica Ruiz. Angelica esta involucrada con el PTA y ha amablemente ofrecido ayudar el próximo año a pesar de que su hijo se va a la escuela secundaria. Me gustariá agradecer a nuestros miembros de PTA por su arduo trabajo. El 16 de Mayo, el PTA tendrá una sesión general a las 6:30 p.m. para votar para los miembros del próximo año. Nos gustariá animar su asistencia para que puedan estar bien informados y mostrar su apoyo.
El mes de Mayo está lleno do actividades. Tenemos nuestro fiesta de re-caudación de fondos DJ, recompensa de asistencia de Jethawks el 6 de Mayo, semana de apreciación de personal, la Celebracion Multicultural en Palmdale Playhouse bailarines, La tienda de estudiantes de Summer-wind, cuarto y quinto grado recompensa en Mulligan’s, la Feria de Cien-cias el 24 de Mayo de 5:00-7:00 p.m., escaparate de GATE, dia de cam-po, asamblea de premios, y el último día de la escuela. Hay un proverbio africano que dice, “se necesita un pueblo para criar a un niño (2017).” En Summerwind, familias, personal, y maestras, todos han trabajado juntos para crear el mejor ambiente posible para nuestros estudiantes. Es emocionante ver el crecimiento en nuestros estudiantes académicamente, socialmente y emocionalmente. Nos estamos despidiendo de nuestros estudiantes de quinto grado que irán a la es-cuela intermedia el próximo año. Les deseamos un año exitoso y espera-mos que todos tengan un gran verano. ¡Hola familias de Summerwind, nos acercamos al final del año escolar 2017-2018, estamos muy emociona-dos de informarles sobre las últimas actividades de la PTA que se realizarán este mes! Pero, primero queremos agradecer a todos los que participaron en nuestra recaudación de fondos del catálogo de Pacific, además de agradecer a todos los que asistieron al ultimo baile familiar.
Empesamos el mes con la tradición anual de ‘Semana de Apreciacion a los Maestros’ del 7 al 11 de mayo. Este es el momento en que puede mostrarle a sus maestros cuánto aprecia todo el travajo que ellos hacen. Todos los días de la semana se anima a los estudiantes a hacer algo para que nuestros maestros sepan lo apreciados que son. Este año el horario semanal es el siguiente:

Nuestra Gala de Reflexiones para todos nuestros estudiantes que participaron este año tendrá lugar el 9 de mayo de 5: 30-6:30 en la cafetería. Esté atento a la invitación de sus alumnos.
Tendremos nuestra última y famosa tienda para estudiantes de este año escolar del 21 de mayo al 25 de mayo. Esta es la ÚLTIMA posibilidad de que nuestros estudiantes tendran para gastar todos sus dólares de Summerwind.
Por último, nos gustaría recordarle sobre nuestra última reunión de la asociación de PTA el 16 de mayo a las 5:30 en la cafetería. Si asistió a nuestra última reunión de la asociación de la PTA el 7 de marzo y se in-scribió para un puesto para el año lectivo 2018-2019, este es el momento cuando debe asistir para aceptar su puesto si es votado.
Personalmente, me gustaría agradecer a todos los padres que han apoyado a nuestra junta actual de la PTA y todas las actividades de los últimos 3 años. Sabemos que el voluntariado puede ser difícil a veces, pero si todos hacemos un poco, sabemos que puede hacer una GRAN diferencia. Todo lo que hacemos es para nuestros hijos de Summerwind y espero que veamos a más padres voluntarios para continuar haciendo de Summerwind un éxito.

Noticias de Primer Grado
Por favor asegúrese que su niño esté leyendo cada noche por 20 minutos. Por favor limpie la mochila de su hijo/hija. Nuestra clase está en la unidad 10 en ELA. En ma-temáticas estamos en el módulo 6. Dia de campo es el 29 de Mayo, 2018. Premios son el 31 de Mayo a las 8:00 a.m. Si su hijo/hija está recibiendo un premio, recibirá un aviso. El primero de Junio es el último día de clases. Por favor aségurese que su hijo/hija esté leyendo 30 minutos por día durante el verano. Que tengan un verano maravilloso!
Noticias de Kinder
Es dificíl de creer los rápido que ha volado este año y tan emocionante de ver el progreso que nuestros niños de Kinder han hecho! A sido un año increíble de hacer nuevos amigos, aprender nuestras letras y números y leer palabras del arco iris. Por favor siga revisando estas habilidades con su estudiante durante el verano para que esten preparados para el primer grado! Fechas im-portantes que recordar: 30 de Mayo- asamblea de premios y rendimiento de niños de Kinder. Este sera un día de premios muy especial así como algunas canciones de despedida. Felicidades a nuestros estudiantes de Summerwind grupo de AAPAC y sus padres
que fueron honrados y recibieron premios en la última reunion el Jueves, 19 de
Abril, de 5:00 a 6:00 p.m. Los siguientes estudiantes fueron reconocidos por su
desempeño en el evento de Unidad en la Comunidad para sus presentaciones de
Black History Month: Courtney y Camille Boyd, Jeremiah McCaskill, Lily Mae
Siple, Janet and Elizabeth Onwuka, Katherine and Adryanne Ponce, Zoe Gutierrez, Radyance Love-Thomas,
Jaliyah Smith, and Ja’ Cori Watson. Gracias a la señora Dunnigan, nuestra intervencionista de estudiantes, por
ayudar con la reúnion, entregando premios, y por reorganizando la cafetería después del evento. Todavía nece-

Noticias de Cuarto Grado
Cuarto grado está trabajando en su desempeña de fin de año. Este año estaremos presen-tando “Biomas: Animales y Plantas en sus hábitats.” Estamos emocionados para presentar para padres y familias el Miércoles, 23 de Mayo, 2018. Presentaciones serán a las 8:00 a.m. y 9:15 a.m. Los invitados deberán estar sentados a la hora de inicio publicada, ya que comenzaremos puntualmente a las 8:00 a.m. y 9:15 a.m.
Por favor asegurese que los materiales para los proyectos de la Feria de Ciencias están en la escuela para que los grupos completen sus proyectos de la Feria de Ciencias. La Feria de Cien-cias es el Jueves, 24 de Mayo, 2018 por la tarde de 5:00 p.m. a 7:00 p.m.
Nos estamos acercando a lo último del desafío de lectura AR del cuarto grado! Estudiantes que se encuentran 100% o mas de su objetivo pronto estarán disfrutando de una recompensa.

Noticias de Tercer Grado
El viaje de campo al Museo de Historia Natural de los estudiantes de tercer grado fue un gran éxito! Lo
que los estudiantes recuerdan más es el enorme esqueleto de un dinasour y el espectáculo “Dinosaur
Encounter”. Estudiantes también vieron animales en sus hábitats naturales, gemas y pájaros. En Arte de Lenguaje, los estudiantes están terminando su práctica de maestría práctica con palabras
con prefijos y sufijos. Estudiantes también estarán estudiando una unidad sobre “Fuerzas y Interac-
ciones.” La pregunta esencial es “Cómo nos ayuda la ciencia de la comprensión a alcanzar nuestros
objetivos.” En esta unidad, los estudiantes investigarán el movimiento y el magnetismo. Los estu-
diantes también trabajarán en proyectos de ciencias para la Feria de Ciencias que será la tarde el 24 de
Mayo, 2018 a las 5:00 p.m. en la cafetería de Summerwind. En matemáticas, estamos trabajando en el módulo 7 que cubre problemas matemáticos de geometría y
medición. En este unidad, los estudiantes están teniendo una investigación práctica con la geometría y
perímetro. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo de tangramas, tetrominoes, tesselation, y los atributos de
los polígonos. Durante el verano, es muy importante que los estudiantes continuen leyendo 20 minutos o mas por día. Estudiantes de tercer grado
tambíen deben practicar multiplicación durante el verano. Pueden hacer esto usando tarjetas de memoria, escribiendo or repitiendo cinco hechos
por día. Al final de Mayo, los estudiantes se llevarán a casa su página de calendario de verano del libro de matemáticas. Estas páginas recomen-
dan actividades que les ayudará a su niños mantener sus habilidades de matemáticas agudas durante el verano. Les deseamos a todas
las familias vacaciones de verano maravillosas!
Noticias de Segundo Grado
Nos estamos acercando al verano rapidamente! Las clases
de Segundo grado estarán trabajando en un experimento de
ciencia para la Feria de Ciencia (en clase). Estaremos traba-
jando en datos y dinero en materia. En como terminamos el
año, el equipo de Segundo grado se está enfocando en escri-
tura que está correlacionada con los tres genes centrales co-
munes. Todavía hay mucho que hacer este último mes completo de clases para preparar
los estudiantes para el tercer grado. Por favor asegúrese de que sus hijos se vayan a la
cama temprano para que estén listos para aprender cuando lleguen a la escuela.

La Feria de Ciencias se acerca rápidamente! Presentaciones de aula seran la semana del 21 de Mayo. La maestra de su estudiante publicará sus fechas de vencimiento en Class Dojo. La Feria de Ciencias de toda la escuela es el Jueves, 24 de Mayo de 5-7 p.m. Nos encantariá que vinieran a ver el gran trabajo que nuestros estudiantes han hecho. El Viernes, 25 de Mayo, sera el viaje de recompensa de Mulligan’s
para los estudiantes que tienen excelente asistencia, grados, y ciudadanía en la escuela. Felicidades a to-dos los estudiantes que asistirán!
Nuestro final asamblea de premios será el primero de Junío, 2018. Estudiantes recibirán certificados de promoción a ese tiempo.
Sabemos que estan emocionados de celebrar la transición a escuela intermedia, sin embargo, por razones de seguridad, no permitaremos globos en la ceremonia.

Recordatorios de Código de Vestimenta
Calzado cerrado que cubre todo el pie por razones de se-guridad. Sandalias abiertas, zapatos con tacon alto, zapatil-las y chanclas, son peligrosos y no apropriado para la es-cuela.
Joyería y accesorios que son inseguros y peligrosos como aretes colgantes o con aros grandes no están permitidos. Solo las orejas pueden ser perforadas y deben estar adornados con solo pendientes.
Estudiantes que asisten en la escuela deben estar limpios y bien arreglados. Ropa usada para la escuela debe quedar bien y estar ordenada y limpia. Ropa de gran tamaño, holga-do o caída, ropa rompida, con agujeros, parches, hendiduras en las costuras, o dobladillos irregulares en la ropa o za-patos no son permitidos.
Camisas y blusas NO deben ser sobredimensionado! Camisas y blusas deben ser apropriadamente ajustadas. Camiesetas sin mangas, camisetas de tubo, blusas sin man-gas, camisetas cortas o cualquier otra articulo de ropa que expone la píel excesiva está PROHIBIDO!
