Picture yourself . . . on a boat on a river, with tangerine dreams . . . oops, I got distracted. Beatles song

lyrics swirling in my head like they do, along with ten thousand other random bits of memory and work

and family and future and the business of daily life all billowing into the mix.

Again. Picture yourself on a treetop. You've climbed up this tree as you do every day. Grasping the

swaying branches, you remark to yourself how precarious these branches feel here at the tippy top. The

next treetop might have thicker branches, more stability. So you jump and grab. It begins to rain. You

get wet. The sun comes out. You get hot. Night falls. Cold. Next day is windy. Hang on tighter! Hour after

hour, day after day, the same thought occurs – it's bound to be steadier on the next tree. Jump! Hold!

Nope, same unpredictable and vulnerable existence.

One day, a wise inner voice suggests, try climbing down! You try a few tentative descents, but halt

halfway down. It’s too scary, it takes too long, and what if what's down there is worse than what you're

already used to dealing with, maybe even excelling at, up top? So you climb right back up, and re-

commence the clinging, the unsteady swirling. And on another day, it gets too damn hard, you can't

cling another moment, and you re-examine the options for coming down.

One halting step, one deep breath at a time, your feet connect to the thickening trunk, and you ease

yourself to the earth. Your spine lodged comfortably and steady against the base of this tree, your

breath deepens, your heart slows, your muscles ease. You look up and notice the sun or the rain or the

nightfall or the wind and you wake up to the truth that all those shifts don’t hold as much sway down

here on the forest floor. It's quiet. It's quiet. It's quiet.

If your life is anything like mine – busy, full, challenging at times, the treetop analogy may resonate.

Maybe you can describe with precision each treetop and its unique environment. They all offer some

distinct quality: a heart-quickening challenge, a heart-

wrenching grief, a heart-full of joy. And if you've had

moments of solid quiet and ease, the forest floor may

also resonate. Yes – the business of daily life must be

conducted, and often/usually requires a quick and

decisive climb to the top. And, also, yes – we forget to

climb back down. We forget that we even know how.

Consider this summer spending more time on the forest

floor. Find your favorite "tree" and befriend it at the base

of its trunk. Notice what it is to be held steady by the

presence of something larger and far more permanent

than you. Yoga Sutra 1.2 (right off the bat!) tells us that

yoga is the stilling of the mind's fluctuations. And, to

paraphrase, after 194 additional statements, it says the

best, and only, place where the mind can truly be still is

inside of us, deep in our own heart. On the forest floor.

The Forest Floorby Annie Moyer

Voices from the Path: The Patient Monkey

by Jacque Blundell

In a recent newsletter, Amir referred to yoga and the “monkey mind,” and I thought,

“oh yeah, that’s me!” I even know what my monkey looks like. One of those tiny organ

grinder monkeys complete with cymbals, a little red suit, and a tiny hat.

I’ve been taking Judith Lyon’s class for years and it has been a blessing. We work hard

and pay attention to the myriad details that make up proper alignment. I’m usually

concentrating so hard that the monkey stops clanging around in my brain and stands

on the edge of the mat. He’s just waiting for my concentration to slip and then he’s

right back at it, clanging away on those blasted cymbals.

But this winter, something else happened. Between the snow and being sick, I had way

too many classes to make up. I decided to try Alex Levin’s Yin Yoga class. I couldn’t

imagine how I would manage to be still and quiet

for minutes at a time. But I discovered that it was

a different kind of concentration. Sort of “non-

concentration.” For the first couple of poses, the

monkey was there on the edge of my mat. Quiet,

but there. And then, as my body and mind finally

relaxed, it was almost as if I could see the little

dickens get frustrated, put his hands on his tiny

hips, and stalk out the door.

I have this image in my mind now of my monkey,

sitting on the chairs by the water cooler, waiting

for me to finish class. Once I actually made it to

the front and put on my shoes before I heard the

cymbals clanging and saw him scampering

down the hallway. Maybe one day, I’ll actually make it out of the building without him.
