To say the Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands community is making up for lost time right now would be an understatement! With tight government restrictions on our movements now a thing of the past (fingers crossed) we have returned to resort activities and social events with socially-distanced gusto.

The Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands Bowls Group has hosted a number of major competitions in recent months culminating in their annual presentation night. Check out all the action and details of the group’s most recent events inside.

Our social butterflies have also been busy pulling together some lovely events for the benefit of residents as well as charity. Resident Joycee Smith, an ex-event

planner, is our resort’s go-to when it comes to hosting a resort function. She and a faithful band of resident volunteers delivered a wonderful Movember event to welcome in the festive season. Read all about it, aswell, inside...

As the sun sets on a truly remarkable year, we wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas. See you in January for a fabulous start to a fresh new year!

Managers’ report. In the words of Meredith Willson, Perry Como, Bing Crosby and, more recently, Michael Buble… ”It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!”

Our resort is flourishing on the back of a few recent downpours. It is then beautifully lit at night by the ever-emerging number of Christmas lights, popping up like flowers in our residents’ front yards, back yards, fences, rooflines, windows etc. As a Christmas fanatic myself, the more the better, I say!

October and November have seen a continued easing of restrictions from the heavy haze of the pandemic. As such, our Social Club has coordinated a range of activities that have included (but never just restricted to) op-shopping, restaurant visits, a trip to the Eumundi Markets, a sourdough workshop, fashion parades and a car rally! With Christmas looming, the decoration of the Clubhouse Christmas tree was like watching the raising of a barn; the foyer was filled to bursting point with willing residents, ready to bring Christmas cheer to others. Once again, the brighter the better.

Sporting enthusiasts continue to enjoy the coordinated resort activities, including combined resort golf competitions and even a military “face-off” on the bowling green. They were all winners – it was great to

see so much physical activity going on. Check out all the images on Pages 4-5.

With Christmas, comes the stock standard over-eating of delicious fare! A Christmas lunch will be hosted in the Sands Clubhouse on Wednesday, December 16 with a Christmas dinner planned for Thursday, December 17. Bookings and numbers are already sorted and the menu advertised. Our residents will spill out into the café and Clubhouse area in order to maintain social distancing, but this should not impede a wonderful opportunity to share Christmas cheer with your fellow residents.

Next year, well… who knows what it will bring? Who could have predicted 2020 but, with that said, I assure you 2021 will definitely bring the same hard work and dedication from your Sands team members, and a resolution from our team to continue to make our resort a most wonderful place to live.

Merry Christmas to you and all your family, and the happiest of New Years from all of us at Team Sands!

Whitney & Team Beachmere Sands (including Steve, Kylie, Kay, Jennene and Shelly, Brendan, Shane and Pete).

DIGGERS CUP

Our annual battle of the ex-servicemen, the Diggers Cup, was played out recently over three successive Wednesdays. Navy, Army and Air Force ex-personnel came together to play five singles matches initially (under a time limit), then there was a pairs event and then a triples competition was held, with the total points tallied to find an overall winner.

The Navy team won the event for the second year running (with the Air Force boys taking out the inaugural competition before that).

Pictured right: Ret. Capt. Steve Foldesi, who served in both the Canadian Navy and the Australian Navy, presented Navy team representative Peter Deakin with the winners’ trophy. It was great to see the non-regular bowlers get involved for this match, to support their service.

Bowls news galore.

PRESENTATION NIGHT

While the 2020 season was a little disrupted, our annual Presentation Night went ahead with congratulations to all the big winners.

Pictured top left: Les and Dawn Purdie with Bowls Group Chairman Bob McKenna. Pictured above: Bob presenting Eric (from Beachmere Bay) with his Singles shield. Eric also took out the Pairs competition alongside Beachmere Sands resident Wendy Gibb (who was absent from photos on presentation night). Pictured left: Bob, Greg and Trevor were the Triples winners for 2020.

INTERVILLAGE CUP

The Intervillage Cup is a new competition we play against our neighbours at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay. The inaugural event was run late in November, at Beachmere Bay, just after the official opening of their Westhampton Sports Club.

The trophy for this event (pictured right) is worth mentioning. Ex-Beachmere Sands residents Jim and Helen Brammel donated a 100-year-old wooden lawn bowl to the club which was mounted on a base turned by fellow resident John Close.

The competition was fun, but fierce. Six triples teams (18 players) represented each resort. The result came down to a three-way count back. Both teams won three games each. After two countbacks, the ends were the same so it went to overall points to determine the winner. In the end, the Bay team won. The event is scheduled to be run twice annually on a home-and-away format. The next competition is slated to be run at Beachmere Sands in March-April 2021. Stay tuned!

MOVEMBER IS ONE OF THOSE ANNUAL CHARITY FUNDRAISERS WHERE SUPPORTERS CAN BE SPOTTED A MILE AWAY. IT SEEMS GROWING A MO OR ADDING A BIT OF COLOUR OR EMBELLISHMENT TO YOUR FACE IS DEFINITELY ‘THE NEW BLACK’ DURING NOVEMBER...

The month-long Movember fundraiser culminated, for Beachmere Sands residents, in a gala event in our Clubhouse on November 21. Ably organised by the very lovely and accommodating Joycee Smith (Villa 141), the event raises funds for the Movember organisation. It’s the leading charity changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

As you can see by these photos (taken by Brad Kinross), many of our male residents got in on the mo-decorating and mo-growing action (some had a good headstart though!). With a $15 entry fee, the majority of which went

straight to the charity, guests enjoyed a marvelous dinner and were able to make bids on more than 90 treasures at the ‘Silent Auction’. All up, Joycee reports that the event raised $1925 for this very worthy cause. A big thank you must go to Joycee for her work in pulling the event together and also a big thank you to all those wives and partners who’ve put up with prickly faces for a month!

Congrats also to our four winners on the night including: • Most Colourful: Colin Denton (below, third from left) • Most Epic Mo: Mick O’Byrne (fourth from left)• Patchy Mo: Ken Leach (centre)• Pencil Mo: ‘Danny Boy’ (third from right)

Mo bros, doin’ it for charity.
