New levies bump up rates billBY TARA MURRAY

Funding goals: Sunbury Lions senior coach Rick Horwood (second from left) and Sunbury Cricket Club’s Travis Botten celebrate theredevelopment of Clarke Oval. Also pictured are Geoff Porter (left) and Cr Jack Medcraft (right).

SUNBURY ratepayers face a6.5 per cent rate rise as Hume Councilunveiled its draft budget for 2013-14last night.

Last year’s rate hike was5.4 per cent.

The draft , tabled at yesterday’scouncil meeting, showed the ratesincluded two new charges — 0.6 percent for the council’s payments intothe Defined Benefits SuperannuationFund and 0.4 per cent for a pensionerrebate scheme.

With the new scheme, pensionerswill receive an additional rebate ontheir rates, on top of one given by thestate government.

The rates increase also includes0.3 per cent for the Environment Pro-tection Authority landfill levy.

The council predicts the averageproperty owner’s rates will increase by$84.

Hume chief executive DomenicIsola said the increase was in line withthe council’s expectations.

‘‘We have had to add on things [tothe council’s own rise of 5.2 per cent]for the unfunded super, EPA levy andthe pensioner rebate.

‘‘We try and balance what we canfor the growing community and arenot looking just for this year.’’

Mr Isola said the council would bespending $186 million on 100different services across themunicipality.

The budget includes the council’sbiggest capital works spending of$56 million for new works.

The major highlight for Sunburyresidents is the redevelopment ofClarke Oval, which is home toSunbury Football Netball Club, Sun-bury Cricket Club, Sunbury LionsAuskick, Sunbury Lions Women’s

Football Club and the SunburySuperules.

Mayor Geoff Porter said prelimin-ary design works would help deter-mine the requirements of a facelift tothe oval’s pavilion and change-roomfacilities.

Construction is expected to start in2014-15. ‘‘It’s great news and a greatopportunity for us to continue rollingout fantastic facilities for thecommunity.’’

Sunbury Lions senior coach Rick

Horwood said the redevelopmentwould be another step forward inmaking the club more professional.

‘‘The ground is in good conditionand one of the best in the [BallaratFootball] League.

‘‘The facilities are good for the footyteam but ordinary for umpires, net-ballers and opposition teams.

‘‘I’d like to see a better viewing plat-form for the coaches box and a teammeeting room.

‘‘Hopefully this might be enough to

be able to host finals again.’’Other key projects funded for

Sunbury are: A feasibility study for a new globallearning centre. Construction of a dog park. Refurbishment of the SunburyAquatic and Leisure Centre. Repairs to the Elizabeth DriveBridge. Continued works in the town centre. Lighting and new shelters for thenetball courts at Boardman Reserve.

Big bucks, but none for usBY TARA MURRAY

MACEDON Ranges and Sunbury residentsweren’t given much to smile about in last week’sstate budget.

As the government spruiked the announce-ment of the east-west tunnel as part of its$6.1 billion infrastructure spending, residentswere frustrated there was no funding for newprojects.

Although previously announced projects —including the $3 million redevelopment of Gis-borne Secondary College and works onMelbourne-Lancefield and Gisborne-Kilmoreroads — received funding, calls to fund educa-tion projects were ignored.

Macedon MP Joanne Duncan and BallaratEast MP Geoff Howard, who both called for

education funding before the election, weredisappointed. ‘‘The next funding instalment forGisborne Secondary College is welcome, although it is hard to see how it will be completedon time, and there are no school capital worksfor any other schools in the electorate,’’ MsDuncan said.

‘‘The big disappointment in this budget is wesee further cuts to education and health and noinvestment in jobs, with jobs growth still verylow.

‘‘Cuts to apprenticeships and youth serviceswill make it even more difficult for young peopleto get the training they need for the jobs theywant.’’

Mr Howard said he was disappointed the K-12Kyneton education plan did not get any funding.‘‘Not only does the plan provide for exciting

opportunities for kinder and school students, themove of the primary school to the secondary sitewill leave further possibilities for the Kynetoncommunity as the central primary school sitewould be available for community use.’’

Northern Victoria MP Donna Petrovich saidthe budget was about consolidating and complet-ing the budget promises made by the Liberalparty.

‘‘The east-west link will make it easier forthose people who commute from the MacedonRanges to work and help them bypass the city.’’

Hume Council is also disappointed that thereis no funding for new projects, including parkingin the Sunbury town centre.

There was also no money allocated for theBulla bypass and the Outer Metropolitan RingRoad.

ACCESSDENIED

HUME Council’s Access for All Abilities

program looks set to end, with the state

government pulling funding from the initiative.

Under current arrangements, the Department

of Sport and Recreation provides the council

with funding for the program, designed to

get more people of all abilities to take part in

sport and recreation opportunities in the

community.

The council has been informed that from June

30 it will no longer get the $63,894 a year to

fund activities such as basketball, swimming,

community dance, cheerleading and services

to provide information and support to

individuals and clubs.

State sports associations, regional sports

assemblies and not-for-profit agencies like the

YMCA will continue to get funding.

The matter was due to be raised at a council

meeting last night.

Another gong puts extrapep in dance troupe’s step

Dancing queens: Samantha Richardson,Chloe Newell and Taylah Rees are part ofa 15-strong team which won a nationaltitle in Tamworth. Picture: Paul Rovere

FIFTEEN line dancers from Sunburyand Macedon Ranges have repeatedlast year’s winning performance bytaking out a national title at theAustralian Country Dance Festival inTamworth.

The dancers, aged from 10-28, tookhome the Ashby Cup at Australia’slargest line dancing event for thesecond year running.

The dance troupe are members ofthe Cowboys and Angels DanceAcademy and train in Romsey.

Deb Rees, a proud parent who trav-elled with the group, said they hadbeen training for about 11 months.

‘‘You have to be ultra-fit. You cancompete in a duo, trio or group. It’sopen to everyone.

‘‘The challenge for us was to walkon the floor with 15 dancers, becauseit takes a lot more co-ordination than,

say, a trio. They’ve shown thatline dancing can be cool. The kidshave one hell of a good time as ateam.’’

Ms Rees said line dancing in NewSouth Wales was huge.

‘‘It’s not like it is in Victoria. Thekids were competing with people wholine dance every single day of theweek. It’s pretty high-standard stuff.’’

The next stop for the team is theSouthern State Line Dancing Champi-onships in Melbourne next month.

Then they’ll be boot scootin’ off tothe New South Wales open line danc-ing competition in October.

Fillip for planningMacedon Ranges Council will use a

$25,000 state government grant to gauge

residents’ views on localised planning to

‘‘protect’’ the area. Northern Victoria MP

Donna Petrovich said the shire was an

area of tremendous cultural and

environmental significance and it was

vital that there were planning instruments

in place that protected areas such as the

Macedon Ranges from development that

did not reflect the values of the

community. Planning Minister Matthew

Guy said the Macedon Ranges was

characterised by its unique landscapes

‘‘which attract thousands of visitors each

year as well as world-class agribusiness’’.

Non registrations prove a pet hate for councilMORE than 2500 pet owners in the MacedonRanges could face fines for failing to renew animalregistrations.

Of the 14,244 animals registered with the councillast year, 2607 registrations were not renewed bythe April 10 deadline.

The council’s assets and operations director DaleThornton said the owners would get a remindernotice this week.

He said animal deaths or owners having movedout of the shire might be reasons for some non-renewals.

‘‘An even bigger issue for us is the number of

animals not being registered at all . . . the council isable to follow up anyone who does not renew, but itis much harder to track down pet owners who havenever registered their animals.’’

Those who fail to act on the reminder notice ordo not register an animal on the council’s requestface a $282 fine.

Of the dogs registered in the Macedon Ranges, three are categorised as ‘dangerous’ and six areclassified as ‘menacing’.

In December, the council seized nine unregisteredpedigree dogs through a court warrant.

The council is warning pet owners to avoid

impoundment or legal fees by registering theiranimals.

‘‘Failure to register the dogs left council no optionbut to instigate proceedings in the Kyneton Magis-trates Court in December 2012,’’ Mr Thorntonsaid.

‘‘The owner then had to register the dogs and paythe associated fees incurred, which totalled over$1400.’’

The Domestic Animals Act 1994 requires that alldogs and cats more than three months old be micro-chipped and registered with their council.

Vandals disturbing the peaceBY ANGELA VALENTE

Dead wrong: Doug McArthur with one of the 10 historic headstones vandalised. Picture: Paul Rovere

VANDALS cause damage estimated at more than$30,000 when they struck 10 historic headstones atthe Gisborne cemetery.

Police say that 10 headstones have either beenpushed over or kicked sometime between 9am onMay 6 and 1pm the following day.

Some headstones date back to the 1800s.Senior Constable Les Drew of the Gisborne

police said the damage was extensive.‘‘They’re brittle and old and some have smashed

into little pieces,’’ he said.‘‘It’s a reasonably open area around the cemetery

— you can see right in — but the damage was donein the cemetery’s older part, which isn’t so open.

‘‘It’s a busy thoroughfare for schoolkids. Theyoften use the path as a shortcut to get from theGisborne-Melton Road to Aitken Street.’’

Senior Constable Drew said the attack on thegraves was ‘‘sacrilegious’’ and ‘‘just not on’’.

‘‘I’ve never seen anything like this before. Gis-borne is a small town. It’s still a country town andwe’re hoping we can jog something so someonecomes forward with information.

‘‘It’s disturbing that someone would do this.’’Cemetery trust chairman Doug McArthur said

vandalism at the cemetery was not common.‘‘We haven’t had anything like this for many

years. The last time we had one damaged was aboutfour years ago and that was only a single grave.

‘‘Before that, it would have been several years. It’snot something that we’re plagued with, but it’s

quite distasteful when it happens.’’

NBN in three yearsBY ANGELA VALENTE

THOUSANDS of homes in Sunbury andthe Macedon Ranges will be connected toultra-fast broadband within three years.

The latest rollout of the national broad-band network was announced last week byNBN Co, which is building the network.Towns including Kyneton, Romsey, Lance-field, Trentham, Sunbury and Craigieburnare among the new areas to be hooked up.

A total of 32,300 homes and businessesin Sunbury and Craigieburn will be con-nected to high-speed broadband, as willabout 2300 premises in Romsey andLancefield and 2400 in Kyneton.

The new locations bring the total num-ber of premises in Victoria to 994,600(almost five million nationwide) with con-struction to start by June 2016.

Kyneton NBN Action, a lobby group, has welcomed the announcement that thetown has been added to the three-year con-struction plan.

‘‘It’s the best possible news for Kynetonat this stage, but the promise of ultra-fastbroadband will only be delivered here if thenetwork construction continues after this

year’s federal election, and we want bothmajor parties to commit to that,’’ groupconvener Andrew Hedge said.

‘‘A change of government might meanKyneton is forced to keep its ageing copperline everywhere except in new estates, split-ting the town.

‘‘There is no doubt a fibre upgrade forthe whole town is warranted.’’

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said theNBN would be delivered to every houseacross Australia at no connection cost.

‘‘By the time today’s year 7 studentsfinish high school their household’s inter-net needs will have increased six times,’’hesaid.

‘‘We need Labor’s NBN to meet theneeds now and into the future.’’

Lalla Mackenzie, NBN Co’s Victoriancommunity relations manager, said about athird of eligible homes had already signedup to the NBN in neighbourhoods wherethe fibre cable had been running for morethan 12 months.

Hume mayor Geoff Porter welcomed themove, saying it was important for meetingthe community’s needs.

Fatality raises angstover ambo delaysBY TARA MURRAY

A DIGGERS Rest woman’s death last Wednes-day has led to new claims about lives being putat risk by a lack of ambulance resources in theSunbury area.

The woman, who suffered life-threateningburns in a fire, had to wait more than18 minutes for an ambulance to come fromSt Albans.

The Jacksons Creek paramedics were not inthe area and the Sunbury unit members had abreak at the time.

The woman was flown to The Alfred hos-pital, where she died of her injuries.

Ambulance Employees Association statesecretary Steve McGhie said the lack ofresources was part of a growing problem in theSunbury area.

The Weekly reported on April 30 that bothSunbury and Jacksons Creek code 1 waitingtimes were among the worst in Melbourne.

Mr McGhie said that the dispatch centre hadrespected the company policy by not calling the

Sunbury unit immediately as they were havinga break. An anonymous letter received by thispaper last week stated paramedics involved inthis case were ‘‘extremely upset’’ at the delay.

Mr McGhie said the Sunbury station wasbeing left unattended frequently, mainly due tounnecessary jobs. ‘‘Recently the Jacksons Creekunit was on standby in Essendon and theSunbury unit was on a job, so they had to senda Brimbank unit to a cardiac arrest.

‘‘They [local paramedics] are getting con-cerned that it will cost lives if they don’t havethe appropriate cover in Sunbury.’’

A paramedic, who did not want to be namedand works in Melbourne’s north-west, said theSunbury paramedics were angry about lastweek’s incident. ‘‘Meal breaks can be interrup-ted . . . it’s very unusual that it didn’t happen.’’

Ambulance Victoria group manager 4Anthony Carlyon said last week’s case wasbeing investigated.

Mr McGhie called on the state governmentand Ambulance Victoria to investigate the lackof resources in the Sunbury area.

INSIDESTORY

Peeping from beneath the blunt, heavy fringe, the trademark tresses tumbling over her left shoulder, Judith Durham’s look remains as distinctive as the incredible voice.

Squint and you could be in the Sixties, only as Athol Guy jokes, “My glasses have got thinner and the hair has disappeared.”

It’s the last day of rehearsals in South Melbourne’s Deluxe Audio studio before The Seekers embark on a national concert tour to celebrate their golden jubilee.

Come down from the chill autumn mornings of the Macedon Ranges he’s called home for the past 45 years, Guy is wearing a surgical mask to protect his fellow band members from a cold ahead of their fi rst sell-out performance in Geelong.

Whipping it off for the photo shoot, he scarcely allows himself to breathe over the diminutive Durham. Still they hug and clown between shots with the easy familiarity of old, old friends. Watching them, it’s hard to believe there was ever a 25-year hiatus in relations between Durham and her fellow band members.

While Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger maintained close relations and would re-form three-quarters of The Seekers several times, it seemed that when Durham walked away it was for good. That they remained apart for almost fi ve times longer than they were together is all the more astonishing when you consider just how many records they set in those few early years.

What must it have been like when The Seekers became Australia’s fi rst-ever supergroup hitting the Top Five in Australia, the UK and the US simultaneously?

They had headed to England for what was to have been a 10-week working holiday in 1964 – almost crossing paths with The Beatles, who caused hysteria on what turned out to be their only Australian tour.

If, as John Lennon famously observed, The Beatles became “bigger than Jesus”, The Seekers at their peak were bigger still. Once described by a reviewer as “three bank tellers and a secretary”, they had the power to dislodge the Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and The Beatles from the charts.

But as The Seekers’ popularity grew, Essendon-born Durham was slowly being crippled by eating disorders and anxiety.

“My weight problems had started when I was 15 or 16,” she recalls. “Being an overweight person in blues, jazz and even classical singing was quite acceptable, so I could see myself in those roles.

“When we were catapulted into the pop world I became even more self conscious about the fact I didn’t live up to the image of Carnaby Street and the swinging ’60s.

“I didn’t even realise Britain was swinging when we left Australia. I was still running around trying to match my

handbags and gloves like the Queen. “She was kind of my role model.”

Only the Queen never abdicated. Durham, beloved as she was, did.

“I needed to leave, I needed to do something else. I couldn’t have stayed a Seeker my whole life,” she says today.

Back then, caught in her own bubble, she had no real inkling of the pain she caused fans or even “the boys” as she fondly refers to her fellow band members.

It was perhaps hardest for Woodley, who lost both his band family and his mother within six months of Durham’s departure. He dislikes dwelling on that period but, when pushed, admits when they fi nally came together again there was “unfi nished business and things to talk about. You don’t just wipe away 25 years.”

But with the simple, humble words, “I’m sorry if I ever hurt you”, Durham did just that.

When The Seekers fi nally returned to the studio, the musical rapport that fi rst wowed those lucky 30 or 40 who’d gathered at the Treble Clef on Toorak Road for their fi rst public appearance that seminal Monday night in December 1962 was, in Potger’s words, “absolutely instant”.

“We got together in a little recording studio in South Yarra and Bruce and I fi red up our guitars, Athol fi red up his bass and we started singing I’ll Never Find Another You. It was magic. I still have the cassette. We are putting it on eBay in 2062,” he laughs.

The subsequent concert video of the “little celebration” for the anniversary of the 25-year reunion knocked Michael Jackson’s Thriller 10th Anniversary video off the No.1 spot. The Seekers have been coming together and setting new records on and off ever since.

Last month a portrait of the quartet was hung in the National Gallery in Canberra – 45 years after they were jointly honoured as Australians of the Year.

Between an in-your-face image of Australia’s fi rst lady of rock Chrissy Amphlett and the late Howard Arkley’s airbrushed interpretation of fellow [now former] heroin addict Nick Cave, the work by Helen Edwards looks like a family portrait.

Bold, brassy, larger-than-life Amphlett had died just days before this interview, a fact not lost on The Seekers.

All appreciate the fragility of life. Durham, who with her husband Ron Edgeworth survived a serious car accident at Kyneton in 1990, lost the love of her life to motor neurone disease four years later.

Guy had a lucky escape last year when his BMW – stopped in the emergency lane on the Calder Freeway at Gisborne – was rear-ended at 100km/h by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel.

More recently Potger had a tram crash-test his Volvo in Bourke Street.

“We’ve all had our scrapes,” Guy says. “Yet here we are. We thank God we are still able to get up and play together – the only group as I understand it still together in its iconic form 50 years later.’’

In retrospect, could they have maintained the juggernaut that was The Seekers or did Durham really do them alla favour?

“It became rather academic. We went our separate ways virtually overnight,” Woodley says.

“We were in a syndrome where if you didn’t have a hit with every record you didn’t have a career. We were getting songs like the daughter of Georgy Girl and the son of Morningtown Ride sent to us – there was a lot of sameness to it,” Guy recalls.

“It is extremely diffi cult to judge from within. We made a collective decision we had perhaps peaked and were coasting or cruising,” Potger explains. “But the fans didn’t think that and they showed it in no uncertain terms when we broke up. They kept it all alive.”

What’s the magic to The Seekers? “If only we knew,” Guy laughs. “It is a very inexact science,

but we haven’t manufactured anything more than what happened when we fi rst opened our mouths together on night one.”

“It’s the simple melodies that people can easily pick up on and sing to themselves and it makes people feel good together,” Durham ventures. “It’s the same ingredient as Christmas carols.”

The coffee shop where the quartet fi rst sang is now the headquarters of Audio Hearing Melbourne and while their original audience may well be customers, the Seekers still sound like Christmas … come round again.

As Australia’s fi rst international supergroup, The Seekers were in a world of their own, but 50 years on they’re now much happier to share. Sarah Harris reports

Mother’s joys, taken away for everBY ANGELA VALENTE

FOR Kyneton’s Maggie Millar, Mother’sDay was never a cause for celebration.

Yesterday, at a seminar in Bendigo, shespoke to a group of mothers from centralVictoria who were forced to give up theirchildren.

Ms Millar, who was also adopted, wasdrawing on her own experiences. When shewas in her early 20s, she was forced torelinquish her own child. She organised theevent — the first of its kind in the region —with help from Cobaw CommunityHealth.

There were speakers from the Associ-ation of Relinquishing Mothers and VAN-

ISH, the state government-fundedcommunity organisation that offers sup-port services to people affected by adop-tion. Women shared their experiences in anon-judgmental, supportive and caringenvironment.

Many had never had a chance to talkopenly about their experience about adop-tion before because of the associated shameand guilt.

Ms Millar wants women to realise theyare not alone. She said many psychologistsand counsellors were still unaware of theongoing detrimental effects of relinquish-ment on women and men.

She said there needed to be more trainingfor counsellors so they could understand

the experiences of adoptive process anddeal with it more effectively.

‘‘Mothers who have lost babies to adop-tion are over-represented in suicides and inpeople who need help with emotional diffi-culty, because they’re suffering from a greatloss, the grief of which is not acknowl-edged.

‘‘Mothers were expected to just disap-pear. We were told it’s just like having atooth out — go home and forgetabout it, which shows a breathtaking mis-understanding of what it means to be amother.’’

Varied focusat all levels

From humble beginnings nearly 26 yearsago, Overnewton Anglican CommunityCollege has grown to become a Prep-Year

12 school with campuses at Keilor and TaylorsLakes and a separate year 9 campus.

Principal Jim Laussen attributes the college’ssuccess to its rich and varied academic and co-curricular program at all year levels.

‘‘Our success is also linked with parents ofstudents contributing 18 hours of service to thecollege each term.

‘‘This is key to the success of students’experiences here because they know they havethe support and commitment of their parentsbehind them,’’ Mr Laussen says.

A hallmark of the Junior School is a strongfocus on literacy and numeracy, alongside anenquiry-based approach to the broadercurriculum.

‘‘A ‘You Can Do It’ program is anotheremphasis’’, says Mr Laussen, ‘‘which is based ondeveloping confidence, persistence, organisation, getting along and resilience.’’

Art Costa’s ‘Habits of Mind’, highlighting 16

habits to help individuals be successful, isprovided to Middle School students.

‘‘They are asked to consider these habits whenplanning, reflecting on and undertaking tasksand in their personal endeavours,’’ says MrLaussen.

‘‘And Canowindra, the year 9 campus, allowsstudents to focus on their individual develop-ment and maintain peer interaction through anintegrated hands-on program.’’

One student reaping the benefits ofOvernewton’s education is year 11 student,Dino Vlachos, who was presented with a Spiritof Anzac award from the Premier for his essayon the Anzac spirit.

Get a slice ofthe action withmovie meal dealA night out to see a movie with the family

has become a bit of a treat and now it’s even more special with an $11 movie ticket offer if you dine at La Porchetta Sunbury beforehand. It’s right next door to the cinema so it couldn’t get much easier. This arm of the well-known franchise that’s been in town for more than a decade is owned by experienced restaurateur Gaetano Caruana. He has long-time resident Charlie Camilleri as his head chef, someone who really knows the locals and is in the business of giving them loads of what they want. “We’re known for our Italian food, especially pizzas. We have all the old favourites, along with gourmet varieties that are proving very popular. We also have a large, changing specials board that offers some surprises,” says Charlie. As well as good pasta and risotto choices, the main courses cater for meat lovers with juicy steaks and tender veal, and seafood fans with fi sh, prawn and calamari dishes. Finishers include classic tiramisu and cassata, and assorted cakes. Take advantage of the coffee and cake deal for $6.90.

The modern restaurant specialises in delivering a happy dining experience for families, with the option of eating outside when the weather puts on a smile. Kids’ parties are another drawcard, giving youngsters the hands-on fun of preparing their own pizzas. And there’s a seniors menu.Gaetano is proud of his team’s service standards, claiming their friendliness and professionalism is second to none. “Our takeaway service is fast,” he says, “and we’ve moved with the times, now offering online ordering through an iPhone app. We know people are busy and we do our best to make getting a great meal simple.”An ‘oldie but a goodie’, it’s an eatery that’s earned its place as a family favourite and with its pizza and pasta family meal deals, it makes it easier to feed the hordes.

Home-style cookingat its fi nest From bread roll, Yorkshire pud and chilli

jam to pies, pizza and sticky date, everything from the kitchen of Moobees Restaurant & Pizza in Macedon is home-made. And if that’s not reason enough to discover the eatery that’s been making its mark during the past 15 months, the old movie-themed decor and fi reside dining on wooden tables surely is.Co-owned by Paul Spry and Julie Lind, Moobees is a little gem with no pretensions to fi ne dining. But it does deliver 100 per cent home-made food as a sit-down meal or classy takeaway.‘‘We’re about to kick off our new winter menu,’’ Julie said, ‘‘and our other big news is we are now open for breakfast Saturday to Tuesday. ‘‘The winter lunch and dinner dishes are designed to be hearty and comforting — and a big step-up from pub fare because it’s genuinely home-style cooking.’’A beef and red wine stew served with Yorkshire pud, and slow-cooked lamb shanks atop mash and green beans, are two wintry winners. But the Guinness and beef

pies are popular stayers, too — occasionally swapped for another deliciously fi lled pastry from Julie. An entree that regulars have demanded stay, Julie said, is the Vietnamese spring roll.‘‘It’s a great starter, light and refreshing before moving onto our heartier food. The rolls come stuffed with pork and crab and are served rolled in Vietnamese mint and lettuce, with nouc cham dipping sauce.’’Two takeaway curries (all restaurant dishes can be taken away) are created each week — one day it could be a fi ery vindaloo, the next an exotic Thai green. Each is served with rice, poppadoms and raita. Some nights the restaurant specialises solely in wood-fi red pizza, with Paul at the helm whipping up a Mexicana, for example — a spot-on choice for lovers of a little Latin heat. But there’s a whole list to choose from.Dessert? Of course! Sticky date and strawberry crepes are two of the classic fi nishers on offer.

Real Estate Today

54 Evans Street, Sunbury 9744 255540 Aitken Street, Gisborne 5428 2800 Leaders in Real Estate Excellence

You want to own a home and to begin your search for one. Before jumping in there are a few things

you should keep in mind when going about buying a home. First things first, you cannot buy a home if

you can’t afford it! Don’t assume how much you can afford, find out your loan eligibility. The best way

is to obtain a pre-approval for a housing loan. With the funds you have saved added to the agreed loan

amount, the next step is to allow for expenditures such as stamp duty, mortgage and legal costs, survey

and inspection reports. You can now calculate how much you can spend. Next, when you go in to see a

home, don’t let an unkempt/ untidy house put you off. Try and visualise the house in its best condition

and see if it would suit you. Check out the neighbourhood by daylight and at night to check the ambience.

Make enquiries as to planning proposals for roads, public facilities, or other developments which might

affect this ambience. Are there any rooms that are dark without artificial light? Does that concern

you? We at Dunlop Real Estate are very experienced in all aspects of the real estate market, so why

not take advantage of our expertise, contacts and depth of experience. Once you discuss with us your

preferences, your price range and what you require, we can assist you in your search for a home of your

dreams. If you are interested in a sale, purchase or lease, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744

2555 at any time or, alternatively, call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne to discuss it.

It’s all harmony and restrained elegance here, writes Carole Levy

Beautiful by design

47 Stuart Street, WoodendBedrooms: 4Bathrooms: 2 plus powder roomLiving areas: Study, family-meals, theatre, entertainment, children’s loungeThe rest: Gas hydronic heating, gas log fire, ducted cooling/vacuum, ceiling fans, double glazing, monitored alarm, AVwiring, 45,000-litre water tank, natural gas and town waterconnection, Colorbond 12x6-metre shed, triple garagePrivate sale: $1.08 millionAgent: Joan Gladman Real Estate Woodend, 5427 4307

There are good reasons this property has amillion-plus price tag: a cypress-shelteredblock of about 0.79 hectares and a house

that meets 21st-century demands for cleverdesign, well-chosen decor and extravagant space.

Designed by the owner who moved in twoyears ago, the 33-square house shows flair interms of space economy, technology (thinkAVwiring, LED underbench lighting, sensorlowlights, built-in projector), the environment(water tank that feeds toilets, washing machineand garden taps), and energy efficiency (exten-ded eaves, double glazing, blockout blinds, extrainsulation). But it’s also mighty pretty.

Bamboo and polished concrete floors, ashades-of-grey wall palette, custom-madewindow dressings, random wall recesses, classycarpet and tiles, glossy white accents — it’s allharmony and restrained elegance. Four livingzones (plus study) include a theatre room, and astunning entertainment room with polishedconcrete underfoot and extra-wide sliders tooutdoors. Fabulous storage crowns the kitchen— high-gloss soft-closing cabinetry couples with

a huge pantry with second dishwasher. An induc-tion cooktop and pyrolitic oven wearing theMiele tag, metallic pendant lights and Caesar-stone benches add bling. The main bedroom hasa fitted dressing room and ensuite with walk-inshower with rainfall head, heated towel rails andCaesarstone-topped vanity. Three bedroomssurround a lounge room, with powder room, sparkly bathroom and great laundry nearby.Manicured lawns out back could host a footymatch, garden beds are pretty and manageableand everything is insanely neat.

have not fielded an A-grade netball team for a

number of seasons. Kyneton’s top football

grade this season is reserves, with the Tigers

breaking through for a first win of the campaign

rounds with a percentage of just 28, Kyneton

beat Maryborough 8.15 (63) to 6.10 (46) on

Saturday.

BasketballSunbury’s trip to Whittlesea was one to forget on

Saturday as the Jets went down by double

figures in both men’s and women’s Big V

division 1. The men slipped to three-and-six for

the season with the 79-69 defeat. Gavin Mitchell

scored 18 points and Jay Boyle 14 while Corey

Collier scored 12 to go with nine rebounds. The

women were not as close, losing 87-59 to stay

ninth in the division with one win and seven

losses. Kayla Theodore (15), Megan Shanahan

(13) and Emmie O’Nial (12 points, nine

rebounds) were stat leaders for Sunbury in the

defeat.

SoccerSunbury United’s Nathan Bennis struck a

double to lead the team to a third win of the FFV

state league 3 north-west season. Sunbury won

4-2 away to Geelong on Saturday night to climb

to fifth on the table with nine points. Sunbury is

now three points off the pace of ladder leader

Bulldogs leave Kangaroos flat-footedBY RICHARD JONES

GISBORNE took an unbreakable hold onSaturday’s four premiership points with a nine-goal-to-zero first quarter against Kangaroo Flatat the Gardiner Reserve.

The Bulldogs went ahead of the win-loss ledgerfor the first time this season with the 22.22 (154)to 11.13 (79) win and now sits fourth on the Ben-digo Football League ladder at three-and-two.

Playing his first senior game for the Bulldogsthis season, busy midfielder Jamerson Campbellnailed four of his five majors in a sizzlingopening-term burst. The home side landed shotsfrom all angles as they bombarded the pavilionend.

The Roos almost kept pace with the Dogs inthe final three terms, adding 11 goals to 13.

But the damage had been done in the opening30 minutes, with a 53-point deficit impossible toerase.

Joining Campbell in Gisborne’s first-quarterblitz was ruckman Mark Maric, the youngerbrother of Richmond big man, Ivan. He coolly

slotted the Dogs’ third goal after he led straightup the ground and marked at centre half-forward.

Kangaroo Flat registered three ‘posters’ intheir four behinds for the term.

Goal umpires said after the match the com-bined 10 posters for the afternoon had set a 2013BFNL record – and maybe a new league mark forthe 2000s.

The Roos looked much more composed in thesecond stanza. With Mitchell Hough, LukeLougoon and Tim Brooks leading the charge,Kangaroo Flat added 5.5 to 3.4.

Coach Tyrone Downie steered home the visit-ors’ opening goal of the day in the first 90seconds.

Then after returning Bendigo Gold onballerDaniel Toman had replied for the Dogs, the Flatadded three unanswered majors.

Key forward Harrison Huntley marked andsnapped truly in red time to hand Gisborne a40-point half-time buffer.

The Bulldogs’ earlier pinpoint conversiondeserted them in the third quarter.

The home team added 6.11 after Roo onballerJay Pitto had goaled with a side-of-the boot snapat the Gardiner’s Creek end.

Gisborne’s powerful onball brigade took overwith skipper Casey Summerfield, promotedunder-18 player Ethan Minns and Ben Grechdominating the stoppages.

But it did take 11 minutes for the Dogs’ firstthird-quarter goal landed by Toman.

Up forward Jarrad Lynch was in fine touchwith his marking, hammering home his first goalof a pair after a pass from Lachie Crosbie.

Gisborne cantered home as each club landedfour goals in the last term.

Downie took his tally to an even four aftermarking a Josh Keogh pass on a half-forwardflank.

Darren Farrugia, well held by Carl Rohde inthe closing two quarters, finally broke clear of hisopponent to nail his third for the afternoon whileCampbell wrapped up a big day by driving homehis fifth major deep in red time.

Bulldogs’ coach Kevin Fitzgerald said it wasvital for his team to get away to a good start as he

and his players knew the Roos were a pacy, young side and if they’d got to a lead they wouldprove difficult to chase down.

Referring to Jamerson Campbell, the coachsaid he was a talented footballer, with his abilitycomplemented this season by an improved workrate.

“We probably held him back a little bit tomake him earn his spot and he was really goodtoday.”

Fitzgerald added that big ruckman MarkMaric had been a basketballer and — after inter-league follower Tom Waters had gone down withinjury — had been promoted from the reserves.

Gisborne plays away at Strathfieldsaye (first,4-1-0) this Saturday in the last round before theinterleague break.

In A-grade netball, Gisborne’s perfect start tothe season continued with a 19-goal win againstKangaroo Flat.

The Bulldogs downed the previously unbeatenFlat for the first time this campaign, taking out-right top of the ladder with five wins from five.

With 18 goals, Maddy Staresina was best forWoodend-Hesket, who are yet to win a game thisseason.

Melton Centrals kept their unbeaten streakgoing, winning their sixth straight match 63-45over Lancefield. Rebecca Morabito scored 35

and Bree Dean 28 for the Centrals. Alex Darby’s26 was best for Lancefield.

Sunbury too remained undefeated with athumping 67-16 win over Broadford. Kila Elavoscored 34 goals and was backed up by ShannonGrieve (21) and Narelle Montgomery (12).

Lions put on a masterclassBY LUKE GRIFFITHS

SUNBURY remains undefeated atop theBallarat Football League ladder following aclinical display against Lake Wendouree onSaturday afternoon.

Despite missing nine players from last year’spremiership side, the Lions were a class above, accounting for their inexperienced and under-manned opponent by 125 points, 24.13 (157)to 4.8 (32).

Lake Wendouree got first use of a stiffbreeze that favoured the city end of ClarkeOval, yet it was Sunbury that piled on sevengoals to one in the opening term, includingtwo each to Matthew Medcraft and JoshBurgess.

Medcraft’s first goal was a beauty, evadingthree opponents in heavy traffic before slottingit off the outside of his boot.

At quarter-time, Lakers coach Gavin Webb— who repelled several attacks with strongmarks across half-back — implored his players

to be more accountable, but the gulf in skilllevel became more evident the longer the gamewent.

While the Lions repeatedly found targetsthrough the centre of the ground, Lake Wend-ouree’s decision-making and skill executionwas poor.

Other than Webb and big-man Matt Tumin-ello, it was hard to find winners across theground, although a case could be mounted forforward Nick Aringo, who finished with 2.2from limited opportunities.

Dale Cuinik, who bagged five majors forSunbury, fittingly kicked the last goal of theday just as the siren sounded.

‘‘We were unselfish and very efficient andoverall it was a terrific team effort. Our 12 or13 goalkickers proves that point,’’ coach RickHorwood said.

‘‘Full credit to Lake Wendouree, though. They’re a very young side and it would’ve beeneasy for Webby to throw guys behind the ball, but he didn’t.

‘‘I think we showed Lake Wendouree how agood side plays.’’

Webb conceded that his team was a work inprogress.

‘‘Today was a massive learning experienceagainst the team I consider to be premiershipfavourites,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m under no illusions where we’re at. Wewant respect in this competition and not to beblown away by the top sides like we weretoday.

‘‘We have to respond next week againstanother premiership contender (Redan).’’

Sunbury should continue its winning waysagainst Sebastopol on Saturday, but it willagain be without Simon Clarke, who con-firmed on Saturday that he will miss at leastanother fortnight with a groin injury.

‘‘The plan is to be back for the first gameafter the interleague match, but I won’t betraining this week or next, so it might belonger, but I hope not,’’ he said.

Bombers stand their groundBY DANIEL PAPROTH

RIDDELL held onto top spot in theRiddell District Football League with a46-point win over a gallant Rockbankon Saturday.

It was Riddell’s second consecutivewin on the road and ensured theBombers remained undefeated afterfour games.

Though they ran out deserving win-ners at the final siren, the Bomberswere well challenged by the home sidein patches.

In a low-scoring first quarter it tookRiddell 13 minutes to kick the firstgoal of the game, but Rockbank hitback with the next two throughBrandon McGee and Damien Niki.

The Bombers arguably set up thewin in the second quarter, which theydominated.

They had 10 shots on goal and kick-ed 4.6. The ascendancy came througha mixture of fierce pressure from Rid-dell’s forwards, and a lack of compos-ure in the back half from the Rams.Several turnovers resulted in goals forthe away team.

When Michael Allen booted a goalearly in the third quarter to extend thelead to 31 points, it looked as if Riddellwould run away with the game. Butthe Rams weren’t going down withouta fight, and for a period of about20 minutes in the third had all themomentum.

Matthew Krul started the comebackand Niki added two goals. Runninghard and taking risks, the Rams cut thelead back to 15 points.

But Riddell was simply too slick andkicked late goals to take a 25-pointlead into three-quarter-time.

The Bombers kicked three in the lastquarter, two for Matt Darby, who hadspent most of the day repelling Rock-bank’s forward thrusts.

But Rockbank did not score in thequarter.

Riddell coach Troy Scoble said hisside had plenty to work on if they weregoing to be serious contenders this

season. ‘‘I was happy to get the resultaway from home but in terms of whatwe came here to do today and what weare trying to build towards we have alot to improve on,’’ he said.

‘‘Our ball use was poor today and

there are a few things structurally weneed to get better at because Rockbankexposed us at times today. It took us along time to get going.’’

His Rockbank counterpart LeighSporle praised his side’s effort against

the top-of-the-table Riddell. ‘‘I wasreally happy with the boys today,’’ hesaid. ‘‘They pushed hard. We’ve stillgot a lot to work on but there weresome good signs we can take out of thegame.’’
