CARSguide Saturday, March 10, 2012. 11 PUB: SUNDAY DATE: 10-MAR-2012 PAGE: 310 COLOR: C (310) M (310) Y (310) K (310) Suncream sinks into car panels It seems the company is washing its hands of the problem, saying in effect that it’s not theirs alone, that it affects other car makers and makers of other products as well Send your questions to [email protected] Q: BOTH rear panels of my 2010 VW Tiguan TDI have developed large white patches and several smal- ler ones. When I reported this to VW, I was told that it was caused by suncream and there was nothing that they could do about it. I have since reported it again and written to the manager of my dealership, but again nothing has been done. VW has put out the following statement: ‘‘The marks, sometimes with swellings of the paint/clear coat sur- face, have occurred more frequently since summer 2007. All manufacturers are affected. They are cau- sed by suncream. Since 2007 suncream has addit- ional chemical components for better protection again- st the sun. This makes it easier for sweat from the hands to penetrate into the paint surface and leads to white marks.’’ Have you had any other reports of this problem? Brian Wakelin, email. A: We received the same re- sponse when we approached VW on the matter. It seems the company is washing its hands of the problem, saying in effect that it’s not theirs alone, that it affects other car makers and makers of other products as well. From what we understand, the marks are a result of titanium dioxide that has been used in sun- screens over the last few years. It’s uncertain which is the best way to fix it once it’s occurred. Some say buff it out, others say use a citrus- based cleaner. I would consult a detailer near you or you could contact our paint expert Graeme Cuthbert on 0422 444 335. This should also serve as a warning for everyone with a car built after about 2007. Wash your hands, and your kids’ hands, after using sun- cream and before touching the paintwork on your car. Q: My partner’s Golf GT, which she bought new, had its first engine replacement under warranty, and then at 68,000km it showed the same symptoms — engine shuddering, engine light coming on, and loss of power. After pulling the motor apart, the dealership found cracked pistons and evidence of the block over- heating. We have only ever run it on premium, but they have tried to attribute the problems to being run on incorrect fuel and won’t cover the engine. We now have a practically new car sitting in the shed with no engine in it and we don’t know what to do. Could someone contact Volks- wagen. We are sick of being palmed off on to the next person. No one at VW wants to know about it. Tim Maybury, email. A: We contacted VW on be- half of Tim and his girlfriend and they told us that they be- lieve the car had been run- ning on regular unleaded when it needs 98-octane, as specified. A visual check by the dealer of the fuel in the car indicated that it was 91-octane — being pink in colour. VW also claimed that Tim and his girlfriend were told to use the high-grade fuel when they bought the car. De- spite VW’s assertion that the car has been run on the incor- rect fuel in the vehicle, they One reader has had problems with large white patches on his VW Tiguan TDI offered to discount the cost of a replacement engine. Tim’s girlfriend disputes VW’s claims. She says she was told her car could run on 95-octane fuel if she used 98-octane fuel on long trips, and that’s what she has done. What’s more, she has taken her own sample of the fuel and claims that it is the correct fuel, not the low oc- tane fuel VW say it is. Clearly, this has reached an impasse and needs a moder- ator to settle the issue. One thing that other VW owners should take out of it is that you must run your cars on the recommended fuel, no matter what. If it says 98-octane fuel, run it on that fuel, even if it is more ex- pensive, don’t bear thinking about the potential problems of not doing so. Q: I was recently driving my 2010 Ford Focus LV Diesel when the ESC and ABS warning lights came on and the car started braking. I pulled over, res- tarted the car, and the lights went off. I knew this situation wasn’t normal, so I fully pressed the gas pedal for about two seconds, the lights came on and the car braked and the engine raced without my foot on the pedal. I pul- led up, restarted it and all was normal. What could be the problem — will it cost me a fortune? Furkan Sahin, email. A: It’s impossible to say what’s wrong with the car without running a diagnos- tic check on it, so get it to a dealer to have that done. I doubt that it would cost you anything as the car is still under warranty. Q: I have just had 90,000km service done on my 2003 Hyundai Sonata four-cylinder, which in- cludes changing the tim- ing belt and fan belts. Eight kilometres after leaving the mechanic’s workshop the new fan belts broke. The mechanic said they broke because the power steer belt ten- sioner bearing seized, and replaced them, but six kilometres later the car was running rough at idle. The problem was a bent valve, which was blamed on a seized/blocked hy- draulic lash adjuster. What could bend a valve? Doug Jefcoate, email. A: Valves bend as they come into contact with pis- tons. It could be that the belt wasn’t installed correctly and the cam timing is out, it could be that the belt tension- er has failed and the belt has jumped a couple of teeth as a result, or it could be a prob- lem with the lash adjuster. Q: My 2003 Falcon has a dedicated LPG system and is slow off the mark. How can the pick-up be im- proved, would a chip do it? John Anderson, email. A: A recalibration using a chip would probably help, but I don’t believe there is one available for your car. I would give it a tune-up, serv- ice the LPG system, and rep- lace the spark plugs and leads to make sure the car is running at its best. Q: My 2005 Ford Fairlane regularly stalls and surges like it is going to stall. When it does stall, I turn it off, restart it, and all is nor- mal again. I will take it to the Ford dealer, but what could I be looking at? Ford Fanatic, email. A: It could be anything from a faulty computer to a sensor malfunction or even a dodgy wiring connector. It’s best to get it checked by a dealer as you plan to do.. Q: My 2010 D22 Nissan blows a lot of black smoke, but my dealer said it was normal. I don’t believe him. What do you think? Steve Paton, email. A: No, it’s not normal for a modern diesel to blow a lot of smoke. It sounds like it’s too rich. Check the fuel pump. Q: A tyre dealer has told me to increase my in- flation pressure on my Honda CRV to 280kpa (40psi) when the recom- mended pressure is 200kpa. Who is correct? Ian Munro, email. A: The correct inflation pressure is contained on the sticker attached to the car and in the owner’s manual. I would think 280kpa is too high. toyota.com.au A great deal today Enduring Quality Low cost, capped price servicing Lower running costs Flexible low-rate f inance Nationwide Dealer coverage Renowned for re-sale value A lifetime of Toyota advantages Factory bonus offers applicable for private and ABN buyers on select 2011 build vehicles purchased and delivered between 1 March and 31 March 2012.
