Fundraising News from the Rector:
I’m delighted to report that £215.34 was raised in the last fortnight, for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund, via a Facebook appeal. These funds will be used to help the homeless of Havant. I’m also pleased to announce that to the end of February, the Big Build Campaign raised £21,363, thanks to two generous individuals, and the proceeds of the Lunchtime Concerts. However, we still have a long way to go if we are meet our fundraising target for this year - £167,000! During my forthcoming Study Leave (19 March to 19 June), please keep thinking about what YOU could do, or contribute, to our fundraising total. These funds will be used to continue the improvements to our church and the Pallant Centre….and we can’t do it without YOU!

Question: How many Anglicans does it take to change a lightbulb?
Answer: Change?!
A change is as good as a rest, they say. And we’ve certainly been experiencing some changes round here! At the Charity Shop, our amazing volunteers are getting used to new ways of working—including the introduction of a till, card payments, and a more value-driven pricing structure. There have been changes a-plenty around the Pallant Centre too. New classes and programmes are starting up, all the time. It’s fantastic to see new custom-made storage cupboards in the Large Meeting room (thanks to John Glassett’s expert carpentry), new drainage systems around Pallant House (which are soon to be planted with a mixture of wild and native plants by a local volunteer). Somewhat hidden from view, there have also been some long-overdue repairs to the curtain-wall of the property, new video cameras in the Hall entrance, and a whole load of other smaller, but no less essential changes.
In the church, the long process of rubbing down and then painting accessible walls has begun—and our Maintenance Team are beginning to plan for the higher, less accessible areas, along with long-overdue repairs to the plaster work.
Personally, I’m about to undergo a big change, as I temporarily lay-aside my duties, and take extended Study Leave. It’s not going to be easy to stop thinking about all the exciting schemes that we are dreaming-up together. I’m especially going to miss the conversations that you will be having about how we can ‘Go Deeper’ together—though I very much look forward hearing the results at our Parish Conference on 18 August.
A willingness to embrace change is at the heart of the Christian Gospel. We serve a God who brought an ever-changing, ever-evolving world into being. God’s whole purpose for humanity is that we should be ever-changing (from glory into glory) - ever on a journey of life which changes us to become more like Godself. The Lenten word ‘repent’ implies fundamental and life-transforming change. The Resurrection to which we are all journeying (and which we will celebrate in very different ways this year) is yet another change that God will bring about for all who follow God...the change of our mortal, corruptible bodies into new resurrection bodies, like that of Jesus himself. Let us then never fear change. God never changes in Godself (‘Thou changest not, O Lord, abide in me’). But in a world created with both entropy and evolution in its DNA, God does invite us to embrace change— paradoxically to become more and more like God.
It’s not terribly Anglican of us, is it? But it is very Christian!
