What makes us both truly human and truly like God? Love which is unselfish, undying, and wholly directed to the good of others. It is love that unites us in an unbreakable bond of fidelity and fellowship with others. Jesus loved his own until the very end of his passion and death on the cross. From the very beginning of creation God said: it is not good that man should be alone (Genesis 2:18). We were created in love for love – to be a community of loving persons, just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are united in love. Blessed John Henry Newman said: We love because it is our nature to love, and it is our nature because God the Holy Spirit has made it our nature. Jesus speaks to his disciples of the inseparable bound of love between himself and the Father, and of their love for humankind. In Jesus we see the fullness of God's love and how God's love is directed to our well-being. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him (1 John 4:9). How do we know that God truly loves each of us? In the cross we see the proof of God's love for us and the incredible price God was willing to pay for our redemption. Jesus gave up his life that we might have life – abundant, everlasting life with God – a life of love and unity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit forever. Through the cross Jesus opened a new way of relationship for us as adopted sons and daughters of God – his beloved children (Romans 8:14-17). Jesus calls his disciples to walk in his way of love through obedience to the will of the Father. True love is more than sentiment or good intentions. As important as these may be they are not the proof of sincere love. True love for God is expressed in obedience and obedience is expressed in love. Jesus promised to give his followers the best of gifts, the Holy Spirit as their Counsellor and Helper. How does the Holy Spirit help us? Counsellor is a legal term for one who defends someone against an adversary and who guides that person during the ordeal of trial. The Holy Spirit is our Advocate and Helper who brings us safely through the challenges and adversities we must face in this life. The Holy Spirit is also the Giver of life – the life of God – and the One who guides us in the way of truth. We can never stop learning because the Spirit leads us more and more into the knowledge of God's love and truth. Jesus also promised his followers the gift of peace. Peace is more than the absence of conflict or trouble. Peace includes everything which makes for our highest good. Trust in God, faith in his promises, and obedience to his word lead us to peace and safety in God's presence. That is why we as Christians need not fear or be troubled by anything for nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. This is indeed not only hope but good News!!

THE WORK OF THE NEW ST GEORGE'S BRANCH OF THE SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: The aim of the SVP is to tackle poverty in all its forms through the provision of practical assistance to those in need. Our Mission is to seek and find those in

need, to help them in a spirit of justice and to tackle the causes of poverty where we can. A new branch of the Society of St Vin-cent de Paul was set up in the parish at the start of the year. We were still find-ing our feet when the Covid-19 pan-demic emerged. It quickly became clear that many elderly and other vulnerable people would be housebound and iso-lated so we decided that we must do what we can to help. After leafleting almost the entire parish area, which was a monumental task only made possible by the support of many volunteers, there was an initial 4 or 5 week period when we were being contacted for help every day. During those first few weeks of uncertainty many people were very concerned that they were not getting the support they needed. We were able to provide them with some of that support and to date we have provided assistance to almost 50 people, about 20 of whom we con-tinue to help on a regular basis. A typical beneficiary would be Mrs A who is very elderly and is disabled but lives independently. Her family live in a different part of the country and they were very concerned that their mother would be unable to get her shopping or collect her medicines from the chemist. Simply by shopping for her we are en-suring that she has enough food to eat, she is getting her medicines, we are providing her with some human con-tact and we are taking away some of the worry from her family. We are finding that an equally im-portant part of our work is to keep in touch with people once they have con-tacted us. People are worried and lone-ly and need to hear a friendly voice. So, a number of our members who are themselves self-isolating have buddied up with them and are keeping in regu-lar contact by telephone. We are also mindful of the families of vulnerable people who are worried about their loved ones and are in need of our emo-tional support and our prayers. At Easter we gave each of our benefi-

ciaries an Easter egg and a greetings card. This small act of kindness really touched people, so many people called us to thank us and to give us encour-agement to carry on. As the weeks go by the nature of the help which is needed is starting to change. We are seeing more cases of hardship where people are not able to work and they have run out of savings, if indeed they ever had any. This can leave them in a dire situation where they cannot even feed themselves properly. We are helping to tackle food poverty in two ways: GIFT VOUCHERS Thanks to Caritas we have access to some Sainsbury gift vouchers which can be used for food shopping. If you, or someone you know, would benefit from some of these please get in touch. FOODBANK DONATION POINT We are now collecting donations of food which we will deliver to the Brent foodbank. If you would like to help we are setting up a donation point at 11 Charterhouse Avenue, Wembley, HA0 3DH. Please select from this list of urgently needed food items: Rice (500g & 1kg Please), Rice & Sponge Puddings, Tinned Meat, Tinned Fruit, Instant Noo-dles, Instant Pasta, Long Life Milk, Long Life Juice, Bar Soap, Shampoo, Cleaning Products (Dish Liquid, Laundry Powder, Cleaning Sprays etc). The SVP were able to react to the Covid-19 pandemic quickly because we exist-ed before and we will still be here after-wards. There is much work to do at present but when this is all over there will still be plenty to do, people will still need our help. If you need assistance or if you are feel-ing isolated and just want to have a chat with a friendly person over the phone, or if you are interested in join-ing the SVP please contact Theresa or Michael Frain on 0208 900 0250 or 0775 3654 154. SUNDAY READINGS & PRAYERS

Entrance antiphon Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard; proclaim to the ends of the earth: The Lord has freed his people, alleluia. Collect Grant, almighty God, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these days of joy, which we keep in honour of the risen Lord, and that what we relive in remembrance we may always hold to in what we do. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. First Reading: Acts 6:1-7 Philip went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoic-ing in that town. When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, and they went down there, and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit, for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The word of the Lord. Responsorial psalm: 65 R/. Cry out with joy to God all the earth. 1. Cry out with joy to God, all the earth, O sing to the glory of his name. O render him glorious praise. Say to God: “How tremendous your deeds!” R./ 2. Before you all the earth shall bow; shall sing to your name! Come and see the works of God, tremendous his deeds among men. R./ 3. He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the river dry-shod. Let our joy then be in him; he rules for ever by his might. R./ 4. Come and hear, all who fear God. I will tell what he did for my soul. Blessed be God who did not reject my prayer nor withhold his love from me. R./

Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-9 Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts, and always have your an-swer ready for people who ask you the reason for the hope that you all have. But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander you when you are living a good life in Christ may be proved wrong in the accusations that they bring. And if it is the will of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong. Why, Christ himself, innocent though he was, had died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life. The Word of the Lord. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, Alleluia! Jesus said: “If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Fa-ther will love him, and we shall come to him”, Alleluia! Gospel: John 14;1-12 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘If you love me you will keep my commandments. I shall ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever, that Spirit of truth whom the world can never receive since it neither sees nor knows him; but you know him, because he is with you, he is in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come back to you. In a short time the world will no longer see me; but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will understand that I am in my Father and you in me and I in you. Anybody who receives my commandments and keeps them will be one who loves me; and anybody who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him and show myself to him.’ Prayer over the Offerings May our prayers rise up to you, O Lord, together with the sacrificial offerings, so that, purified by your graciousness, we may be con-formed to the mysteries of your mighty love. Through Christ our Lord. Communion Antiphon Jn 14: 15-16 If you love me, keep my commandments, says the Lord, and I will ask the Father and he will send you another Paraclete, to abide with you for ever, alleluia. Prayer after Communion Almighty ever-living God, who restore us to eternal life in the Resurrection of Christ, increase in us, we pray, the fruits of this paschal Sacrament and pour into our hearts the strength of this saving food. Through Christ our Lord.
