ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

TRUE PROPHETS

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Je-sus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The whole his-tory of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held posi-tions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert tempta-tion confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true proph-ets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Pastor’s Message

ON TO THE NEXT 75 YEARS! The 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, January 14th, found us closing out the year-long 75th Anniversary of this dynamic parish. After the grace-filled Mass, there was an abundance of food brought together by so many people. It really was a celebration of gratitude to God for all that’s been accomplished here at St. James, along with a commit-ment to move forward into the future full of hope. Many THANKS to all the members of the 75th Anniversary Committee, the parish staff and the scores of volunteers who made this Jubilee Year possible, all under the guidance of co-chairs Kaweeda Adams and Brenda Dumas. Each month we celebrated a different portion of all that makes St. James such a vibrant parish. This year went by extremely fast!

Now we move on to our future. Not one of us knows what God has in store for us, but with God, all things are possible. I, for one, hope and pray that I can remain the pastor at St. James for as long as possible (I’m hoping some of you might feel the same way!). This past year has given me a renewed appreciation for the history of this parish family and how we are essential to the life of the Diocese of Las Ve-gas. I know my priesthood has been enhanced by being a part of this community of faith, and what an absolute privilege it has been to be among you during this important milestone in the life of this parish.

But, we’ve got some work ahead of us. None of us are getting any younger, and some are getting pretty tired. We need to continue to work together to bring younger people into our worshipping and wel-coming assembly as we affirm the importance of their presence and support them in their struggles. We need to face the reality that even though our Diocese is blessed with some new seminarians, there are not enough to replace those priests who will retire or get sick or die. We need to be instruments of healing for those who have left our church or have been hurt in one way or another by someone in the church. None of us are perfect, but together we can move forward to a continued hope for our future.

I don’t have the answers, but together we will listen to the voice of God and follow. So, I look forward to beginning the next 75 years with you. Just imagine what God may be asking of all of us for our future!

REST IN PEACE, +FATHER LUKE Last weekend I was in Chicago for the wake and Mass of Christian Burial of +Fr. Luke Poczworowski, OFM Conv. +Fr. Luke was a member of the Conventual Franciscans of St. Bonaventure Province, the community to which I belonged from 1979 until 2013 when I was finally incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of Las Vegas. When I first entered the Franciscan Order after high school, +Fr. Luke was my first spiritual director. Years later he would also be my pastor for the first six years of my priesthood at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Rockford, Illinois. The times in between, he would be the Minister Provincial of the friars from 1987-1994. It was during those times that he assigned me to various ministries in Milwaukee, WI, Dearborn Heights, MI, Chicago, IL and Peoria, IL. +Fr. Luke’s funeral gave me the opportunity to re-connect with many individuals from those places that I haven’t seen for years.

In addition, I was able to re-connect with many friars I have come to know and love over the years. While I do miss them, I know that I’m in the right place now. One of the friars who is a new pastor said to me, “Jim, I’ll never complain about pastors again!” His new experi-ences gave him a new appreciation of what we pastors have to deal with. Then he said, “You know what’s the worst part of parish life? The staff! And those complaining parishioners too!”

“Well,” I replied, “I guess I must be in the right places because I have great staffs, and the complaining parishioners are few, and some-times they even have something legitimate to complain about! I really am blessed with both of my parishes.”

And so, it was +Fr. Luke’s passing and the experience of those few days in Chicago, which helped me reaffirm that I’m in the right place right now. How God gets us where he wants us is always a mystery. I know that my 34 years with the Conventual Franciscan Friars have helped form me into the priest I am today (with my continued faults and failings as well). I also have a renewed appreciation for the great staffs and wonderful parishioners of St. James the Apostle and St. John Neumann.

The day before I left for Chicago, I started to feel a sinus infection coming on. My doctor prescribed the usual Z-pac, but the infection was a little bit stronger than the antibiotics. So, my return found me in bed for a couple of days, days I really couldn’t afford to lose. Hopefully by the time you read this, I’ll be way on the road to recov-ery!

ST. JAMES’ GOSPEL CHOIR ROCKED ST. JOHN NEUMANN! Last Saturday, January 20th, found the Gospel Choir of St. James the Apostle ministering at St. John Neumann’s 4:00PM Mass. I was so sad that the funeral took me away from being present. But, from everything I’ve heard it was a great experience! Someone even told me that “even those who regularly leave Mass early stayed until the very end!”

So, a big thank you to Susan Briare, director of the Gospel Choir, Bob Lynch, accompanist, and the members of St. James Gospel Choir for helping St. John Neumann lift their hearts and voices to God in praise. Believe me, this won’t be the last time SJN will be graced with the talents of St. James the Apostle!

Am I not the most blessed pastor with these two great parishes?

Peace always,

Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor
