Stewardship

“But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back.” (Luke 6:35)

Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion will put us on the path to holiness.

Please extend a warm welcome to Fr. Matt Schmitz this weekend at St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s while Fr. Tom is at a conference this week.

OUR NORTHLAND DIOCESE (OND) 2019 READER SURVEY:

During the months of February and March, every person who receives Our Northland Diocese in their mailbox or reads OND news online is invited to offer comments – positive and negative – in a reader survey! The feedback will be used to aid the continuing evolution of the publication. OND Staff and Board of Directors want to know your level of satisfaction with the print design, commentary columns and how the publication is living out its mission to publish Good News for furthering and strengthening the reign of God in the Diocese of Crookston! The survey is 20 questions long and should only take a few minutes of your time. Visit www.crookston.org/ondsurvey to learn more and participate!

Fr. Tom’s Desk Adult Bible Study will resume Monday, March 11. The focus of this 5 week study is titled No Greater Love and will walk us through the Passion Narratives of the gospels. The presentations were filmed in the Holy Land (scenery) and there are several commentators who will share insights into the background of the sacred texts. Our sessions will again be on Mondays, March 11, 18, 25 & April 1, 8 at 10:30 and 6:00. Each video presentation is 30 minutes. Lent is a wonderful opportunity to do something special for our spiritual life and I hope many will come out for this biblical reflection on the events of our eternal salvation. See you in church next weekend!

Oil for your Lamp Alright, who has been measuring out the snow, apparently you have been using a rather large unit of measurement….. The Gospel message can be taken many ways, gifts given are not always measured with $$$ signs. Yes, it just so happens that the DAA envelopes just came out, and the Diocese can use your donations for lots of good things, but, many do not give financially to the appeal for many different reasons. This past Tuesday evening we had our monthly community meal at St. Peters. The sign-up sheet for help had 3 names on it as of Tuesday morning, yet at the meal, there were plenty of bodies helping out in all areas. To me that is a sign that you as a parish understand the concept of giving of your time and talents as well as your treasure. Sara McCloud is always amazed at your response and willingness to help; the same holds true at most funeral dinners. There is one small fly in the ointment however. Are you passing the desire to serve others on to the youth? Many who serve at parish functions also ask where the youth are. Yes, they see some of them helping at a dinner, but they are constantly asking why we do not have more Mass servers, ushers, musicians, or readers that are youth. Yes the youth are busy with school activities, but not on Sunday mornings. “Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.” Let those words fill your thoughts this week; your lamps will burn brightly. “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” (Saint Teresa of Kolkata)

Shepherding Them Home Prayershops We have a number of prayershops around the diocese. They include: March 2: Mentor March 23: Crookston. Each of these sessions are on Saturday from 9:00-4:00 and hosted by the local parish. If you know of people in your parishes who have loved ones who have fallen away from the Church, please encourage them to attend one of these sessions. Other sessions will be offered next fall and into next spring. Please contact the local parish for registration information.

Disposal of Blessed Palms They can be burned, then scatter the ashes to the wind, or they can be cut into smaller pieces, then buried in the garden as mulch. They can be returned to the church and one of these methods will be done here. The blessed palms, as any blessed object, should not be discarded in the garbage and then forgotten.

Season of Lent Observance of Fasting and Abstinence

Observe the days of FAST which are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. (Ages 18-59) This means to refrain from eating and has been defined as that our three meals combined are less food than what we would normally consume at our largest meal of the day and no in-between snacking. One is also “exempt” from fasting due to medical conditions. If one is physically able to observe fasting that person should consider seriously doing it. Observe the Fridays of Lent as days of ABSTINENCE. (Ages 14 – death) This is the custom of not eating meat (meat defined as the flesh of warm-blooded animals). Fish has always been a great substitute for meat. However, one must contemplate whether crab, lobster and other expensive seafood really fulfill the intent of this discipline. Abstinence invites us to practice simplicity in our lives. There are many meatless meals that satisfy hunger.

Faith, Wellness, and You February is low vision awareness month. Currently, 4.2 million Americans ages 40 and older are visually impaired. By 2030, when the last baby boomers turn 65, this number is projected to reach 7.2 million, with 5 million having low vision. If you have vision loss, there is help. Ask your provider about vision rehabilitation. Vision rehabilitation can help people with vision loss to maximize their remaining vision and maintain their independence and quality of life by teaching them to move safely in home, continue to read, cook and do other activities, and find resources and support. You can contact your parish nurse at: Diane 218-255-1270 and Tiffany at 218-252-8227.

2019DAA We have received many gifts, pledges and

sustaining commitments for the 2019 Diocesan Annual Appeal. Thank you! If you haven’t done so, it isn’t too late. You may use an envelope and prayer card located at the end of pews, in the Gathering space at St. Peter’s or in the back of the church at St. Mary’s or use the one you have received at home. You may make a gift by using a personal check or cash, by credit card or automatic withdrawal from your checking account. We prefer that pledges are paid over the course of ten months if possible. Consider increasing your gift this year by 5% or 10% if you haven’t increased your gift for several years. For questions about online giving and sustaining gifts, (a highly recommended method which conserves the environment, human and other resources) contact Renee Tate at [email protected] or call the Chancery toll free 1-855-397-8252. Scan the QR code to go to www.crookston.org/daa for more information about the 2019DAA. The opportunity to build up the Body of Christ in the Diocese of Crookston is here for all of us!
