Next week’s readings - Ordinary Time: 2nd Sunday Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 Psalm 40 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 John 1:29-34

Today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas season within our liturgical year. Tomorrow will be the first Monday of Ordinary Time. Today’s feast also marks a transition in the life of Jesus from his quiet, family life in Nazareth to the active years of his public ministry.

If we’re lucky, the Christmas season has been a time spent with family and friends, growing closer to Emmanuel, God with us. Now we are invited to begin to integrate what we have experienced throughout this holy season. Have we been touched in a new and different way, and how can we bring what we have experienced into our everyday lives? We often forget that in the waters of our own baptism we were anointed priest, prophet, and king, and assured of our own “belovedness” as a daughter or son of the living God. How is God calling us to live out this belovedness in our own public ministry?

Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home) Excerpts from Chapter One – What Is Happening to Our Common Home IV. Decline in the Quality of Human Life & the Breakdown of Society, continued There are signs that the growth of the past two centuries has not always led

to an improvement in the quality of life. Furthermore, when media and the digital world become omnipresent, their influence can stop people from learning how to live wisely, to think deeply and to love generously.

In this context, the great sages of the past run the risk of going unheard amid the noise

and distractions of an information overload. True wisdom, as the fruit of self-examination, dialogue and generous encounter between persons, is not acquired by a mere accumulation of data.

Social Concerns

Thank you from High Point High School! Once again, St. John the Baptist parishioners have contributed such a generous donation of winter coats, hats, gloves, and sweaters to our immigrant students who are spending their first winter in the United States. We have over 300 newcomer students this year, and your faithful support allows us to offer a free coat to those who are neediest. You all provided so much, and we're especially appreciative of the efforts of Jim McGarrity for his help in past years and for facilitating the outreach, to Alicia and George Urban and to Richard McGinnis for transporting all the coats over to our school.

Please know that these efforts of your parishioners are so greatly appreciated by the students and by those of us who are working with them! If any portion of this email, including additional individuals to thank can be printed in the bulletin, that would be great, as we want to be sure that all know of our gratitude.

Wishing you all a 2020 full of blessings, from Beth Hood, LCSW-C, ESOL Intervention Specialist, High Point High School

Community Service We seek simply to serve those in need in our community. Listed below is a recap of activities we provided this past season: Advent Opportunities Parishioners are given various opportunities to serve those in need in our community. This year: - Over 30 families were helped with food for Christmas dinner, clothing, boots, toys, and other items. A last minute note was sent out and parishioners responded quickly and generously. In addition to gifts, toys, gift cards, etc., over $1,400 was donated to provide these families with a special Christmas. Thank you notes have been coming in steadily. Some families were brought to tears when they saw the gifts they received. - 317 Gift Backpacks with toiletries, hats, gloves, and scarfs, and small gifts for children and adults. - Over 150 new or gently used warm blankets were taken to Shepherd’s Table by our Girl Scout Troop. Christmas Miracle 2019 One family of 8 children ranging in ages 2 months to 15, arrived in Silver Spring December 22 from Trinidad. They lost their mother and all of their belongings during Tropical Storm Karen this past Summer. They have an aunt who lives in Silver Spring who agreed to take them in, but had nothing prepared for them for Christmas. Through the generosity of parishioners, we were able to give toys for all the children, clothing, bedding, food and Target gift cards. We will be helping them once they are settled. Alternative Gift Catalogue Participants selected a local agency or organization to support via donations. This year we raised over $5,400 for the participating agencies and programs: C4 $ 330 Eastern Montgomery Emergency Assistance Network (EMEAN) $ 450 Gabriel Network $ 175 Haiti Sister Parish $1,625 Midcounty United Ministries (MUM) $ 675 Ministries United Silver Spring Takoma Park (MUSST) $ 200 Shepherd’s Table $ 635 Spanish Catholic Center Clinic $ 300 St. Camillus Food Pantry $ 315 Torture Abolition & Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) $ 320 Veterans’ Supportive Services $ 380 Colesville Council of Community Congregations (C4) Our local interfaith coalition helps the needy through the Clothes Closet, Baby Closet, Toy distribution at Christmas, and School Supplies distribution in late summer. This year, in addition to providing toys for over 900 clients, they also provided toys and gift sacks to two additional churches and three organizations. SJB parishioners sorted donations and stocked shelves for client shopping and the toy distribution.

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. Jesus, fully human, submits to baptism to be like us in all things. The incarnation, God in human flesh, does not mean God in human wrapping as if God was pretending to be human. In Jesus, God submits to being fully human in all aspects and that includes our limits. The baptism of Jesus, as told by Matthew, reflects this truth. God shows solidarity with humanity.

The incarnation is tied to solidarity, in particular to solidarity – to sharing life – with the poor. God joins us in our poverty. Last week we were introduced to a long-forgotten story from the early church about a hidden, anonymous holy man who was from Rome but lived as a stranger and poor person in Edessa, Syria. This unknown saint displays this solidarity. He lived with the poor.

Let’s review the story of the anonymous man of God. The holy man was from the rich, noble class in Rome. He left his family on the day they arranged a luxurious marriage for him. He slipped away on a ship and found his way to Edessa. The holy man spent the whole of his days praying in a church. In the evening, he would beg for some food at the door of the same church. Still, he ate only one meal a day. Any food he received over his needs he gave away to the poor. He then stayed with the poor of Edessa, spending time with and sleeping among them. But, when they slept, he would rise and pray, against a wall, making a cross with his body. The holy man did this for many years. He also fully adopted a life with the poor of Edessa. The story says, “He did not dwell apart from the poor.”

The official story tells us that the hidden holy man “was triumphant and received a crown because of his poverty and toil for Christ’s sake…he despised all the pleasures of this transitory world.” The man of God chose to be poor. Further, he embraced “not ordinary poverty, but [one] of shame and reproach.” His life was one of abnegation and abasement. In other words, the people of Edessa regarded such poverty as

humiliating, rendering one a worthless, no-good bum. Intriguingly, the holy man never reveals his identity. He accepts the anonymity, hiddenness, and lowliness of the

poor. Years later, the holy man gets sick, dies, and is buried with strangers unceremoniously. Besides the church custodian who discovered his identity but kept it secret, no one knew who the holy man was. Why should we accept lowliness? It cuts through our ego delusions, especially the idea/value of self-reliance. We cannot do it on our own. We need help. Ultimately, the delusion of self-reliance and utter independence reflects the more basic lie that we are separate from God and so must rely on ourselves. Jesus tells us the humble ones will be exalted and those who are last will be first.

Lowliness and the acceptance of our weakness open us to God.

This point about lowliness, solidarity in poverty, and abjectness reflects a crucial difference between the way of the Gospel and religion as we normally understand the word. Typically, and conventionally, we assume that to be holy means we must be heroic. We think being a saint means we have to do extraordinary things: extreme fasting, going to the ends of the earth in missionary zeal, or dedicating our whole lives to serving the poorest of the poor. A fascinating feature of the story of the anonymous holy man is that he does nothing extreme or extraordinary. Unlike all the other stories of holy people from the time, he does nothing out of the ordinary. He only accepts lowliness and prays.

Heroic religion expects not only the extraordinary but also perfection. But it is the trademark of the follower of Jesus to embrace lowliness and to shun every exalted position. One is to avoid prominence in word, action, or behavior. Without feeling superior to or even comparing oneself to others, the follower of Jesus – like the hidden holy man of Edessa – strives to embrace a low and humble way of life. This may mean accepting no recognition for doing something great, and it may mean not even claiming that you did something great. So, it may mean being anonymous. It goes against the grain of a society that demands we must command attention and seek recognition. Instead, in imitation of the God who emptied the divine self to become human, the follower of Jesus ignores self.

Mass For Life St. John the Baptist Knights of Columbus is once again offering rides to the National Mall for the January 24 March for Life. We meet at 10 a.m. in front of the Elizabeth and Mary statue in the courtyard for a picture, and depart at 10:15 a.m. for the Mall. We return at 3 p.m. via Metro to the Glenmont station, where we are again met by the Knights and transported back to SJB. There will be a sign-up sheet on the Knight’s table in the Hall following Sunday Masses for those wanting a ride. Alternatively, you may contact Joe Peters (301-351-2481, [email protected]), Bill Legato (301-622-0868, [email protected]) or Rob Farrell (240-595-2408, [email protected]) to reserve a space. Please respond early so that an adequate number of drivers can be arranged. For those who have not yet joined the March, it is a very uplifting experience, where marchers of all ages come from different states and countries in support of Life. Particularly noteworthy is the number of youths present. For more information see https://marchforlife.org/national-march-for-life/ .

Bible Study on Saturday Mornings "If the Psalm prays, do you too pray, if it laments, so do you too, if it renders thanks, so do you also rejoice with it; if it hopes, so you too; if it speaks in the accents of fear, do you also tremble with it; for all that is written therein is meant to be a mirror for us." St. Augustine, Sermons on Psalm 30

The Psalter, a collection of 150 Israelite religious lyrics, is divided into 5 books. The collections can be classified as hymns of praise, prayers of supplication or lament, of thanksgiving, of confidence or trust, and of wisdom. Many were compositions for the royal family of David and used as processional and entrance liturgies.

Beginning Saturday, February 15, an eight-week session on the Psalms will be offered for exploration and understanding. There also will be an emphasis on praying with these ancient poems. When you hear or sing them at Mass, they will speak more clearly to you as you pray.

If you are interested in joining Bible Study on 8 Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Lyon Ctr., please contact Alicia Urban, 301-879-4368 or [email protected].
