Stewardship “It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him
alone shall you serve.” (Matthew 4:10) Tempted between the riches and power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things. Ask God how he is calling you to serve.

Father Tom’s Desk Did you know? Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. In the romantic languages “forty days” is still used (Italian: quaresima) to name this time of the church year. Our English word “Lent” comes from the Anglo–Saxon word lencten, which means “lengthen” and refers to the lengthening days of
“spring." Originally, “Lent” was nothing more than the English name of the season between winter and summer, the season when the snow melts and the flowers bloom. German and Dutch have the same word, but with slightly different spelling. In German, “Lenz” is the poetic word for “spring.” Eventually the
name of “Lent” was replaced by the adoption of the Roman calendar where the month was dedicated to the god of war - Mars (March). But its name remained attached to the Christian period of preparing for Easter (which normally is the month of March). Now you know. As we enter this holy season I once again ask you to raise your consciousness about the spiritual disciplines that ought to be the foundation of our discipleship - prayer, fasting and alms-giving. These expectations of the Lord Jesus, found in the gospel of Matthew, invite us in special ways to open ourselves up to the needs of others. Instead of only looking at “giving up something” for Lent, a better approach would be to ask yourself, “What can I add to my spiritual life?” Give it a try.
Oil for your Lamp The temptations of Jesus, in particular the second temptation, is where we actually hear the devil use scripture (psalm 91) in such a way that seems to be in complete agreement with what the psalm is saying. Satan is a master of deception; he uses every possible trick to ensnare us. After his first success in the garden, he has continued to work his evil tricks. So often I have noticed that it is when we are at a point that we think we are helping others that Satan also steps right alongside to lend his assistance. Satan is not bashful when it comes to working with others as long as the ends justify his means. There are many examples of what started out as a good thing and ended in a disaster . . . coincidence? The Church gives us the season of Lent to help us focus on reconciliation with others and with Jesus. Beware of Satan and his trickery. If you happen to stumble and feel yourself falling back into the arms of Satan, take a breath then quickly ask Mary to “pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death”. I guarantee that Satan will allow you to fall to the ground instead of softening your fall; since of all of God’s creatures, Mary is the only one who can safely intercede for all of us every time we ask. “To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.”

Faith, Wellness, and You Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and heredity. Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those over 75 have difficulty hearing. Here are some tips you can use when talking with someone who has a hearing problem: In a group, include people with hearing loss in the conversation. Find a quiet place to talk to help reduce background noise, especially in restaurants and at social gatherings. Stand in good lighting and use facial expressions or gestures to give clues. Face the person and speak clearly. Maintain eye contact. Speak a little more loudly than normal, but don’t shout. Try to speak slowly, but naturally. Do not hide your mouth, eat, or chew gum while speaking. Contact your parish nurse Diane at 218-255-0803 and Tiffany at 218-252-8227.

And please send in your prayer requests whether or not you are able to make a gift. Greetings from Kinship
We have a great opportunity for a matching grant. Kinship could potentially receive $7,500 that would assist us in reaching even more youth in our communities. The catch is that we need to raise a minimum of $2,500 in order to receive the matching funds. Our timeline to acquire these funds is April 1. We're reaching out to help us reach this goal! To donate, mail your donation directly to the Kinship office, PO Box 282, Park Rapids, MN 56470, or call 218-732-0058.Thank you for supporting Kinship and youth in our communities!
