Williams Dear Parishioners, As we read todays account of St Luke concerning the visit of Jesus to the house of his friends Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus, it is not hard to see the possibility of conflict between the two sisters as Martha is busy preparing the meal and Mary seemingly sits at the feet of Jesus and does not offer to help in the work. To make matters worse it seems that Jesus declines encourage Mary to help her sister Martha in all the work. The gospel story may initially seem a little unfair but many commentators will tell us the purpose of the story is to remind us of the two aspects of service, activity and active listening to the Word of God, sometimes referred to as contemplation. Perhaps we might even say that the activity of Martha as she bustles about is akin to our practice of saying many prayers, expressing our needs and our thanks and our petitions for the needs of ourselves and others. This is in response to the command of Jesus, Ask and you shall receive’. But as we look at the story a little more closely we can also see that Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus and taking in all that he has to say is also a profound form of prayer. It too is a response to the word of Jesus When you pray, do not babble on with many words…’ This is the prayer of listening, when we attune ourselves to letting God speak to us in our normal and daily surroundings, and allows him to fill us with his words, his challenges, his vision of our needs. In all of our lives there is, and should be, space both for godly activity through service and kindness of others, but also space for a quiet sitting in the presence of God without too much to say on our part but with a quiet determination to listen to God. We will, hopefully, not hear voices or see visions but rather become aware of voice and activity of God in our lives through being given an awareness and an openness to see the world and its people through the eyes of a loving and forgiving saviour. Often we can be so busy saying prayers or being so engaged in doing good works that we unwittingly neglect to give ourselves time to just sit in the presence of God and allow ourselves the luxury of simply listening to what he might like to whisper in our hearts. Mary and Martha, both have something important to tell us.
