Loos Dear Parishioners, Todays gospel is St Lukes account of the healing of the ten lepers by Jesus, a story that we have heard often and, I have no doubt, understood without too much difficulty. But the emphasis of the gospel is not on the healing power of Jesus not on the mystery of suffering in our lives but rather on the reaction of the ten men who were cured. We remember that ten were made clean but only one returned to say thank you to Jesus and he was a foreigner. We may think harshly of the nine who were Jewish and did not return but perhaps we are being unkind in our judgement? The nine Jewish lepers went off to the Temple to show themselves to the priests as the Law prescribed and to pray, but the foreigner had no temple to go to and no priests to report to and so it was easier for him to return and thank Jesus. But the whole story is really about the gratitude of the foreigner and his willingness to return to Jesus and to express his appreciation and gratitude. The account is beautifully put forth in the gospel and makes us really aware of the necessity of being grateful to God for all the blessings which we may take for granted in our lives. The fact that in the story nine men did not return to say thanks, only emphasises the failure in our lives when we neglect to exercise the gift of gratitude and to acknowledge that not only to God but also to those around us who care and look out for us every day. It is so easy to take people and their generosity for granted especially in our families and among our friends and neighbours. It is the small acts of kindness on a daily basis that are like jewels in our lives. They shine brightly even when we barely advert to them because they have become part of our everyday existence. They are akin to the very ordinary blessings which we so easily take for granted such as our health, our extended years, our children and grandchildren or our parents and grandparents. The old saying goes familiarity breeds contemptwhich simply reflects that sometimes the most important things in life are not sufficiently appreciated. As we gather to celebrate Mass or Eucharist it is good to remind ourselves that the word Eucharistactually means Thanksgivingand we gather to give thanks to God for his great generosity to us in so many ways not least the gift of our Faith and our Sacraments. Dear Parishioners,

Today’s gospel is St Luke’s account of the healing of the ten lepers by Jesus, a story that we have heard often and, I have no doubt, understood without too much difficulty. The old saying goes “familiarity breeds contempt” which simply reflects that sometimes the most important things in life are not sufficiently appreciated.

As we gather to celebrate Mass or Eucharist it is good to remind ourselves that the word ‘Eucharist’ actually means ‘Thanksgiving’ and we gather to give thanks to God for his great generosity to us in so many ways not least the gift of our Faith and our Sacraments.

God bless
