WHAT’S IN ONE’S APPEARANCE

Humans see and judge by appearances, but God looks into the heart, and there finds the real person. God’s standards are not superficial, as are so many of the standards of the world. It is not age, beauty, or physical strength that is important; it is not social position or religious role that is preferred. God chooses whom God chooses. God saw in David, the insignificant shepherd, the potential for being the chief shepherd of his people. The man who was born blind became the one through whom others would see the mighty works of God. Yet, neither young David nor the man in the gospel made the initial step; each simply responded with openness to God’s choice of him. By what criteria do we judge others? Do we consider some people too insignificant for greatness? Are we overly concerned with status? Do we categorize people according to the disease or physical limitation that they must endure? Do we sometimes blame them for their disability? Do our eyes perceive life in accord with the standards of a materialistic, body-orientated, pleasure-seeking society? Or do we look into the other’s heart, as God does?

Next week’s scripture insights:

Readings for Sunday, March 22, 2020

Fourth Sunday of Lent: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6–7, 10–13a Ps 23:1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6 Eph 5:8–

14 Jn 9:1–41 or 9:1, 6–9, 13–17, 34–38

God’s ways of seeing are not our ways, we hear in today’s First Reading. Jesus illustrates this in the Gospel—as the blind man comes to see and the Pharisees are

made blind. The blind man stands for all humanity. “Born totally in sin” he is made a new creation by the saving power of Christ.

As God fashioned the first man from the clay of the earth (see Genesis 2:7), Jesus gives the blind man new life by anointing his eyes with clay (see John 9:11). As God breathed the spirit of life into the first man, the blind man is not healed until he washes in the waters of Siloam, a name that means “Sent.” Jesus is the One “sent” by the Father to do the Father’s will (see John 9:4; 12:44). He is the new source of life-giving water—the Holy Spirit who rushes upon us in Baptism (see John 4:10; 7:38-39). This is the Spirit that rushes upon God’s chosen king David in today’s First Reading. A shepherd like Moses before him (see Exodus 3:1; Psalm 78:70-71), David is also a sign pointing to the good shepherd and king to come—Jesus (see John 10:11). The Lord is our shepherd, as we sing in today’s Psalm. By his death and Resurrection, He has made a path for us through the dark valley of sin and death, leading us to the verdant pastures of the kingdom of life, the Church. In the restful waters of Baptism, He has refreshed our souls. He has anointed our heads with the oil of Confirmation and spread the Eucharistic table before us, filling our cups to overflowing. With the once-blind man we enter His house to give God the praise, to renew our vow: “I do believe, Lord.” “The Lord looks into the heart,” we hear today. Let Him find us, as Paul advises in today’s Epistle, living as “children of light”—trying always to learn what is pleasing to our Father.

Thought to consider this Week: The story of the man born blind is a perfect choice for the Lenten season. During this season we are invited once again to open our eyes to Jesus; to step out of darkness and into the light; to look towards the future with hope and not despair. When we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at the Easter vigil, we celebrate the coming of the Light of the World into our lives. This annual call to turn away from darkness and walk in the light is a powerful and poetic call to focus our lives on the way of Jesus.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Starts at 9:00 am on Friday, March 20 and continues to 4:30 PM on Saturday, March 21.

SIGN UP FOR A TIME OF PRAYER! Online at srol.org or in the church vestibule.

This time is for you. Come be with the Lord; He wants to spend time with you.

If you’ve been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Come meet some faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider it a privilege to get to know you. Our parish will once again begin a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment. These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. This first session is scheduled to begin on September 17 in the Parish Center.

Please give Deacon Gohde a call if you have questions or would like further information at 215-699-4617, or email [email protected]

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

“To celebrate the Gospel of life means to celebrate the God of life, the God who gives life…In every child which is born and in every person who lives or dies we see the image of God’s glory. We celebrate this glory in every human being, a sign of the living God, an icon of Jesus Christ.” (The Gospel of Life 84)

TIME FOR LISTENING

Most Blessed Sacrament Group Retreat April 17-19

Malvern Retreat House I think we can agree our lives are busy. Family, work, life in general. How much time do we spend with God building our relationship with him beyond perhaps a prayer upon rising, at a meal, or at bedtime? When you pray, aren’t you asking for some sort of response? If you are like most, aren’t those prayers often one way? So, the question is - when do you give HIM an opportunity to answer?

Relationships take investment in time - and give and take conversation. How much time do you give to building your relationship with God through

listening? Is not your relationship with HIM worth some small commitment of time? BE STILL and know that I AM GOD. Sitting quietly in silence opens you to receive that response to your questions, concerns, and doubts you express in prayer. It doesn’t take long wise it can be the most important time.

This Retreat offers approximately 40 hours of opportunity to be still, to listen, to take time to have that two directional conversation with God, and to refresh your perspective on your relationship. Retreat fee: $250 per person. REGISTER at https://www.malvernretreat.com/events/most-blessed-sacrament-2/ ($50.00 deposit or pay in full) or call 610-644-0400 and make your reservation with the Most Blessed Sacrament Group.

Please put St. Rose of Lima in the special requests to be included in our parish group. For more information, call St. Rose parishioner Bob Viney at 215-527-4568 or 215-699-2375. Come join us!
