The End is Near The title of this article is one that gets most people’s attention. I am not predicting the end of

the world or the end of anything else. I am calling us to reflect upon the fact that our liturgical year is coming to an end. We will then begin a new cycle in the church year with the First Sunday of Advent

(December 1.) In many places of the world, this is harvest time and our Scripture readings focus on what is often called the “last things” (e.g. the end of the world, the final judgment.) We are winding

down our own year of 2019 and it is good to reflect upon what we have accomplished or not

accomplished, as well as to give thanks and praise to God for His presence to us this past year. We certainly will do that on Thanksgiving Day next week, but really we should be thanking our Lord

each and every day of our lives. We hear the Lord tell us about the final harvest, when the good will be separated from the bad, and God’s Kingdom will reign without end. Jesus tells us in today’s

Gospel, that the day and hour are known to God the Father alone.

We need not be afraid of the final judgment, if we have been living our lives as good and holy

people. Only those who have removed themselves from God’s presence need to be afraid. Our Lord reminds us of these “last things,” not to frighten us, but to encourage us to live now as His faithful

people. We are to take the Gospel seriously and live as Jesus lived. When the final judgment does take place, we can then be assured of a special dwelling place in heaven where there is perfect peace,

love and happiness.

Father David

Second Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is November 23/24

For over 43 million Americans, there is a thin line: between eviction and home, between hunger and health, between unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line is the Poverty Line. For a family of four, that line is $24,257 a year*.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. You are essential to its success. Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities across the United States. Please donate prayerfully and generously. Thank you.

Administration Ministries [ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]

Today’s readings paint a somewhat frightening picture of the end of time. The Gospel, however, ends with the assurance to faithful stewards that those who persevere will be saved.

The collection amount for November 9/10 is $13,693.40

Your generosity is greatly appreciated and needed!

“Whoever believes in me, even if they die, will live.”

It’s Time to Start Thinking about the St. James Christmas Basket Program!

It is time to start thinking about the Christmas Basket Program again! As is our tradition, we hope to serve 200+ needy families with a beautiful Christmas! Family Selection begins this weekend. Gifts are due by December 5th and 6th. Please stop by our table in the narthex this weekend and adopt a family in need to bless this Christmas.

Questions? Please email Dawn Fitzpatrick at [email protected] for more information.

Share Your Blessings at Thanksgiving

When the pilgrims settled in America, they celebrated a meal with the Native Americans, giving thanks for the bountiful harvest. The turkey became a symbol of that first Thanksgiving feast. Fast forwarding to the 21st century, America is now made up of many different ethnic groups, each giving thanks according to their culture.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry goal is to provide complete Thanksgiving Meals of choice to those struggling to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Your contributions will enable the pantry to assist those requesting help. If you know anyone unable to provide a Thanksgiving meal for their family, please have them contact the pantry at 630-469-8668. For more information, see our poster board located in the narthex.

The members of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry are grateful for the strong support it continues to receive from the St. James community. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

The accompanying picture shows Grand Knight Vinnie Roman receiving the Columbian Award on behalf of Council #9806 from District Deputy Steward Mattson. This service award is given to Councils who have exemplified commitments to the Faith, Family, Community, and Life Programs of the Knights of Columbus as demonstrated by their volunteer hours.

The other two pictures show Tootsie Roll Chairman Ray Klein delivering checks to Roger Cave of Parent Alliance Employment Project and to Heidi Seabloom (along with some of the residents of the group homes) of Stars Family Services. These two organizations are both involved with serving the disabled community in our area. Help for the handicapped has been a long-standing tradition for the Knights and the receipts from this year’s Tootsie Roll drive go directly to such organizations.

Please be aware of the Knights bi-annual Blood Drive to be held on the Saturday morning following Thanksgiving Day (Saturday, 11/30). This is a weekend when blood supplies have been traditionally low. Please consider volunteering to give blood at this event.

As shown by the above, the Knights are involved with many volunteer opportunities around St. James the Apostle Parish. If you are a male and over the age of 18, please consider joining us as we strive to enhance God’s Kingdom here at St. James.

Diocesan Events

Diocesan Missions to the Sucre, Bolivia – Are You Being Called?

Imagine this scene: Our day starts with Mass at 7:00 A.M. at the Sister’s chapel. After a short walk back to Hostal Sucre we enjoy breakfast. As breakfast finishes the medical and dental team loads up the bus to head out to the barrios clinic. Members of the construction team gather their gloves and backpacks for another day of building and painting. The Hostal becomes quiet once again, waiting for the sound of tired, but happy and content missioners when everyone returns at the end of the day. • Can you see this image in your mind? • Does it stir something in your heart? • Is there something in your gut wanting to be part of the scene? The Spirit may be calling you to mission. Partnership In Mission is pleased to announce the next formation of the medical/construction/outreach mission team to Sucre, Bolivia. Please note, we will not be fielding a surgical team for the 2020 mission. We want to take this hiatus as we study the changing landscape of mission in Latin America and work with our partners at Christ of the Americas Hospital in developing a renewed vision for an effective and impactful collaborative ministry that will carry us forward in the years to come. The mission goes to serve the poorest of the poor. This mission will leave on April 18th and return May 2nd, 2020. The medical team needs the following: Pediatricians and/or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Family Practitioners, Internists, and Dentists to work with the clinic team. There is also a great need for Staff Nurses, especially with Spanish speaking ability. The medical team will also have opportunity to conduct seminars for local medical and nursing students and other members of the medical community. The ability for team members who can teach is a super plus. We are also looking for men and women who would like to partner with local families to build rooms and work in the outreach programs for the poor in the villages around Sucre. No special construction skills are needed, just willing hands and warm hearts. In addition to the people we need, we also ask for your prayers. An Information Meeting is Scheduled Join us on Thursday, November 21st, 2019 at 7:00 P.M. at the Blanchette Catholic Center, 16555 Weber Rd, Crest Hill, Illinois 60403. Mission Applications are available now at http://bit.ly/missionsapplsite All applications must be in by December 21st, 2019. The mission team will be selected the first week of January. For further information, please call 815 221-6251 or email [email protected] —OR—email parishioners Brent and Nancy Flynn who have participated in this mission in the past and will be returning next year: [email protected].
