The Birth of John The Baptist is a Solemnity! As I may have mentioned at some time or other, “Solemnities” in the Liturgical life of the Church are “super-feasts.” They are different from the daily liturgies which often do not have some special saint to commemorate. A solemnity usually has a “vigil” Eucharist which is celebrated the day before the actually solemnity. Obviously, the intent of the Church is that solemnities be celebrated with enthusi-asm, a Gloria, a Creed, three readings from the Bible, a special Preface (the prayer of praise to God which introduces the Eucharistic Prayer proper), and sometimes a special final blessing suited to the theme/saint of the feast. Solemnities break up the usual pattern of our daily celebrations. For that very reason, they cause us to pause and change the rhythm of our “liturgical dance.” That is, after all, what liturgy is: a dance. It is music and movements, special “costumes”, at times great pageantry. When a solemnity comes along which is not prefaced by a liturgical season, e.g. Advent or Lent or Easter, it causes me to ask: Why a solemnity for this person or mystery? That’s exactly what it’s intended to do. It should be, to borrow a rather trite phrase: a pause that refreshed us on our faith journey, an invitation to dance and sing and celebrate. Some people get upset when solemnities come in midweek. Perhaps with good reason, because they have to get to work or have some appointment to keep. For some, it’s “C’mon, be solemn in a hurry, Father! I have things to do! For others, it’s: “ I thought these weekday Masses were supposed to be half an hour or less! What’s the big deal today?!” The request: “Can’t you make it shorter, Father?” is inevitable. But when someone is really celebrating in a solemn way, no one seems to think of time, e.g. a wedding, a family picnic, a birthday party, even, strange to say, a wake or funeral. It is the essence of “solemnity” to be free from time constraints. We have a number of parish liturgical solemnities during which people do not seem to mind the time. Even a school graduation can last a long time without adverse effects on the people celebrating. John the Baptist. How does he rate a solemnity? Is there something the Church wants to tell us by giving John such a special feast? Is the solemnity an invitation to contemplation as well as celebration? Is it, perhaps, telling us something about ourselves; inviting us to ponder how I myself am called to be like John in the living out of my Catholic-Christian vocation? The only way to answer that is to take the time to celebrate the solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist and then take the extra time to contemplate the message of the solemnity for myself, for us as a parish. Ah, there’s the rub! Time to contemplate. Time has no reality in itself; it is of our own making. It is, after all, we who measure reality in terms of hours, min-utes, and days. On Our Rainforest Adventure

Event: Vacation Bible School Date: July 14th - 18th Where: Ahearn Activity Center Time: 9 am - Noon Ages: 4 - 9 Fee: $50 - 1 child $20 additional children All children ages 4 - 9 are welcome to attend our Rainforest Adventure Vacation Bible School the week of July 14th. Join us for a rainforest adventure program of faith - filled fun! Rainforest Adventure invites kids to share the good news of Jesus’ love for us by being caretakers of all that God has given us. At Rainforest Adventure you will: • hear stories about Jesus • make cool crafts • sing fun songs • play zany games • eat super snacks • make lots of new friends We promise to have lots of fun shar-ing God’s love with everyone! In the past, many of you have asked what we could use for Bible School. If any of you would like to donate something this year our station leaders could use the following items: • Rolls of Plastic Table Cloths –

Human Concerns

Elizabeth Ministry The Elizabeth Ministry reaches out to women who are pregnant, mourning the loss of a child either through stillbirth, miscarriage and abortion or women who are celebrating the birth of a child, maternal and adopted, etc. The ministry is called the Eliza-beth Ministry after the scripture story of the Visitation. This is a min-istry in which two women who have had a similar experience get to-gether. As the world is constantly moving and there is always so much to do, women and their issues often go unheard. There are so many emo-tions and questions that some women find that it would be nice to have someone to talk, cry and laugh with. Who better to have around than someone who has already gone through the ups and downs of being a new mom. Another woman who has also experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth, or the difficulties of the adoptive process and so on. This weekend we will be placing postcards in church for women who may be interested in the Elizabeth Ministry. The cards may be placed in the basket provided or taken home and mailed to the parish office. All contact and information is kept con-fidential. If you are interested in having a visit from an Elizabeth Minister or would like to become an Elizabeth Minister, please call Joyce Browne at the par-ish business office at 773.631.4127.
