I f it’s success you want, it’s wise to examine the professionals. Catch a glimpse of the Tour de France and you’ll immediately see hordes of lycra-clad men tucked safely behind sunglasses. But you won’t see Chanel or Gucci logos anywhere - cyclists need eyewear with technology that’s tailored precisely to cope with the demands of cycling.

G E T A G R I p The feet go on the pedals, the hands on the handlebars and the sunglasses on the face. That’s the idea anyway. Feet and hands can take care of themselves, but in order to keep your sunglasses in place you’ll need traction grip along the arms. And look out for grips that re-spond to perspiration too, like Oakley Unobtainium. The tackiness of Unobtainium increases when wet - so the more you sweat, the more your sunglasses will stay pinned in place.

S E E T H E R O A d Polarised lenses filter out the glare from sunlight and diminish the distrac-tions to your view. Glare from sunlight reflecting off the road in front can conceal threats and affect your performance, so a high quality lens is a must for the budding cyclist. But if you keep your view clear with polarised lenses you’ll have the advantage and stay competitive despite the sun’s best efforts to put you off your pace. Don’t make an amateur mistake and buy something that lacks qual-ity – professional cyclists swear by polarised lenses, so buy the professional standard. You’ll notice the difference.

m A k E A N I m p A C T Cycling sunglasses need to be impact-resistant. If the worst happens and you’re involved in an accident, the last thing you want is shards from a shattered lens in your eye. The most common objects extracted from eyes injured in a road accident are shards of glass, so it’s easy to see why lenses that don’t shatter are the safest option. Oakley Plutonite lenses pride themselves on never shattering, which is perfect - cycling sunglasses need to be impact resistant. The more durable the materials used in a pair of sunglasses, the longer they’ll last. And a longer lifespan means you’ll be getting your money’s worth.

I s running as simple as putting one foot in front of the other? Not quite. Pace, fitness and training all come into play if you’re in pursuit of the fastest time. And it’s the same with running sunglasses; it’s not as simple as finding a pair of glasses with shaded lenses. There’s a world of technology that can improve your running performance and make

the difference on the running track.

G E T A G R I p Running sunglasses need to stay exactly where they are if they’re going to last the distance. Eyewear that loses grip halfway through a marathon could spell disaster. Keep your sunglasses in place by buying sunglasses with traction grip running along the arms. The contact between rubber and the side of your head will assure a tight, tacky grip that will prove invaluable. Grip material like Oakley Unobtainium increases its tackiness in response to moisture - so the more you sweat, the tighter the sunglasses grip.

L I G H T LY d O E S I T Sports sunglasses need to be lightweight, so light you don’t notice you’re wearing them. If your sunglasses are bulky and cumbersome you’ll struggle to keep your head level and maintain a decent running posture. The lighter your sunglasses, the more imperceptible they’ll be and the fewer distractions you’ll face - it’s essential. Look out for curved, face-hugging lenses - they’ll enhance the distraction-beating qualities of your sunglasses by turning the wind and dust or debris away from your eyes.

S E E T H E R O A d Don’t forget the sunglasses that will give you the clearest view of the fin-ish line. Polarised lenses offer 100% UV protection - essential for good eye protection - and will eliminate the glare of the road or whatever surface your feet are beating down on. Lenses with low vision-distortion will benefit you too – Oakley lab test their lenses to ensure that light refraction is as small as possible, giving the wearer a view that’s as unhindered as possible. And if you want to unhinder your vision further, pick a frame with interchangeable lenses. Yellow lenses will aid your vision in low light and brown lenses will shield you from the worst the sun can throw at you.

O akley’s exciting new RadarLock does one thing very well. It meets the un-compromising demands of the best athletes in the world. It was designed so, and with a summer of athletics fast heading our way RadarLock brings top performance in a new light.

l It’s the SwitchLock technology here that shines as much as the athletes that wear this incredible performance frame. With RadarLock change to whichever of Oakley’s lenses you need to be the best, with the bullet speed of a 100m champion. And no hurdles. Just flick the SwitchLock lever on the temple.

l SwitchLock is designed to hold the frame in place without any pressure that can dis-tort ordinary lens changing systems. Then, as the weather dictates, change your lenses

at the flick of a switch. Available in two Radar lens shapes RadarLock’s semi-rimless style also means there is no frame to get in the way as you look down. RadarLock’s Polaric El-lipsoid lenses are cut from a single sheet, to prevent distortion even at the very edges. And it’s at the very edges that the best operate.

l Combined, these give you nothing less than a sweeping view of the world and the curve protects against side impacts too. Oakley Radar is already an Oakley bestseller and the new

SwitchLocked RadarLock takes the design to incredible levels of performance.

w ant to make waves in sailing? You’ll need to be quick on the water. Professional sailing is no gentle punt down a river – the world’s top sailors have to be in peak physical condition to clamber all over their vessel, constantly making adjustments to keep the boat on the fastest course. So there’s no time to pause

and fiddle with their sunglasses – the eyewear needs to be perfect from the start.

A N C H O R E d I N p L A C E Sailing isn’t a hands-free sport and professional sailors can’t afford to waste time playing with their eyewear. That’s why grip is so important. The Bollé Tempest is a great example of a frame that’s a perfect accessory for the competitive sailor – the Bollé Ther-mogrip strips running along the arms holds the frame securely against the wearer’s head. And it’s hydrophilic too – the grip material reacts to moisture and increases in tackiness. So the more you sweat, the more your sunglasses stay in place.

C R Y S T A L C L E A R Few surfaces reflect light as well as water. Life above the waves can involve a lot of squinting if the eyewear isn’t up to scratch. That’s why polarised lenses are essential. They filter the light reflected from the water’s surface and stop you suffering from the debilitating effects of glare. Maui Jim PolarisedPlus lens technology is a fantastic example of quality polarised lenses - they completely cut out glare while enhancing the colours, so your view of the action is both clearer and more vivid. You won’t miss a thing behind polarised lenses.

S T A Y d R Y Hydrophobic and oleophobic lens treatments are incredibly useful in competitive sailing. Any stray water droplets that land on your lenses will collect together and run off the lens, rather than blocking your vision and needing to be wiped off. The Oakley Flak Jacket is the ideal frame for the budding sailor – the lenses are coated with the Oakley Hydrophobic lens coating, preventing water from leaving streaks and sheens that can hinder vision. Even skin oils, fingerprints and lotions are easily wiped free, so don’t be afraid to get your hands (or sunglasses) dirty.

k eep the target in sight and you’ll make the shot. But what’s the use in lining up the crosshair if your sunglasses aren’t up to the task? With so much protective eyewear to choose from it can be tricky to hunt down the best gear. You need to be protect-ed, you need to feel comfortable and you need to see clearly. From your eyes to the

bullseye, the right equipment makes the difference

S T A Y S H I E L d E d Rule number one, as any shooting range will tell you, is safety first. When it comes to high velocity projectiles, your protective headgear needs to do exactly that – protect. But just how protective does eyewear need to be? The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) describes the Z-87.1 standard as the safety level that eyewear must meet to adequately shield the wearer. All Oakley lenses meet the durability levels required by ANSI Z-87.1, so something like the Oakley Flak Jacket makes for superb protection from stray pellets.

T A R G E T I N S I G H T In any shooting discipline from fishing to hunting, quality lenses will improve your performance and prevent you from eye-fatigue. Rudy Project lenses are a fantastic example of lenses that neutralise UV radiation and maintain the integrity of colours. Enhanced vi-sion and minimal distortion make the right lenses an essential purchase for the professional shooter. Lenses with low vision-distortion will benefit you too – Oakley lab test their lenses to ensure that light refraction is as small as possible, giving the wearer a view that’s as accurate as possible.

T I m E f O R A C H A N G E Be sure to purchase a frame with changeable lenses – shooting sessions can last all day and lenses that worked well for the light of the early morning won’t work so well when the sun is at its height. Yellow lenses will aid your vision in low light and brown lenses will shield you from the worst the sun can throw at you – so change them as you see fit. A strong one to hold off the midday sun and a weaker lens for mornings, evenings or overcast days will do the trick.

p laying tennis on an outdoor court has one big problem – you might have the crowd on your side, but the outdoors doesn’t pick sides. Tennis matches are postponed if the heavens open, but if you’re playing in gale force winds or under a blazing sun then you’re on your own. What you need are the right tennis sunglasses to deal

with the elements.

Z E R O H I N d R A N C E At Wimbledon this year, Roger Federer had the upper hand over Andy Murray the moment the roof over the famous Centre Court closed. But why exactly was that? Federer plays a game of accuracy and outside factors like wind and sunlight make accurate shots quite tricky and, at that level, very risky. The minute those distractions were removed, Roger could play less conservatively and went on to comprehensively beat Murray. Your sunglasses need to dis-tract you as little as possible. Eyewear with a cutaway design has the part of the frame that would otherwise block the view of the court removed, allowing the wearer to play with more accuracy.

H O L d Y O U R p O S I T I O N It’s no use diving to return a shot if your sunglasses fly off your face. The only thing flying should be the tennis ball – it’s essential to find a pair of sunglasses with grip built in to the arms and nosepiece. In particular, the kind of grip that becomes tackier the more active you become. Oakley Unobtainium responds to moisture with increased tackiness – so the more you sweat on the court, the firmer your sunglasses stay in place. The ideal complementary accessory to the fast-paced action on the tennis court.

A L I G H T w E I G H T S E R v I C E For tennis sunglasses, the rule is less is more. A minimal frame design and zero movement are crucial – as is a lightweight frame. When buying sunglasses for tennis, be sure to check they’re constructed from a material that’s comfortable to wear. The lighter your eyewear, the less you’ll notice it. Again, it’s all about minimising distractions. The Nike Skylon Ace is a great example – it’s built from lightweight nylon and it has a streamlined wrap-around design too. So instead of feeling like you’re wearing sunglasses, you won’t notice you have sunglasses on.
