WE NEED DIVERSE BOOKS

“We Need Diverse Books is a grassroots organization created to address the lack of diverse, non-majority narratives in children’s literature. We Need Diverse Books is committed to the ideal that embracing diversity will lead to acceptance, empathy, and ultimately, equality. ”

We Need Diverse Books official site

As a school with many cultures, I feel that our literature does not really reflect our colorful image. While there is nothing wrong with indulging in a non-diverse book, it is also important to see ourselves in the literature that we read. So, to support the movement, I have decided to make a section dedicated to books with diverse characters.

DIVERSE BOOK OF THE EDITION –

ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

This book centers around the friendship between two Mexican-American boys, Aristotle, an angry teen with a brother in prison, and Dante, a know-it-all lone swimmer. When they initially meet, they seem to be nothing like each other but the camaraderie evolves into a budding friendship, the kind that changes lives and lasts an entire lifetime.

It’s a beautifully-told coming-of-age story, lyrical and haunting in its writing. Despite the fact that there are no sudden plot twists or exciting thriller plots, it is a book that keeps you turning the pages until the end.

Aristotle and Dante’s characterization is done spectacularly. They are continually layered and exposed, becoming more complex but also becoming bare in some ways. Their emotions, quirks and habits are so heart-wrenchingly real that they resonate with every reader.

And as the story progresses, you come to realize that what seems like a simple story about a friendship, is actually a simple story about friendship but with themes woven in so deeply that gives the book an amazingly profound nature.

Although the author uses no complicated language or flowery words, it is able to convey the most impactful message through the author’s poetic prose. Sometimes, it is the shortest and most simple sentences that flood you with the most emotions.

This book will give you grief and joy and it definitely deserves all the praise it gets.

TASNEEM MAHER

Interview

Interviews with teachers with Reem Hossam, Shahd Naasan, and Tasneem Maher

We’re back with your favourite section – Interviews With Teachers! This

time, we interviewed newcomer Mr Werner, who teaches Biology.

Q - What’s your favourite movie?

A- Braveheart and The Green Mile

Q - What are your hobbies?

A- I play lots of cricket, tennis, and do computer programming. I spend

lots of time after hours doing mainly computer stuff. I play

instruments as well but that died a bit.

Q - What instruments do you play?

A- Only the guitar. I bought a piano, but that was pretty useless because

I got a piano with lights that teach you – you know, when the key

lights up and you press on it. That was hopeless. It didn‟t work.

Q - What’s your favourite food?

A- Pasta - Spaghetti Bolognese.

Q - Do you have any pet peeves?

A- I don‟t think I have pet peeves at all. I don‟t think there are many

things that annoy me. However, if a person chews food and I can see

what they‟re eating. Now that‟s just annoying.

Q - Would you consider yourself to be an introvert or an

extrovert?

A- I‟m such an introvert. [Interviewer: Really? It doesn’t seem like it.]

Q - What languages can you speak?

A- Mainly Afrikaans and English. I can greet in Russian. I can now greet

and speak two full sentences in Arabic. In my third year I started

learning/speaking Italian because I wanted to study at the University

of Bergamo in Italy, but that didn‟t work out that well.

Q - Tell us more about your educational background.

A- So I must give you my whole CV? I first went to school in the Free

State, I literally was born and raised in Bloemfontein in the Free

State. And then I went to school to Sentraal High. I then did my

normal BSc degree at the University of Free State. Then I finished

that and I started my Honours degree in the University of Free State.

Then when I was done with that I started my Masters also at

University of Free State, you know, where I did all my research stuff.

Then I started my PhD at the University of Cape Town, but due to

project funding I couldn‟t complete that unfortunately.

Q - Five adjectives to describe yourself.

A- Easy-going, not difficult, very serious, caring, absolutely amazing…

I‟m just kidding.

Q - What is your favourite memory from your childhood?

A- Well it‟s a sad memory because my uncle died, but then I got his little

microscope.

Q - What does your name mean?

A- It means leader but I‟m the middle child and in life that‟s difficult…

(edit: lol.)

Q - Where do you see yourself five years from now?

A- In Miami, on a beach, selling coconuts. No I‟m just kidding. I always

wanted to complete my research. We‟ll see where the path leads me.

Q - When did you choose to become a teacher and why?

A- The last couple of years I was a Biotechniques sales representative

and only teaching part time. But then I just thought, you know, I

haven‟t studied 8-9 years for selling stuff. That‟s when I decided to go

back into the field of education and teaching and doing it full time!

Q - What would be your dream vacation?

A- Probably in Miami on a beach. [Interviewer: What’s so special about

Miami?] Because I‟ve never been to Miami. What I like about Miami?

You know the CSI series? Usually the first couple of scenes with all

those cruise liners, I want to be there. When I saw that I was like

„that‟s where I‟m supposed to be‟.

Q - What’s one skill you can never perfect no matter how much

you tried?

A- Probably playing the piano. I‟ve failed at it so many times. Even the

lights on the piano didn‟t help because you have to memorise that

stuff.

Q - What is one of your weaknesses and how do you manage to

overcome it?

A- Believe it or not, I hated speaking in front of people. [Interviewer:

You’ve obviously gotten over it.] Immensely. When you do science,

the only way that scientists communicate with each other is by

presenting your results. So when I started studying, I had to present

my research and it became a weekly thing. And from a weekly thing it

became a daily thing. I think that I‟ve pretty much gotten over that

but I didn‟t like it. I‟m still an introvert and I‟m quite shy.

Q - When where you most satisfied in a job?

A- I usually set myself a couple of goals that I have to accomplish that I

feel are needed to be good in the job that you do. I‟ve always

accomplished these goals. They might be personal goals, small things

you know. But if I can accomplish that then I know that I‟ll be able to

accomplish anything in that profession.

Q - Describe a time when your work was criticised.

A- In my research, it was the human umbilical/aortic vein endothelial

cell line I was working with. I grew the cell line and I had to grow it on

a cell culture surface because you had to resemble what happens in

the human body in that specific areas. It did work perfectly but I had

to ask for advice from experts. The expert was my supervisor and she

gave me lots of advice that I didn‟t take that well because I knew for a

fact that I perfected that way of growing this specific cell line and it

was the first time someone got it right in South Africa. She criticized

my work because there was a different way that you can do it. That‟s

also one of my biggest accomplishments.

Q - Describe your ideal working environment.

A- I hate conflict. I hate fighting. So my ideal working environment

would be, not a quiet one as I like interaction as well, but a nice,

friendly, easy-going environment will do.

Q - Was there a person in your career who really made a

difference?

A- My mother. My dad was a workaholic so I didn‟t see him much. But

my mother she looked after three boys and she motivated me. She

was always there.

Q - What are your lifelong dreams?

A- I am so close to figuring out certain aspects of the clotting pathway in

HIV patients. That‟s the lifelong dream for me. That and for the

treatment of specific breast cancer cells. For breast cancer in women,

the treatments are specific. I‟m so close to that as well. I managed to

kill breast cancer cells in my honours and inhibit the growth, so now

the next step is implementing that in our system.

Q - Why did you choose biology as your major?

A- When I saw my first cat hair under the microscope, that‟s when I

realised something‟s going on that‟s so small but there is literally a

whole different world under the microscope. Then I always wanted to

do biology.

Q - What was your proudest achievement outside work?

A- Outside work? I was a lab rat, so I didn‟t have an outside world.

Proudest achievement? Playing ‘Nothing Else Matters’ by Metallica

on the guitar.

Q - Who are your heroes or role models?

A- My parents. My dad is like the leader of the family. He is like the deep

thinker so all the difficult decisions I had to make in my life always

went to him. My mother was there for all the support. She carried me

through everything.

Q - What’s your favourite quote?

A- “Life is like a camera. Just focus on what‟s important, capture the

good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don‟t turn out –

take another shot.”

China Bans Consoles

Why do you think consoles such as PS4, XBOX One and Wii

are banned in China? We’d like to tell you the reason, as

ironically, the Wii, the PS3 and the X box 360 are Chinese-

made. The Chinese government is very concerned about their

peoples’ health and wealth so they decided to ban all consoles

because children could spoil their brains and would learn

violence. They also said, “We thought that this was the best way

to protect our Chinese youth from wasting their minds on video

games, after a parental outcry”. The following year, online

gaming exploded, and the market size hit 100 million gamers, so

the ban did not stop the problem. Therefore, the Chinese

president decided to ban the use of any console or electronic

game.

Scott Kelly on the ISS A picture of a sunrise over the USA (Credits: Scott Kelly)

We all dream of spending a day in space, but for astronaut Scott Kelly it's work. He

has surpassed the record of the longest time spent in space. He is the first American to

have spent nearly a year on the International Space Station (ISS), having spent 350

days (and counting!). He is scheduled to return from the ISS on March 3rd, 2016. Not

every astronaut goes to space more than twice, but he has been there three times! His

mission this time was to collect medical records. Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly are the

first pair of twins to both become astronauts. NASA will compare Mark and Scott

Kelly to compare the effects of space on the human body. He takes many amazing

pictures of the Earth from space and updates his twitter account with these very

regularly. Go check them out, the Earth is beautiful when seen from the cuppola on

GOOD AFTERNOON FRIENDS TODAY I’M TALKING ABOUT THE SUN AND THE NINE PLANETS.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM IS A PART OF OUR UNIVERSE AND THIS INCLUDES THE SUN AND THE NINE PLANETS. THE PLANETS REVOLVE AROUND THE SUN. THE SOLAR SYSTEM ALSO COMPRISES CELESTIAL BODIES LIKE COMETS, METEORS, ASTEROIDS, MOONS AND STARS. THE SUN IS THE LARGEST OBJECT IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. IT IS A MEDIUM-SIZED STAR AND IT IS MADE UP OF GASES. THE SUN IS SO BIG THAT YOU CAN FIT MILLIONS OF EARTHS INTO IT.

THE EARTH IS THE ONLY PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM WHICH CONTAINS THE THINGS ESSENTIAL TO LIFE. THE SOLAR SYSTEM IS MADE UP OF AN INNER AND AN OUTER CORE .THE SUN IS THE LARGEST OBJECT IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM .MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH AND MARS ARE KNOWN AS THE ROCKY PLANETS. SATURN, URANUS, JUPITER AND NEPTUNE ARE KNOWN AS THE GAS GIANTS BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE OF GASES.

THE SOLAR SYSTEM WAS FORMED INSIDE A CLOUD OF GAS CALLED THE SOLAR NEBULA. THIS BECAME HOTTER AND SMALLER, UNTIL IT FORMED A SUN. DEBRIS WHICH WAS AROUND THE SUN JOINED TO FORM THE PLANETS. VENUS IS THE HOTTEST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, MERCURY IS FAIRLY CLOSE TO THE SUN .THANK YOU.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

What is BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorder is a serious mental illness marked by unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. It was listed as a diagnosable illness for the first time in 1980.

Signs and symptoms

Extreme reactions – including panic, depression, rage, or frantic actions – to abandonment whether real or perceived

A pattern of intense and stormy relationships with family and loved ones, often veering from extreme closeness and love (idealization) to extreme dislike or anger (devaluation)

Distorted and unstable self-image or sense of self

Impulsive and often dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, binge eating and spending sprees

Recurring suicidal behavior or threats or self-harming behavior, such as cutting

Intense and highly changeable moods

Feelings of emptiness and/or boredom

Inappropriate, intense anger or problems controlling anger

Having stress-related paranoid thoughts.

People with this disorder also have high rates of co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorder, substance abuse and eating disorders, along with self-harm, suicidal behavior and completed suicides.

Seemingly ordinary events may trigger symptoms. For example, people with BPD may feel angry and distressed over minor separations – such as vacations or business trips or sudden changes of plans – from people to whom they feel close. Studies show that people with this disorder may see anger in an emotionally-neutral face and have a stronger reaction to words with negative meanings than people who do not have the disorder.

Causes

Most experts agree that there’s no single cause for Borderline Personality Disorder. It is likely to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

Genetics

Neurotransmitters (chemicals used by the brain to transmit signals)

Neurobiology ( structure and function of the brain and the nervous system)

Environmental factors (events that happened in the past)

What are the risk factors for BPD?

Adults who come from families where divorce, neglect, physical abuse, substance abuse, or death occurred are at higher risk of developing BPD. In children, the risk for developing this disorder appears to increase when they have a learning problem or certain temperaments. Adolescents who develop alcohol abuse or addiction are also apparently at higher risk of developing BPD compared to others who do not.

Sunshine Toast

You will need:

1. Dip a paper towel into some butter. Then, rub the butter all over the baking sheet to

grease it.

2. 2. Using a knife, spread butter on one side of the slice of bread. Then press the cutter into

the middle of the bread

3. Lift out the shape you have cut out. Put both pieces of bread onto the baking sheet, with

their buttered sides upwards.

4. Break the egg into a saucer. Then, carefully slide the egg into the hole in the bread. Put

the baking sheet in the oven.

5. Bake the bread and egg in the oven for seven minute. Bake it for a little longer if you

don’t like a runny egg yolk.

6. Wearing oven gloves, carefully lift the baking sheet out of the oven. Use a fish slice to

The toast needs to be eaten as soon as it is cooked. Enjoy!

Sports

On the afternoon of Thursday 29/10/15 there was a very interesting match between Dortmund and Manchester City. It was a close score though of 2-1 for Dortmund. Everyone played fantastically and tried really hard. Manchester City tried really hard and cooperated but not enough to beat the lion tamers. Until the first half it was a tie 0-0 but the lion tamers didn’t like it. Mustafa Sadeq, Dortmund’s team captain, passed to Mohanad Hani Mustafa. He didn’t have a chance to shoot the ball so he passed it to Ahmed Sadeq who scored a goal at an angle impossible to be blocked. The score was 1-0. In the second half Mustafa Sadeq crossed a really strong high pass to Mohanad but didn’t reach him. Unfortunately it hit the leg of Manchester United striker Zaid Emad and bounced above the goalkeeper’s hand.

In the School Champions League, the first match was a clash between Manchester United and Real Madrid. This match was probally the hardest match to guess the winner as one team attacked then the other, with two focussed goalies and strong defence. Real Madrid managed to sneak up a goal early in the game scored by Hamza, the team leader of Real Madrid and after very hard work by Mostafa. Even though Real Madrid scored, Manchester United didn’t lose hope and managed to score to make thing even near the end of the first half. The goal was put in neatly by Ali Makhaitah after an assist by Mohammed Sameh. Once the second half started, Ali again managed to shoot from out of the box and the ball zoomed into the net which put United ahead. Real Madrid were running out of time with several attacks and several saves by Mazin the United goalkeeper, until Hamza again used his skills and speed, shot the ball hard, and managed to score with the ball edging off the goalkeepers gloves and made it tied 2-2. The match ended with the same score. The two teams are looking for a win in their next match.

Sportsmanship

I have always been taught good sportsmanship and the importance it plays in my life.

That’s why I think sportsmanship plays a vital role in daily lives as well as sports.

Good sportsmanship really is playing by the rules, respecting your opponents and

putting hard work over winning. It teaches students how to be considerate, show

respect and play fairly.

To me, sportsmanship means making friends. It can help you make friends because if

you are nice, people will like you. And if you beat them, do not tease them because

there is a good chance you will become friends.

Sportsmanship also means competition because without teasing each other we can

have fun playing against other kids and they can have fun with us. Competition can

make us a better person and help us learn more about people and the game we are

playing.

Sportsmanship is very important when we play sports and when we are involved in

other activities. We shouldn't get angry when things don’t go right. Sportsmanship

teaches people how to get along better with everyone, including our opponents. When

we show sportsmanship we have a good attitude and better teamwork.

Sportsmanship includes teamwork. It means the team working together as one. When

we play fair we feel good. So it’s important to have sportsmanship.

Good sportsmanship comes from players who are firm .Therefore, they will do their

best all the time. We gain sportsmanship by controlling our actions. Sportsmanship

can take us to a high level in life. Sportsmanship can do a lot for our future.

So next time if you hear “it’s good to show sportsmanship” you will understand why.

Also remember “Dare to play fair!” It will help you go far in life and in everything

you do. Also, having good sportsmanship will help you succeed in life.
