NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT
IMPORTANT DATES
Dear Members,
One of the great things about serving on the Irvington Club Board of Trustees* is an increased appreciation for the passion and commitment members and staff have to make the Club such a cherished part of our shared community.
The annual Carolyn Lumber Tournament highlighted much of what we value - camaraderie, good sportsmanship, competition, and fun. (Not to mention endurance!) Congratulations to everyone who participated. A big ‘thank you’ to the Club staff for the extra effort (and hours) to make the tournament successful and to the tournament committee for amping up the fun and keeping us all up to date on the results.
Back in the Board Room, we continue to explore ways to improve our facilities. Lately, we have been focused on the outdoor doubles court and the pool and pool area. The outdoor court will need some fairly significant maintenance in the near future. Because we will be doing work on the court anyway, we decided to take a look at different options that have come up over the years. One of those potential options is converting the court to a clay surface. The pool also requires maintenance and we are moving forward with the following:
a. Refinishing the surface with a commercial quartz finish - this is better than plaster and lasts longer. b. Remove and replace the perimeter waterline tile and perimeter coping stone. c. Remove existing tile racing lane lines and install four new tile racing lines with wall targets to coordinate each lane. This will include anchoring new sockets to accept lane lines. We will provide lane ropes.
In addition, we will be exploring other ways to update and improve the pool and deck area based on the great feedback we received from the pool survey. Some of the key elements we will be exploring are improving the deck, increasing shade and upgrading furniture, among other ideas.
NOTES FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Dear Irvington Members,
The dust has settled and what a “rock-n-roll” two weeks we had here at our amazing Club! Lots of great tennis, incredible
dinners, and good times were evident during our annual Carolyn Lumber Tournament.
I know I say every year that it can’t get better, but it does! I can’t name all of the people, as I would fill up the newsletter,
but you know who you are and I so appreciate the work and effort put into making this tournament the special event it is.
I will say thanks to my staff and to so many of our members - you are the best!
Coming up is our annual Wine Tasting Event. Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 16th in the ballroom from
6:30 – 9:00 pm. We have added a couple more local vineyards, so you won’t want to miss this fun event. We will be
sending more details in email blasts and with signage around the Club.
We will be starting the work on the new fence along the outdoor doubles tennis court and will be putting up some safety
fencing which will block the sidewalk for a while. I never realized how complex it can be to build a fence, especially with the
existing criteria we have to deal with (a retaining wall and very hard ground). The work started on November 1st, which
means the outdoor doubles court is now closed for play. We will keep you posted on the progress.
As always, I hope to see you at the Club!
Barbara
Thank you for all you do to make the Irvington Club the best!
* The Irvington Club is a member-directed club. We have Board elections every February. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Barb. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tracy Bardel l
Community of Hope & NE Emergency Food Program
By: Amy Alpern
In just the last dozen years, Irvington Club member Tracy Bardell has spent a day
a month volunteering at homeless shelters for families and working for an
emergency food pantry. Although this work requires a commitment of time and
energy, Tracy views it as an opportunity to take the focus off of herself and the
worries of the world. “I gain perspective every time I walk out the door.
Sometimes I just have to sit in my car and regroup and say a prayer. Service work
gives me hope that I can make a difference locally in this chaotic world.”
Tracy currently volunteers at Community of Hope and at Northeast Emergency
Food Program. Community of Hope empowers homeless single-parent families to
cultivate hope, healing, and stability while transforming their lives. Bardell and
other volunteers from Fremont United Methodist Church (including Mary
Knocke) bring a meal to COH once a month and then hang out and get to know
the families. “Families can live in COH for as long as six months so we do have an
opportunity to build rapport and really get to know each other. Families know
when we are coming so they know that for that night they can unwind after a day
of work or a day of looking for work.” Tracy readily admits that she spends most
of her time at COH playing with the kids.
“I see love in these kids. I see love in how they play with their siblings and each
other. I see stress in the parents, but also grace.” Tracy recalled a time when her brother had a birthday cake delivered to
her. She brought the cake into the family shelter and set it on the counter. One of the kids asked whose birthday it was and
Tracy said it was her birthday. He was holding an unwrapped sucker and reached his hand out to Tracy and said “Happy
Birthday!” “Of course I did not take his sucker but it was just so amazing and so touching to me.”
Northeast Emergency Food Program, a program run through the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, provides food and other
items to families with children, unemployed individuals, people with special needs, elderly, immigrants and refugees, and
people experiencing crisis. Tracy often assists by stocking shelves prior to opening and then works as a shopper guide or
works the intake desk or the clothing room. “One time I brought in clothes to give away and I was really shocked that all of
the stuff I brought in got picked out and taken home that day. It made me realize that we have way too many clothes and
things we consider too old are exciting and necessary to others. It really moved me to see this.”
Tracy performs both of her current volunteer gigs in connection with Fremont United Methodist Church. Community of
Hope is in St. Johns and Northeast Emergency Food Program is at 4800 NE 72nd Ave. Individuals interested in volunteering
can contact Tracy or can make contact with these agencies directly.
