Dear Sunnyslope Families,

First trimester has quickly come and gone. We have worked hard as a learning community to demonstrate respectful, responsible and safe behavior

every day. It creates a positive school-wide learning environment for all

students and staff. Consequently, we have seen outstanding social and

academic gains.

I have loved watching your students engage in classroom discussions

and Socratic seminars during our new English Language Arts curriculum, Wit and Wisdom lessons. They are deepening their knowledge about big

ideas and growing in their confidence to share and justify their thinking.

This helps support strong comprehension skills.

We are working with your kiddos to develop their social-emotional

well-being through the Second Step curriculum focusing on Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. During

Emotional Management we teach students to identify their feelings so that

they can identify solutions to solve their problems. Our counselor teaches

the statement “When you ____(behavior), I feel _____ (feeling), because _____

(reason), so what I would like is _______ (request). For example, when you say

you don’t want to play with me, I feel sad, because I want to be your friend, so what I would like is to play together at recess. Although kids certainly

don’t always get what they want, sharing their feelings helps them learn how

to handle their emotions. During problem solving we teach a four-step

process called STEP: Say the problem (without blame), Think of solutions

(safe and respectful), Explore consequences (what would happen if…), and Pick the best solution (make your plan).

Our Sunnyslope Community consistently demonstrates

wonderful citizenship during the Holiday Season. This is an opportunity for

students to learn the valuable lesson of giving to others. Thank you for your

contributions supporting South Kitsap Helpline and our Sunnyslope PTA

Adopt-a-Family program. We have also benefited from the gifts of others. A special thank you to Christ the Rock Church for continuing to offer their site

for our Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Holiday Concerts. Their space

provides ample parking, seating, and incredible sound quality for you to enjoy

the talents of your amazing children. Thank you to Christ the Rock and the

VFW for supporting our adopt-a-family program.

We wish each of your families a Happy Holiday Season. We are so

grateful to work with your children and our amazing Sunnyslope

community.

We have many field trips

coming up! Please make

sure that all permission

slips are turned in on or

before the due date. Our

school nurse is at

Sunnyslope two days a

week and all field trip forms

must be seen by the nurse

before the trip.

Did you know you can

submit an absence

request online?

The Attendance application

in Skyward Family Access

allows a parent/guardian to

enter Absence Requests if

their student is expected to

be absent from school.

NOTES FROM HOME

Please include stu-dent’s first and last name, teacher and date on notes that you send to school. This in-formation is important for the office to get the correct mes-sage to your student. Thank you!

The winter weather is upon us! Make sure you are signed up

for the following:

Flash Alert: This is the first place

school information is sent. It is the same source media outlets use to feed the information ticker that runs on the bottom of the screen during a newscast.

It is that time of the year again when lots of germs are making the rounds! Just a

reminder that if your student has a temperature over 100F, they are to stay home and

cannot return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours. The same rule

applies for symptoms of gastrointestinal viruses like vomiting

and diarrhea; the student can return to school 24 hours after

their last episode. Remember to wash hands frequently and

cover our coughs! Let’s all do our best to stay healthy!
