Martha’s Musings . . .

The Holiday Countdown Has Begun!

Thanksgiving is barely over. We are still eating leftovers, and the countdown has begun. We count-down the number of shopping days until Christmas – of days until we decorate our homes – of hours until we write cards – of time we find for extra baking. Preparing for Christmas takes time – and sometimes we have a great deal of difficulty finding that extra time. Some years we relish the extra activities. Our children and grandchildren sing in a pageant. We see family from far away, and the time together is more than memorable. Then there are years we are not as en-ergetic about putting up the tree or making two dozen extra cookies for the school party. However, we feel about the extra preparation, I invite us to ponder Advent as much as we think on the Holiday Countdown. Advent offers us a new understanding for the time preceding Christmas that can reorient us from the hustle and bustle of the holidays, for Advent is about waiting – not doing. The themes of Advent concern waiting for the birth of the baby on Christmas and equally important, waiting for the second coming of Christ. Advent is a time we tell the story of the birth of Jesus in the manger, and we also recall the promise of swords beaten to form plows. We tell old stories of deserts breaking in to bloom – of food for everyone – of no harm coming on God’s holy mountain. Advent means coming, and it is time to renew our hope and longing for our Lord who promised to return soon. Advent is about both stories. Both stories are about waiting and hope. And so, we might think about the time we spend shopping and buying. Instead of material gifts to friends and family, we might offer them the gift of our time. We might find new, simpler ways we can join in the hope of Advent together in our families and at Sunrise. I pray that we join together this Advent as we wait for Christ’s coming. The Parlor Sunday School Class will study Advent each week as will the Tuesday noon Bible study. Both offer the opportunity to study scripture and listen for what God says to us. Worship will offer us time to pray together for Christ’s coming. In particular, our choir is preparing wonderful music to helps us wait and celebrate! Everyone is invited to my home at 758 Highland Avenue from 2:00 – 4:00 on December 16 for an Open House. Please feel free to bring friends and relatives. Many events occur in Salina that day, but feel free to stop by on your way to the symphony or other programs. Let us join together in this time of holy waiting as we pray the ancient pray, “Come, Lord Jesus. Come quickly.” Peace, Martha Another Note The Greek letter chi or X was used by early Christians as an initial for Christ. They often wrote X to refer to Christ. The use of X for Christ has come through the centuries. When I took notes in seminary, I always used X to refer to Christ. It is tempting to think that XMAS takes the Christ out of Christmas – but it keeps Christ right in!

A New Book We have new additions to Addie's Corner, our library for the young and young at heart. Watch for future additions. Why not honor a child's birthday with a gift to purchase a book? Name of Book: A Wrinkle in Time Author: Madeleine L’Engle Illustrator: Taeeum Yoo (cover art) Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux Audience: Ages 8 and up Summary: This is a story about three children who fight an evil force threaten-ing their planet. In an attempt to save Meg and Charles Wallace’s father, the two siblings and a friend, Calvin, learn about the tesseract (a wrinkle in time) and learn to tesser (travel through space) from individ-uals of great goodness, Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, the Happy Medium, and Aunt Beast. Their journey leads them to a final showdown with “IT,” a dark, disembodied intelligence striving to make every-one in the universe believe and think the same.

Recently memorial money was used to purchase some new books for Addie’s Corner. The books were chosen for their quality and appropriateness for a church library. These books are for young children as well as grade school children. Some of the members of the youth group cleaned and organized Addie’s Corner in anticipation of these new books. During this time, some of the youth group mentioned that they would like some books for their age level in Addie’s Corner. The same criterion was used to choose the following books that are appropriate for those people in 5th grade through adult.

“A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle “The Lions of Little Rock” by Kristine Levine “Bread and Roses, Too” by Katherine Paterson “The Giver” by Lois Lowry “The River and the Rain” by Bijou Le Tord “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry “Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust” by Immaculee Ilbagiza “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis

The idea of a book club for those 5th grade through 12th grade has been discussed. This book club would begin in January. If you’re interested, please talk to Jackie Thompson. We would begin by reading

ADOPT A FAMILY

Please be considering helping 3 families from our neighbor-hood school, Heusner, to have a better Christmas this Decem-ber. We will adopt “3” families by providing clothes and toys. Members have been soo generous in the past. I know your heart is in the right place. More details to come.

GOD’S KIDS

The children of God’s Kids read and discussed Isaiah 65:17-25, “wolves and lambs will eat together, lions will eat straw, as cattle do...on Zion my sacred hill there will be noth-ing harmful or evil.” Isaiah’s vision promises that God is creating a new heaven and earth, and a holy mountain becomes a symbol of hope. Mountains are made of rock. The children created their own symbol of hope by making “hope stones.” they used the stones to create a hope stone garden. Look for it in a corner on the left side of the front of the building (as you face the building).

CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT All children and youth are encouraged to participate in a simple pageant during the 5:00 Christmas Eve service. During the service, we’ll tell the story of Jesus birth through scripture and song with the children and youth forming a costumed tableau. We’re excited that Gina Sanders will be directing the pageant for us. There will be a rehearsal on December 16. Parents please watch for the rehearsal time. Parents, grandparents, and others please let the church office know if your children or youth would like to partici-pate.

Couples and/or individuals will be assigned to a group of 8 and will then make their own decisions about how you meet to share a meal each month. The object is to encourage us all to get to know other members of the congregation in a more personal way. Folks who have participated before have always been very pos-itive about the experience. Sign-up sheets will be on the bulletin board until December 15th. You will be notified of the participants in your group by the first of the year.

RED CROSS

THANKS YOU! To Sunrise Presbyterian Church Staff-

I am writing to offer my per-sonal thanks to you for your on-going support of American Red Cross Blood Services. Allowing us the use of your facility is great-ly appreciated. It takes a lot of people to host a blood drive and to get blood to the patients, but without a location to host blood drives, none of that would be possible. Thanks so much for your support! Sincerely, Terri Dunaway
