    Summary:TheSUNYCortlandResidenceHallAssociationandNationalResidenceHallHonoraryhave

    individuallygrownandimprovedrapidlyoverthepasttwoyears.RHAhasestablished

    annualprogramsandalsostartedtoadvocacyinitiativesintheresidencehallsandaround

    campus.NRHHhasalsomadegreatstridesintheirorganization.Theyhavehadafullchapterforthepasttwoyearsandcontinuetoequallyuseeachofthefourpillars.Attheendofthe

    year,RHAandNRHHmettodiscusshowthingscouldbebetterfortheyeartocome.We

    realizedthatwehavetoworktogetherlikethesisterorganizationsweare.Startingwiththe

    executiveboards,weknewworkingtogethersidebysidewouldbenefitbothRHAandNRHH,

    eventhoughwearedifferentorganizations.Themaingoalofbothorganizationsistoinstill

    leadershipineachoneoftheirmembers.Afterrevampingoldleadershiptrainingsand

    implementingnewones,RHAandNRHHwantedtoensurethatthemembersbecame

    effectiveleadersandwanttomakeadifferenceonourcampus.Mostimportantlywewant

    themtounderstandthattheseorganizationswouldntbeheretodayifitwasntforleadership

    becauseRHAandNRHHrunsonleadership!

    SUNY Cortland Campus

    State University of New YorkCollege at Cortland:In1848SUNYCortlandwasknownastheCortland

    NormalSchool.Overtime,thecampuseventually

    grewandin1948itofficiallybecameknown

    astheStateUniversityofNewYorkCollegeatCortland.

    Thereareapproximately7,300undergraduatestudents

    pursuingdegreeswithintheCollegesthreeacademic

    divisions,alongwithtwenty-eightacademicdepartments,whichofferour

    students63majorsand44minorstochoosefrom.Snuggledintothehillsof

    beautifulCentralNewYork,Cortlandiswellknownforitsexcellencein

    teachereducation,andisaprominentleaderinphysicaleducationandsportmanagement.

    NotonlyisSUNYCortlandcontinuingtogrow

    inacademics,Cortlandisalsoboominginthe

    residentialcommunity.

    Withapproximately3,600residents,therehas

    beena10-yearplanwithintheSUNYCortland

    ResidenceLifeandHousingDepartmentworkingto

    improveeachofthe16residencehallseveryyear.

    WhileCortlandisasmallandquietcommunity,the

    stronginvolvementofstudentsinRHAandNRHHhas

    workedtogiveourcampusfunandexcitingoptions

    toenhancethecollegeexperience.

    heResidenceHallAssociation(RHA)isanorganizationoncampusthatstrivesto

    mprovetheresidencehallcommunityandon-campusliving.Thisorganization

    ngagesresidentstogetinvolvedincampus-wideprograms;initiate

    dvocacyoncampusandprovidesleadershipopportunitiesforresidents.

    UNYCortlandsRHAwasinactivefrom1989to2006untilonestudent,John

    udenko,andoneadvisor,CheriSkipworthre-instatedRHAandwasaffiliatedbyMini

    o-Frillsin2007.Sincethen,theorganizationhasgrownintooneofthelargeststudent

    unorganizationsoncampus,secondarytotheStudentGovernmentAssociation.Our

    HAconsistsofbothstudentstaffmembersandresidentswholiveoncampus.Each

    esidencehallhastheirownhallcouncil,whichisresponsibleforputtingprogramsonfor

    esidentsintheirindividualhall.Overtheyears,thecontinuedinvolvementofstudents

    vingoncampushasincreasedtremendouslyandtherehasbeenarecentpushof

    nthusiasmtomakeourorganizationabetterone.

    NRHH Rho Delta Chapter:TheNationalResidenceHallHonoraryontheSUNY

    CortlandcampusallstartedfromoneOTM.AfterbeingrecognizedwithanOTMforResidentAssistantof

    themonthbyherhalldirector,AshleyHudsonMorrell

    decidedshewantedtoimplementaNRHHchapteron

    ourcampus.Shelovedgettingrecognizedandwanted

    tosharethatfeelingwiththeentirecampus.

    CheriSkipworthandAshleyHudson-Morrellstartedacommitteeinthe

    springof2007toseeifwewantedtobringachaptertocampus.Afterfinishingthe

    constitution,theystartedrecruitingmembersfortheFallof2007.InOctober2007,

    theyinductedtheAlphaclassofabout30members.ThenewNRHHwantedtorecognizethoseleaderswhodooutstandingworkoutsidewhatsrequiredofthem

    whilealsoexcellingatschool.Theyalsowantedtheprogrammingfocusedmoreon

    service.Theorganizationhascontinuedtogrowandexpandoverthepastfew

    years,expandingbeyondjuststudentstaffmemberstootherleadersoncampus.

    InstillingthefourpillarsintheorganizationhasbeenaconstantgoalofNRHHover

    thepastfewyears,aswellascreatingprogramtraditionswithinthechapter,and

    findingnewandcreativewaystorecognize.

    History of Leadership Training on Campus:RHAandNRHHhavehistoricallyhadseparatetrainingsfortheirorganizations.RHAhostsa

    LeadershipNightatthefirstgeneralbodymeetingofthesemester.AtLeadershipNighteach

    personlearnsandunderstandstheirrolesonhallcouncil,whilebondingwiththegeneralbody.

    ThisyearNRHHdecidedtotryadifferentformofleadershiptrainingandtaketheirchapterto

    RaquetteLakeforaretreat.Usually,theexecutiveboardsofeachgroupwouldgothrough

    separatetrainingsduringthesummer.However,thisyearwedecidedtohaveanExecutive

    BoardretreatatAdamsEdenCampincludingbothRHAandNRHHexecutiveboards.

    thedaywithourwholegroupblindfolded,beingled

    throughobstaclesbyonememberofourgroupto

    thelocationofournextactivity.Afterwe

    completedthis,wewereaskedwhatwemayhave

    gainedfromthisactivityandhowitcouldbe

    appliedbackatSUNYCortland.Thisiswhenthesisterorganizationsstartedtoreallyworktogether

    asateam.

    Nextwedidaveryriskyexercise.Atfirstwehada

    mousetraptoourselves,hadtosetit,thenputourown

    handoverit,thenreleaseit.Thisgotustotrust

    ourselves.Thenwegotwithapartneranddidthesame

    thing,totrustoneotherperson.Thenasagroupinacircleweallhadtotrusteachotherandletgoofthe

    mousetraps.Thiswasparticularlydifficultforsome

    individualsbut,weweresupportiveofeachotherand

    alotoftrustwasbuilt.

    Wethenmovedontotwodifferentlowropescourses.Thefirst

    onegotusalltalkingandwerealizedtheimportanceof

    communicationandmakingsureeveryoneisheard.Wealsothat

    sometimestoomanyconflictingopinionscanharmthegroupand

    relationships.Thesecondofthelowropescoursestestedus

    physicallyandmentally.Weencouragedeachother,offeredsupportanditwouldnothavebeenpossibletomakeitthrough

    withoutverbalaffirmationsandphysicalassistance.

    Webrieflybrokeforlunch,andlotsofwater!Wethenreturnedandwenttothehighropes

    ourse.Thenwebrokeupintotwogroups.Onewentthroughanobstaclecourse,andtheother

    wentonazipline.Thenthegroupsswitched.Withineachgroupthereweresomewhostood

    outandeasilyconqueredthechallenges,butthentheyhelped,coaxedandencouragedthe

    othersthroughit.Mostofuswereverytiredandwenttobedearlythatnight!

    whichincludedourgoalsforthesemester/yearasan

    organizationandapersonally.

    Afterthiswemovedontopoliciesandprocedures.NRHHcreatedtheirbudget,whileRHAhad

    acontinueddiscussionofpoliciesandproceduresaswellasbondingandtimetoworkon

    theirE-boardbuddycraftproject.RHAhadalreadycreatedtheirbudgetoverthesummer.

    Afterlunchwediscussedeffectivewaystorunameeting,whichwasagoodchanceforthe

    sisterorganizationstosharethedifferentwaysweoperate,andhowitcanbeeffectivein

    eitherorganization.Alsocreativenewwaysofadvertisingwasdiscussed.

    TheE-boardsseparatedtocreateE-boardexpectationsfortheyearandtogooverour

    constitutionandby-laws.

    Overallthistimewasusedtobetterourselvesasindividuals,getusonthesamepage,and

    makeusmoreknowledgeableaboutourpositionsandduties.

    AfterdinnertheE-boardsworkedtogethertodoa

    picturescavengerhunt(Andsincethereweretwo

    birthdaystobecelebrateditwasagoodchancetoget

    usoutofthecabinsotheadvisorscoulddecorate!)

    Thiswasarelaxingtimeforustogooutonan

    adventureandworktogetherasstudentsin

    leadershiproles.

    Welearnedmoreabouteachindividualthroughteambuildingactivities,butwewerealso

    abletoconcentrateoncollectivegoalsfortheupcomingyear.Wewereabletocreate

    expectationsofourselvestoupholdfortheyear,whichwestilllookbackonnowtomake

    surewearestayingontrack.Thiscreatesmotivationforustoliveupourleadershiproles.

    Thisretreatalsobroughtoutleaderswithinthegroupthatmaynothavenormallybeen

    recognized.Peoplewereabletoshowtheirstrengthsandhelptheothers,whomayhave

    struggled,specificallywiththephysicalchallenges.Thisgaveachanceforthemtoshine,

    gavethemconfidencetoallowustorelyoneachothermore.Recognizingthestrengths

    andweaknessesoftheE-boardmembersisbeneficialtorecognizeearlysowecanaskfor

    helpwhenevernecessary.Thismentalityiswhatallowedourleadershiptrainingsforour

    organizationstoflourish!

    ThistripallowedustobondwithinourE-boards,RHAand

    NRHH,butalsoallowedforcommunicationbetweenthe

    twogroups.BetweenRHAandNRHH,weofferedeach

    otheradviceaboutwhathasworkedinwithinourspecific

    organizationsandhowittranslatestotheother.

    OurE-boardsmayhaveknowneachotherbeforethisretreat,

    butitgaveusachancetofocusoneachindividualoutsideofourCortlandexperience.

    Itallowedustorecognizestrengthsandweaknessesandoffersupport.Thisretreat

    wascrucialfortheE-boardsworktogetherinaneffectivemanner.Evenduring

    unscheduledtime,likebeforebed,thesleepingarrangementsallowedustostayup,talk,andgettoknoweachotherbetter.KnowingtheE-boardmembersonapersonal

    andnotjustabusinesslevelletsusworkmorecohesively.

    Purpose:TheSUNYCortlandResidenceHallAssociationhasanannualLeadershipNight.Thiseventis

    anopportunityforallthehallcouncilsfromeveryresidence

    halltocometogether,minglewitheachother,make

    connectionsandmostimportantlylearntheirposition

    requirementsonhallcouncil.Thiseventistraditionallythe

    thirdweekofclassestoalloweachresidencehallenough

    timetocreateafullhallcouncil.

    Planning Process: Inourfirstexecutiveboardmeeting,wedecidedthatLeadershipnightwas

    necessaryandfromthere,wecouldstartplanningtheactivitiesandinformationthatwouldbegiven.

    Theexecutiveboarddecidedthatthisyearwewouldimplementcheatsheetsthatthehallcouncilscouldbringbackwiththemtouseasareferencethroughout

    theyear.

    Thecheatsheetsincludedinformationaboutthedutiesofeachpositionalongwiththecontactinformationofthecorrespondingexecutiveboardmember.

    Theactivitieswereimplementedsopeoplefeltcomfortabletomakepotentialconnectionsandhavealittlefunbefore ettin downtobusiness.

    Budget:LeadershipNightisusedasalearningtoolfortheResidenceHallAssociationtoassisttheHallCouncilssotheeffectsarepricelesstous.Wehadaspent

    $67,whichincludedsuppliestomakenameplatesforeveryHallCouncilmember(a

    minimumof4councilmembersper16residencehalls)andcandytobeusedinicebreakers

    Leadership Night Activities:SUNYCortlandRHAbelievesthat torunonleadership,youmustfirstlearntowalk .This

    meetingwasusedtoeducateandeasethetransitionintotheirhallcouncilpositions.The

    executiveboardintroducedthemselves,explainedtheirroles,andhowtheycould assistthehall

    councils.Also,ourmissionstatementwasreadsotherewasnoconfusionastowhatour

    expectationsare.

    First,wedecidedmakingnameplateswouldbebeneficialfortheexecutiveboardtohelpuslearnourGeneralBodymembersnamesandtoincreasethecommunitybetweenmembersof

    differenthallcouncils.Weprovidedmanycraftsuppliestocreatethesenameplates,suchasa

    widevarietyofstickers,tape,colorfulpaper,scissors,andstring.Wehavefoundcommunication

    tobemuchmoreeffectiveinthegeneralbodyifallmembersareabletocalleachotherby

    namesothiswasawaytofacilitatethatforthefuture.

    Avarietyoficebreakerswereutilizedtobesillyandtogettoknowpeopleonapersonallevel.Oneicebreakerusedwas,MyNameis(insertfavoriteicecreamflavor),andmyfavoriteice

    creamis(insertname).GeneralBodymembersrotatedgroupsbetweenexecutiveboard

    membersandwereencouragedtobeingroupswithpeopletheydidntknow. Thepurposeof

    meetingnewpeoplewasforthepotentialthathallscouldcollaborateonprogramming,orkeep

    incontacttoassisteachotheroutsideofourmeetings.Afterthat,theexecutiveboard metwiththeircorrespondingpositions,handedoutthecheatsheetsandfieldedanypositionspecific

    questions.Dutiesandexpectationsofeachrolewerealsodiscussed .

    The Overall Effect:Overall,LeadershipNightwasahugesuccess !GeneralBodymembershaveinformedusaboutcollaborativeprograms,andevencollaborativefundraising

    ideasforaserviceprojects. ThereismuchchatterbeforeourGeneralBodymeetingsnowasall

    thehallcouncilshavebecomefamiliarwitheachother. Thecheatsheetswereabrilliant

    additiontothisyearsLeadershipNight.LeadershipNightcanoftenbelonganditishardforour

    memberstoretainalltheinformation.Ourcheatsheetwerea simplewaytoeasethetransition

    andithasreallybenefitedRHAintheend. Thereislessconfusionaboutdutiesandtasksandthe

    generalbodymemberscanalwayslookbackanduseitasareference.Itwasbecauseofthis

    leadershiptrainingwegainedtheattentionofaHallCouncilmemberinterestedinanopen

    leadershippositiononourExecutiveBoard.

    effectivelytranslatethattothe

    hallcouncils.Withouta

    successfulLeadershipNight,

    hallcouncilswouldnotbeable

    tofunctiontothebestoftheir

    Purpose: Everyfall,themembersoftheSUNYCortlandsNRHHchaptergoonaretreat.Thetimeismeant

    fornewandreturningmemberstogettoknoweachother,

    tobond,andfortheorganizationtotakecareofsome

    business.Afternotbeingabletogothepreviousyear,this

    yearsfallretreatwasupintheAdirondackMountains,

    locatedonthecollegeownedpropertyofRaquetteLake.

    Afterhavingpreviousdifficultiesin

    attemptingtobookatripto

    RaquetteLake,lastyearsexecutive

    boardtookstepstomakesure

    thatwouldnotbeaproblemagain.

    Theplanningprocessforthisyears

    retreatbeganattheendofthe

    springsemester.Decisionslikewheretheretreatwastobeheld,whatweekenditwouldbe,

    andwhatactivitieswewouldbeparticipatingin.Theplanningprocesscontinuedintothefall

    semesterasthisyearsexecutiveboardworkedtoplanouttheitineraryfortheretreat.Since

    thisyearsretreatfelllaterinthesemester,theusualbusinessthatistypicallytakencareof

    attheretreatwasestablishedprior.Alotofplanningalsowentintotryingtofigureoutthe

    logisticsofourdeparturetimeconsideringwehadadeadlineofbeingunpackedandatthe

    boatdockby6:30pm.

    aquetteLakeislocatedintheheartoftheAdirondack

    Mountains,andistheonlyHistoricLandmarkintheSUNYystem.TherearetwomainfacilitiesAntlersandwhere

    westayed,CampHuntington.Ourgroupencounteredan

    dventurebycaughtinstandstilltrafficforanhour.No

    worries,ourgroupusedthestopalongthehighwayas

    heperfectchancetopracticetheirhackysackskillsand

    etinsomecompetitiveBop-It.Ouroriginaltwoanda

    alfdriveendeduptakingusfivehours,buttherewas

    otonesinglecomplaint.Wearrivedandafteraboatride

    crossthelakewemetwithourfacilitatorsforthe

    ollowingday.Wediscussedsafety,expectations,and

    henparticipatedinicebreakers.

    Budget:IncomparisontoourRHA,NRHH

    hasafairlysmalloperatingbudgetfortheyear.However,the

    executiveboardfeltitwas

    necessarytoallocateasmuch

    fundingaswedidforthefall

    retreat.Thebenefittoour

    organizationhasnoprice.The

    budgetcoveredourstayatthe

    facilitieswhichincludedmeals,the

    lowelementscourse,andthecost

    ofrentingvansforthetrip.

    course.Wethentrekkedoutinthecoldrain

    wherewesplitintotwosmallergroups.Asagroupwedidthe

    WhaleWatch,SpidersWeb,andonepartoftheMohawkWalk.Eachactivitywe

    participatedinthroughoutthedayinvolvedtrust,communication,andorganization.Theses

    threeelementsareimportanttohavingafunctioningNRHH.

    ffreetime,wheresomememberswentand

    riedthehighropescourse,whileothersjust

    ungaroundthecabinandsocialized.Thenas

    groupwereviewedchangesmadetoour

    onstitution,createdexpectationsforboth

    hegeneralbodyandtheexecutiveboard,

    ndcameupwithsloganideasforourchapter

    hirts.Afterbusinesswasover,weparticipated

    nahumanscavengerhuntcalledQuest.incetherainsquashedthepossibilityofhaving

    bonfire,weinsteadhadapiataand

    assedaroundabagofquestions.Laughter

    ontinuedthroughthenight,andweallhadanopportunitytogettoknowoneanotheralot

    etter.

    Memories/Overall Effects:TheweekendretreatatRaquetteLakeprovidedanincredibleopportunityformembers

    tobond,aswellastoexperienceRaquetteLake.Newmembershadtheopportunitytogettoknowreturningmembers,andgetabetterfeelforwhatNRHHisallabout.Thelow

    elementscourseallowedmemberstostretchtheircomfortzones,lettheirleadership

    voicebeheard,whilemostimportantlylearnedtoworkwitheachother.SUNY

    CortlandsfallretreattoRaquetteLakewasnotonlyrunningonleadership,butitwasalso

    runningonmooselove!

    Theexecutiveboardretreatallowedforcollaborationandthesharingofideas.Thiscontinuedintoourorganizationsandallowsusto runonleadership.ForexampleNRHH

    toldRHAhowtheyutilizecommitteesandcommitteeheadstospearheadtheireffortstoexecutethefourpillars.Theydescribedhowthatcouldtranslatetoprogramplanning

    and advocacy for RHA. NRHH suggested to RHA ways to encourage their general body

    members to write OTMs while RHA has inspired people to apply for NRHH. The two

    groups further discussed a Double Dare program that they are planning on hosting

    together in the spring, and how they can continue joint programming throughout the

    year.

    AtLeadershipNight,RHAworkedtomakethemembersawareofthepowerthat

    theyhavebeingageneralbodymember.Theyhaveabiginfluenceonourcampus.The

    E-boarddelegatedtheprogramstothegeneralbodysotheywouldbeplanningprograms

    theywantedto see.Thiswassomethingdiscussedattheretreat,andbothorganizations

    decideditwouldbeeffectivetoimplementforbothoftheirorganizations.Generalbody

    members began to bring potential service program ideas for the semester. In planning

    theirprograms,RHAsplitupintocommittees.Whenthiswasnotaseffectiveasoriginally

    expected,theexecutiveboardreferencedwhattheylearnedfromNRHHattheexecutive

    boardretreat,andimplementedcommitteeheads.

    On the NRHH retreat at Raquette Lake, NRHH took a page out of RHAs

    constitution, and explained the possibilities for their members to get involved on the

    regionallevel.ThisissomethingthatpreviouslyhadonlyoccurredinRHA. PastNEACURH

    andNACURHdelegationshadminimalNRHHinvolvement.ThecurrentNRHHexecutiveboardwantedtoenhancethemooseloveintheirorganization.
