“Country Oasis”Mr. and Mrs. Tim Webb8620 Tyson Farm Road

Step into a country oasis! The home of the Webb’s, owners of Raleigh Road Garden Center, is surrounded by beautiful gardens, whimsical accessories and barnyard animals. The Webb’s purchased the home in 2010 and immediately began transforming the two-acre landscape around the 1952 bungalow from overgrown shrubs to boxwood-edged plantings. From the back sitting areas, you can see the family calves and goats, grazing in the pastures. This landscape is neatly manicured and provides the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll under the rose-covered pergola or for entertaining by the outside fireplace. Leave the city behind and come enjoy the amenities that country living provides.

“You could say I literally take my work home with me. As a family with two young children, we love to get outside and play and be active. It’s a passion for us. It’s definitely a work in progress, but with the pasture, the goats, chickens, ducks and everything, it’s just a nice environment to spend time as a family.”

Appearances count, especially when you’re trying to sell a home. Even though the housing industry experts predict this spring will be a seller’s market, it’s important to grab every ad-vantage when you’re trying to sell your home. Staging - decorating a house to appeal to the broadest possible range of buyers - can make the difference between a quick sale or a long, painful linger on the market.

Fortunately, many of the most effec-tive staging trips are also inexpensive, from a thorough cleaning to decorator details. Here are five staging tricks that don’t cost a bundle:

1. Cleanliness counts Nothing turns off buyers faster than a

dirty house. Before you list your house, give it a thorough top-to-bottom clean-ing - something that costs nothing but the price of supplies if you do it yourself and a couple hundred bucks, tops, if you hire pros to do it for you. Don’t overlook little details like baseboards, ceiling fans, blinds and shower doors. Include declut-tering in your cleanup efforts, and re-move excess items from your home, even if you have to rent a storage unit to do it.

2. Work those walls Painting is one of the cheapest, easiest

ways to help your home look fresh and great. Choose neutral colors that will appeal to the broadest range of buyers. Don’t forget that neutral doesn’t have to mean bland, either. Consider dressing up an accent wall, easily and cost-effec-tively with repositionable wallpaper or a removable wallpaper mural.

3. Fix up the fireplace Sure, you’re heading into summer

selling season, but fireplaces charm buyers no matter what the weather. Make yours look its best. Old brick fire-places can get designer flare from a coat of paint. If your fireplace is wood-burn-ing, remove and clean the screen. If it looks tired and rusty, give it a fresh look

with a coat of heat-resistant spray paint. For gas fireplaces, keep the glass clean and make sure everything is in working order. For a nominal cost, you can install a remote starter - a winning feature for buyers who can envision themselves starting a fire without ever having to leave the comfort of their couch.

4. Spruce up outdoor living spaces If you have a deck or patio, do what-

ever it takes to spruce it up, from power-washing pavers and deck boards to staining tired-looking wooden decks. If you don’t have a patio or deck, and don’t want to spend a lot of money adding one, you can still create an appealing outdoor seating area. Mark off an area using stones or plastic edgers near the house or in a shady spot in the yard. Fill in with pea gravel or wood chips, then add an attractive bistro set - with umbrella - to create a pleasant seating spot.

5. Brighten the bath Bathrooms and kitchens sell houses,

yet many sellers are reluctant to sink any additional money into staging a bath-room. You don’t have to spend a bundle to make your bathroom more appealing. After a deep cleaning, invest in some designer towels that only come out for showings. Put up a fresh shower curtain and get rid of those nasty area rugs that will make buyers think “germs.” Add a small vase of fresh flowers on the vanity. Bring in more natural light by removing blinds and ensuring privacy with remov-able film that makes windows look frost-ed. Have a bathroom that doesn’t have windows? You can really brighten it - and make a designer statement - by placing a removable wallpaper mural on the ceil-ing. Pick a sky scene with fluffy clouds on a blue background and you can even brighten a windowless powder room.

Staging a home can help make it more appealing to potential buyers, and ensure you sell it faster.Courtesy of Brandpoint

“Summer Retreat”Dr. and Mrs. James Cummings2900 Falling Maple Drive

This beautiful garden is tended by two dedicated gardeners. They designed, installed, planted, and maintain their walkways, pond, garden, sitting areas and pool. Vine-covered fences attract butterflies and birds come to visit the fish in their pond. A plant-filled deck, relaxing patio and oasis-like pool area complete this relaxing retreat. Tranquility best describes this garden.

“We are outside a lot and we just like it to be peaceful, tranquil and pretty. We’re both avid gardeners, and everything —from the fish pond to the natural areas to the pool — is just a culmination of our time spent working on and enjoying this space.”

10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

For first-time gardeners Each year, thousands of first-timers will

join the millions of seasoned gardeners who already know the satisfaction of pick-ing a perfect tomato at its peak, serving up salads from greens just grown right out-side the back door, or harvesting home-grown peppers and specialty herbs never even seen at the grocery store.

Most of us want that home-grown, healthy goodness that veggie and herb gardens provide, but sometimes it’s hard to figure out just where to start. Diligent effort and smart investment can result in less-than-expected results, but starting your own produce plot and reaping its re-wards is not out of your reach.

Even a small garden can fill your table with fresh, nutritious food, and help save money, too. In addition to the satisfaction you’ll get from growing your own food, gardening delivers a host of other health benefits, from low-impact exercise to boosting vitamin D levels with the hours you’ll spend in the sunshine.

Whether you start with a few containers on your patio, create a raised bed in a side yard or go big and plant a grand victory garden, gardening can be easy if you start with these six simple steps.

Step 1 - plant what you eat

Plant what you eat and try some easy-to-grow favorites, like these:

* Easy herbs - The volatile oils that make herbs valuable in cooking also natu-rally repel many insects and garden pests. Try basils, parsley, rosemary and some-thing new, like grapefruit mint, which tastes as refreshing as it sounds.

* Bell peppers - You’ll find the Bell pep-pers grown in your own backyard will taste sweeter than those bought from your grocer. Harvest them green or red, when vitamin levels are higher.

* Eggplant - Eggplant thrives in hot weather.

* Lettuce - Go for “leaf” lettuces like “Buttercrunch,” “Red Sails,” or Romaine. They’ll tolerate more heat than head let-tuces and if you keep picking the leaves you’ll get multiple harvests.

* Summer squash - Squash are easy-grow too, and very productive.

* Tomatoes - These crimson favorites are the most popular backyard vegetable.

Step 2 - location, location, location

Be sure the spot you choose for your plants gets six to eight hours of sun. You don’t need a lot of space to begin a veg-

try some sure-grow guidance in your 2013 yard...etable garden. If you choose to grow in containers, you don’t even need a yard - a deck, patio or balcony will provide plenty of space. The amount of space you require will depend on what you’re planting and how many plants you intend to cultivate.

Sun-deprived plants won’t bear as much fruit and are more vulnerable to insects and stress.

Step 3-- Suitable Soil

Success starts with the soil. Most veg-etables do well in moist, well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter like compost or peat moss. Adding organic material loosens stiff soil, helps retain moisture and nourishes important soil organisms.

Step 4-- Feed your Food

All edible plants remove some nutrients from the soil, and can quickly exhaust soil

without the help of a fertilizer. Since one of the reasons for growing your own vege-tables is to control exactly what your fam-ily consumes, be sure to use all-natural, safe products. Research shows plants are healthier and more vigorous using organi-cally based foods, rather than chemical based options.

Step 5 - Water Well

Most vegetables aren’t drought tolerant, so you’ll need to water them regularly. The closer your garden is to a water source, the easier it will be to keep plants hydrated. One inch of water weekly is ad-equate for most vegetables.

Step 6 - peSt patrol

Let natural predators fight your battles, hand-pick pests or dislodge them with a jet of water. If you spray, do it late in the

day when beneficial insects are less ac-tive.

You can find plenty of resources to help

guide you through the planting process. Read up, watch videos, take a class and get your hands dirty.Courtesy of Brandpoint

“Hobby Family Garden”Dr. and Mrs. Jim Taylor3003 Wolf Trap Drive

This federal-style home on a corner lot in Belle Meade has a graceful curving drive to a front door flanked with boxwoods and perennial shrubs. Two unusual Chinese firs are in the front garden . Multiple garden beds surround the home which includes family heirloom plants from eastern North Carolina. A number of native dogwoods planted by the family approximately 30 years ago survive. A generous use of family garden ornaments and mementos lend charm as one enjoys raised beds, a treehouse and multiple fountains. The beautiful Japanese Maple covering the Koi pond is notable. Jim’s hostas and Pat’s climbing vines connect this pleasurable walk.

“It’s just a comfortable, tranquil place to spend time. We have three decades of memories scattered around the property in different forms, which is fun. There’s a plaque my grandmother gave me that was in her garden which reads: ‘One is closer to God in a garden than anywhere else on earth.’ My mother and daddy were also both into gardening, so I guess I got it from all sides: just a love for tending the earth.”

“Garden of Delights”Carol Wikfors & Sheila Forbes509 Lafayette Drive

This 1950s home in the popular Cavalier Terrace neighborhood has it ALL! The owner, a local artist, has incorporated her love for art into the whimsical landscape. The backyard is perfect for entertaining around the swimming pool or relaxing on the screened porch. The pool is complemented by large annual container plantings and a lush fescue lawn. Fresh eggs are always available from the two chickens, Olivia and Henrietta, that reside in the artistic chicken coop located at the side of the property. Color is abundant! This garden of delights is ideal in mixing practical and whimsical.

“The garden is just a little peace and tranquility in our otherwise hectic schedules. For me, it’s the act of gardening that I love: digging the dirt, watering, watching something grow. It’s also nice to have our own little tropical oasis. Our own vacation spot.” -Carol Wikfors

“Green Heritage Garden”Mr. and Mrs. Ben Skinner521 Mount Vernon Drive

This residence, built in 1943, is a simple southern landscape tucked away in the heart of Wilson. The front of the house is planted with a lawn that is bordered by an array of Southern plants including boxwoods, azaleas, hollies, camellias, dogwoods and rhododendrons. A variety of groundcovers, ferns, hostas and Lenten roses blanket the beds of this shady yard beneath the large willow and laurel oaks. Near the house’s side entry is a small, quaint walled-in courtyard with many of its plantings designed by Ben’s mother, Sammie Skinner. A raised Silas Lucas brick terrace transitions the house to the rear lawn, which is bordered by pachysandra and ivy beds and plantings in front of nature’s own buffer from the outside world.

“We have many of the traditional Southern plants, which I love. My mother was a big gardener, and that’s where I got the love for it. We do it to unwind. Our yard is buffered on three sides by a wooded area, so it seems in harmony with nature. It’s very peaceful.”

“We enjoy it, and it’s been fun to watch it develop. It makes us happy, and I think it would make my late mother happy as well. She was a gardener, and she started us off by giving us plants from her own garden. Additionally, it gives us a place to show off works created by my daughter, who is a sculptor.” -Ann Barnes

The Barnes’ garden evolved from shrubs and small trees inherited from her mother’s garden. Hidden along the garden paths is the art created by their daughter, Sherrod.

“Formal and Relaxing”Mr. and Mrs. Bill Andrews2305 Canal Drive NW

The Andrews’ garden is a reflection of their living style, at once relaxing and formal. The house is surrounded by large oaks and mature plantings. The entrance to the back will take you by surprise as an extensive area is designed into a relaxed patio room, creating an inviting area, with a water feature. The backdrop for this cool, shady area is the stream that runs behind the garden. The large lawn showcases a formal rose garden surrounded by black, wrought iron fence.

“There was a lot of work established by the previous owners, which we inherited 20 years ago and made the conscious decision to continue and expand upon, both for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. We want the outside of the home to be as comfortable and inviting as the inside. It’s worth it. Having a place to unwind is also important.”

-Bill Andrews
